Horror Hotel #2

Cursed Cruise

Rate this book
From the authors of Horror Hotel , called "fast-paced and freaky" by #1 NYT bestselling author Kendare Blake, comes another addictive YA horror about a group of teen ghost hunters who are invited to travel onboard a haunted historic cruise ship.

All aboard...

After their fateful stay at the Hearst Hotel, the Ghost Gang is back with more spooks and more subscribers. They’ve been invited to record onboard the RMS Queen Anne, a transatlantic luxury ocean liner with a colorful past of violent deaths of hundreds of passengers—souls that bought a one-way ticket to the afterlife (and never disembarked).

When Chrissy, Chase, Kiki, and Emma board the ship, they have a funny feeling they’ve been sucked into a ghostly time warp—a theory that takes a frightening turn when Chrissy goes missing on the first night.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the group, Chrissy has been sucked into another time by a passenger who wants the Ghost Gang to know her untimely death was not an accident and the perpetrator is still alive—and on board this ship.

Cursed Cruise, by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren, is the second book in the Horror Hotel series. These books follow a group of teen ghost hunters, Chrissy, Chase, Emma and Kiki, who have their own YouTube show.

In the first book, which I haven't read yet, the teens stay at a haunted hotel in L.A., that I am imagining to be like the Cecil Hotel. The events of that book are referred to here, but I don't feel you need to read that one first. I didn't and don't feel my enjoyment of this was impeded at all.

However, I will say, after reading this, I definitely want to go back and read that one now. It sounds like it was intense, and I think the setting of the hotel would be really fun.

In this one, the teens get invited on the first voyage of a recently recommissioned cruise ship, the RMS Queen Ann, which gave me total QE2 vibes. I've read mysteries set on the QE2 and really enjoyed them, so was excited to see something similar in a Teen Horror novel.

The ship has a dark history, with many deaths and dark happenings occurring aboard over the years. It's assumed to now be haunted.

The Ghost Gang is not the only ghost hunting team making this maiden voyage though. There's another group, a bit older and more experienced then our mains, that cause a bit of tension.

They're not very kind and the groups have a bit of a competitive spirit amongst them. They both have their sights set on a syndicated television slot. Chase, from our group, really has his heart set on getting that show.

There's also a bit of romance in the group, with Chase and Chrissy in a relationship, and Emma and Kiki in a relationship. They do have an adult chaperone as well; I think it was Kiki's Mom, although she wasn't too big of a presence, I still liked having her there.

We follow along as the teens get settled into their cabins and begin investigating the history of the ship and the bizarre occurrences happening aboard. Chrissy is the one with the most connection to the supernatural, so we get a lot of those aspects from her perspective.

I thought it was interesting that the author's included the ship's perspective. You don't see that very often, but when you do, I tend to enjoy it. I like the feel of a place, or thing, becoming a character unto itself. It's interesting and I thought it was fun here.

Overall, this was good. I think the authors delivered on what was intended. If I were going to pin this down to a recommended age category, I would put it into a more Tween Horror niche than YA Horror.

I feel like this is more advanced than a Goosebumps, but may best be enjoyed by Readers aged 11 to 14. It's a great stepping stone to more advanced Horror. I know I would have loved it had it been a part of my Point Horror line-up from the mid-80s. Totally cool.

Thank you to the publisher, Underlined, for providing me with a copy to read and review. This was cute. It definitely had a nostalgic feel for me!

They need to get a dog because I love the Scooby Doo vibes. I think this one was less spooky than book one, but still a good time. The mystery was actually solved in this one, so another plus. I would’ve liked more about the curse, since that did seem like a pretty easy fix. I will say the book spoils book one at the beginning, so if you’re curious about book one, I’d just read it first.

The audiobook was well produced and had a full cast for all the main characters which I enjoyed. Audiobooks help destabilize me while I’m reading a thriller—since I can’t jump a paragraph or something—so I definitely recommend reading it via audio.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5

ok so this review is coming from someone who LOVED Horror Hotel

-i keep seeing reviews saying you don't need to read the first one. yes, yes you do. read the first one FIRST
-gorgeous cover
-enjoyed seeing how the relationships from the first progressed into this new book, but there was WAY too much of it going on
-the spooky scenes were written well, i could picture them clearly in my mind
-sentient boat? uh, i tried but i wasn't a fan
-could just be me but throwing a random ass in there was so weird to me, it should have been all about it or not even mentioned
-the "paranormal patrol" rivalry element could have been cool, but it wasn't fleshed out enough AT ALL. they should have at least witnessed what chrissy was capable of
-could have been way better, and is such a letdown as i was so excited

I'm so happy that we got another book with the Ghost Gang!
This kind of horror is one of my absolute favorites, following around a group of ghost hunters who are filming for youtube or some tv show and we get a front-row seat when poo hits the fan.
I was hooked from the beginning when we opened to Chrissy and the rest of the Ghost Gang editing their newest ghost hunt while the ghost of a man hangs out in their closet. They then go to the RMS Queen Ann, an uber-haunted ship with a famous ghost called The White Lady to film their next ghost-hunting adventure.
From the moment they step foot on the luxury ocean liner things go wonky and it's just the start of the super spooky and creepy ghost-filled boat ride. I love the dynamics between our group, and the new pairings since the last book. They make the perfect friend group and the perfect ghost-hunting team. Along with getting a POV from each of our Ghost Gang members we also get a unique perspective that makes you rethink your idea of a haunted location and I LOVED IT!
As I said above we get POVs from each character and usually, I have a favorite that I am always super eager to get back to, but in this series, I love seeing from each of their viewpoints and am just excited to be moving along in the story.
I loved the characters, the plot, how immersed I was in the story, how creepy everything felt, the mystery, and the plethora of ghosts aboard the ship.\ I hope that we get more books featuring the Ghost Gang!! I want to see them go to all the haunted places and help all the ghosts.

DNF at 60%. I tried, y’all, but it just did NOT hold my attention. I liked the first book okay and wanted to like this one, but I could not hang. The authors’ misuse of “sus” happened three too many times in the 150+ pages I read and the cringe was just too powerful for me to continue.

Original
I'm always a sucker for a skull cover! 💀 I admit that I haven't read Horror Hotel and I've read mixed reviews, I'm excited to check that one out and give this follow-up a shot!

DNF. I loved the cover and that’s what drew me in. I didn’t know though, when I bought it, that it was book 2 of a series and young adult so I’m probably not the right audience anyway. Saying that, there are a lot of YA books that I’ve read and enjoyed but I just couldn’t get into this.

I can handle different narratives but they were flipping between points of view every few pages and I was losing track as to which character was “speaking“. Quite a few times I had to flip back to see which character it was and this just took me out of the story.

It was also boring/annoying how the book reminded us every other page of who was in a relationship with who. Yes - I got it the first couple of times.

Maybe as a *cough cough* older reader, I don’t understand the modern writing style for younger readers.

I didn’t read the first one, rip, but these characters are supposed to be 18??? It felt like they were written by a 14 year old and this is just what they think an 18 year old is like. I know that’s harsh but if I had to read the word ‘sus’ one more time i was gonna lose my mind 🥲

Thank you to Underlined for my copy of this book! It was about the Ghost Gang, a group of teens that searches for ghosts and shares about it on their YouTube channel. Chrissy can see ghosts and they can communicate through her. They join a cruise ship voyage where many people were said to die in the past, leading people to believe the cruise ship is cursed. The group wants to get to the bottom of the ship’s history and hopefully have some ghostly interactions for themselves.

Thoughts: Let me just say, you absolutely have to read Horror Hotel before you read this book, which I did not. That led to me not enjoying this book as much and not understanding characters, personalities, and references. I loved the idea of a haunted cruise ship, and teen ghost hunters with a YouTube channel was a fun premise. I love cruises and I think the idea of being trapped at sea is both fun and terrifying.

That being said, this book was confusing and a bit odd. There were so many random things thrown in that it got a bit hard to follow. There are lots of unique and interesting ghosts, but the only way to really enjoy this book is to just go with the flow of weird and unusual. It’s a fun YA, but definitely not anything more than that. 2.5 stars.

Cursed Cruise is the sequel to Horror Hotel. I thought that was just OK, so I shouldn't have been surprised that this one would be the same. The story finds the four ghost hunters getting ready to set sail on a haunted cruise ship. Do not read this one if you haven't read the first one. There are some major spoilers here.

I wasn't completely enamored with this second story. The four have split off into couples and, boy, are we reminded of that fact constantly. It definitely got old and really was unnecessary. There are multiple perspectives, even one of the ship herself. Because of the many perspectives, it seemed like there was too much going on supernaturally. With the many story lines, it felt unfocused. I hated the explanation for the "evil" on the ship. It really came out of nowhere and was almost an afterthought. I would have liked this more had it been more focused. There were some spooky parts and I did like the PTSD aspect that one of the characters as dealing with from the first book. It was a quick read and that was to its benefit.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook.
I was really really looking for to this book. I figured Ghost ship would be perfect for Halloween 🎃 month...but nope.. it was a DNF for me. I didn't know this is part of a series and usually you can read a book out of order and feel like you are not missing too much but nope! Not with this book. You absolutely have to read the first book because I felt really out of the loop. The writing is just bad. It is like someones thoughts journal and it is just all over the place. The characters all felt like middle schoolers. Just a hard pass.

First, thank you netgalley for my e-ARC of this book! Before I get into any opinions on the actual book, I have to say the cover is absolutely stunning and is what initially caught my attention. I didn’t read the first book but don’t think you need to in order to read this one. It just felt more young reader than young adult which I wasn’t a fan of. The concept of an Egyptian Sarcophagus hidden on a boat really just threw me off and like an unnecessary detail. The ship itself being a haunted vessel with ghosts would have been just fine for a plot. Overall it wasn’t my cup of tea.

“We’re better when we work together, when we don’t have secrets. What happened at Hearst Hotel taught us that.”

REVIEW

Thank you to Underlined, TBR and Beyond Tour, and Netgalley for providing me with a digital Arc in exchange for an honest review! All quotes are taken from the Arc and therefore subject to changes.

1) There’s a cursed ship! The Queen Anne was the sister ship of the Titanic and has now been refurbished to serve as a cruise ship. More than a hundred people have died on board which makes it a prime haunting location. The Ghost Gang was invited for the first voyage to get the ship some press and is determined to give their dedicated viewers another suspenseful case! I loved the cruise ship setting and the sinister atmosphere! In between the chapters there’s sometimes an intermission written from the POV of the ship and you can’t help but feel like the Queen Anne is alive … and hungry for blood. This case is bigger than anything Chrissy and co. investigated before and I loved the rumors of a curse that has befallen the ship

2) The Ghost Gang is back together for another case. I loved Chrissy, Chase, Kiki and Emma in the first book and was so happy we got another book with them! Their channel has blown up even more since the Hearst Hotel case and Chase is hoping that they might finally get recognized by Hollywood. Their new (sleazy) manager isn’t a big help though and Chase isn’t willing to compromise his ideals just to get a pilot episode. I loved how everyone was dedicated to keeping the Ghost Gang’s core values like they were instead of changing themselves for a TV channel! This time there’s also a special guest on the trip: Kiki’s mom Billie has to accompany them, but she doesn’t really understand all this ‘ghost stuff’ no matter how much Kiki wishes she’d accept her hobby!

3) We see how the last haunting affected all of them. I loved the insight into the characters and their relationships. Chrissy’s the most affected by the ship as she’s a natural psychic and her boyfriend Chase is terrified when she gets contacted by another spirit that won’t let her go! He’s struggling with being professional for their channel but also being worried about the most important person in his life. Kiki’s still not sure what to think about her mother being on board as they’ve drifted apart lately. She wishes her mom would accept their ghost hunting and her new girlfriend Emma. I loved the complicated mother-daughter dynamic, as Billie loves her daughter but isn’t as accepting as she could be. Kiki also feels helpless because Emma’s been struggling and not talking to any of her friends. Emma was hit the hardest by the Hearst case and has some lingering trauma from being attacked and almost dying. She has no idea how to open up to her friends! I loved that the personal issues of the characters were woven together with the dangerous case to create an ominous atmosphere!

4) There’s a rival YouTube crew on board 👀 They aren’t a huge part of the story, but it was interesting to see the Paranormal Patrol, one of the biggest rivals! They have a huge YouTube following as well and are the antithesis of the Ghost Gang. Led by Tina – a fake psychic who claims to communicate with her dead sister – they are all about the special effects and drama, instead of helping the dead move on. Chrissy’s especially annoyed as respecting the dead and helping them move on is important to her. It’s especially interesting to see both groups interact as Hollywood seems to want people like Tina and her crew who are edgy and dramatic!

5) The story is engaging from start to finish! I flew through this book as it was so engaging! I was fully immersed in the mystery of Queen Anne, the rivalry with the other ghost gang and the scary things that started happening. This case is much bigger than the last one and with the ship being sentient to some degree, the crew is in a lot of danger. Chrissy feels like there’s something wrong from the beginning and things just get more intense afterward! I really hope we get another adventure with the Ghost Gang in the future, I love reading about their cases 🥰

“Entertainment for entertainment’s sake. The Paranormal Patrol – they’re not ghost hunters. They’re fame hunters.”

This book had kind of a slow start, but once it picked up, I really enjoyed it! I loved the chapters that were from the POV of the ship. It was different and added more perspective to the story. Definitely a fun, quick read if you hang in there through the beginning. Also, you really need to read the first book, Hotel Hell, before this one because if you don't, you lose a lot of the character background and some of the bigger plot points will not make sense to you.

Thank you to Random House Children's and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of "Cursed Cruise" by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren in exchange for an honest review.

Following the events of "Horror Hotel" the Ghost Gang has returned to investigate another wildly haunted place, the cruise ship The Queen Anne. The Queen Anne is famous for hundreds of onboard deaths since it was first launched, including the highly publicized "suicide" of an heiress in the 1980s. The heiress, Elizabeth, is now said to haunt the Queen Anne as a Woman in White type ghost. Naturally the Ghost Gang has signed up to join the ship's relaunch following (a supposedly thorough) retrofit in drydock.

Joining them on this trip is Kiki's mother, Billie, who clearly has complicated feelings about how Kiki is managing her life at the moment, and a rival gang of ghost hunters, the Paranormal Patrol. The Paranormal Patrol are the Ghost Gang's exact opposites in every way, so much so that they are basically the GG's evil twin, stopping just short of sporting goatees. At first, it seems like the PP will be important plot component but apart from some possession late in the book, they are really nonentities.

The first thing to know is that the Ghost Gang, made of Chrissy, Emma, Kiki, and Chase, has learned very little from their near fatal experience at the Hearst Hotel. They withhold vital information from one another, they split up to follow ghosts around (predictably nearly dying in doing so), and they make very rash decisions. This silly behavior fuels the plot, kinda, but also makes you wonder how these the people have survived this long.

For so short a story, it packs in a great deal of absurdity. Without too many serious spoilers, the ship is sentient, there may or may not be an Egyptian curse on it because of a mummy that may or may not be stashed onboard (which, if so, the workers mysteriously overlooked during the retrofit.) One of the tragic deaths onboard involved the former ship's chef, who was cooked alive in the ship's walk-in oven by his kitchen staff. There's a little girl ghost who drowned in a pool, and for some reason, ghost of the captain of the Titanic, Captain Edward Smith, is also onboard. He doesn't actually do much apart from leaning on the railing to look for icebergs. (The fictional Queen Anne is supposed to have been built by the same company that built the Titanic. That's all the explanation you get for his presence.) There may be more to Elizabeth's death than authorities previously believed, and the ship makes it very clear that it does not approve the Ghost Gang interfering with any of it.

But fear not, everything gets resolved in a... mostly good way?

The only way to enjoy this story is to really just lean into the ridiculousness. The scares are cheap, there's no real build up of tension, and it's very hard to take seriously any story that invokes an ancient Egyptian curse.* So this is recommended for readers that want a quick and easy ghost story that doesn't make you work too hard and for readers that will embrace the "it's so bad, it's good" humor in the story.

*The 1999 cinematic masterpiece The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, being the sole exception.

Normally I’m not a fan of constant pov changes – and when they’re in the same chapter – but I didn’t find that so annoying here? Plus they’re all first person pov and didn’t annoy me – which was another win as I often find them annoying. Big kudos to the two authors for managing to pull that off!

Of course when you have an ensemble group it could become difficult to differentiate between their voices and personalities but that didn’t seem to be the issues here. All the povs were in first person yet I never really got confused as to whose pov I was reading.

I already knew The Ghost Gang from the previous book but I liked how they took the events from it and made sure it affected them in this book. That they wouldn’t forget them (hard to, considering what they’d been through) and it’s a good reminder that trauma shows itself in many ways and it’s a difficult thing to navigate.

The characters improved in this book and I liked seeing that. Looking back at my review for the first book I said Chrissy was my favourite and Chase, my least. I liked Chase much better this turn around! I said in Horror Hotel that he felt like cared more about the fame and the group. And that I hoped that he would change that in the future. That definitely was the case here! He not only improved as a character (in my eyes); he cared more about the group than their fame (current and any they could get in the future). I liked him more for that. I think for this book Emma and Kiki also improved as characters for me. Actually for this book none of them stood out as a clear favourite? As I liked all of them really well.

I didn’t really like Billie, Kiki’s mom. Honestly, I didn’t really understand why she was on the ship with them. I warmed up to her late into the book but I could’ve done without her.

I didn’t like the whole subplot of the mummy. I thought it was just pushed in there when maybe the editors thought there wasn’t enough tension and another subplot needed to be added. We could’ve had another book with the cursed mummy plot instead of just shoving it into here and not giving it enough space to fully spread its wings.

I liked the other bits of the plots. A ghost haunting of the ship and “oh there’s a lady in white wandering the ship” – I loved that. I love haunting stories and they don’t get old to me – that is basically what Horror Hotel was too. The Ghost Gang made sure to be respectful to the story, which was good, and solving it was important not only for their Youtube channel.

Even though I didn’t like the Paranormal Patrol (also the name is stupid), I did like what they brought to the table. The difference between the two groups, what they both wanted from solving the mystery. How they treated the mystery – respect versus fame. Also how the internet/Hollywood wanted to see them. Like the Ghost Gang are teenagers, why would you push them to sex it up? They’re not on Riverdale or Euphoria (most certainly as those teens are played by near 30 year olds).

All aboard this spooky ghostly cruise! I have to be honest this cover I kept staring at and staring at because who doesn’t love a middle grade haunted story with THAT cover? I am such a weakling! 😂 Grabbed this one after constantly going back to it and I am happy to report I enjoyed it! Who wouldn’t love a group of teenaged ghost hunters? It was a little like ghost busters! In this story we follow the group of ghost hunters that were invited to ride on the RMS Queen Ann. They are there because they have heard this cruise ship has hundreds of lost souls who have died once on board. So many people have boarded only to never leave. 👀 They aren’t sure really what they believe until one of them gets pulled into a time warp after the first night of being there. Once she’s there she realizes these ghosts have a message they are trying to portray and it’s up to the ghost hunters to figure it out!

This one is actually book two to a Horror Hotel series. It read completely fine as a standalone! My favorite part of the story was the time warp and how Chrissy was able to become one of the ghosts and communicate on the other side! I thought the author did a great job creating the perfect amount of creepiness with the ghosts for the audience. This is marketed as a young adult book but felt a little more like middle grade to me with the exception of there being a couple references to “making out, kissing etc.” I mention that so if you plan to grab it for your child you know it’s in there. Anyway, I thought this was the perfect change up in my book pace and will love to see what is next up for the Horror Hotel crew!

Disclaimer: I didn’t read Horror Hotel, but still felt like I was able to jump right into this story!!

There were so many fantastic elements happening in this book - a haunted cruise, two rival ghost hunting teams, and a ton of ghosts!

It fell flat for me when it came to the horror element - I am absolutely terrified of ghosts, but from the moment the first one was introduced, I didn’t really feel any sort of fear. Really would have enjoyed this one more if the authors really leaned in to the creep factor.

This one comes out on March 19!!

MY REVIEW:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just LOVED this book. I've really been getting into YA Thrillers, and this was a perfect one. Kept me on the edge of my seat, tons of freaky moments, spirits and ghosts galore, and finally getting revenge for a decades old murder! - and all done by 18 year olds!!!!! I mean, what more can you want?!

I was sad however, that I didn't get to read the first book in this series, but unlike other books in a series - this one covered all the bases from where the last book left off. So this didn't change my rating at all. I did not feel lost at all, and I feel like I am part of the "Ghost Gang" at the very end of this.

I loved the combination of friendship, relationships, and teamwork.
I sincerely hope they continue this series because I love this gang and hope they go on more awesome crazy ghostly journeys.

Libby: The first book was better. The author mostly seemed to forget about the sensory issues that were like constantly brought up in Horror Hotels and suddenly now the psychic girl can sort of transport in time / gets possessed and also now some of the other characters can interact with ghosts? Not sure if these things will continue with the series or just because the ship was cursed and not haunted (though there were still ghosts so also haunted?)

Read by full cast. #booksin24

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Cursed Cruise coming out March 19, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I loved the first book in this series. I love haunted hotels, so I was definitely excited to receive the second book. The premise of a cursed cruise sounded really fun. I enjoyed most of the plot. It was a quick read. I feel like there could’ve been a little more character development. Some of the characters felt different than the last book. I guess a lot of it was their struggles from their previous experience. I think the first half was a little slow for me, but I loved the second half of the book. I don’t think it was as scary as I thought it would be.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys supernatural location stories!

When I saw this book had an eARC available, I instantly put a request in for it.

Cursed Cruise is a sequel to Horror Hotel, which follows a group of teenage YouTube Paranormal Investigators, The Ghost Gang. The RMS Queen Anne has been collecting victims for a century; the ship revels in the murders of these victims, feeding her.

The Ghost Gang gets invited to travel on the RMS Queen Anne for its inaugural voyage after the ship got revamped for the modern era. The Ghost Gang is hoping to catch a video on the famous ghost The Lady in White, Elizabeth Walker, who supposedly jumped overboard a week before her wedding in 1984. The ship is said to be cursed by King Ramses VII, who was stowed away when the ship took its maiden voyage.

This book’s creep factor was dialed up, which caused me to pause a few times while reading. I loved the mystery of The Lady in White, Elizabeth, and if she committed suicide as everyone had thought or if she was murdered. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I found it interesting that the ship got a slight POV and showed us what the curse of the mummy was doing to her.

Thank you, NetGalley, Victoria Fulton, Faith McClaren, and Random House Children’s for the ARC

This book was worse than the first one just because of the writing. The story was really intriguing but the writing really threw me off. The amount of slang used just really didn't do it for me, and the plot twist was yet again rushed. Happy that they got their happy ending tho ig.

Ghost Gang!!! As long as Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren keep pumping out these Horror Hotel novels, I’ll keep reading them.

Was this a "good book"? Not technically. However, it was engaging and entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole Captain Smith thing was very weird, but I generally don't turn up my nose at Titanic mentions, so hey.

I much prefer history visions to a serial killer. Scooby Doo gang meet Hollywood and find out what their goals really are.
