Apaches of New York

Rate this book
The Godfather meets Gangs of New York Apaches of New York is the incredible true story of the first generation of Italian American gangsters and the birth of organized crime in early 1900s New York.

The dreaded Clutch Hand, the first Boss of Bosses of the young American Mafia, has been arrested. While the prosecutors and the papers celebrate Giuseppe Morello’s end of terror the underworld seethes as the order he imposed breaks down. Soon chaos descends on New York City as powerful gangsters fight to take the vacant throne.

Emerging from the imprisoned Godfather’s long shadow are his half brothers, the Terranovas. Vincenzo, Ciro and Nick watch as East Harlem is torn apart by a vicious gang war between the self-proclaimed King of Little Italy and the mad bomber Zopo the Gimp. The brothers do all they can to steer clear of the violence and survive but a shocking crime close to home forces them to realize that their days of peace are over. The novel follows the Terranovas as they try to save the family (and the Family) from ruin and the neighborhood from the depredations of Black Hand extortionists and other criminals.

Apaches of New York is a story of revenge, family, and the origins of organized crime in America.

What a refreshing break from the strictly historical recounting of early New York. While the time period is inherently interesting, crawling through biography after biography can become quite tedious, very quickly. Vic Lodato appears to take aim at enhancing this experience with his own vision of the complex, conflicted, and often violent relationships that existed between some of America's most notorious gangsters. While I would love to see more world-building in the sequel, Apaches of New York does an excellent job of providing an engaging experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat from cover to cover.

Great summer read that was easy to get through.
Was recommended to me by one of my friends from the military because the author is also a veteran.
