I reach up to remove his mask, but he stops me by taking my hand and placing a kiss on the back of it. The silent gesture tells me that he doesn’t want to take it off. I don't question him, and he just holds my hand in his as we walk in silence back through the campus grounds. Before I even know it, we’re standing right outside my building.
He places a soft kiss on my forehead while caressing his fingers up my arms, and I see a slight smile forming over his lips.
“Thanks for the dance,” he whispers, while stepping back a few paces before finally turning himself around. I watch as he walks briskly towards the large iron gates, away from me, and out into the night.
“I’m afraid that if you leave now, then … I’m scared you won’t let me in, and you’ll push me away.” I whisper as I slowly bring my hands up and around his neck. He takes a deep breath, while moving his hands onto my hips and squeezing me gently.
“And I’m scared,” he says in a hoarse whisper, “I’m scared of what and how I’ll feel, if I let you in.”
