A Missing Signature

Rate this book
A friend with secrets.

A dangerous painting.

A tangle of clues that don’t add up.

When mystery author Tiggy Jones leaves a London auction house, she glimpses a woman who looks a lot like her missing friend, Nessa.

The chance encounter spirals into a complex and deadly mystery that won’t let Tiggy go: coded messages, strange disguises and an old French portrait that she fears is a fake.

Will the unscrupulous art dealer really stop at nothing to get his hands on it?

And why won’t Nessa tell Tiggy the truth about what’s going on?

As the mystery deepens, and a second person is found dead, Tiggy realises that her amateur sleuthing is not safe.

For others. And for herself.

A Missing Signature is Book 2 in the addictive Tiggy Jones Mystery Series. It will keep you guessing until the final twist.

As Tiggy Jones left the auction house, she spied a person in the distance that looked like her missing friend from Australia, Nessa. Tiggy gave chase, but the person either didn't hear her, or wasn't Nessa. Dispirited, she wasn't sure what to do, except continue with the mystery novel she was writing. A famous writer, Antigone Jones was on a deadline, but her scattered mind wouldn't let her concentrate. Raider, her beloved Dalmador, was always there for comfort and encouragement though.

When Nessa got in touch with Tiggy, the mystery and intrigue continued. Tiggy couldn't work out what Nessa was up to - and Nessa wouldn't tell her. Something to do with famous art work, fraudulent copies, a person who had attempted to kill Nessa, and a Manor House which housed old artwork. But was it all genuine, or a figment of Nessa's imagination? A grave with a skeleton; a body in a rental - Tiggy, Baxter and Rupert knew things had become quite serious and obviously dangerous...

A Missing Signature is the 2nd in the Tiggy Jones Mystery series by Aussie author Virginia King and it's an exceptional follow up to the first in the series. Filled with fascinating characters - Reggie, Sal, Henry, Verity to name a few - along with our main characters, make A Missing Signature a wonderful read which I highly recommend.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Virginia King seems incapable of writing a cliché. Even when she writes what she calls a traditional British mystery, it’s more original and unusual than that description implies. The plot is intricate and full of surprises, and the nature of the crimes reminds me a bit of the early British mystery novel, The Moonstone, in which the primary crime is the theft of a valuable and rare object, and the ancillary murder comes later. This book centers around art theft and forgery and duplicitous relationships—people who aren’t who they seem to be. The layers of trickery are believable yet entirely unpredictable.
I like Tiggy Jones. She’s refreshingly natural and self-assured. She makes contributions to solving the mysteries as amateur sleuth, daring to uncover the secrets she can while working with the police appropriately for incidents that are out of her scope.
As well as a riveting, ever-twisting mystery, this is also a book about friendship. An outstanding character is Tiggy’s teenaged friend and dog-walker, Baxter. I applaud King for creating one of the rare autistic characters I’ve come across in fiction who is whole and real with positive talents and aspirations. His neurodivergence is his operating system, neither inferior nor superior to the neurotypical, and he navigates the world aware of this. The rapport between him and Tiggy is genuine, transcending differences in age and neurotype. Baxter’s honesty and bluntness, and the reliable support from Tiggy’s friends Henry and Rupert, contrast with the deviousness of her supposed best friend Nessa. In a way, Nessa herself is a mystery
If you enjoy an intense multi-layered story that will keep you guessing, read this. I look forward to the next installment in the series.

Outside a London auction house, Tiggy catches a quick glimpse of a lady in the crowd who looks very much like her best friend in Australia, Nessa, but loses her in the crowd. When they do get together, Nessa acts strangely, doesn’t completely answer questions, changes her story, and leads Tiggy on a twisting, turning exploration of the dark aspects of the art world, exposing fraud, theft, and finding an occasional corpse along the way. Is Nessa in trouble and afraid to tell the truth? Or has she become involved in shady activities? Tiggy wants to help her friend, but now feels she is being used, and fears for her life. I was completely engrossed in the story, and did not want to put the book down, losing some sleep in the process.
Ms. King’s plots are well-designed and fast moving, her characters are strong and deeply developed and her vivid descriptions make me feel that I’m watching a movie. I am eager to read more in this series, and, indeed, more of her works. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion – and I purchased a copy to support this outstanding author.

This is the second book in the Tiggy Jones series of British mysteries and each book stands alone really well. I would still read them all in series order anyway, but that’s my fear of missing out that kicks in when it comes to books/authors that I enjoy!

In this story, we follow Tiggy as she investigates a mystery that was teased at the end of book 1: why has her best friend back home suddenly stopped answering her texts? And that one simple question plunges the reader straight into an adventurous investigation packed with art history and assault, mudlarking and murder, theft, fraud, and lies upon lies upon many more lies!

But can Tiggy – along with her Polka-Dot Pooch and trusty Devonian ‘andsomes – SPOT the untruths and solve the mysteries as they twist all around her?

Clever, meticulously plotted and bursting with intrigue, great characters and a lovely taste of local flavour, this series is a real treat for any British mystery fans and will definitely keep you guessing… and reading!

Tiggy Jones Mystery Series:
A Scrap of Silk, #1 - A very interesting, intriguing mystery with a bit of suspense from one of my favorite authors. Well written with plenty of intrigue mixed with good story lines and a variety of characters, not all are likeable. This was a difficult to put down book but I needed a cuppa here and there. I really enjoyed Baxter's character, and Raider, of course. I recommend all the books by this talented author. 5*

A Missing Signature, #2 - One of my favorite authors and I love this series. The review for this book is the same as for 'A Scrap of Silk'. Full of twists and intrigue, which keep Tiggy in turmoil and frustration. 5*

Lots of twists and turns in this second book of this great new series.
Tiggy is settling in to her new life when her best friend seems to have disappeared. Nessa then begins of game of cat and mouse with Tiggy which leads her into a mystery in the art world; auctions, theft, fraud and of course, murder. With friends like Nessa, who needs enemies. I love the characters in Tiggy's new village and of course Raider the dog. Along with Baxter (the young man on the autistic spectrum who is quite the hero), Rupert who watches out for Tiggy and others. A complex plot will keep you interested and guessing. A good puzzle. Looking forward to Tiggy and Raider's next adventure.
I received and ARC and voluntarily provided this review.

A Missing Signature is book #2 in the Tiggy Jones Mystery Series series by Virginia King.

Tiggy has lost touch with her friend, Nessa. Outside a London auction house, she thinks she sees her. Is it her or is Tiggy imagining things?

I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t wait to see how the threads of the various stories were woven into a masterful story. It was interesting trying to figure out people’s motives and whether they could be trusted. I enjoyed how Tiggy was taking her experiences and putting them into her book. I could never have guessed how things would wrap up. I was as surprised as Tiggy. I look forward to the next book to see what is in store for Tiggy and her friends.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Tiggy has been worried about Nessa, the friend she had left in Australia when she inherited her grandmother's old house. When coming out of an auction house she saw someone she was sure was Nessa but she disappeared before Tiggy could speak to her. It is not long before Nessa gets in touch & before long Tiggy is involved in Nessa's drama! Tiggy's deadline for her latest book draws close but instead of sorting that out she is involved in a real murder mystery.

I loved the first Tiggy Jones book & was looking forward to meeting some of the characters I had loved as well as meet new ones! Tiggy is a great friend to have - even if she doesn't always chose them wisely! Another great read!

A missing friend has reappeared and with her she brings an intriguing story. Will Tiggy find herself wrapped up and can she distinguish between the lies and the truth. Will she solve this conundrum before her new friends are entangled and perhaps put in danger.
Never a dull moment and a supercharged story. I could not wait to finish this book and see how it all would play out. Trust me you will not want to put it down.
Tiggy is up to her neck in mystery again. For a mystery writer she could just write her memoirs, and everyone would buy the book.

Even better than the first in series!!

Tiggy sees her friend Nessa in London. Or does she? Why is Nessa ignoring her? They connect later but Nessa's story keeps changing. Is she just using Tiggy or is she really in danger? Theft, fraud, old art works, and of course a body or two to keep things interesting. Can Tiggy unravel the clues and lies before she becomes the next victim? With everything happening I have dubbed Ms. King as the Queen of Twists! Such a good story, I can't wait for the next one!!

I received an ARC. This is my honest review.

Just how much of a true friend is Nessa? All she seems to be feeding Tiggy are lies and half-truths. What is even worse is that she put not only Tiggy's life in danger, but also the lives of two of Tiggy's closest friends.

The twist at the end was a pleasant surprise but did not change my perspective of Nessa. That is one friend that Tiggy can well do without!

A great book and very easy to read, BUT I found the author a little "all over the place" when it came to solving the mystery..

I loved this second book in the Tiggy series.
Tiggy Jones has made herself at home with new friends in the UK. But life suddenly gets turned upside down when she reconnects with her best friend of Australia.
Nessa seems to be using Tiggy’s friendship for her own purpose.
The lies are building up and this reader becomes afraid that there isn’t a good ending for Tiggy. For how long is Tiggy going to keep trusting Nessa. The end will surprise you and ones again Tiggy returns to the comfort of spending time with her local friends. An easy read full of twist and turns that will keep you engaged till the end. Already looking out for the third book in the series.

I've read ( and enjoyed) all the Selkie Moon books, and before reading the first in the new series I was interested to see if a less paranormal novel would still be as interesting, entertaining and well written. Additionally I live locally to Topsham, so was looking forward to the first, albeit with a little trepidation as its rare an author nails the locale.
Short answer? It is and she does, so I was particularly looking forward to the second, which felt a little longer than the first - in a good way; we meet new ( and old) characters, and there's a lot going on which made it really hard to set aside and get on with my day!
Another ideal holiday read. I'm hoping that there will be more in the series

Tiggy thought that Nessa was her bestie, until things were beginning to look extremely dubious. And with a large fortune in the balance, does friendship take a back seat? Do people betray, lie and even kill for money? Yes, they do and trust and friendship no longer matters anymore.

Another page turner from Virginia King. Well written, as always, intriguing and exciting. But what really blows my mind is the amount of research and thought that must have gone into this book - brilliant!
