Wolves of Flathead #1

The Alpha's Ardor

Rate this book
Declan Adair and his twin brother Lachlan are wolf shifters with no home or pack and a dark past that makes them hated by other weres. Hunted and forced to separate, Declan finds himself chased north and straight into Flathead, a large sprawling territory that is home to a single massive pack. Unsure and more afraid than he wants to admit, Declan’s situation is only made worse by his undeniable attraction to the Flathead pack’s alpha, Law.Law is everything an alpha should powerful, controlled, and surprisingly enough to Declan—kind. And when Law seems to want Declan just as much as Declan wants Law, it’s unbelievable. With a past full of hurt and the knowledge that the only one he can trust is his twin, Declan is torn between the way he knows the world works and the possibility that the alpha’s ardor might just be real.

If you have ever wondered what it's like to be despised and even hunted and killed for something your family was forced into doing, then reading this story will give you a good idea. Declan and his twin brother are totally on their own, always in danger and on the run, and cannot trust anyone. They've managed to stay safe, but even when they're finally offered sanctuary they don’t dare to believe it's true. Their ability to trust is completely gone, and it takes a lot to get it back. I found their situation and emotions that go with it utterly heartbreaking, and was glued to the pages to find out how it would all end.

Declan is on the run, which is, unfortunately, pretty much the content of his life. Except this time he gets caught, by a very powerful alpha no less, and he thinks it's all over. Curious to find out what the alpha will do, and unable to escape, he bides his time. He overlooks all the little signs of Law's true intentions that I easily picked up, but it's clear that he refuses to see them – for his own protection. When it finally does dawn on him that Law is serious, he still has no idea what to do – but hope is back in his life.

Law is the perfect alpha: strong, compassionate, and understanding. He treats Declan the way he deserves to be treated, and it takes him a while to figure out why Declan doesn't seem to get it. His patience seems endless, and I loved him for his determination and kindness. He wants Declan desperately, yet he moves slowly enough for Declan not to get even more scared than he already is. His feelings, his ardor, for Declan are deep and I was impressed with the way he controls himself.

If you like wolf shifter stories with deep, dark, and mysterious secrets hovering over everyone and promising a great overarching story for a new series, if you enjoy reading about powerful men who treat people right, and if you're looking for a hot, sweet read with lots of emotional entanglements and some very hot between the sheets action, then you will probably like this novella. I definitely look forward to the next volume!

Finally, finally a mate-mine-growl-alpha-wolfy-book and not a stupid annoying alpha in sight.
*sigh*
I have had a bad run with my shifter books lately, either asshat alpha types or lots of tears and crying or just plain annoying plots being regurgitated time and time again.
Here there is an interesting ( if, as of yet underdeveloped) plot behind Declan and Lachlan's need to be on the run and trust no one.
They had to separate to escape this newest threat and Declan lands in one of the strongest and most powerful wolf territories and right in front of the alpha too.
This will either go well or very very poorly for him.
Guess what? It went well. ( surprise! )
I loved Law, he's such a sweet, sappy romantic Alpha, giving Declan time ( and a little more than one explanation, since Declan didn't quite get it the first few times).
I liked that it wasn't this immediate 'mate-mine-sex-now' within minutes of meeting, no not at all.
So, I liked it as a quick, interesting and steamy shifter book and I really want to read the next one..like now!!
When is it going to be out? When?

I was pretty tired last night and didn't want to start anything long, so I grabbed this shorter book and was enjoying it, but, get this, fell asleep during the climatic finale sex scene! Literally woke up at about 3AM with my iPad on my chest. Whoops! I guess it just wasn't engrossing enough to keep me awake. But I read the end this morning and it was good and ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and I will be reading the second book.

Recommended for fans M/M of werewolf shifters. I hope we don't have to wait too long for book 2!

An enjoyable read. The author took her time in developing the MC's relationship and did not have a hurried mating as in the case of most shifter stories. When the couple came together at last, the scene was very sweet and passionate. I wished the story was longer and had more action. Can't wait for Lachlan's story!

The story starts with Declan. He is running into the woods. He is trying to escape from the Beta that is chasing him. Few days before he had been attacked by a bear to protect his twin brother, Lachlan, and they had tried to ask for help to a nearby pack. They never asked for help, they always stayed alone, they couldnt risk to reveal their true identities. But Declan's wound was bad. When the other pack had found out who they were, they had been banished from their land and chased. Declan has been running for days and is tired, he knows that he is entering another pack's territory, but that is his only option. He smells the scent of an Alpha, and he knows that if the beta doesnt kill him, the other wolf will. To his surprise the Alpha attacks the Beta and forces him to retreat. He and the Alpha are alone now and Declan tries to act submissive, also if after so many years alone with his brother and no pack,he finds it difficult. The Alpha asks him why he was being chased, and Declan at start doesnt want to tell him the full truth, he fears that the man will kill him when he finds out who he is. The Alpha understands that Declan is lying to him and gets angry, when he puts a clawed hand around his troat, Declan snarls and the Alpha tells him that he knew he wasnt really submissive like he had tried to make him believe. Law, asks him again to answer his questions and Declan this time needs to reply, the Alpha is too angry to challenge with another lie. Declan tells him to ask him his name and when the Alpha does and finds out that Declan is one of the famous wolves that hunted other wolves, he replies that he should kill him. Declan tells him that all, think to know what he did and believe what they heard, and Law can see the pain on the younger wolf's face. To Declan surpriese the Alpha hugs him and asks him to follow him. They will go home and he will be feed and healed.Declan cant belive these words, but he can do just one thing, follow.

Since the first time they meet, we can see how Law isnt the usual horny, asshole, commanding Alpha. Yes he wants to be respected, but he is not willing to take something that isnt offered to him. He is a good man and really wants to help Declan.

When they are back home, Law explains to his brother and beta, Trace, who Declan is and when the younger man jokes about liking Declan body, we see Law's jealousy and we understand that his brother found out his little secret. Declan is Law's mate. They dont say it with words, but from their little discussion this is clear.

At the same time Declan is eating and thinking about his twin, hoping that he is safe. His claws are out and he is clenching his fist, making his hand bleed. Law goes to him and asks if all is ok. Declan confesses him that he misses his brother and to his surprise Law tells him to call Lachlan. Declan replies that he is not used to being treated this way and tells him about what happened in the past, of how some Alphas had tried to take he and his brother and use them, but that they had been always faster than them. Law is angry he says that those wolves cant be called Alphas, that they are a shame and that he would never take something not given to him willingly. Declan wants to believe him, Law seems different from the others but he still cant trust him, is to soon.

Later that night (or the day after, i forgot) Declan is finally able to call his brother and tells him that he is ok. They speak using a code, and Lach makes his brother understand that he is near and that if he needs him he will come running. In the next days, we see Trace bickering with Declan, and from their interactions we understand that they are starting to become friends. Law always obeserves them and sometime laughs, others he snarls letting his brother understand that the joke went to far. Declan is starting to think that maybe the alpha, with these gestures and his protectiveness is courting him, but in the end he is sure that is only his imagination. This doesnt stop him from wishing to be sharing a bed with the Alpha. He is feeling for the strong wolf something he never felt in his life.

Days pass and one moring Law tells him they need to talk. Declan is sure that the alpha wants to get rid of him, but the older man offers to him and his brother a place in his pack. Declan tells him all about his life, of how his parents and grandparents had lived in captivity and how he and his brother had been born like that, without knowing anything else, till one day they too had received the tattoo with their identification number and their mother had cried. She had told their father they needed to leave. They had escaped, but not her. For years they were alone with their father, they couldnt ask for help, bcs they were considered traitors, also if they were only slaves of the hunters. They used to help them find other wolves and those poor guys had died protecting their pack members, their families. One day when they were 19 their father had been killed by a puma and after that for 7 year he and his twin had been alone. Until this day.

When Law asks him why he told him his story, Declan replies that he deserved to know bcs he offered them a place in the pack, and that now he needs to talk with his borther and tell him about this offer.

Lach asks him why the alpha is making this offer and if he thinks Law is like the other alphas that had wanted to have them. Declan tells him that Law isnt like that, that he is sure the wolf is courting him and cares about him. From his words Lach understands that his brother is falling in love with the alpha. He too wants to believe in the man, but he still wants to be sure before he goes in the pack's territory.

Later that day Declan decides to go for a run and when he comes back Law is w8 for him. Declan is still in his wolf form and playfully asks the alpha to chase him. Law smiles and changes in his wolf form. They run for minutes, till they reach the spot where they first met. Law tracks Declan on the floor and scents him. Their faces are near and the older wolf kisses him. For some seconds Declan stays still, and the alpha starts to pull away, but then Declan puts his arms around the other wolf and kisses him back.

This scene was really sweet, we see how Declan is scared of trusting , but at the same time his feelings are too strong to be ignored. Law is a gentleman, and every little gesture from Declan makes him happy. He has a good heart, something I'm sure is true also for his brother Trace. Sadly Declan ruins this moment with his words.
He asks Law if this will be enough to make them stay in the pack, and Law gets angry, he doesnt want Declan to be with him bcs he thinks he needs to. Declan replies that he thought he needed to, but that he also wanted to. Law calms himself and tells him that he doesnt need to do anything, that he wants both of them to be safe and in his pack. Law then adds that he too is interested in him, that he wants to make Declan his, but not like that. Declan needs to be the one to go to him, and after that he will be his and he doesnt share. Then he gets up and leaves him.

Declan speaks again with his brother and Lach suggests him that maybe he should really start to trust his feelings. Declan is walking in the town when he smells a strange scent. Is a fox. We find out that Law is used to taking "strays" into his pack, and that Quinn the fox, had been saved almost 2 years before by one of his beta,Colby, and that since that day the man had become their librarian. This says a lot about the ppl in the pack, since foxes dont usually like wolves and prefer to be alone. Law's ppl seem to be nice and also if his pack is one of the strongest and bigger in America, he isnt a bossy jerk that only thinks about power or breeding. Sure not all of his ppl are perfect, but not all can be the same.

I really want to read about Quinn and Colby, I'm pretty sure that there is something btw them or there was, and I WANT TO KNOW IT!

While Declan is walking, he meets Law. The Alpha shows him the city and they end up eating where Trace works.
In the next days they talk a lot about anything. Law tells him that his parents died when he was young that at start he didnt want to be the next Alpha and that he had run away from his duties. Trace had found him and they had fought. In the end Law had accepted his new role, and Trace had become is first in commmand.

Few weeks later, when Declan and Lach are on the phone, his twin brother confesses him that some hunters are following him. The 2 brothers argue and in the end Trace takes the phone and demands Lach to tell him where he is and tells him what he needs to do. At start Lach asks who is on the phone and where is Declan, but the beta doesnt want to hear his stupid questions and tells him to do what he said. Declan takes the phone back and in the end they are able to convince Lach.

100% sure the next couple is Trace and Lach XD .They may be identical twins, but Lach is sassy and more stubborn. When Trace asks Declan how is his twin and the other answers him,Trace seems more excited and not discouraged.

Trace then leaves and Declan asks Law why his brother is so interested in his twin. Law replies that he will find out soon, but that his brother will have to fight for the position of the best couple, since is a rare thing that the alpha takes a mate. Declan is shocked by the words. Law wants him as his mate, as his family and Declan wants the same.

They kiss, and the alpha bares his troat to him. Declan cant believe that one of the strongest alphas is submitting to him.

They finally make love and Law claims him and marks him with a bite, he then tells Declan that he wants the little wolf to do the same.

We dont know anything about Law and his little wolf (so he calls Declan) previous experiences, what they did or didnt, but i dont care , i dont wanna know, i will believe what I want!!!!!

The only thing I'm sure of, is that Lach will be feisty and that I will like him and Trace together.

This is the first in a new series and I thought it was a great beginning. Declan and Lachlan have a terrible past, one that was not their fault. It continues to haunt them, however, and they have no where they can really feel safe. When they are forced to separate when chased by persistent betas, Declan ends up in Flathead, home to a giant pack led by the alpha, Law, and his beta (and brother) Trace.

Law is a bad ass alpha that doesn’t need to throw his power around. This was a nice touch, and he is a fair, honest seeming man. When he realizes how much Declan, and by extension Lachlan, have been through he is enraged at the ones who would do this. Alpha’s who want a “bonus” for allowing them to be in the pack make him see red. When Declan makes his offer, Law is so hurt. You can see both sides, of course Law is hurt but of course Declan would want to be sure of him. This was a nice touch.

While Declan and Law are mates, there isn’t the immediate “yes yes lets hop into bed” and that was appreciated. Declan got to be, in his words, “courted”. Lovely and made Law all the better. There is a big backstory with the Adair family and the background is given well enough that we know generally what happened but leaves it open for more specifics (please!) in the future. Declan and Lachlan do not immediately trust anyone and this seemed to be right in character.

There is a knotting warning but the scene is very short and not detailed at all. The story is the beginning of this series so (hopefully!) Lachlan’s story is up next. This is a great start to a new series.

Nice start to a new shifter world series. I wish this being the first book it would have been longer, but it set up the characters and hopefully we will get to see more of Law and Declan in the next book. It was a nice change that the author didn't have them jumping in bed at the onset of the book and let things develop as much as it could with such a short book. I think it will be interesting once Lachlin in brought into the story and how the whole dynamic with Law, Declan, Lachlin and Trace plays out.

Nice little story. Instant attraction but not really instant love and not instant sex. It was nice to see the author take time to develop the relationship instead of just jumping into the mating/sex. Not a whole lot of action, but still very enjoyable, though (as always) I would have been happy with a lot longer story. I really liked the characters, so looking forward to seeing more of them in the next book.

This was so short! I had no idea it was so short when I started reading and suddenly I was 50% done...
Such a great little story! loved all the characters and Lachlan even if he wasn't there physically I felt he was a huge part of it all, just really enjoyed reading it.
Law is one hot and passionate Alpha, just what Declan needed.
Kudos!

A quick read. Nice characters but I didn't care for the single POV. The writing was well done, no mistakes that I noticed. The ending felt unfinished, waiting for something more that didn't come.

Too short of a story -- not even novella length -- to be of any value as a romance. Plot kinda just breezed by and I had no time to see anything development between the characters. It could of gotten away with being an erotica at that short length but there was hardly any sex to sell it as such. Altogether pointless waste of too much money. I was super bummed, because I thought the writer had some maturity in her writing that could have earned my appreciation at a longer length.

Series Review: Wolves of Flathead by by Rebecca Brochu

The Wolves of Flathead is a very romantic shape shifter story that focuses on twin weres Declan and Lachlan Adair. They had been on the run for a long time, after both parents decided they must be saved from the evils of the hunter clan that kept them as hunting dogs. Although both parents were killed in the process of escape, the twins were fast and had enough strength to get out and survive. And survive they did, in the wilderness and from being hunted by their own kind. Their family name is synonymous to traitors of their own kind.

The first book opens with Declan running for his life. He was being tracked and hunted by a beta wolf and even if he was faster, having been severely wounded by a bear left him weak and unable to heal as he should. At the risk of either getting caught and killed by the beta hunter or crossing uninvited into another wolf territory and most likely be killed for trespassing, he chose the latter.

Law is a powerful alpha and when he spots the trespasser his instinct was to protect his lands but the sight of the young and injured beta stopped him in his tracks. His scent marked him as his mate. In a move that surprised him and Declan, Law fights off the hunter beta and takes the young were into his home. And into his heart.

The second book happens a year after, when Declan's twin, Lachlan, had been living as part of the pack within the community and in the home of the alpha, his mate and the top beta, Trace, who is also the younger brother of Law. Trace had first found interest in Lachlan's voice when he first heard it on the phone while talking with his twin. His wolf perked interest and soon Trace found himself looking forward to and eavesdropping every single time a phone call was made. He was elated when Lachlan finally joined their pack and meant to take it slow and easy before courting the young were openly. But he was too slow and taking too long. At the threat of other betas taking interest, he knew he had to do something soon to make Lachlan his mate once and for all. His plan would either result in his mating or losing the man he knew as his.

These two books are a very romantic read. Although there are none of the usual action packed scenes where alpha fights another etcetera and deaths, blood, guts and gore flying through the pages, this was still so very interesting. Yes, I agree, it reads like a romance novel and the spice is the were thing but it is romantic and it does end with an HEA for both sets of brothers.

This is the perfect holiday or weekend read. There is not too much drama, not too much angst and just a whole lot of loving without crossing the porn erotica. The story of Declan and Law is, for me, the most romantic of the read but Lachlan's and Trace's story is just as romantic. Not cheesy in any way, neither is one of these sappy. Just plain, old romance to make the me smile and feel moony at the end.

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

Declan and his twin Lachlan are wolf shifters on the run, from other shifters and from human hunters managing to stay one step ahead of both groups until the day they are separated and Declan runs on to Flathead land. Flathead alpha, Law, is intrigued by the sexy shifter that is chased onto his land, he offers sanctuary for the persecuted shifter, but trust is hard for Declan and he wonders what payment is expected of him. Their attraction to each other blurs the lines and Declan doesn’t know what to do and there is no way he will lead his brother to danger.

This is quite a good shifter story where alphas control their land with an iron fist and a young shifter is persecuted for something he had no control over. Declan and his brother Lachlan have not had a peaceful life so when Declan stumbles across an alpha who seems to sympathise, he doesn’t know if he can really trust him, and his attraction to Law distracts him, but he won’t chance his brothers safety in case it is a trap. Law is attracted to the young shifter who is chased onto his land, he understands that Declan had no control over what happened when he was younger and would like nothing better than to have Declan and his brother settle down in his pack.

I really liked how this story was written with Declan being suspicious and expecting the worst, the way that Law is patient and gentle with Declan and the way that they both take their time getting to know each other before they commit to a relationship. The story is quite simple, two brothers all alone in the world persecuted for something they had no control over and now unwilling to trust and an alpha who desperately wants that trust. The story is well written and the characters are good, we seem to be getting the basics in ready for the next book as well for Trace (Law’s brother and beta) and Lachlan. I do wish that there had been more detailed background of Declan and Lachlan’s time in captivity rather than the broad overview we got, I would have also liked to discover more about Law and the type of man he is, rather than just Declan’s view of him, we know that he was nice to Declan and that people seemed to respect him but that was really it.

I will recommend this to those who love paranormal, shifters, some sweet hot sex, an interesting storyline and a happy ending that paves the way for the next story.

Declan and his twin, Lachlan, were born in captivity and used against their own kind by the hunters of werewolves. The Alpha’s Ardor by Rebecca Brochu begins with Declan running for his life, and barely escaping, when a pack he hoped to join found out who he really is. He crosses into another pack territory and is saved by the pack alpha, Law. Law recognized immediately that Declan is his mate. Declan, because of past treatment from other packs, is leery of believing he may have finally found a safe place, a home, for himself and his twin, and love.
Once Declan realizes this pack will accept him, regardless of his past sins, he starts to accept that maybe he no longer needs to run. Then, he and Law give in to their attraction and Declan proposes that the sex will suffice as payment enough for acceptance of both him and Lachlan. Law is hurt, disappointed, and angry that any pack would demand sexual payment for safety. He leaves Declan alone to decide what he wants and what he believes about Law and his pack
I love m/m shifter novels that involve knotting. I wish Brochu had written a longer, more in-depth knotting scene; it seemed a little rushed and I was looking forward to a hot, knotting sex scene! With that being said, I really enjoyed Declan and Law’s story and hope it continues throughout any other books Brochu writes in the series.
This was a great beginning to the series as it was made quite obvious that Lachlan may have met his match in Law’s Beta, and brother, Trace. Where Declan is calmer and more methodical, Lachlan is the complete opposite and should be a good counterpoint to Trace.
Needless to say, I eagerly await the next installment of the series if only to reunite the twins and watch the sparks fly between Trace and Lachlan.

This was really, really good. Much better than I was expecting it to be. Not only did this story have some plot, with well-thought out and explained pasts, good characters and a realistic development to the relationships, the sex at the end was definitely hot.

It's a fairly quick read and totally worth it. I love how Law and Declan are instantly attracted to each other and slowly open up to each other, Law offering Declan something he's never truly had before - safety and security - and Declan slowly taking the chance to follow his heart and trust Law and finally finding true happiness.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Trace tries to woo Lachlan and be further introduced to both the characters in the sequel The Beta's Beloved. Even more than that, I would love it if the author decided to make a third story involving the fox Quinn who is briefly shown and what I assume to be his burgeoning relationship with Colby who is only discussed rather than introduced.

4.25 stars/Grade: A-

It takes a lot to surprise me these days, but The Alpha's Ardor was a pleasant surprise. What a lovely treat for this shifter fanatic! Ms. Brochu's take on the werewolf trope is refreshingly new and intriguing. Declan and Lachlan's backstory was different and compelling and completely integral to the plot.

Declan's love interest, Law wasn't your typical gruff, controlling Alpha, but instead caring and sweet to confused and afraid Declan. The hurt-comfort scenes were wonderful between these two characters. I was engaged from beginning to end in their love story. Add in some interesting secondary characters like Declan's twin brother, Lachlan and you have the start of a great series.

This author is definitely one to watch! Really worth your time to pick this book up.

I actually enjoyed this book quite a bit, especially with how short it was.

I liked how the mating was a little different than standard shifter books, where they scent each other and fall instantly into mating lust. While there was attraction right away, there was no insta-bond. Gave the book a little more of a reality feel, in my opinion.

My only real complaints with this book: the length (I would have LOVED it if it was at least doubled), and a few editing mistakes (the biggest thing I noticed were several missed commas, no big deal).

The story is left open for at least one more book, possibly two with the characters that were introduced. I'm looking forward to more, hopefully longer books, and would be nice if we could meet more of the pack!

Short story M/M wolf shifter romance about twin brothers on the run because of their family's past crimes where they finally find a home.
Sweet romance with a little M/M loving. We find Declan Adair and his future home in Montana with a hot Alpha guy, Law. We hear conversations with the careful twin brother, Lachlan with obvious hints that there is romance in store with him and Trace (Law's Beta and younger brother).
Too quick to have too many thoughts except that this should have been longer with some character development of the towns people, like the Fox shifter would have been great.

2 stars for a good start, but too short a story to get more stars

This one of the type of books I really enjoy, the strong but gentle alpha who rescues the man who becomes his mate. The on-the-run Declan has an interesting backstory that is a mystery which is revealed a bit at a time through the book. Declan has learned not to trust anyone but his twin, but now they are separated and Declan is falling for an alpha he's not sure of. Should he run or should he stay? The romance here is hot but tender. Declan is damaged and skittish, his alpha must win him over like a skittish wild animal. I loved the evolution of their romance. I look forward to seeing his twin Lachlan and Trey's romance, hinted at here.

I especially liked the scenes were Law teased Declan with his words (great dirty talking!) and the way he made Declan seek him out to complete their bond. The paranormal world that this story was set in was well-fleshed out without boring the reader with too many descriptive paragraphs
and I was distinctly sad to reach the end of their story and finish the book. I look forward to reading more in this series.

This is a terrifically written touching warm love story. The characters of Law and Declan are destine mates. Law the alpha knows as soon as he smells Declan. I wish there would have been more of a character development for Law. We learned a lot about the twins Declan and Lachlan but not to much about the pack they are joining. I thought this was a great way for the Wolves of Flathead to begin. I'm hoping that the author is going to release the next book in this enchanting series soon. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!

Very enjoyable beginning to the series. Declan and Lachlan are both interesting and I hope the author goes into more about their past in future books. The dynamic between Declan and Law was a much appreciated change of pace, yes they were instantly attracted to each other but they weren't instantly in-love and all over each other. The slow build-up gave the book a little more of a realistic feel to it; especially given Declan and Lachlan's past.

A short, sweet book with very nice take on the insta-mate theme, I found this to be a very well written story that was much more natural and believable than most werewolf mating tales. For such a short piece, the protagonist's backstory was particularly interesting and innovative compared to many others in this genre. The characters were interesting and likable, although the brevity made me want more.
