Don’t settle for less than what God can do. We often face situations in life that are hard. Whether it be a job loss, a difficult marriage, or problems with the kids - harsh storms come, and we can quickly feel overwhelmed, even desperate. In the beginning of creation, God entered the darkness and void and displayed his turnaround nature. He spoke words that turned darkness into light and filled the emptiness with fruitfulness. His turnaround power brought order into the chaos. In the same way, God enters our lives with the power of his turnaround ability and offers not just a slight improvement but a complete turnaround. Turnarounds by their nature are radical. They bypass nice and sensible, they freak out the orderly, and they do not line up with agendas. But turnarounds reveal our miraculous Savior to a messed-up world. Using examples from her own life and those of biblical characters, international speaker and teacher Charlotte Gambill offers that God is more than just a little bit of help, he’s all the help; we need. It’s time for us to fully understand that there is nothing that God can’t turn around!
Certainly here in New Zealand a few years ago Charlotte Gambill was all the rage and top of the bill for every Christian event going (particularly women's events), however the momentum behind 'the brand' has gone - I don't know why? I heard her speak once and the way she used the story of Jonah was original and compelling and in his book her trademark use of well known bible stories is evident. However she doesn't do it as well in book form as she did speaking live.
The book feels as if it was spun out of a series of messages Gambill had delivered, but the type of media does make a difference and insufficient attention has be paid to that change. It really isn't a long book and actually the over large type with too few words per line actually is a hindrance to flowing reading I found. This seems a minor quibble, but what it speaks of is producing a book because Gambill needed merchandise rather than having something truly compelling to share. What she has to say is actually very good and quite challenging - it's just that it lacks a strong sense of compulsion or conviction (as well as going deeper).
The central premise is that if things aren't going well in life then we can turn it around - whatever the circumstance - with God in our lives. In order to do this we need to get real; and the book is about the issues we may need to face up to. There is plenty of good biblical analogy (often used in original ways, but not always with particularly accurate exegesis), and plenty of personal experience analogy too, but although she shares some quite personal things it seems so without sharing the heart or becoming vulnerable. Is it all about overcoming our easy fixed faults, when pastors need to be wary of thinking we can change others?
All of what is said in the book is good and my review is over harsh. It's just not up to par with Charlotte Gambill's speaking and reputation.
Have you lost your job? Are you in a difficult marriage? Do you have problems with the kids? All of us face tough situations in our lives and when we do, we can quickly feel overwhelmed or desperate. In Turnaround God: Discovering God’s Transformational Power, international speaker and teacher Charlotte Gambill challenges her readers not to settle for less than what God can do. Throughout the book she uses examples from her own life and those of biblical characters to illustrate that God is all the help we need in the harsh storms of life for there is nothing that God cannot turn around.
Charlotte Gambill has an engaging writing style, making the book easy to read. It is full of inspiring quotes. Be sure to be reading with a highlighter pen handy. You will want to mark many a passage that speaks into your life. At least that was how I felt. Oftentimes the author did that for me though – throughout, the notable points are repeated in slightly larger type. A feature I like very much.
Each chapter considers a different aspect of God’s turnaround power and the role we ought to play in it, such as yielding to God or offering forgiveness. I love the way personal and biblical examples are interspersed throughout the book. It makes the message more accessible and practical.
It has to be said that this book makes for rather uncomfortable reading as it challenges its readers to tap into God’s turnaround power. Expect change, expect transformation, expect a turnaround. Don’t settle for less than what God can do.
As for me, I will read the book again and recommend it to everyone I know. Turnaround God is a definite must-read! Go buy your copy now.
This was a really good book. Straight forward and to the point. The basic message that I got throughout the entire book was that we must be active participants in our own salvation and in the building of the Kingdom of God. If you do your part God has the Power to do the rest and turn everything around for his glory.
I really enjoyed this book and it reminded me that God is always there to help me. God can turnaround any situation - even mine! I cannot wait to do an in depth study on this book to try and get a deeper understanding.
