"The seed of an idea was planted in my heart which would guide my growth in the coming years; if I was powerless to help my caged brothers in Islam while at GTMO, I resolved I would sure as hell try when I got out of that horrible place."

I can never read anything about Guantanamo Bay without being left sad or angry, the inhuman treatment of people is not only common to Americans, I know that, but it is hard not to feel hatred for the fact that they, on one hand, promote justice, law and order, and pacifism, yet on the other hand, they are guilty of such crimes that get little public backlash.

This is an account of a single guard, a sympathiser to the prisoners in the sense of a human feeling that another human should not need to be harmed and tortured to attain information (which oftentimes did not even exist). I recommend this as it does show us different perspectives and how the guard Mustafa developed relationships with Ruhal of the Tipton Three, Shaker Aamer, and Ahmed Errachidi. Ultimately, he found Islam and was guided.

It is not anywhere near all rainbows and sunshine but is insightful, to say the least. MP Mustafa comes across an open-minded character with a "fight back" attitude and rebelliousness that comes from a sense and place of morality. His patience is also rewarded as he is soon tested when viewed as a non-conformist and in the same vein as his brothers in shackles.

"All the ingredients were there for me to become a conscientious objector. However, standing up for what I thought was right would cost me everything: my career, my financial security and whatever else I valued. I am not a hero. I’m not a patriot, either. I feel I am a coward. A hero would have said, ’No more!’, and a patriot would have said, ’This is wrong and we all know it!’ A coward is one who goes along with the program."

May Allah not hold our limbs or tongues or hearts from stopping and objecting to oppression!

I'd heard some about the author's story before, so was very curious to read this. I had a hard time putting it down. He gives a first hand account of his time as a prison guard at GTMO. Many parts are very disturbing to read as he details the abuse and mistreatment of prisoners, as well as the many problems such as the breakdown of procedures, poor organization and lack of cultural awareness among the soldiers. What is really fascinating about the book is his rejection of the us vs. them mentality pervasive there as he builds relationships with the prisoners and seeks to understand their lives. While he does discuss the factors leading to his conversion to Islam, I would say this book would be of interest to anyone interested in issues surrounding GTMO.

An eye-opening, yet heart-shattering look at GTMO from a guard who worked there for a year. He descriptively talks about what life was like for the (innocent!) prisoners, how sadistic and racist some of the other guards and people in charge were, and how it really all was just manufactured to justify the US spending billions of dollars on their "war on terror". They had to give people a villain to justify spending that money, and when they couldn't find the real villain, they created one. They would literally BUY people to put in these prisons. Disgusting. But it's such an important read because this story is not one that should ever be forgotten. Highly recommend.

துரோகி யார்.? யாருக்கு துரோகி..? எதனால் துரோகியாக பார்க்கப்பட்டார்? என்ற கேள்விகளுடன் புத்தகத்தை அணுகத் தொடங்கினேன். புத்தகத்தின் அட்டைப்படத்திலேயே அதன் சாரம் இருக்கிறது. ஆமாம், குவாண்டனமோ எனும் கொடூர சிறைச்சாலையில் பணிபுரிந்த அமெரிக்க படை வீரனின் இஸ்லாத்தை நோக்கிய பயணம் தான் அது.

லியோ போல்டுவில்லுக்கு பாலைவன அரபு பூமியில் இஸ்லாம் கிடைத்தது போல, யுவான் ரெட்லிக்கு ஆப்கானிஸ்தான் சிறையில் இஸ்லாம் கிடைத்தது போல டெர்ரி ஹோல்ட்புரூக்ஸுக்கு குவாண்டானமோ எனும் வெகுஜன மனிதர்களற்ற பொட்டல் வெளித் தீவில் கட்டமைக்கப்பட்ட உலகின் கொடூரச் சிறைகளில் தான் இஸ்லாம் கிடைத்துள்ளது.

குவாண்டானமோ குறித்த ஏராளமான தரவுகள் இணையத்தில் கொட்டிக் கிடந்தாலும் அது எங்கே இருக்கிறது.. என்ற தேடல் வாசகர்களுக்கு நிச்சயம் எழும். என்னது அது கம்யூனிச தேசமான பிடல் காஸ்ட்ரோ வின் மண்ணில் இருக்கிறதா என்கிற ஆச்சரியம் தொற்றிக் கொள்ளும். அமெரிக்க ஸ்பானிய போரின் போது அமெரிக்காவின் பிடிக்குள் சிக்கிக் கொண்ட குவாண்டானமோ இன்று வரை அமெரிக்கா எனும் அரக்கனின் கரங்களில் தான் தவழ்கிறது. கியூபா எவ்வளவோ முயற்சித்தும் தனது பூமியில் உள்ள குவாண்டானமோவை அமெரிக்காவிடமிருந்து திரும்ப பெற முடியவில்லை. அன்றிலிருந்து குவாண்டானமோ உலகத்தின் அக்குள் பிரதேசமாக மாறிப்போயிருக்கிறது.

778 பேர் நாள் முழுவதும் வியர்த்து , 100 சதவீத ஈரப்பதத்தில், 98 டிகிரி ஃபாரன்ஹீட் வெப்பத்தில் குளிக்கக்கூட அனுமதிக்கப்படாமல் இருந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பதுதான் குவாண்டானமோவில் ஆகக் குறைந்த தண்டனைகளின் அறிமுகம். அந்த நாற்றம் பிடித்த சிறைகள், விஷ ஜந்துக்கள், பிணைக்கப்பட்ட விலங்குகள் , அப்பாவி சிறைவாசிகள் என அந்த கொடூர பகுதியில் அவருக்கு இஸ்லாம் கிடைத்ததெனில் ஆச்சரியமே.

உலகின் பல்வேறு நாடுகளைச் சார்ந்தவர்களும் குவாண்டானமோவில் கைதிகளாக இருக்கிறார்கள. பாகிஸ்தான், ஆஃப்கானிஸ்தான், துருக்கி, இங்கிலாந்து, உய்கூர் முஸ்லிம்கள் என பல தேசத்து மக்களை தீவிரவாதம் என்ற ஒன்று இருக்கிறது என்று கட்டமைப்பதற்காக, அமெரிக்காதான் தீவிரவாதத்தை அழிக்க முனையும் வல்லாதிக்க அரசு என அமெரிக்கர்களுக்கும், உலகுக்கும் சொல்வதற்காக குவாண்டானமோவில் அடைத்திருக்கிறது.

நான் ஏன் குவாண்டானமோ அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளேன் என்பது இறைவனால் தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்று, எனது உடலில் ஏன் இரத்தம் ஓடுகிறது என்பதும் அத்தகையது தான். இந்த கேள்விகளிலிருந்துதான் ஹோல்ட்புரூக்ஸின் பயணம் தொடங்குகிறது. எத்தனையோ விதமான அழைப்புபணிகளை பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். ஆனால் அந்த கொடூரமான சிறைகளில் அழைப்புப் பணி எப்படி சாத்தியமானது. அதற்கான பதில் இஸ்லாம்தான்.

தங்களது வாழ்க்கையே கேள்விக் குறியாகி நிற்கும் அந்த சிறைக் கேம்பில் அவர்களது தீர்க்கமான நம்பிக்கை தான் அவர்களின் கடைசி மிடறு ஆறுதல். எத்தனை கொடுமைகளுக்குப் பின்னாலும் அவர்களை ஓரளவு புன்முறுவல் பூத்திடவும், மீண்டெழவும் ஓர் உந்து சக்தி துணையாக இருக்கிறது எனில் அதுதான் இஸ்லாம்.

மலத்தினை முகத்தில் பூசுவதில் இருந்து, மாதவிடாய் இரத்தத்தினை முகத்தில் பூசி மூன்று நாட்கள் குளிக்கவிடாமல் தண்ணீர் குழாய்களை அடைத்து வைப்பது வரை அந்த அக்கிரமக்கார அமெரிக்காவின் அடிவருடிகள் செய்ததற்கான காரணம் முஸ்லிம்கள் ஐவேளை தொழுவார்கள், அதற்கு சுத்தம் ஒரு பகுதி. எனவே சுத்தமில்லாமல் அவர்களை பார்த்துக் கொண்டால் அவர்கள் தொழுகையிலிருந்து விலகி விடுவார்கள். இதன் மூலம் அவர்களின் தீர்க்கமான நம்பிக்கையை தகர்க்கலாம் என்பதுதான் அவர்களது திட்டமே.

ஒரு படைவீரர் சிறைக் கைதிகளோடு உரையாடத் தொடங்கி பின்பு அதற்காகவே தனது அன்றாட பணிகளை துரிதமாக முடித்துவிட்டு பின் உரையாடலுக்கு தயாராகும் அந்த தவிப்பையும், பின் இரவுகளில் நிகழும் உரையாடல்கள், ஜெனரல் எனப்படும் அஹமது அர்ரஷாதியோடு தஹஜ்ஜத்துடைய நேரத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த மூன்று மணி நேர உரையாடல் அதைத் தொடர்ந்த இஸ்லாம் ஏற்பு பிரகடனம் என இப்புத்தகம் முழுக்க சுவாரஸ்யங்களை கிரகித்திருக்கிறது. தஹஜ்ஜத்துடைய நேரத்தில் கலிமா சஹாதாவை மொழிந்து இஸ்லாத்தை தனதாக்கி கொள்ளும் அந்த அற்புதமான நிகழ்வு கண்முன்னால் சிந்திப்பதற்கே எவ்வளவு அழகாக இருக்கிறது. இதை அவரது எழுத்திலிருந்தே சொல்ல வேண்டுமெனில்...

"குவாண்டானமோ கடற்கரையில் அலைகள் மணலை வாருவது போல.., இஸ்லாம் எனை வாரிக் கொண்டிருந்தது.."

குவாண்டானமோ பற்றி மேலதிக தகவல்களை இப்புத்தகம் பேசுகிறது. அதன் இறுக்கம், வெறுமை, கட்டங்களின் அமைப்பு, உளவியல் சார்ந்த தண்டனைகள், செயற்கையாக ஊட்டப்பட்ட வெறி, இஸ்லாம் பற்றி உச்சபட்ச வெறுப்பு என ஒட்டுமொத்த கூடாரம் தான் குவாண்டானமோ. வயதான சிறைவாசிக்கு கைகளிலும், கால்களிலும் எடை அதிகமுள்ள விலங்குகளை மாட்டி பாரபட்சம் பாரக்காமல் அழைத்து செல்வதும், அவர் இடறி விழும்போதும், அதனை படைவீரர்கள் பார்த்து ரசிக்கும் போது ஒரு கணம் மனதில் வலிகளை ஏற்படுத்தும். மற்றொரு புறம் ஹோல்ட்புரூக்ஸை அவர் கைதிகளோடு உறையாடுகிறார் என்ற ஒரே காரணத்திற்காக உயரதிகாரி கும்பல் ஒன்று நன்றாக குடித்து விட்டு போதையில் அடிக்கும் காட்சியும் கவலையைத் தரும்.

புத்தகத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான பகுதியே கைதிகளோடு அவர் மேற்கொள்ளும் உரையாடல் தான். அதன் ரசனையை வாசர்கள் தவறாது பருக வேண்டும. அவர் இக்கட்டான சூழலை சிறையிலும், வாழ்க்கையிலும் சந்திக்கும் பொழுதும் , அதிலிருந்து விடுபடும்பொழுதும் ஏற்படும் சுவாரசியங்களை, பரபரப்புகளை கண்முன்னே நம்மால் நினைத்து பார்க்க முடியும்.

இறுதியாக டெர்ரி ஹோல்ட்புரூக்ஸ் என்ற அமெரிக்க படைவீரன் முஸ்தஃபா எனும் உலகளாவிய சகோதரராக மாறுகிறார். இந்த பெயரும் கூட சிறைக்கைதிகள் அவருக்கு சூட்டியவை, அதன் பொருள் "தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவர்" . நபிமார்களுடைய மற்றும் முஹம்மது ரசூலுல்லாஹ் ஸல் அவர்களுடைய பெயரைத்தான் கைதிகள் அவருக்கு சூட்டியுள்ளனர். டெர்ரி ஹோல்ட்புரூக்ஸின் பயணம் நிச்சயமாக ரப்புல் ஆலமீனின் தேர்ந்தெடுப்பின்றி வேறென்ன இருக்க முடியும்.

அல்லாஹ்வால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட "முஸ்தஃபா அப்துல்லாஹ்" அவர்களது பாவங்களை ரப்புல் ஆலமீன் மன்னிப்பானாக, அவரது இம்மை மறுமை வாழ்வை அல்லாஹ் பொருந்திக் கொள்வானாக.. ஆமீன்..!

மிக முக்கியமான நூலை தமிழ் வாசகர்களுக்கு மொழியாக்கம் செய்துள்ள சகோதரர் எம்.எஸ்.அப்துல் ஹமீது அவர்களின் முயற்சி பாராட்டுக்குரியது. மொழிபெயர்ப்பும், எழுத்து நடையும், சுவாரஸ்யமூட்டும் திருப்பங்களுமாக ஆங்கிலத்திற்கு நிகராக அருமையாக மொழிபெயர்த்திருக்கிறார். அதேபோன்று அஹமது அர்ரஷாதி எழுதிய "The General- The Ordinary Man Who Challenged Guantanamo" எனும் நூலையும் தமிழ் கூறும் நல்லுலகிற்க்கு மொழியாக்கம் செய்து தருமாறு அன்புச் சகோதரரிடம் கோரிக்கை விடுக்கிறேன். வல்ல இறைவன் உங்களின் மிக முக்கியமான பணியை பொருந்திக் கொள்வானாக, உங்களது இம்மை மறுமையை வெற்றியாக்கித் தருவானாக.. ஆமீன்..!

I have been following all the issues surrounding the detention of captured prisoners at Guantanamo but this book lets you see the narrow minds and attitudes of those in authority from a soldier's perspective. Holdbrooks deserves a lot of credit for having the courage to write about his experience.
Once I started reading it I couldn't stop. It was so captivating that I couldn't stop reading until I finished it in one go. What I like about this book that the writer does not preach and tell you what to think, he writes in a way that gets you involved in his journey and narrates how his own conflicting thoughts and feelings develop in his own mind.

Recommend it to anyone following the continuing injustice's at Gitmo. Not a heavy read, but will have a lasting impact.

I found this book fascinating. A member of the American army becomes Muslim whilst guarding the Guantanamo Bay detainees. To say this was a brave thing to do is an understatement! I have read many books about the prisoners but this is the first one from the guards point of view. That's not to say all the guards had similar thoughts but it's good to know that at least one of them disliked what was going on. I loved the way that despite him being the 'enemy' the prisoners allowed him to discuss Islam with them. I would be extremely interested to read any follow up books to see how all their lives have progressed since then. A very good read indeed. On a side note the actual book felt lovely to hold/read.

"Traitor?" tells the story of a guard in the US Army, arriving at Guantanamo (GTMO), and allows you to see the camps through his eyes. It is a window to a detached, isolated and secret place. So much so that when you glance off the page, you wonder where you are. It hits you that you're at home -- where you belong. And where most of these people belong too.

I found "Traitor?" flowing and easy to read. It was quick too, short enough to take me just an evening to finish (and I am not a skim-reader!). There were a few army abbreviations, but the glossary was well-placed and easy to flick to in a second when needed (it's a small paperback). At the beginning, there is useful geographical overview of the camp. I did feel as though I needed a bit of help during that, but it was provided later on by a reproduction of a hand-drawn map by one of the detainees themselves.

The first and most enduring feature that strikes you about the writing style is the honesty with which Holdbrooks writes his account. As a fresh soldier in the US Army, you stay personally involved his journey, facing the consequences for a soldier in a post-9/11 America. That is to say, a soldier who questions the narrative when it's visibly inconsistent with reality. You feel what he went through; the pressure, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, and the climate of fear that energised the pressure-cooker environment in Guantanamo. Powerfully, you feel the guilt.

I bought this book in order to read an exposé about the workings of GTMO. It certainly told me a lot about that. I was misapprehended in that I expected more accounts about the torture methods used -- but Holdbrooks was a guard, not an interrogator. And although he does describe the interrogative techniques used during one chapter, his role really meant he spent a lot of time with the detainees.

Therefore, I was grateful that there were entire chapters on individual detainees, including Shaker Aamer and Ahmed Errachidi! As such, you feel his relationship with detainees grow as your own. Instead of finding a window into "what goes on at GTMO", I found a window into who these people are. As in any truly genuine biography, I felt closer to them by the end. I can say now that they occupy a much realer place in my heart. I feel like I KNOW them. And I miss them. And I want them to come home.

Holdbrooks expresses, "I hope that the year I spent in GTMO -- and my brothers' many years of trials there -- may serve some useful purpose toward the important work of enlightening hearts and minds about these issues".

For someone who says he doesn't play softball very much, I think Holdbooks has frankly batted that out of the park.

How?

For a long while, I didn't spend a day not thinking or talking about Guantanamo since I read this book. The world is a different place.

Amazing book that I always want to read again but never do. Its a tiny book so I read it pretty quickly.

Traitor? is a book that makes you angry, happy, and sad. He accounts for his time in the military guarding "the worlds most dangerous terrorists" but what he found was the opposite. Walking into a prison daily and realising that it wasn't the prisoners that were miserable, it was him. So with a lot of reflection, reading and learning. Holdbrooks becomes a Muslim and accounts for things that happen there and how the prisoners deal with a helpless situation. Their faith was something that couldn't be challenged and couldn't be crushed and I think this is what changes Holdbrooks life completely.

Just read it, thank me later.
