Forsythe Enchantment #2

Jungle Enchantment

Rate this book
Out in the wild

How typical of a man to base his judgment of her solely on her looks! Clearly Kip Forsythe would have preferred that she wore khaki shorts, a bush shirt and the odd python draped around her neck. Natalie would show him she was quite capable of preparing for the arrival of an entire film crew at Africa's Kabala Dam. He didn't need to know--he wouldn't know--it was all part of an attempt to mend her broken heart.

But she hadn't considered the rush of desire that threatened to consume her each time she thought of Kip. She hadn't considered she'd fall prey to his jungle enchantment!

Re Jungle Enchantment - Patricia Wilson gives us more jungle adventure in this sequel to Forbidden Enchantment - this time with Kip, the brother of the h in the first book.

Since the rebels all got sent to Siberia and the H from the first book did all the fun explosions, we have to be there for the grand opening of the now completed dam.

That means that PW has to give us little h adventures instead of sneaking past rebels and big bangs. Don't worry tho, PW puts the h into enough dicey situations that the H gets plenty of rescuing and cuddle carrying the h about time.

We start with the 24 yr old location manager and film director h, she is a vital part of her dad's small but highly professional guerrilla documentary film company and her job is to go to Africa and get things all set up for a lightening fast filming of the big new dam grand opening.

The h is having a little mopey moment tho, the hot shot commentator and set producer has dumped her for another female employee, after she and the big blob pustule had been dating for a year. In fact blob pustule went and got himself engaged to the new girl, leaving the h flat after promising he loved her, and incurring the h's father's wrath. If it weren't for the fast filming on the dam opening and the h's intervention, the h's dad would have kicked the blob pustule to the curb.

Unfortunately the h only has two weeks to get locations scouted and interviews set. She also is starting to hate flying and she is feeling rather ill. When she gets to Africa, she is met at the airport by the big blond mountain of an H. She is not enthused by his appearance, her headache is getting worse and she was really hoping the small plane pilot would be a fatherly type figure who might be interested in her headache.

The H doesn't appear to be the interested in headaches type and in fact he looks pretty disapproving of her altogether. That is just too bad really. Cause on the way to the h's hotel, we stop by the H's house to get the h some painkillers and the h faints and hits her head. Naturally she isn't going anywhere but bed and the H seems to get a kick out of carrying her there. And in helping her into her nightie.

So the h has a slight concussion and a virus. She is stuck at the H's until she recovers in a few days and the massive attraction between them is growing. There is lots of the usual PW banter, a naked in the bath h moment and a roofie kiss or two. The h continues on in her unique jungle adventures when she plucks a dead flower and ends up covered in ants.

The H yells at her a lot, she isn't safe to be let on her own, but the h blithely continues on her way. She gets her car stuck in quicksand and the H has to rescue her again. She goes to dinner with the H where she meets the evil wannabe OW too. When the wannabe OW starts to patronize her, the h records her bloviated bombasity and shows the OW the recorder, telling it is sure to be a interesting interview when the h writes it up for all the papers and the magazines.

The wannabe OW seekritly vows revenge at that pronouncement, she will just wait for the right time. In the interim, the h takes her own pictures and in a move that got this book downgraded, PW throws in a darkroom attempted six cockroach attach. The h and I both screamed and the H came running to rescue people, but I had to take a long time-out for an extended Captain consult.

( I am filing a formal petition to ban all cockroaches from HPlandia - it totally ruins the whole outing.)

Then the h's job is all complete and it is time for the rest of the crew to arrive. Sadly blob pustule made it to the plane and his really nice new fiancee and the guy who is in love with her and is also the cameraman all make it too.

Right away we get two love triangles that eventually turn into three. Blob pustule hates that the H and h are getting close and he gets cranky and mean. Blob pustule needs to watch out tho, he is irking his nice fiancee and the cameraman is ready to make his move on the Blob's very nice fiancee.

The wannabe OW makes her play too, after telling the h a lie that she and the H are lovers and that she is marrying the H soon cause his brother in law is rich. The OW pushes the h into the pool at a pre-dam opening party. That move backfires tho, cause the H rescues the h and goes off with his little black slinky green eyed feline h, leaving the OW to sit and sulk.

Then the H lures the h into his clutches by promising an interview with his brother in law about the new dam. All of the film is almost complete, we just need the opening and the previous book's H interview.

The h knows it is a bad mistake, cause the H has hinted that he only does one nighters and the h is booked on a plane to leave the next day, but the roofie H kisses overwhelm her senses and she and the H have a big purple passion lurve mojo moment. The h is in love and miserable the next day, extremely sad that the H's sister and her husband look so devoted and happy and the H doesn't feel that way about her.

Blob pustule behaves badly again and he acts like a giant slime slurper as he tries to put the moves on the h. She is fighting him off, the H walks in at just the wrong moment and the h is prepared to get very violent as she throws both of them out of her room.

She is mad because Blob pustule broke up with his nice fiancee to chase after the h again to soothe his ginourmous ego -- he just can't believe she would want anyone else and isn't wearing full veil and black in mourning for her loss of him -- and she is mad at the H too.

Cause the wanna be OW told the h that the H let on about their nocturnal co-mingling and then told the h that the OW and the H would just continue on together happily, as the h was leaving the country and she was a disposable anyway.

The h goes home to England and has a huge sulk and a virus. She moves out of her family home where she lived with her dad and she quits her job too. She is going to write books now, using her pictures and notes from all the locations she has gone to.

Her dad thinks her virus is really a pregnancy, (it isn't,) and he likes to yell at people a lot, so he yells at Blob pustule and Blob pustule leaves for the HPlandia mists. The h is sad and missing the H horribly, she tries to distract herself so maybe she can recover from her heartbreak sooner.

It doesn't work, but then it doesn't matter - the H shows up to once again cuddle carry the h. He loved her since he met her and she is the only one for him, but he goes to some dangerous places and he had to check out his new project to make sure it was safe to take the h there. Especially as she has a particular talent for getting into dicey situations and tho he doesn't plan to be far away, he can't always chain her to him and may not be quick enough to rescue her -she is faster that greased lightening at getting into a jam.

The h is all smiles and delighted cooings that she loves and adores the H back. She will take up all his baggage allowance and he can just take an extra shirt or two, after they get married and go to the H's work locations for a big, happy purple pink tinged PW HEA HP outing.

This is a classic PW plotted book and it is absolutely adorable. Except for the cockroaches - that was pretty horrible and worse than rebels in my opinion - I think this H had a little fail on that one, cause the H in the first book would have just blown them all up and I would entirely approve of that.

But cockroaches aside, this one was fun and a good day's jaunt in HPlandia.

I always enjoy Patricia Wilson's caring alphas and this hero is one of her best. Set in Africa, the heroine, who has just been jilted, arrives from England to produce a documentary on the dam the hero has built. But first she is stricken by a virus and the hero nurses her back to health. Heroine hates how vulnerable he makes her feel, so she goes out of her way to show her competence at work. Once the rest of the film crew shows up, sparks begin to fly.

Besides all the angst and silly jealousy, there was some clever banter. I even enjoyed the minor characters.

‘Jungle’ is sequel to ‘Forbidden’ because of course we all desperately wanted to know what happened with Madembi’s dam, and if the unseen rebel leader relaunched his attack on the stable and functional government. Four years on, everything’s great! The government is going to make so much power with their dam that they’ll be able to export it to other countries. Hooray for the ... Madembians, maybe? Wilson just calls everyone who isn’t foreign to Madembi ‘African.’

Natalie shows up in Madembi to make a documentary about the dam. Her father owns a tv production company, and Natalie does the set up work before the crew arrive and shoot footage and interview people, and she’s good at her job.

She’s met at the airport by Kip, and neither of them are particularly happy about it. Natalie is nursing some heartbreak, because the louse who works with her and dated her for 12 months and told her he loved her went and proposed to another girl at the production company, and Natalie’s trying to be brave about it. And, she’s started to fear and hate flying and she’s sick, and Kip’s giving her this look that she correctly identifies as ‘you are an annoying and useless creature and I resent that I will have to do things for you.’ She doesn’t like that at all, how dare he? She’ll conceal her fears and her illness u til such time as she can dramatically faint and cause further injury.

Wilson really likes a sick and vulnerable heroine for a hero to care for, and a cold in Wilson’s universe is treated as dangerous and requiring great and serious care. It’s such a turn on.

Kip is lovely, his crankiness when he realises Natalie’s his ‘One’ is pretty mild, and it was so nice to have an emotional adult. While he makes something of Natalie being bossy he doesn’t neg her about being ‘unfeminine’ so he gets a lot of points for admiring her strength. I liked them both although probably Natalie could have done a bit more research into the country before she went around sticking her hands all over everything. I found them both sympathetic and enjoyable.

And we do meet Andrea and Kane from ‘Forbidden’ again, and since no mention is made of Andrea giving up her career I choose to believe she’s kept it to exactly the extent she wants, and that Kane is somehow a supportive and involved father who takes an equal share in caring for their progeny.

This is the second book in this 2 book series, and right away I preferred the first one to this.

The two main characters are Kip the brother of the heroine from the first book, and Natalie who’s father owns the film company that is going to be making a film of the opening of the dam somewhere in Africa, Natalie is sent ahead to see the dam and surrounding area to make plans for when the rest of the team arrive, amongst them are her ex boyfriend who’s now engaged to another female member of staff after he dumped her, what irritated me is how benevolent she is towards him and his new fiancée, totally unrealistic IMO. Of course the minute she lands and meets Kip the hero it’s obvious where this is going.

I have a few issues with this story, the author leads us to believe that Natalie is one tough cookie who can look after herself no matter what. Okay I was willing to go with that had Natalie not turned out to be the complete opposite. The minute she arrives she faints and is ill, she’s now decided that she’s terrified of flying, she trots about Africa and gets into some dangerous situations and has to be rescued constantly. She allows everyone else to blame her for their problems. She was a walking disaster. As for Kip he maintains he’s attracted to her, at one point he tells her he wants to make love to her, yet he’s constantly got another woman hanging on his arm, and he didn’t seem to mind that all, at one point he’s in Natalie’s hotel room kissing her, while he’s got the OW waiting in the bar so he can escort her home, seriously! I found this story overall to be quite irritating.

"Jungle Enchantment" is the story of Kip and Natalie.
When journalist photographer Natalie finds herself heartbroken, she decides to get away for a work assignment to Africa's Kabala Dam- but ends up meeting Kip Forsythe there, and instant attraction blooms!
Kip is the brother to Andrea whom we met in the previous book, who has a shrewd outlook on life..all until Natalie invades his life and he finds himself getting obsessive and possessive all at once.
All PW tropes about a crazy hero, innocent heroine, near death experiences, OW/OM drama, heated lovemaking, small separation with a happy ending happen here too, and make it an interesting read.

What a stinker. I know I shouldn't expect much from Harlequin Presents anyway, but I've read so many better ones published by them. the characters fought bitterly up to the end, always with a hint/threat of violence from the male, and CONSTANT obsession with how frail and helpless the woman really was, even though she was an accomplished career woman, and how big and strong the male was. there was no reason to believe the two loved each other--they lusted, and fought, and that's it. I almost didn't finish it, which is rare for me. I do not recommend it.

I really liked this one. Parts of it were almost cinematic with lovely local colour. It had a distinctly 70s vibe. The h, Natalie, was a career woman working in her father's small production company. She'd recently been passed over by one of the production team, Neil, in favour of another, Paula (a nice person) so was nursing a broken heart when she set off as the advance researcher for a documentary about a new dam in Kenya (I think it's Kenya.) She's met at the airport by our H, Kip. He is fair, tall and I fell for him v quickly (😁). She immediately succumbs to a virus necessitating some clothes removal and nursing. He starts off grumpy but falls for her like a ton of bricks. The chemistry between these two is hot.
There's a horrible OW sticking her oar in and when the production team turns up there's a lot of rivalry, jockeying for each others partners etc.
H and h have tremendous night of passion but jealousy rears its ugly head and with the H's ow and the h's ex both getting involved they part. There is much suffering before the hea. The H is old school grade A stuff, domineering and passionate without violent explosions. A lovely story and possible reread.

Natalie was hurting from Neil's desertion and engagement to another girl. Therefore, when her new assignment took her to Africa, to see and capture Kabbala Dam for her father's TV crew, she was glad for the chance! However, meeting Kip Forsythe changed everything. Not only he doubted her professionalism and capabilities, but was also playing havoc with her temper and emotions by treating her as a delicate butterfly!

It is an okay read, and MAYBE I would have liked it more if I read it BEFORE reading Forbidden Enchantment by the same writer, because I kept comparing the two stories while reading this one. I felt differently about Forbidden Enchantment and I very much prefer it to this one. Natalie and Kip as main characters just did not impress me much nor the events.

The H fell for the h the moment he first saw her - lust at first but love followed soon after. Like wise for the h but she took way longer to admit it to herself even. The H lets the h know pretty early on that he is insanely attracted to her, and repeats it multiple times, very seriously, throughout the book. I feel like he should have groveled more in the end and come after her sooner but meh I'll let it go. Nice angst, well fleshed out minor characters particularly the h's dad and her friend Ray. HEA.

Better than the first one, although again we have the heroine getting thin from love - she is a butterfly (vomit) and he is big manly - man. I am tempted to read another Patricia Wilson to see if all her heroines have to be thin, and fragile, and dying for love... but not sure I could cope with another drippy heroine. Kip was kind of hunky, so 3 stars for him.

I was really bored in the first half, but it got better when the heroine's ex came along. The constant yo-yoing of fights, suspicions and violent acts of passion and simpering longings got awesome, which is to say, it was quite, quite terrible.

EDIT July 30, 2012: I actually read this again without realising I had already read it. And in actual fact, I enjoyed it. How bizarre. The heroine and hero are still annoying, but somehow more tolerable.
