An interesting setting, a disappointing second book

I really like the setting of this book. A mysterious tower. Humans having forgotten their past, their history, and as the main character climbs, we see that things are not what they seem. The mystery draws me. In, makes me want to learn more.

But then I see the serious pacing issues of this book, already apparent in the second book. We don't know how tall the Tower is, but we know that humans have made it to at least the 55th floor. This book ends with a teaser of humanity's history as the party leaves the 5th floor. At this rate, I am skeptical that we will ever get any answers, or just be strung along as the author tries to squeeze 10+ books out of this concept.

The book is nearly 200 pages shorter than the first book. On top of that, the author threw 60 pages of power descriptions into the middle of the book.

I read this on Kindle Unlimited so I am not too pressed, but if I had paid for this book I would feel ripped off.

In addition to the pacing concerns, there is a serious lack of tension. The main character is overpowered, and everyone else continuously just watches, in awe of his skill. And to top it off, the author appears to have created a female character who is 30-40 years old but looks 16, purely so that the MC who is an old man in a young man's body can have a 16 year old girl to romance.

piece of the whole

The action starts right where the previous book left off. No recap. Recommend you re-read the previous book at least in part.

There are glimpses of plots and machinations that make the world building exquisite. Without overly burdening the central narration.

All he really has is knowledge, and even that is incomplete. The ‘training’ sequence as the party shook out was hilarious.

MaHOOsive cliffhanger at the end. But I applaud the choice; any further forward is clearly a new adventure.

Somehow, I will avoid going to my favorite website (RoyalRoad) to attempt to read ahead.

Bad: The *large* chapters with each party member’s deck (to that point) needs to be better presented. For instance, once you’ve read a Foundation card for xxxxxxx, the flavor text doesn’t change. Also, 20-30 cards apiece is a lot. Perhaps she should have listed the cards more simply, with the full flavor text as an appendix. I’ve also seen Footnotes used.

To be clear, full text when discovering a *new* card is fine. It is time I would expect the characters to take.

Pre-ordering the next book ASAP.

The story that was there was good but it was too short like 25% shorter than last book and felt more of a set up for the next book the a story itself. Nothing really happened to progress a story.

Approximately 8% (4 lengthy chapters) was character sheets however right before that it was hinted at that 2 of the characters sheets would be getting complete reworks soon.

These felt more of a book of side stories of the main story than the story itself.

There were lore dumps and hints of the tower but those were short and just didn’t provide anything to the story.

The fighting took a hit here with only one fight actually being interesting the rest were so fast that it barely fit on a page each.

They are on floor 5 by the end but that kinda lost all meaning as they only ever encountered the “same” level of creature with no real changes. Same being a creature that people find “scary” but are next to useless next to the MC or his op friend.

Good, but the language needs work

I enjoyed this book and the first in the series a lot. Good world building, intriguing card-based magic system with well thought out parameters.

The reason I only gave this 3 stars however, is the horrible use of language. The switching between well spoken English and what seems to be cockney English is just awful. The main character seems to be some sort of British gent, and then they switch their language to something like a street urchin for no real reason. It’s extremely jarring to read and it makes the character seem shallow and fake. I can only assume that the authors are not from Britain and are using terrible word choices because of this.
As someone from Britain, I appreciate the effort but if you’re going to do it, do more research first!

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first.

Many sections were devoted to "lecturing" the party, which just dragged. About 30 pages in the middle of the book were devoted to Card stats... I'm not sure how the audiobook would handle that. No forces are pushing against the protagonist, despite a couple of antagonists moving on the periphery.

The ending seemed muddled, rushed, and unsatisfying. This is where the story ends for me. [probably?]

Pulls you through for the…

…most part. Honestly itis a great story but I do think that the writer did through a reader or eventually a listerner speed bump about 75% through. Where there is a chapter that feels more like an appendix, if it mained only a journal pov from the side character it would have been great but it instead broke down 4 characters “decks,” and every cared in them. It broke the immersion and even with the author giving a heads up and the information to skip to the next chapter I took me out of the story a bit. That said I did enjoy the story as a whole and will continue to read it but I know the when the audible version comes out it will be a pain because 10 minutes of discription sucks.

The series continues to have good worlding buiilding and characters the plot for the second book is a bit off in that it is interesting and cool stuff happens but most it is just a book to set up the next book as a nothing big really happens, until…cliff hanger. Yep, frustrating isn't.

This book pulled me through with the momentum for the first book the this is were the story does start to feel like a run-on story with an almost chapter by chapter realease feel. I don't think it was a chapter by chapter story but without the three part arc and soild end it feels that way.

Still look forward to the next book.

A good read

It was a very good read. But it just felt like it was too short I don't know if it's the you're really into reading a good book or if it was actually too short. I remember being at the very beginning and then seeing that was already 9% through the book. I love the blob the story all that stuff but I wish there was just more to the book volume wise. And not those three chapters of just card stats. That's something that should pop up at the end of the book when the story is done or something. Still it's a great book and I'll read the next one too whenever it gets out hopefully it's longer.

Book two

I've waited what has felt like ages for this one to come out.
I'd managed to read half of the original draft before the story disappeared from Royalroad and was locked behind a pay wall.
Still despite my complaints, I enjoyed reading this book.
It's very well written and edited. I didn't find any mistakes.
Now that dreaded wait begins for book three.

10/10 Maybe book three will come out faster.

Väldigt kort, säkert 2h gick till att beskriva kort vid en tidpunkt. Möjligen även lite slö, inte lika bra som första! Men ändå bra.

This book was ruined by the romance at the end. I just don't understand why regressed heros always end up with romantic relationships in their second chance. No, just no. I want the MC to be focused on his goal, not being distracted by a woman and trying to save her when she is in trouble😑

Disappointing.

The climb was mundane and rather boring. The quirks from book one were gone and all that was left was tedious grunt work. I really hope book three brings back the feel from the first one.

Surprisingly just as enjoyable as the first, but the MC constantly being better than the others though not having as good cards in his deck began to feel boring.

I dont know if this happened in the first or this one, I read them so close together, but his realization of him making 'small changes' and not thinking they might make bug changes confused me. Like killing someone who did die in one timeline still died, but died at a different time, yet you are not taking these changes into consideration and keep charging forward?

I also dont know, or at least not remember reading that the apocalypse that happens in the future, and he finds 'anchors' in his present. I dont remember him acknowledging that maybe they are connected and maybe he just does not want to get involved, but he spends so much time complaining about how greedy the Higher Families are, but his entire reason to charge through the first few floors is to just gain the means to get limitless Essence.... because he feels he needs power... uuh.. hypocrite much?

What made me still give it such a high rating even with my biggest gripes about the timeline changes, is what he discovered in the bank in the 'in between' what he found and how the story could progress into being in the future makes me excited to continue on and wait to read the next one.

Needs an editor. You can't have nobles from esteemed families using slurred speech.

Then, the debuff cards are too powerful considering how easy they are to get. I'd expect them to be less and less effective against opponents of higher levels, but no siree.

Also, is this book about a summoner or not? We're post the 2nd book and I've yet to see meaningful use of summons. Heck even that slutty author Eric Vall had much better ideas when it came to this particular discipline of fiction.

That said, there are some positives. The chuckling is slightly toned down. There is no more pouring infernal wash after every other paragraph. But still I'd urge the author to not rush and release well polished books. There is potential here that can make this a much better series than the disappointment All The Skills turned into.

Rating 1.5 stars - DNF

I am not sure what I was thinking picked up this book. I wasn't a huge fan of the first one. I rated it 2.5 stars. Maybe I was just in a lull and was hoping for more? Anyway, I think this one is on me. I made it about 20% before I decided to pull the plug. All the things I didn't like in the first book were still there and there was nothing added. The world building wasn't good. The magic system wasn't that good. Mainly though, the characters were shit. The MC still comes off as pompous. He tells a joke and chuckles to himself. He keeps walking around calling everyone "lad". He is an old man in a young body but at some point, you need to adapt. Either that or tell the people around you why you are acting so weird. I decided it wasn't worth it anymore.

Clean. Innovative. Overall, I enjoyed the story. Several concerns from the first book are realized in the sequel. Character development gets sidelined for magic technical discussions (not a fan). A major portion of the book becomes a detailed discussion over the magic. It breaks the pace, and I think such a choice is the main flaw of LIT RPG. I hope he avoids this in the future.
My next big concern is Superman Syndrome. The main character is quickly becoming omnipotent; I haven't seen his critical flaw in a while. The sole reason that his progression hasn't ruined the story for me yet is foreknowledge that stronger villains exist.
Four stars because I do want to read the next book. However, I need the first book's tension to return, or I'll be stopping on the third book.

Again overall it was an alright book, like the first book. I feel like they were able to get the language with how Rowan speaks more in the right direction, it still doesn't make sense since no one his original age or older speaks like that, but I'm fine with it now since it sets him apart from the other characters.

I think I read a comment saying that the author had some personal circumstances during the writing of this book so I can understand why it felt a bit rushed and bare bones.

I think this book seems more like a filler book that kinda gives us more story plot. so I view this book as book 1.5. Hopefully all goes well and the next book is able to get the attention it deserves.

The first book in this series had a strong plot, interesting characters with good character development, and an innovative world.

This book has a threadbare plot (and ends with a cliffhanger), limited character development, and scattered world design.

Further, it's only 60% as long as book 1 and about 20% of that is taken up with four long chapters that are nothing but recitations of character sheets. (It's nice that you can skip past those chapters easily, but the remaining book is quite slight.)

After book 1, I thought this was going to be an excellent series. After this book, I think the author might have no idea how to continue. Not recommended.

Enjoyable sequel. It wasn't quite up to the first book but I still had fun with it.

I agree with others who complained about the big card drop in the middle; it was too much information and too much of it was repetitive. It would have been better to have it either as a glossary or just highlight the effects of level and rank so that each person's cards could have just been summarized with name, level rank. Everyone really only has a small number of actually interesting and/or build-defining cards.

That said, I'm looking forward to the next book.

Sophomore slump. I’ll be honest. I was a little disappointed. I loved the first book but I don’t feel like anything happened. A couple more characters joined the crew but it happened too quick. There wasn’t much of a plot in this book which is the biggest problem. The beginnings of a plot showed at the end but the cliffhanger ending popped up. I know this is a Webnovel and sometimes their published books have seemingly arbitrary beginnings and endings. There is still a cool magic system and I really like the MC but I need more of a story to be happy.

I really enjoyed the book, but I was not a fan of the cliffhanger ending. There was one point where they went through everybody's cards (the MC's party keeps growing) where I considered dropping the story. Keeping track of every build when they all have so many cards is too overwhelming and I usually enjoy that stuff. Luckily, I was still able to follow the story just fine just skimming that part. I do worry that later on in the series the sheer number of abilities to keep track of will be too much.

Wow.

Great and intriguing story. Rowan is playing the long game as his real age allows. Maximize every floor gain and every achievement. He plays his cards close to his chest.. Literally. Love the budding romance should add to team dynamics. More of the overall world\system architecture is revealed but definitely not all of it. The powers (nobles, societies, churches) are on the move and the reader get a glimpse of it. Hopefully a short wait for the next book.

Must read book 1 first! Story & characters very interesting.

Overall, it was a well written story with interesting characters. Unique magic system & monsters. Enough story arcs to make it fun.
There is too much repetitive listing of stats. Since all of the characters have the same foundations, with only the % & abilities changing, it would be better to just state the changes!
Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I look forward to the next book.

i hate the cliffhanger but understand the necessity

The tale from the first book continues seamlessly into this book and maintains the excellence of the first.

The team of climbers grows in numbers and oersonal development. Our MC is embracing the vitality of youth and each of the other members are getting molded into interesting and potetially powerful climbers.

I hope the next novel doesn’t take too long.

Not as good as book one

This was definitely a disappointment from book one. It was very slow. There was a random party ad that maybe someday will work out but I was very disappointed in it. Between 15 and 20% of the story is just one giant chunk of cards and descriptions. It's a total waste and rip off. There is a huge discrepancy between how the protagonist acts and how he's supposed to act and how the story says he's supposed to act. All in all a severe disappointment

Excessive use of deck descriptions shortens the actual storyline

An amazing story diminished by endless pages of Deck descriptions of the group. The author did this in Book 1, but this felt excessive. I can’t speak for others, but I don’t need to know what every card does countless times over. Once a card is added and described, let it go. I felt this was a lost opportunity to give us more storyline. I am disappointed, but I will continue to the next book.

I'm really not sure what's goin' on but I just was as engaged by the book as I suspected I'd be. 'Cause bk 1 was one my favorite books in 2023 and it's deck building litRPG which are always fun. I think that this is a book that would have benefited by a reread (something I never do) or at least a recap. The book is still good and I'm definitely curious about what's gonna happen next 🤔.
And yes Jeff Hays and Soundbooth Theater Production's is always a plus.

This was a great second story. My major complaint is that it is so much shorter than the previous book. Also that end is killing me. When is book 3 coming out? Anyway the team sets out on their journey. Nathaniel and Rowan are OP so they spend the time getting their third member up to snuff. Great secrets hinted in the previous book are revealed but come with even greater questions. I am personally excited to read more of this series and can't wait for the next book to drop.

Much of the same from book 1 (which is a good thing).

I'm curious to see if Rowan will continue to be insanely overpowered after he reaches the next few floors or if, with his bank of practical knowledge running out, will return to a more grounded hero. I hope is is the latter, I think litrpgs protagonists that have to struggle are much more fun to read, although insanely op protagonists can be fun if written extremely well.

Fantastic book

Strong contender for best read of the year. I thought the first was good but this gets even better. Not only is it a very unique and captivating story but the characters themselves are so well written. There is real personality and growth and I can’t wait for more. It’s a shame we have to wait for the next one for so long.
