The Everything Job Interview Book, 3rd Edition, by Lin Grensing-Pophal, SPHR. (2012) I assist library patrons with their job search almost every day in the library's open computer lab. Most of the time we focus on resume writing and job applications, topics that I have been able to keep current with. There are times when patrons have questions about the job interview, a topic that I have felt less confident about, since it has been some years since I have been a practicing career counselor. I chose to read this book to bring myself up to date and I feel that I am much more knowledgeable and prepared to assist library patrons with their job interview questions.
The most valuable part of the book is Part III, a thorough list of job interview questions, each of which is followed by a model answer, a poorly thought out answer, and the author's analysis of the interviewer's reasons for asking a specific question and a summary of what might be considered "best practice" response content. What struck me about these analyses was the author's ability to go beyond offering formulaic advice by prompting the reader repeatedly to think deeply about what motivates her or him to apply for a particular job at a specific company. The author also helps the reader to focus on the interviewer's objective in asking a certain question. For example, when asking about how the interviewee felt when things went wrong on a project, the interviewer is less interested in the details of the incident and more in how the interviewee worked under pressure, so the reader is advised to keep the story short and spend more time showing the interviewer how he or she successfully handled the stress. The author goes beyond the list of expected interview questions. She gives advice on how to answer such questions as, "What color is your brain?" and "Tell me about the last time you put your foot in your mouth". For my library patrons she has included a "Special Situations" section which contains questions asked of career changers and those re-entering the job market.
The author provides some assistance to readers who need to brush up on new types of interviews. It's very helpful to jobseekers to know that there are employers who will conduct shadow interviews, performance-based interviews, lunch interviews, stress interviews, videoconference interviews, and computer-assisted interviews. The kinds of stress interviews she describes are quite scary and I hope none of my library patrons has to undergo one, but if they take her advice about controlling the interview by controlling oneself to heart they should do well. Although the computer-assisted interviews the author reviews seem rather exotic, I have observed library patrons participate in scenario-based interviews, comuter assisted skills tests, computer-assisted integrity tests and computer assisted personality tests. I would have liked the author to provide more information about them and best ways to approach them.
I will definitely recommend this book to my library patrons and anyone who might be preparing for job interviews. It's like having your own job interview coach on call.
Excellent book for those looking for a job or a career change. It is a very comprehensive book with a wide array of question and examples of right and wrong answers (with clarification of why they are right or wrong.)
This book will help you succeed on your job search quest.
