"How to Write" books come a dime a dozen these days. In my experience, they either A) state the obvious B) state the erroneous or C) both of the above

Here's one of the exceptions. Over seven years it's become the swiss army knife in my writer's toolbox.

Occasionally hindered by the fact that it is dated, male, and pathologically committed to its obscure interpretations of classic literature, this book nonetheless offers considerable insight on plot and scene structure, character, dialogue, and connecting ideas. The 'Proposition' develops an easy, syllogism-style test for plot cohesion of an active central character and a controlling theme for works that focus emphatically on a single protagonist.
