I have not read all of this book, but did use large sections for research. It tries to cover a lot of ground. I respect that, but also feel that it falls short in some areas. Part of the trouble is that has become somewhat dated.
I was particularly interested in BDSM practices and female submissiveness, but the idea of women having fantasies about violence or non-consent is almost entirely overlooked by Lips. I understand that there is a lot of stigma against BDSM in the feminist community, because it hits far too close to the bone for those who have experienced actual rape or abuse. But still, it exists as a fantasy, even amongst feminists. Ignoring it doesn't resolve the issue or unravel the mystery. A source that did help me on the other hand was an essay by Stacey May Fowles in the book Yes Means Yes. Her essay is titled "The Fantasy of Acceptable Non-Consent...".
