Margot doesn’t have time for a mate. Between her legal career, and the multitude of friends and siblings who rely on her, her schedule is full.
And if her schedule is full specifically so she doesn’t have time to find a mate? Well, that’s a matter between her and the therapist she keeps forgetting to make another appointment with.
As a travel photographer, Kit is always on the move, going wherever his clients need him to be. There’s nowhere for a nest in economy class or the backs of buses, and Kit has accepted that his choice of career means he’ll never have an omega of his own.
And he’s fine with that.
But if there’s one thing Margot and Kit have in common, it’s that no one else accepts they could possibly be happy alone.
Between them, can they hatch a scheme to keep their friends and families off their backs? Or will their best laid plans lead to the best laid something else entirely?
The Knotting Hill Omegaverse is a series of tongue-in-cheek standalone omegaverse romances, featuring characters over thirty. Suitable for readers 18+
Colette Rhodes is a paranormal romance author from New Zealand. She loves to write about love in all its forms, and adores imperfect heroes and heroines who find perfection in each other. You’ll often find her trying to justify her degree by including ancient history and mythological influences in her work.
If she’s not writing, then you’re almost certain to find her reading—ideally with a cup of tea in hand and a scented candle burning to match the mood.
Scheme was outstanding. I've always known that this author was talented but she knocked it out of the park with this one. This is how you write a happily ever after for someone who is truly deserving.
Sometimes, being a good omega meant giving a fumbling alpha a hearty shove in the right direction.
Margot is an unmated Omega. At 32, she's practically an old maid. Yet its been years since Margot has allowed rejection and her family to dictate her happiness. Now happily independent and successful; even dildos can cure pesky heats.
When Margot meets Kit through mutual friends, they become quick allies. Kit is an unmated Alpha who everyone is trying to set up with single Omegas. They become each other's personal shield. Since being unattached is an inconvenience to others...
This resonated for me. I was in my 30s when I met my husband. But prior to that, I had a big Italian family who showered me with derogatory feedback as to why l was still single and how I could snag a husband by tweaking a few things.
“Get those voices out of your head, they don’t deserve the space they’re taking up there. You. Are. Beautiful.”
I felt you Margot! How quickly you forget your self worth when you haven't followed the traditional timeline. As for Kit, I loved him. A kind Alpha if not a little clueless. The difference was that he learnt to do better. For himself and Margot.
I can't recommend this book enough. Especially if you can appreciate a romance with mature characters and bouts of vulnerability that make you feel the frustration and heartache. But there was a real beauty in watching these two fall and the intimacy was blazing. What a gem! ❤️
A contemporary romance, but with Alpha/Omega dynamics. This is a sweet, low drama, slow burn, love story between two friends.
M/f, romcom-ish Omegaverse lite One pov Main characters in their 30s Lawyer/travel photographer No virgins Fake dating trope Old fashion family Slick/knotting/purring/growling Fighting societal expectations Oddly villainess bad guy
This FMC goes against expectations of getting a mate while young and popping out babies. Instead she has quite a collection of impressive sex toys with knots. Who needs an Alpha for a heat cycle?!
I really liked both of these characters. They felt genuine in their desire to not have a mate and settle down. I liked their initial meeting, becoming friends, their brilliant communication, and slowly realizing their attraction for one another.
"Get those voices out of your head, they don’t deserve the space they’re taking up there. You. Are. Beautiful."
There were a few missed opportunities. Slight spoilers below.
Omega blood having the capacity to kill an Alpha something I have never read in a story like this. I wish the author had explained this a little better. I also was wondering exactly what happened to her family member who died. It’s just swept under the carpet? There is no investigation, police report? Does this kind of thing happen often?
I really had wished the ultimate claiming bite had been coherent and on-page. That is SUCH a significant part of becoming official couple in a omegaverse that it was a bummer to be glossed over. It’s that perfect moment of joining, a powerful moment for the rest of their lives.
I adored the story of a woman who didn't want just any alpha, but wanted someone who would make her life better than staying single.
This was a unique take on an omegaverse book. Colette Rhodes writes fantastic stories and this is one of my favorites of hers now!
I loved how both of these people are happy to be single but also, are open to the right possibility. There's a little hiccup along the way, but no third act breakup.
So many great quotes that I loved. Also, I love how he calls her Margot mine.
“I’m past the point where I feel like I should settle for whoever will have me. My life is wonderful the way it is, I’d only take a mate if they were going to add to that in a meaningful way. If they were going to make me happier than I am alone.”
---
“I meant every word I said on the beach in Brighton. Every word I’ve said since. I’m already yours, but we’re on your timeline here, Margot mine. When you’re ready for me, you’ll let me know.”
---
"If all I wanted was an easy relationship, I’ve had plenty of opportunities. But I want you. Gloriously complicated you. You’re worth the wait.”
---
“Margot is always in good hands,” Kit replied smoothly, making my pulse kick up a notch. “Her own. I’ve never met a more capable, self-sufficient person in my life. She handles every burden that comes her way, as well as everybody else’s.”
---
“What do you need?”
I melted a little in his embrace. “Just for you to be here. That’s all I need.”
“Of course. You put everyone else first. My job is to put you first. Go be selfish, Margot mine. I’m right behind you.”

Safety deets - a great HEA a year after the main story is over with them happy and mated. - no OW/OM. Tho he is pursued by/ setup with a gazillion omegas and she is pursued by a creepy alpha. - no use of protection or discussion of disease but the world building could be confusing on that.
One of my comfort authors whose books I love breaking my omegaverse slump (it’s been over a year between the last one I finished and this one, crazy). I don't know why I couldn't pick this up earlier, but I am so glad I finally did since it's so different from a lot of other omegaverse books imo (hello older main characters for example). I couldn't fully relate to Margot (h), however I adored the strength she exhibited in building a life for herself following an enormous heartbreak. She was also a multi-faceted character who could go from extreme confidence setting someone down to sacrificing parts of herself in a bid to please someone else. Kit (H) was also exactly the type of alpha to appreciate her given that a "typical" omega would never have appealed to him or been able to tempt him to re-evaluate his feelings on mating. He’s also different than a typical alpha in that he’s not familiar with all the ins and outs of omega/alpha dynamics, since he was never interested. Oh yeah, both of our mains have zero interest in finding a mate, which of course gets challenged over the course of a mutually beneficial fake courting that they enter into. The story is character-driven with a couple of smaller plot-lines that were more side plots vs. the main focus.
Written in first person, mostly single POV of h with a couple from H. No ow drama (though other omegas are interested in H, no one besides the h comes close to him), some om drama from an alpha that h's father is trying to pair her with against her will, and both characters are experienced (not a ton of info on their sexual histories, though both have participated in sex parties at a mutual friend's house - not at the same time).
Margot does have a number of insecurities regarding her appearance thanks to how others have viewed and treated her over the years. This was part of what I had a hard time relating to since there are frequent mentions of makeup, hair styles, and presenting a certain facade. I did love how Kit approached her appearance and that when it’s eventually brought up, he’s emphatic in how he sees her. Kit’s not perfect though, he makes a few errors in his interactions with Margot early on and has to show that he’s not actually a jerk. It doesn’t help his case that part of the reason he wants the fake courtship is so a group of old friends of his can’t set him up and they are huge assholes, esp to Margot. But Kit’s alpha tendencies also get triggered in a great way to be protective of the omega he’s coming to view as his. The slowness of how these two find themselves in a real relationship was built perfectly. Margot doesn’t trust it at first and Kit said and did exactly what he needed to so when they’re officially together, it was so satisfying.
I did like all the omegaverse elements with purring, knotting, heat, nesting, and of course, the discussion of a claiming bite. I did wish that the claiming had been more memorable, but heats in this world are blurs for the omegas and alphas. The steamy times are very well written btw and mostly take place before Margot’s heat even comes about. The author also added an interesting world building feature where omegas’ blood is toxic to alphas except during their heat. Related to the toxicity of omega blood, I had hoped that there would be slightly more closure on a plot line involving that related to Margot’s brother.
Plenty of supporting characters get page time, some I was happy with and others I wished would get beaten up. Margot’s two youngest siblings were fun and adorable. Her parents and the siblings closer to her age were nightmares, as were the memories of her alpha brother. The couple that are best friends with both Kit and Margot were wonderful and esp supportive and appreciative of Margot. Even though Margot’s grandmother is barely on page, she was a hoot and amazing.
I had hoped that the plot line centered on the other alpha attempting to mate with Margot would end with Kit beating the crap out of him, but sadly that wasn’t the case. Though Margot standing up to her parents finally was tremendously good. The ending is HEA with Margot and Kit mated and in love and an epilogue a year later. I absolutely recommend this one and I wish that it was read as much as her other books are, I don’t think this one got as much love sadly.
Omegaverse with realistically career-minded characters in their 30s, where it feels like they’re falling in love and not just having a biological reaction, but the steam is still scor-ohh-ching 🥵? Yes, please!
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the insta-lust/love vibes I usually get from other omegaverse books too, but I LOVED seeing Margot and Kit’s connection develop and grow stronger over the course of the book. They go from fake-dating friendly acquaintances to full-blown caregiving/soothing/mine! and gave me all sorts of heart eyes. The story is also very sex positive - both characters have hang-ups, but sex is not one of them.
Pretty sure I’ll want to re-read this at some point, so on the top-tier shelf it goes!
Loved this! Margot was independent and the kindest soul willing to do anything for anyone but at the same time, she wasn’t a doormat. Yes there were times she needed to stop putting others before her self but when it counted between her and Kit, she put him right in his place. I really like reading stories when the MCs are in their thirties. It’s refreshing and I love how self assured they come across. The romance was very cute and had its hit moments as well. Really enjoyed this one!
I liked how easily relatable Margot was. She was burdened by the expectations of others and she was a people pleaser, and while I couldn't relate to that, I could feel a kinship with her efforts to be independent, self-sufficient, and to not settle for less than she deserved. Being constantly reminded by certain members of her family that she was less than, I loved how she was still vulnerable by her poor self-worth while asserting her strengths. She was kind and generous, smart and successful, and I wanted the best for her.
Kit was completely and hilariously ignorant in the ways of alphas and omegas. I thought it was very curious that as an alpha, he didn't really know himself. However, I thought he was extremely brave when he admitted his cluelessness and made steps to correct it. He constantly put his foot in his mouth when it came to Margot, but he didn't let that foot stay there. Of course I admired him!
I found it incredibly realistic that Margot was hesitant to give Kit or her feelings for him a real shot. She was hurt and carried those scars with her every day. I'm just glad Kit was a great hero and didn't quit. They were both able to recognize something special in the other and the journey to get to their shared happiness was full of warmth, fun, and plenty of kink.
Need to review and add notes after trip! 4+ stars ------- Refreshingly funny story, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Obviously they get their HEA but it was a fun ride getting there! Some spoilers ahead.
Margot was the oldest in her large family and an event happens that changes her life to the extreme. So she has made her own life: "I wasn’t a cute little omega. I was a grown-ass woman. I was accomplished. I had at least eighteen different knot-simulation dildos that would get me off with more success than this obnoxious alpha."
I liked her attitude, with life and with Kit: "I mentally sat down on a throne and started filing my nails. Un. Bothered."
Margot and Kit are a great couple, I loved the honesty: “Do you want a cup of tea?” “No, I don’t want a cup of tea, Margot. I want to have a fucking word with this alpha who keeps bothering you.” I filled up the kettle, flicking it on and pulling out two cups. “I’ll make you a cup of tea.” Kit made a grumbling sound. “I actually do want a cup of tea." -------- "It was very inconsiderate of him to not look as stressed about this situation as I felt. He could at least pretend." -------- “What happened to your thumb?” he asked, crowding me in the entryway as he took a step forward, capturing my wrist. “Just a scratch,” I replied hurriedly, attempting to take the bag off him again, though he pulled it back out of reach with an eyebrow raised. “You’re a terrible liar.” “Sorry?” I thought about it for a moment. “No, I’m not really, I’m actually fine with being a terrible liar.”
The part that wasn't easy for me was the orgy set up, as an Omega she had NEEDS but that part did squick me out. Great story!
It has been a long ass time since I finished a book and wanted to immediately start it over again. I really might do just that. I loved this. Was it the best literature ever? No. But I loved it. Was the MFC a little annoyingly riddled with an “I’m ugly” mentality? Yes. But I still loved it. Did the love story progress seemingly too quickly? Yes. But I still loved it. You get where I’m going here. The banter was fun. The characters were fun. The story was as old as time and sometimes that’s what feels happy and comfortable.
It *felt* like a historic romance where the MMC and the MFC are being pressured by society and family to find partners even tho their happy with their single life and so they strike up an accord to fake court each other to get everyone off their backs. You know the story. But this is omegaverse edition. I know what you’re thinking - that’s just the fake dating trope, but no, this one *felt* like a historical fake dating trope - which just hits differently.
I love Rhode’s Shades of Sins series and after this book I may have to focus on more of her backlog.
Other than the end, this book really read as a contemporary romance with the focus on a marginalized group of people and societal expectations. I really liked that about this novel. Not to say it was preachy. It just had a good plot that just so happened to take place on the OV universe.
Okay yall I devoured this book in less than 24hrs. And I wish the next one was out already.
Margot is an Omega who has always seen herself as an ugly duckling and after her high school love rejected her, she ran away to the city and decided she'd sworn off finding a good Alpha.
She's the best friend, the best older sister to her youngest siblings, the best neighbor even. Everyone loves her but she has a hard time believing it's because of who she is and not what she can do for them.
In walks an equally independent anti omega Alpha. He's as accomplished as she is at his job. Hates being constantly set up and fawned all over by omegas. And is just thoroughly misinformed/uneducated about Omega/Alpha relationships. But his base instincts can't be ignored. He's drawn to Margot.
Yall this story was so sweet. I really felt for Margot and how her family made her feel less than worthy. But I loved how much effort Kit put into pursuing her. Learning about omegas, asking her friends for advice and just being so patient with her.
Do you get some delicious spice? 🌶🌶🌶.5 Most definitely but the plot and relationship growth take center stage.

On KU. Highly recommend if you're a fan of Kathryn Moon sweetverse.
Loving this author's take on omegaverse. Older MCs (thirties) living in contemporary London except this society is divided into Alphas, omegas and betas. The FMC is a plain Jane, the ugly duckling in a family with a very blessed gene pool who was once rejected by an alpha in a very humiliating way. Kit is a gorgeous Alpha just returned from globetrotting who's been burned a time or two by omegas who just want to get their mating on. So he's understandably leery of single omegas but he's also not excited about his friends and family trying to set him up. So he concocts a fake dating scheme and she goes along with it since her father is trying to set her up with a gross little dude. With her heat approaching and Kit throwing off all kinds of confusing Alpha signals, she's determined not to be burned again. I really enjoyed this series, I read Excess first because I generally don't vibe with fake dating/friends to Lovers but I love this authors voice and I'm glad I gave it a shot. My only complaint is that it really needed some third act conflict. I know a lot of people aren't into any kind of conflict nowadays but I personally love some angst in the third act. Otherwise the book loses momentum and kind of lurches to the HEA instead of sprinting there. And that's what happened here. Even so it was a good read and I can't wait to read more in the series
Kit and Margot were both 30-somethings perfectly content with the single life. But then both need a reason to keep others off their back about being single, so Kit formulates a fake dating plan. This read is jam packed with wit and snark from Margot, as it's mostly all written in her POV. We do get Kit's POV in the end, and I loved having his perspective. Margot is no damsel in distress, and at first, Kit is not her knight in shining armor. He eventually finds his metaphorical horse and learns to ride in and watch Margot save the day for herself, though, and it's his support that gives her the strength to stand up for herself. In the beginning, they find each other mutually attractive, but there's no insta-lust where they can't control themselves. Well, until the party. You know, a "special party". ;) Then Kit won't let anyone else near her, and things snowball into romance from there. It was impressive to see Kit's growth, going from an Alpha who knew mostly nothing about Omegas, to one who researched so that he could meet Margot's needs. And to see Margot finally shake off the people pleasing tendencies for her family was happiness incarnate. Kit was there to help Margot work through her past trauma by being his genuine, authentic self and showing Margot that he wanted the very same from her in return. Both characters had depth and growth, and this was a fun ride!
I have read quite a bit of omegaverse, but most of the books feature doe-eyed virgins who submit to their alphas with very little foreplay needed to get them to fall in love. So this was a really exciting read, given that it's more in my age range and experience level while still having that power difference between the couple that I have grown to love in this genre. It was so unique reading a book set in this reality where the couple are fake dating to get their families to leave them alone, especially in this particular world where it's rare for anyone to reach the "advanced age" of 32 still single. So we have a bit of "partners in crime" sort of feel that turns into friends with benefits and then finally to becoming true love. It's a little slow burn, but fear not, because they first time they get it on is at a sort of sex/orgy party. And then it's basically full steam ahead with the...well...steam.
After having her dreams and heart crushed when she was 18, and being forced to go through her first heat alone, Margot has gotten used to disappointment and has absolutely no use for an alpha mate. Single is her happy place and is preferable over the suitors her family may throw at her, particularly ones old enough to be her father. Working as a lawyer, she has created a life for herself away from her parents' influence...until her brother dies and they need her to help distract the masses from the ensuing scandal. Kit has no time for a mate of his own, since his profession as a travel photographer leaves little time for nest-making or tending to a mate. Unfortunately, he is in high demand as a successful alpha, and he is entirely uncomfortable with the situation. So Kit and Margot come up with a plan - pretend to fake date long enough to get her parents to leave her be and attend a few functions with Kit where he may be inundated with potential omega mates. Neither is interested in a relationship, so they don't anticipate that the forced proximity would lead to sparks. And that those sparks may lead to something more intimate than a simple business relationship.
I felt so bad for poor Margot, first with the crappy parents and siblings she was given in life, then with the first love crushed in the worst possible way (I can't say without spoilers but, oh, I could go on for days), and finally the panic she felt when she realized that in order to secure one of her sibling's dreams, she may have to sacrifice her own happiness. Margot was selfless, always giving to others, and she forgot about herself all the time. She had an amazing support system in her friends, who also happened to be friends of Kit, but she needed an alpha who would support her too. Enter Kit, who had no idea how to have a relationship and kept putting his foot in his mouth at every opportunity. His prejudice against omegas irked me so much at times, and it took a while for him to realize how he could change that. Thankfully, Margot, while being an amiable sort of person, also didn't take crap from anyone, including Kit. I loved that she made him work to earn back her affections. Although his other friends, those he knew in college that came back into his life, were absolutely the worst, and I was disappointed that Kit didn't tell them off on page. I wanted to see them get the stuffing beaten out of them...oh well.
I love this style of omegaverse romance, and I am really looking forward to reading more like this. We need some omegaverse that us "older folk" can relate to - HA!
**I received a free copy from the author nd this is my honest review.**
I loved it so much, it got me out (and instantly put me back) into a major bookslump.
I usually don’t like reading about slightly older characters, so I was really surprised to find that I didn’t mind that the characters were 30+. I really loved them and how awkward and human they were at times! And them together was *chef’s kiss*.
The only slightly negative point was that I’d hoped for it to focus a little bit more on the omegaverse aspects. I’d have loved more nesting, purring, even more emphasis on the scents (although there already is a lot!), and more courting (like the mMC giving the fMC gifts later on when their relationship evolves). And more about her heat! Although the heat was pretty well done here, in a way I like.
So all in all I absolutely loved this story, it gave me all the cozy feelings and made me feel for the characters. It’s really good and I’d recommend it to anyone who likes fluffy omegaverses.
When I’m supposed to finish my pending ARCs Colette Rhodes leading me awry with her latest release. (Book 2 in this standalone series is her latest hut I wanted to read in order.
There is always something in omega verse books I didn’t like but that’s not the case in this one. I adore the protagonists and how they became friends before pursuing a relationship.
Go read this book.
—Older MCs. —Fake dating, he falls first and hard. —steamy, TW and so good.
After reading a Jane Austen book, this felt quite vulgar lol. It was fine, a bit cringy and she was too insecure —annoyingly so at times. But it’s hard to find books in this genre that I don’t hate, so I can’t be too judgmental.
Amazing female character. That is difficult to find in the omegaverse, but she's so strong, rising over all her insecurities. Beautiful romance as well.
So surprising. Margot was such a lovely characters, it's very common for authors to associate independence with rudeness but she was the kindest soul. Really sweet but imposing when she needed to, although traumatized and anxious she never backed down on who she was or what she wants. Even when she was terrified of beginning this relationship with Kit.
Kit, however, is truly the book problem. I would've appreciated if we had access to his POV and, therefore, if the book was longer cause he felt like a really shallow character. Because we lacked his though process in everything that happened – coming to terms with his shitty friends being shitty, the pressure of being an alpha, the apparently complicated relationship with his mom, meeting and falling for Margot – his growth throughout the book didn't have that much impact.
Although we were presented with heartfelt speechs and emotional declarations of love, didn't felt believable. I was just happy that Margot was getting what she deserved. It was still a fun read so i rate 2.5 stars.
This was a great MF omegaverse novel with two older protagonists (early 30s) who don't want a mate and fake date to get their friends and family to stop shoving potential mates at them.
Kit was one of my favourite types of characters - grumpy but sweet and protective underneath, and all about acts of service. He was lovely. And Margot was another of my favourite types - confident outwardly but inwardly believing “I'm not good enough and I won't believe that anyone loves me”. He makes some mistakes and learns along the way and they are so good for each other. They felt like real people with real hang-ups and desires, just in an omegaverse setting.
Many omegaverse books are extremely graphic smut, I felt this one was sexy but less extreme - maybe 4 out of 5. There is knotting and slick and heat and all that omegaverse stuff, but it's just a little less descriptive than many other similar books (not a complaint, I actually preferred it)
This is a clever take on the fake dating trope. I never thought it could be used in omegaverse, but it was used to great effect here.
As usual, the author writes great dialogue. I enjoyed the banter between Margot and Kit and I loved how Margot stood up for herself. I also liked that she was a person with real fears and insecurities and she admitted it to herself but had the courage to rise up above them when the time came for her to do so. I loved her relationship and banter with her two youngest siblings as well and how she was always trying to look out for her brother, Asher.
I liked that Kit wasn't the typical dominant alpha. His diffidence and awkwardness was charming. He was willing to admit when he was wrong and he was determined to fight for what he wanted. I loved that once he'd decided that Margot was the one for him, he was firmly in her corner and was protective of her -- even though she was so independent and didn't really need it most of the time.
I didn't really like that neither Kit nor Margot had wonderful parents, but I loved the concept of 'found family' which Margot has built for herself. I would love to know if Violet and Nico (Margot's neighbours and best friends) have their own story. I always love when a couple's close friends are featured in a book, because it makes the story more rich and real. In reality, most people do have friends and their friends will get involved in one way or another when they find their significant other. Violet and Nico's support of Kit and Margo was so lovely to see.
🪢 Omegaverse Romance (MF) 🪢 FMC is in her 30s 🪢 Fake dating 🪢 Knotting 🪢 Banter 🪢 Witty characters / humorous writing 💕 🪢 FMC coming into her own / resolving family issues; people pleasing & self-confidence issues
👎 not a fan of the phrase “on the shelf” it’s depressing 👎 some miscommunication but it makes sense in the context of these characters
Firstly; I really enjoy Colette’s writing style! It’s always so fun and funny; witty; humorous phrases, and relatable / conversational. Very easy to read and really feels like you’re a friend to the characters.
The story of Margot and Kit was both funny; and mature.
They are both in their 30s with their own goals; lives; careers; and shadow work that they are doing. When they meet at a friends party and make a plan to tell everyone they’re dating so they can remain single and avoid everyone in their lives trying to play matchmaker; it propels them on a journey not only of a romantic nature, but also personal ones where they get to see the true faces of the people in their lives and reassess their own attitudes.
Horny, funny and emotional! I really enjoyed it.
“You’re doing so good. So good. Relax, I have you.”
There is something about Colette Rhodes' books that just works for me. Scheme plays with the idea of a spinster and what that would mean in an omegaverse, which led to such an interesting FMC. The thing that kept it from being a five-star read for me is that I never got a clear picture of what the heroine looked like because her self-image is SO poor. Now there are narrative *reasons* for this terrible sense of self that I think suits the story so I wasn't totally put off by it, but it kept me from being able to get a clear mental picture. But, I did enjoy the way both of the main characters pushed against the typical descriptions given in this subgenre. It was a spicy good time.
