Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM, FRS, was a Welsh philosopher, historian, logician, mathematician, advocate for social reform, pacifist, and prominent rationalist. Although he was usually regarded as English, as he spent the majority of his life in England, he was born in Wales, where he also died.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought."

Bertrand Russell was een veelzijdige Britse intellectueel, die bijna een eeuw leefde, van 1872 tot 1970, afstammeling van een oud adellijk geslacht. Hij was wiskundige, filosoof, vredesactivist en winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor letterkunde. Hij kreeg dagelijks zo’n honderd brieven die hij ook zo veel mogelijk beantwoordde. In dit boek wordt een keuze gemaakt uit de briefwisseling van 1950 tot 1968, toen hij inmiddels hoogbejaard was. Hij schrijft met hoogleraren maar ook met kinderen, waaronder een jongetje van zes. Het gaat over godsdienst, vrede en veiligheid, jeugd en ouderdom, filosofie en diverse wetenswaardigheden. Russell was niet gelovig, hij meende dat godsdienstig geloof op misverstanden berust en hij droeg die mening uit zonder anderen voor het hoofd te willen stoten. Zijn grootste zorg was de toenemende nucleaire dreiging die tot de ondergang van de mensheid zou kunnen leiden. Hij probeerde daartoe zijn invloed aan te wenden en die was gezaghebbend, door zijn grote reputatie.
Het boek vat de ingezonden brieven samen en de antwoorden van Russell worden als geheel opgenomen. Hij probeert zich aan te passen aan het taalgebruik van degenen die hem schrijven en niet gewichtig te doen. Hij blijft daarbij hoffelijk, maar windt er ook geen doekjes om. De soms sceptische stijl doet enigszins denken aan Karel van het Reve, die zich ook afzette tegen goedgelovigheid. De carrière van Russell begon in de tijd van koningin Victoria en strekte zich uit tot het eind van de jaren zestig van de twintigste eeuw, met de computer, de atoombom, de vredesbeweging van de jaren zestig. Ook onder de toen jongeren was Russell een geziene figuur. Het boekje bevat ook nu nog relevante stukken.

This delightful collection of selected correspondence between Russell and members of the general public was one of my favourite books when I was a boy. It is full of charm, wit, and insights into the human condition from one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century, e.g., "The -isms by which people attempt to justify their impulses are, in fact, products of the impulses that they pretend to justify."

Me llamó la atención cómo una persona tan famosa y ocupada se daba tiempo para contestarle a sus admiradores. Nada que ver con los famosos de estos tiempos. en cuanto al contenido en sí: es el único filósofo que dan ganas de leer por lo simple y claro de su lenguaje, y no por ello pierde profundidad.

Dear Bertrand Russell is hardly a substitute for understanding Russell's philosophy. Rather, it's a relatively lighter read, which brings to light his anecdotal thoughts on various issues. Do read it if you are a fan of Russell.

Finns mycket man skulle vilja veta mer av om denne man som hunnit med så mycket, inom så vitt skilda områden. Men sedan blev han ju gammal också och var aktiv i princip ända till sin död. Politiker, logiker, matematiker, filosof, pacifist och politisk aktivist är bara en del av de saker som ryms under epitetet Bertrand Russel. Ett namn med adlig börd och en människa att hysa respekt för. Att som åttioåttaåring sittstrejka utanför försvarsministeriet mot kärnvapen för fred, bara en sån sak. Eller att som i hans ställning, få hundra brev om dagen och ta sig tiden att svara på dem alla. Varje dag. Boken med frågeställningar och brevsvar är dock inte fullt lika intressant. Den rymmer någon intressant korrespondens och det är lite kul med tidsandan från femtio, sextiotalet som lyser genom både tonen i breven och den typ av frågor som ställs. Men annars. Nja. Är man nyfiken på Bertrand Russel finns det bättre böcker att läsa.

Lord Russell's prodigious intelligence only occasionally shines through these pages, mostly because so many of the questions he is asked are uninspired. What I learned that I did not know before was his willingness to react to pretty much anybody--he received about 100 letters a day and seems to have answered all or most of them, and his compassion and care for nearly all of his correspondence. This book was worth reading, but it gave me less than I hoped it would.

This book is so excellent, especially if you are a fan of Bertrand Russell. It is a quick and entertaining way to get an idea of most of his philosophical, mathematical, political, and personal views; with the added benefit of his wit and humor.
