What’s it about?
In this fantasy novel, we meet Linus, a forty-something caseworker in the Department in charge of Magical Youth. Despite being terribly lonely, Linus puts his best efforts into being a caseworker for these children. When he is assigned to travel to a distant island for a month to determine if the six magical children there are being given adequate care, he is determined to remain his usual impartial self. But is that possible?
What did it make me think about?
Love in all forms.
Should I read it?
The author uses magical beings to make a point about marginalized groups. He even throws in a little Kant to make his point. (I had to look up Kant’s categorical imperative- but it certainly is what the novel is about.) AI states that “Kant’s categorical imperative is a universal moral principle that states that people should act in ways that respect the humanity of others”. This story is all about learning to accept people as they are- differences and all. I think this novel would appeal to most people- whether they are Fantasy fans or not. It is a hopeful, sweet story with very strong character development. It is the beginning of a series and I myself will be reading the next book to see what happens to Linus and the rest.

“Hate is loud, but I think you’ll learn it’s because it’s only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard.”
