A summer romance with the football hero she's always loved . . . but what happens when the summer fades?
From RITA & Christy award-winning novelist Susan May Warren comes the prequel novella to her best-selling Christiansen family series.
About the book . . . Just because handsome, small town football hero John Christiansen is in love with her big sister doesn't meant he isn't meant to marry Ingrid. At least that's the hope Ingrid is clinging to as the annual Deep Haven fisherman's picnic street dance arrives. Ingrid knows that eventually her sister will break his heart--and she'll be there to pick up the pieces.
John has no interest in the kid sister of one of the cutest annual tourists--and this year, he has big plans to impress, and woo, the girl he's thought about all year.
Except, life doesn't quite turn out as planned, and thus begins an odyssey of seven summers of unexpected summer romance. But what happens when the summer fades? Just how long should someone wait for the perfect love?
I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.
I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.
Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.
Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.
Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.
Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.
I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

The Christiansen Family series is one of my favorite contemporary romance series! Each book focuses on one of the siblings, but this prequel novella tells us the story of how their parents met, fell in love, and overcame struggles. I loved getting to know Ingrid especially and it made the letters she writes to her children in the beginnings of the full-length novels so much more meaningful.
This is the story of how the parents of the Christiansen Family series, met and got together. John's family owns a lake retreat, Evergreen Resort, where Ingrid's family returns for a week each summer and has stayed in the same cabin, #12, for twenty years. Ingrid had a crush on John from the time she was thirteen but he just thought of her as Kari's little sister. Their story is long and funny at times as Ingrid does what she can to get John's attention every summer. I applauded Ingrid's standards and tenacity. She loves John's small hometown of Deep Haven but John wants to leave and play football. Susie May sure knows how to create a hunky protagonist. It was a trip down memory lane for me as all of those old songs were played at the annual street dance. This is a fun, sweet and satisfying read with a thread of faith running through it.
"I Really Do Miss Your Smile" is a beautiful introduction to the Christiansen Family series. It's a novella about how John Christiansen and Ingrid Young met each other, and how their relationship formed. Each chapter represented a new year, during the summertime at the Evergreen Lake Resort. Deep Haven is such a relaxing town. I enjoyed reading about John and Ingrid's parents as well. The character development was excellent. Also, I love when authors include the name of the title within the plot of stories. Susan May Warren does this often. This was a sweet story about family, forgiveness, friendship, love and finding one's way back home. It tugged at my heartstrings.
This one really got to me for some reason. I completely understood the "crush" that Ingrid had on John and how each year seeing him was something she looked forward to. This was a great beginning to the Christiansen family series!
Rating: PG (some teenage peer pressure, romantic contact) Language: no profanity or use of deity in a negative way Recommend: Yes
I REALLY DO MISS YOUR SMILE was an an emotional, heartbreaking, and beautiful story. It's amazing how this author could dive so deeply into these characters and their lives in so few pages. We get to ride along as they experience the street dance in Deep Haven each summer and how their friendship and love develop. One of the best, sweetest, most heartfelt romance I've read. I loved it from beginning to end! If you haven't read this series and enjoy inspirational romance or even just heartfelt romance, this is a great place to start!
Content: Some innuendo, but clean. Source: Received a complimentary copy through the author's/publisher's promotion.
This was a well written, emotion-filled novella. The story was complete and drew me in from the start. A beautiful prequel to the Christiansen family series. I enjoyed seeing the characters grew as the writer took us through year after year (each chapter representing a year). It felt real and raw and Susan May Warren is fast becoming a favourite contemporary writer.
Yes, I'm reviewing this novella separately even though it was included in the back of the second book in this series. :)
Characters: My expectations of John and Ingrid ended up being way off. In the series this novel is a prequel to, John and Ingrid are the wise, godly, almost angelic parents. And in the beginning of this novella, they're none of those things. Which is great. I love flawed characters who grow over the course of the story. I just wish I'd read this novella before I started the series. Not only would I've had a better understanding of John and Ingrid but I also wouldn't have had those pesky expectations. :)
Language: Clean.
Moral: The main theme was finding where you really belong.
Plot: John and Ingrid's romance was the main plot. I thought it was interesting how Susan May Warren had each chapter represent a year in their relationship. You might think that would make the story rushed, but it didn't.
Romance: Clean. Mostly. Just a few kisses. But they were a little too described, and one almost became more.
Writing: As usual, I really enjoyed Susan May Warren's writing. She's great!
Overall: Since I'm not a romantic, this one wasn't my favorite. But I'd still recommend it to readers who enjoy Christian fiction and contemporary romance.
I really loved this novella! In some ways, most novellas seem very short and rushed - not so with I Really Do Miss Your Smile. I loved how the book was written - each chapter had its own year in which it took place. I think that is one of the reasons the book felt longer, because the story traversed several years' time.
The story was touching and after finishing it, I was anxious to continue the Christiansen Family series with Take A Chance On Me. I recommend I Really Do Miss Your Smile - this prequel novella can be found at the end of book two, It Had To Be You. Great read!

Going back to John and Ingrid’s early days was so much fun! I actually didn’t realize this novella would be a bonus at the end of It Had To Be You and I’m so happy that I got the chance to read this. John and Ingrid are the bedrocks of Deep Haven and seeing them as teenagers then as young adults while John pursued fame and his dream of football and Ingrid patiently waited for him while volunteering around the world definitely made me see them in a different light. No wonder they are so sympathetic and wise when it comes to what their children are going through! It’s a heart-warming novella about finding your true home. A delightful read on a cold snowy afternoon.
3.4 -- I enjoyed the story, but the grammar and punctuation problems were distracting to me. I would have given this 4 stars if not for that. The author and the editor need to learn how to use commas and conjunctions correctly and how to recognize sentence fragments. This novella was riddled with them.
This prequel was included in my kindle edition of It Had to Be You.
This is a sweet, poignant love story, and a really great little prequel to the Christiansen Family series. The series, starting with Take a Chance on Me, is going to follow the lives of all the siblings in the Christiansen family. This novella gives us a little bit of a deeper look at their parents, John and Ingrid, and basically the roots of where the family began.
I'm always impressed with novellas that can make me feel for the characters as deeply as I feel for characters in full length novels, considering you have much less time to spend getting to know the characters in a work that is only about 67 pages long. It must be very difficult to create that depth that takes it beyond just a cute short story to something more, but Susan definitely achieves it here. From the very beginning I cared for these characters and what they were going through. Don't be fooled by the short length. A lot happens in this little novella. Love lost and found, growing up, dreams scattered and rebuilt, death and new life. I loved getting to see the characters I had already become acquainted with in Take a Chance on Me in this new and different light. And, as with all Deep Haven novels, the setting shines, and transports you to sunny days on a peaceful lake surrounded by evergreens in a sweet, sleepy town on the North Shore. This novella also had a fun 80's soundtrack running through it, which made me kinda want to make a mix tape of all the old favorites that were mentioned. :) I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I was sad to see it end.
This is the prequel to the Christiansen Family Series and is probably my favorite Novella that I've read. If you are reading The Christiansen Family Series, I Really Do Miss Your Smile, is a must read. It is the love story of John and Ingrid Christiansen. Though this story is short, Susan May Warren develops the characters superbly. It honestly gives the satisfaction of reading a full length novel.
Ingrid begins falling for John when she is thirteen and her family vacations to Evergreen Resort on an annual basis. Though John has his eyes on Ingrid’s older sister, Kari, Ingrid cannot help but still care for him. The story is fun because readers are given a yearly account ranging from 1976 through 1987 and it completely draws you in. I enjoyed this story as it is such a charming bonus piece of the entire Christiansen Family saga.
I read I Really Do Miss Your Smile—the prequel to the Christiansen Family series—last year and was pleasantly surprised that it is now included as a free novella at the end of It Had To Be You. I loved reading John and Ingrid's story and seeing how this whole family saga got started. While this is a short novella at only 65-ish pages, I still felt like it was a complete story. Don't miss out on this sweet story! [5 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from Tyndale through Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Ingrid and John have a summer friendship that gets misinterpreted wrongly and misunderstanding occurs on both sides. Ingrid's sister Kari pokes her nose in from jealousy and Kari tries to lure John and he rejects her pass. Being in the peace corp in Ecuador and climatic disasters happen and communication is out doesn't help when a letter from Kari changes Ingrid's opinion of John and decides to not come home. Leads into the generations of Christianson's family business the Evergreen Resort and regular patrons who come each year in summer.
I usually don't like novellas because it seems they are too short to really get into the heart and soul of a character and a story. However, I was proven wrong by this one. MS. Warren has an uncanny ability to weave a story that touches my heart at the deepest level. The love and romance woven into this story was beyond beautiful, poignant and heartwarming. It was so refreshing to read the story of the matriarch/patriarch of the Christiansen family. This is a story I could easily read again and again. I LOVED it!
This was a perfect prequel to the Christiansen family. It was a sweet read. It amazes me how even with a few words Susan May Warren can convey such a deep wonderful love story.
If you aren't sure you would like Christian Fiction - this the book to read. It is a short and full story, but not pushy with faith. Warren always does a great job of making it known that God is there in such a gentle way.
Now I am ready to see how the Christiansen family continues.
A beautiful prequel to the fabulous Christiansen Family series. Rarely do I enjoy novellas as much as I did this one. It is well written, captivating and motivating . . . . . a lot of story in just a short amount of time!
This is the prequel to the series... it is a novella (short story) and for what it is, it is absolutely wonderful! Loved reading the romance that started it all! And to top it off, it was free with my purchase of Book 2 in this series!
It’s the story of the parents in the family, and is a most delightful read that I greatly enjoyed. All in all, I recommend this series and can’t wait for more!
I loved John and Ingrid's story of how they got together.
Each chapter was a year and it was a great way to show how their relationship developed. Only a novella, but it was a strong one and I was caught up all the way through the story.

I Really Do Miss Your Smile by Susan May Warren Christiansen Family Series Book 0.5 John Christiansen was going to play football one day in the big league and never look over his shoulder at the small town he grew up in. Too bad if his dad would have to sell the resort that had been in their family for three generations. Easy words for a young man of eighteen.
Ingrid Young's family had been coming to the same resort since she was thirteen. And that was how long she'd been in love with John. Of course, like all guys, he only had eyes for her sister, Kari. She'd find a way to make John see her. And she tried summer after summer.
This was such a good read, but very emotional. Definitely one to have tissues handy. To have one-two weeks a year to see the person your heart pines for and to go home disappointed until the next year. The author has these two go through many ups and downs. It was a real page turner and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
I really missed your smile-- Susan May Warren This is the very beginning of the Evergreen Resort stories in Deep Haven and the Christiansen Family. It’s a story of coming of age, forgiveness, and choosing what is best in life. We learn about John and how he really wants to make a name for himself and get out of Deep Haven. He doesn’t really want to take over the family business of running the Resort. We also meet Ingrid who is young and always in her sister Kari’s shadow. The girls come to Deep Haven and the Resort every summer with their parents. Ingrid feels like she has grown up watching John from afar. Now she wants him to notice her. Yet, her idea of what she wants in life is so different from his. Will they find what they each want? Well…. you’ll just have to read the book and find out for yourself.
You won’t be disappointed! I received this book free from the author to pre-read and review.
This was a nice small book that I found for free on Susan May Warren's web site as a download. In addition I found this little story in the back of book #2 of the Christiansen Family series "It Had To Be You". The story provides a great foundation for the Christiansen Family story. As with all Warren stories it was well written and hard to put down. Can't wait to read the rest of the series!!

I enjoyed the prequel to her Christiansen Family Series. The story is about a teenage girl and boy who only see each other each summer when her family goes to spend a week at a campground run by his family. Although my story is very different, it reminds me of mine and my wife's early days of dating. When we first met at church, she was much too young for me. That's how John saw Ingrid. I received this as a free download from the author for joining her newsletter list. I recommend the prequel and will be looking for the full series to enjoy.
I Really do Miss Your Smile, written by Susan May Warren, is a novella that tells the tale of when and where the saga of the Christiansen family began. This short story contains a fun tale that must not be missed!
I have read and enjoyed each novel in the Christiansen Family series. It was great to also read this story about how John and Ingrid first met when she vacationed with her family every summer at his family's lodge, how they fell in love and after a bit of difficulty, how they finally decided to build a life together!
I Really Do Miss Your Smile (A Christiansen Family Novella)**** by Susan May Warren
I Really Do Miss Your Smile is a prequel to the Christiansen Family series, gives us a look into the family's beginnings from 1976-1987 and the Evergreen Resort. This is the parents—Ingrid and John's story—of learning what they want out of life, forgiveness, faith and love. A heartwarming, sweet story.
~I received a PDF copy of this story from the author, this is my honest review~
