It All Started With You
I always thought I was going to be a girl who did something. I was going to run my own business and find fame and fortune! Fall in love… But here I am. Still waiting for it all to happen, sitting on the floor, surrounded by lilies and roses, trying to do my best friend’s wedding flowers because – in her words – ‘how hard can it be, Frankie?’. The answer is actually ‘very hard’ but it’s not the only thing that’s tough right now. My boyfriend won’t commit, I barely have a job, and once again I have the hangover from hell… What I don’t know is that life’s about to throw me a curveball. I have read and loved three other books by this author. In this one, our main character, Frankie, opens up a flower shop and learns some lessons along the way. Frankie really grew as a character and a human being in this story. I loved her friendship with Honey (I have a cousin by that name!) and how they supported each other. Honey too goes on a journey of self-discovery and changes some things she doesn't like about herself...Strong women helping strong women, I loved that!
As I mentioned, Frankie opens a flower shop and I enjoyed the way the flora was described, I could picture the way they looked and imagine how they smelled, it was visceral. The author is obviously very knowledgeable about the running of a flower business and the plants themselves. You could tell she once did this for a living.
This novel is poignant, very touching and laugh-out-loud funny at times. There is much sadness in the plot but in the end also some healing and a lot of hope. Frankie finally learns what's really important in life thanks to her new friend Lulubelle and her son Cosmo. I really connected to the characters and felt their pain as my youngest son was ill when he was little and spent a lot of time in the hospital. I enjoyed reading about Frankie as she slowly becomes self aware, it's a wonderful trait for a person to have. I look forward to reading The Shape of Your Heart by this author, it was released in February and is sitting on my "to be read" shelf.

It all started with you book is such a surprisingly sweet and yet sad read for me. I almost DNF this book at the start as its quite confusing on what the book try to deliver. But for like 30% of the book, I start to get hooked. This book is perfect for people who love Slice of life genre.

Both her and Frankie is on a journey of self-discovery, but also slowly deepened their friendship too. I love that.

I just couldn’t with this book. While the author has published over 10 books, this was the first book she wrote and it definitely reads like it. Originally published under the title Wildflowers in 2013, Boldwood Books took it upon themselves to republish it under this title this past June.
Frankie Valentine sort of fell into the florist business, but she’s taken it to it beautifully and has created quite the wedding business. Dealing with stressed out brides, overbearing mothers, and even a disgruntled ex-boyfriend, she’s making her business work for her. Along the way she gives up alcohol, starts training for a half marathon, and meets a mother of a terminally ill child. Doing her best to give all aspects of her life her all, she finds happiness in places she never expected.
There is so much going on in this book that it’s too much, but at the same time everything feels superficial. There is no depth to the story or any of the characters.
While I appreciate being the first this republishing was exciting for Ms. Howells, I wish she had taken the time to edit it again and flush it out to turn it into something more meaningful.

Having read and enjoyed The Vow by the same author, I was interested to see how I would like a different genre from this author. I need not have worried as I loved this! It is an emotional read dealing with some serious issues.
I connected with the story right from the start and it was a fast read.
I loved that it was based in a florist!
I look forward to reading more of this author's work ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I loved this book! Had me wanting to read on to find out what was going to happen in the end.
Most of the characters were likeable though a few had me shaking my head.
I had moments of laughing and moments of getting a bit teary eyed. Definitely a emotional read full of hope and a bit of romance thrown in.

This is a story about Frankie, who opens a flower shop. She’s just a girl trying to follow her dreams and find happiness and love among the chaos of life, and I enjoyed it very much.
It was a real journey for Frankie and a cast of likeable supporting characters and it had its moments where a tear came to my eye. Life isn’t always roses, but in sadness we can find purpose and I think that’s an underlying, powerful theme of this book.

This book was definitely a slow burner! It did take me a while to get into and there were a lot of characters introduced at the beginning which was a bit confusing, but stick with it, folks, it is worth it :)
I have to admit that I didn't particularly like the friendship that Frankie and Honey had (and Honey in particular rubbed me up the wrong way) but then the reasons for that were revealed and Honey evolved. Frankie also evolved, which was lovely to see.
Frankie is an accidental florist, she was bullied into making wedding flowers for her best friend and it kind of went from there. She has an interesting assistant who really adds a bit of much needed brevity into the book.
Honey is a high-powered lawyer who is incredibly bossy. I have had friends like this too and you have to be careful that they don't just steamroller you! She has a lovely husband, Johnny, who loves Honey despite her bossiness. Honey spends a lot of time trying to matchmake Frankie and ordering her to come to dinner and meet the latest match. This gives us a bit more lightheartedness as these matches are not fabulous, in different ways. I loved what Frankie did to Josh, in the end!!
Along the way, Frankie meets Lulubelle and her son Cosmo. Cosmo is seriously ill and Frankie ends up helping Lulubelle in all sorts of ways and spending time with them both. I won't spoil the plot here but there were some incredibly touching moments especially when Frankie went to Briarwood, a respite house for seriously ill children.
This book is all about female friendships, growing as people and what happens when people strike adversity. There is romance here as well, but it was more as a secondary thing than the main event.
I really enjoyed it. It was a gentle and yet powerful read.

I was completely moved by the book, and it's hard to put into words just how much it resonated with me. The author managed to capture the essence of the characters' lives, particularly in the face of their challenging circumstances. The emotions they experienced were so palpable, it was as if I could feel their confusion and struggles as if they were my own.
What struck me most was the theme of helping others and allowing oneself to receive help in return. The way the characters supported each other showcased the beauty of human connection. It reminded me of the times when I've extended a helping hand to others and how fulfilling that can be. Things need to change and this is the story of how Frankie pulls her life together.
It’s a story of enduring friendships, grabbing life by the you - know- whats when opportunities arise, finding who you truly are, where you belong and who you belong with.
Along the way, Frankie makes an unexpected friend in Lulubelle. With their friendship, comes heartache as Lulubelle’s son, Cosmo fights a brutal disease.
I did find this book a bit busy in places. There were a lot of characters and a lot of threads all fighting for attention. Please don’t be put off if you find yourself feeling the same. Stick with it, because the story is worth it.
There are so many lovely characters in this book, and a few who were a little less likeable.
Ultimately, #ItAllStartedWithYou comes together as a wonderful read. It’s charming, funny, magical, sweet, heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting.

This was almost a DNF for me. In the first few chapters, I found Frankie such an unlikeable protagonist that I almost gave up. She came across as superficial, flighty, and self-centered. However, I am happy that I stayed the course because subsequently, this novel was full of inspiring, heart-warming events and relationships. Part of the enjoyment was watching Frankie’s transformation. The supporting characters are relatable and provide depth and insight to this emotionally touching story about friendships and the support these women give to each other in the face of marital discord and, quite poignantly, a child with a terminal illness.
Another interesting dimension is Frankie’s business as a wedding florist. The descriptions of the flowers, the floral arrangements, and the challenges of dealing with brides and their mothers were entertaining and kept me engaged.
Overall, after a slow start, this novel turned out to be a gem of a story.

Frankie has had a series of disasters both in her personal life and in work much to the angst of her friend Honey. When Honeys wedding flowers don’t make an appearance Frankie steps up and so begins an idea which turns into reality with Honeys help of a wedding flower shop. Frankie makes changes to her life and starts running and in doing so literally runs into Lulubelle and her young son Cosmo. Small chats exchange snippets and Frankie finds out that Cosmo has leukaemia and Frankie does what she can to support Lulubelle, realising in the process what the most important things in life are.
I really enjoyed this, it's a life affirming read and how sometimes it's the smallest gesture that can change someone's day for the better if we are willing to reach out a hand. There’s drama, and a little romance and lots of smiles along the way. Of life's ups and downs and when life throws you lemons add gin! (or make lemonade). An uplifting, wonderful read I highly recommend.

Debbie Howells has the skill of writing a seemingly simple, friendly, fun plot about a group of friends; and then wrapping inside it some really thought-provoking elements to get the reader emotionally involved.
In this book we meet Frankie, the main character, who seems to be having a bit of a disaster on all fronts. She is a scatterbrain and her best friend Honey, a real force to be reckoned with, seems to be firmly ’helping’ Frankie along.
After a slow start, the story gathers pace, as Frankie begins to develop her own life plans. It’s not long before the tables turn and Frankie finds the roles reversed, being needed to support her friend. There are a few ‘Bridget Jones’ moments which may have you chuckling and squirming with embarrassment.
Watching Frankie learn the craft of floristry was both eye-opening and fascinating. I enjoyed learning about the importance of different kinds of flowers and posies, the way Frankie could create designs to suit different brides and settings. A reflection I’m sure of Debbie Howells earlier life as a florist.
There is a tough thread in the book, which deservedly raises the emotional stakes, heartbreakingly delivered with empathy.
This is a heartwarming, life affirming tale about friendships and support, new beginnings, inspiring events and seeing the difference kindness can make. As always, a great read.

I couldn’t wait to get into another Debbie Howells book. I’ve reviewed and enjoyed every one of the books I have as eARCs.
Frankie, Honey, Mrs Orange and all the other characters were very well fleshed out. The town was atmospheric and I just loved the florist’s shop. I really like flowers and there were so many in the book.
If you’re already married, the flowers and wedding planning will make you reminisce about your big day (it did me, although I planned my own wedding), If you’re going to get married, it will have you dreaming of flower arrangements and all things the big day needs.
Aside from the weddings and Frankie’s life, I found Lulibelle and Cosmo’s backstories heart wrenching.

Little by little things start happening around her that force her to open her eyes and look at others. Her friend Honey, whose marriage is in trouble. Her faithful employee who needs more respect. A new friend whose son has a deadly disease, yet still finds a way to give back.
I loved seeing Frankie mature and grow emotionally. She learned so much when she opened herself to experience life and is a better person for it. Another great book by this talented author.

This books is a fantastic read. Starts slow but I got hooked right when Frankie opened her own flower shop.
Frankie explained that her mom abandoned her and her sister right after their dad died. They grew up themselves and Frankie believe she isn't worth anyone's love, so she has been getting drunk and have one night stands with all the wrong people, letting everyone take advantage of her.
Then her best friend challenged her to a half marathon and she starts to train and from there she starts to grew up mentally with self discovery. She found a better way to relax after work, instead of drinking to oblivion, she go out for a run.
All the positive came with her self realizing, she change her actions and habits. She even forgave her mother in the abandonment, and meets the man more suited for her.

This is the second work by Debbie Howells that I am reading, and she surprised me both times. Not even once did I expect that this was about the kid.
I was in the assumption that this is a rom-com, and I was waiting for some love story to happen. I thought that the 'you' in 'it all started with you' is the love interest. But boy, the truth hit me in the end.
I really loved reading this book, and the character development is perfect, I have to say. Would recommend this book to my friends for sure.

Frankie used to be a bit of a flake. Never been able to hold on to a job for more than six months. That is until her friend Honey pretty much forces her to do the flowers for her wedding. Frankie has found her new calling.
Three years later Frankie is in her stride dealing with bridzillas and their mothers during working ours, trying to help her friends through break ups and other hard times.
Entertaining.

This is an engaging read which manages to fuse some serious subjects into the story and yet leave you with a feeling of hope and positivity. The characters are all lively, with some hilarious couples and the various families of the brides who Frankie has to contend with are all in their own way piling up the pressure on Frankie for their ultimate wedding day. Frankie undergoes something of a change as the story develops as she comes to appreciate what truly matters in life and just how 'important' the exact colour of ribbon is in the great scheme of things.
Not all the characters are likeable but they tend to get their own comeuppance. I loved the setting of the florists. The whole story has a romantic sheen because of it, offset by Mrs Orange's pithy observations on the brides and their mothers. With friends and family issues throughout, this is a packed story but well worth the read. There are some heartbreaking moments, so be warned, you may need your hankie!

This book for me started out a little slow but did pickup up. We meet Frankie who has a lot of stuff going on in her life and she’s feeling a little lost but Honey her best friend has her help out in the flower shop which changes Frankie’s life.
The author does a great job in making you feel like your standing in the flower shop which I loved. The story
has romance, Drama, friendships, and the drama of life’s ups and down and what thrown at us.

Frankie has a lot going on, however when a situation forces her to make a decision this may be just what she needs to discover herself.
Howells gives us an emotionally thought-out read, full of friendship, a journey of self-discovery, understanding and love.
I struggled in places with this novel, but this was because of the many different characters, however, once I had gotten my head around them I enjoyed them all, so don’t let that put you off and just keep going.

Frankie's life is a mess. Making a total fool of herself by over-drinking at a dinner party one time too many, she has reached rock bottom. Little by little, she begins to make changes- and new friends- and turn things around.
This is a story of redemption. Frankie's story covers struggles, misunderstandings, arguments, and learning to speak up for the things that matter to her. There were sad moments, but by the end, you'll feel proud of her decisions. A very warm fuzzy, feel good book.

It took me a while to see get into the book and there’s a lot of not so nice things happening but the book kind of traps you and forces you to continue reading.
I was not expecting the story to be so deep and so complex with childhood cancer involved but the story is good.
I enjoyed the characters and I really enjoyed growth they all went through during the story.
All in all, it’s a much deeper story than what I expected and it grew on me.

A really nice book, dealing with some really hard and heartbreaking topics. It was very fast paced and at some times did feel slightly rushed, and you didn't get enough time to connect with the characters that were sipposed to have the biggest impact but the story overall was really good. Thank you for the chance to read.

I absolutely adored this book. The plot is magnificent, I loved the florist aspect of the plot as well as the many different plot threads that Howells masterfully weaves. There is a lot of love in this but also an unbearable amount of sadness that brought tears to my eyes. Ultimately this is a book about hope and what a book it is. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advance copy.

Really enjoyed this book, it was moving and told many stories of flower meanings ,which was interesting, the effects of parenting and girl friends. It showed many different aspects of life and expectations.
