Synopsis:
Evelyn Dax is in love with her new boss, Jeff Richards. She does not want to reveal her feelings because of their professional relationship, however when Jeff asks her to accompany him during a business trip, the two spend a passionate night together.
Although attracted to Evy, Jeff decides to limit their relationship to business-related issues only, as he is afraid of any commitment.Soon after coming back to the office in Boston, Jeff faces a sabotage plot against him triggered by one of the board members of the company they both work for. He is given a difficult task to accomplish and if he fails, he will lose his job.
Laura Levinson, Evy’s best friend, learns she suffers from breast cancer and, with the support of her loving husband Bruce, she undergoes traumatic chemotherapy. While weakened and discouraged by the lack of progress with her treatment, she meets Alyssa, a healer, who miraculously helps her recover completely from her illness.
Encouraged by Alyssa’s magic, Evelyn decides to seek her help regarding Jeff’s lack of attention. Soon the healer’s intervention is visible; Evy spends a passionate night with what appears to be an imagined entity introducing itself as Jeff.At the same time, the real Jeff’s feelings towards Evelyn begin to change drastically and the more often the intimate distractions, first pleasant, later on disturbing, happen to Evy, the more Jeff resents her.
Shortly after Laura’s recovery, Bruce is diagnosed with lung cancer. All of these strange events cause Evy to begin wondering who Alyssa really is...

I love it! The characters- Evy, Laura… their struggles... It's amazing how the details about the "world" Agatha gives enrich the story - like the music Evy listens to :) A beautiful, moving and complex plot , real and yet surprising and incredibly engrossing! A total must-read! Thanks a million, Agatha! :)
This book grabbed my attention not only with it's tender love stories, but with the eerie events occurring that kept me reading to find out where it all ended. The two couples are in different places, but share passion for life as they struggle through the path they are on. I'm not usually a big reader of this genre, but I'm glad I took the time to read this book.
Evelyn Dax has fallen for her boss, someone is out to ruin Jeff Richards whom is having other odd problems, and Laura and Bruce Levinson are battling an enemy from the inside. All of these troubles stem from a connection from a Greek Nymph. How could this be?
My first problem with this book is the fact that it took me around 100 pages before I got interested in it. The story switches the points of views between the four main characters and a few other characters involved with the main plot. In the beginning, you meet Eve who can't get her boss out of her mind or her dreams. She wants him with a passion she has never felt but doesn't possess the courage to go after him. Jeff, who happens to be the object of Eve's obsession, is running into problems in his professional life due to an enemy out to ruin him along with a cold that takes over his body at odd times. Laura and Bruce are deeply in love, but that love is tested when Laura starts battling for her life. Due to temptation to find the easy solution to her problems, Laura contacts a woman who claims to be able to help her heal. Life is good for Laura now so Eve decides to seek the same help. For awhile both of these women seem to have their lives back until strange and scary events beginning happening to them. Once you hit this point in the book you really want to find out how these women can fix the problems they have invited into their lives without losing anyone they love. It may just be me, but I like my love scenes with at least a little more heat and spice. You knew when the characters were intimate but there were no kind of details to capture my attention for them. During some parts, I was touched by the strength of love between certain characters. It showed the devotion between a man who truly loves his wife and is determined to stick by her side through everything. This is a pretty good read for a debut novel yet has not been one of my favorites. I do look forward to Agatha's future works because she is on the right track to writing a wonderful and capturing read.
There are so many things that I like about "Oenone"...that's why I'd like to list the first 5 of them - top five elements that make the book so awesome!
1. Original style of writing - the plot, which btw is incredibly interesting, is presented in such a way that you simply can't stop reading! The author's style together with her brilliant ideas for the protagonist and the rest of the characters have created a real page-turner!
2. Cultural added value - Agatha decided to depict, or at least sketch a cultural background for the story - I love music, that is why I particularly enjoy numerous references to those amazing music compositions.
3. Real emotions - when I was reading "Oenone" I lived Evy's life...I cried and laughed with Laura..I appreciate the effort Agatha made to present not only the physical world but also the emotional dimension in such a fascinating way.
4. The plot - the whole idea of a Greek nymph and her powers creating confusion in the lives of ordinary people and the fact that it's all unpredictable and dynamic makes me want to devour the book at once ;)
5. Sexy sex - love scenes, sex scenes! are amazing :) I want moreee!!
If you're looking for something new, original and surprising, read "Oenone" :)
"Oenone" is, undoubtedly, a unique book, a unique story. Everything about is simply different. Author's style, which makes you think you're rather watching a good quality independent film, the plot, which in the whole flood of vampires and zombies, serves as a nice refreshments and digs out the classic supernaturals taken straight from Olympus, characters whose stories seem so real it's almost impossible to tell they're fictional.
The story of Evy and Jeff as well as the secondary characters', grips the reader's attention right from the beginning and holds it until the end, which is unexpected and unpredictable. "Oenone" has everything emotions, a doze of very tasteful sensuality, three great plots, supernatural drama, and some truly funny moments and, what does not happen too often, a very important message.
The reading was simply a breeze and everyone seeking something new ought to reach for this book. Read it, you'll see for yourself! I highly recommend it!
It has been a long time since I have read something and it was truly unique. This book is just that. Unique and it stands in a class by itself. Oenone--an Indie film in book form-- as I like to call it, is fascinating, different and easy to read.
In the beginning of this book, Evelyn Dax talks with her best friend, Laura, about her work crush. It isn't long after until the crush turns into an obsession come unexpected turn/twist of events.
In all honesty, this book is very hard to review without giving it away. All I can say is this, the book is different and it is unlike anything I have ever read. This type of 'paranormal' is very much unlike the others. This book has characters with real life problems with the twist of the paranormal.
Read it, enjoy it, and pass the love of Oenone on. You won't be sorry.
Yes! I read it! It had to be a light book for a few evenings. Unfortunately! I read it in a few hours because with every chapter I wanted to know more and more. More about Eve. More about Laura. More about mysterious mythical Oenone. More about Jeff and his work. Brilliantly shown trials and tribulations of ordinary people with heads full of dreams. All of this is interspersed with gray reality and the world of fantasy. Full of humor, music (even though we didn’t hear it, it's there!), love, passions, emotions, suffering .... The End came, as always with good books, too quickly. It left that silly feeling that I can’t turn the next page and I can’t read what will happen because I still want more and more
Such a good read! It's amazing how attached you get to the characters throughout the course of the story. Definitely recommend it... but make sure you have some time because it is hard to put down once you start!
I say YES a hundred times to Oenone:)- I patienly waited (it felt like ages though:)) for a paperback version while it was already released as an e-book (I’m a stubborn traditionalist:)). My patience was rewarded big time- I was really impressed- the book is excellent:) Firstly, I love the cover- it feels like the mysterious green eye hides some secrets behind and you want to discover them right away. Secondly, the book is written in such style, that it catches your attention instantly, grabs you straight at the beginning and doesn’t loosen the grip till the end- I literally couldn’t stop reading:). The plot is focused on the lives of two close friends: Evy and Laura, whose devotion and love to each other and family is boundless. Getting to know them while turning page after page was so easy and natural- actually it felt like I knew them already:)- music they listened to, movies they watched, books they read, intertwined with their specific and charming sense of humor- it all felt so familiar and known. I laughed out loud with them:) The idyll, however, doesn’t last long- Laura’s unfortunate serious sickness and Evy’s love problems turn their lives upside down, test their friendship and probe their strenght and resilience. ‘A drowning man clutches at a straw’ so do our characters, they clutch at the mysterious and enigmatic ‘person’, who later on severly complicates their lives. Suffice to say, the girls open the Pandora’s box and realize they have to do everything in their power to put things right back. Otherwise they will pay a heavy price- implications are far more disturbing they could have foreseen. Would they achieve their goal or not? And who is that mystic and miraculous, yet dangerous individual they were dealing with? You must find out:) I strongly recommend Oenone- it’s a wonderful, well conceived read:) The plot referring to Greek mythology is fascinating, refreshing and stimulating. Two worlds are skilfully interconnected in such way that an engaged reader keeps on turning page after page to see what will happen next. Relationships between characters are very real- they laugh, fool around, make love, quarrel, cry and reconcile- all of it really makes you feel connected with them, feel for them and, obviously, want more of them:) I really love the world Agatha has created and I’m impatiently waiting for more:) Already addicted:)
Oenone by Agatha Rae is a debut novel. It is a quite remarkable accomplishment, not only because the author is able to sustain suspense and capturing the reader's interest by means of rapid shifts of scene; the novel is also noteworthy because it adheres - in the estimation of this reviewer - to the genre of the fantastic as defined by Tzwetan Todorov in his book Introduction a la litterature fantastique: "In a world which is indeed our world, the one we know, a world without devils, sylphides, or vampires, there occurs an event which cannot be explained by the laws of this same familiar world. The person who experiences the event must opt for one of two possible solutions: either he is the victim of an illusion of the senses, or a product of the imagination - and laws of the world then remain what they are; or else the event has indeed taken place, is an integral part of reality - but then this reality is controlled by laws unknown to us ...The fantastic occupies the duration of this uncertainty." - Applying Todorov's definition of the fantastic, the question becomes, then, to what extent does the author of Oenone implement the concept of the fantastic? The answer is: To an astonishing extent; for the appearance of the Greek nymph Oenone, initially in the form of the healer Alyssa who cures the character Laura of cancer, passes the cancer on to her husband Bruce, then expunges it from him as well, is portrayed convincingly since it blends in with clinical psychology and medicine, Freudian psychology (here especially in the case of the two characters Evelyn and Jeff whose sexual passions are examples of a libido enforced by Oenone's supernatural powers) and poetic justice. In brief, this reader rates Oenone highly. Professor Jorgen Veisland University of Gdansk
I love this book - one of the best books that I've read for a long long time. The plot took me completely by surprise - in a good way - and the fact that I learned the real story about Troj.
This is a fresh breath, and I hope that Agatha Rae will write more books, maybe about Eve, but also someone elses story.
I loved the music references and tv-show references :)
Everyones story made sence, and it was all related.
Evy - You could feel her pain when she realized that she was in big trouble about her feelings for her boss, Jeff. I like how the author described her friendship with Laura, and that Evy felt guilty when she didn't call Laura back when she had the feeling that something was wrong. She shouldn't feel guilty, but that is what happend when your closest friend need you.
Jeff - The boss. The author describe him as a very good boss, and he know that he shouldn't get involved with Evy, but he can't help it. He struggles alot with that, but....And again you can feel his struggle. But not everyone like that he is the boss, and someone wants him out, but who?
Laura - the best friend and co-worker. She got cancer, and she is really ill. She seekes help outside the hospitale, but will it help her in the end? Her story is facinating, and you want her to get bether, but will she?
Bruce - Lauras husband and soulmate. Stand by Lauras side through everything. He stand by her side and watch her make some moves that is very questionable, but he let her follow her gut, even if he doesn't agree. Will that affect him?? Read the book - only time will tell :)
Oenone by Agatha Rae is a contemporary romance with a small supernatural twist. The story focuses on best friends, Evelyn & Laura. They work together as editors in Boston. Evelyn is single and very attracted to their boss, Jeff. Laura is in a loving marriage with her wonderful husband, Bruce. Laura develops cancer and searches for a miracle and that's where the supernatural twist comes in...but the miracle really isn't a miracle. The story was well written and well edited, although a few times it was obvious that English was not the author's primary language. The book was very detailed and gave the reader an abundance of information about the character's daily life. At times I felt that it was a little too detailed and that the excessive details slowed down the pace of the book. The story was interesting and I liked the supernatural twist, but I didn't love all the characters, though. Evelyn came across as a petty person who cared more about her love life than anything else. And Jeff's character was ok but a little bit of a jerk. Laura & Bruce appealed to me much more than Evelyn & Jeff. I liked how they portrayed a loving married couple dealing with a huge health issue and supporting each other. Adding in the supernatural twist added real intrigue to the story and made it more interesting. I loved how everything tied together in the end and Evelyn and Laura solved their own problems. If you like shows like Sex In The City and contemporary romance/supernatural books, then you'll probably enjoy this book.
The novel is advertised as a fantasy with a little touch of mythology. I picked it a little differently. For about 150 pages it was a great and well run novel of manners. It discussed the problems of loneliness, ideal relationship, which came to collide with a terminal illness, the realities of working in publishing, unrequited love, and climbing the career ladder in a big Boston. When Laura finds an enigmatic leaflet, the novel is introduced to the atmosphere of mystery and esoteric. It is worth noting that this is not intrusive and doesn't leak from each side. It is rather subtle and intriguing.
Greek mythology represented by the title Oenone is a perfect complement to the book. "Oenone" is a perfect basis for the author to write the next part of the book. I love the her style of writing!Even if I did not know, who goes by the pseudonym Agatha Rae, I'd know it after the first 100 pages of the book. I love how the author intertwines movies, music, TV series into the story, I simply writes the titles down on a piece of paper and then I track them all down on the Internet.
A great, fresh and extremely original novel. I'm looking forward to the next book.I’ve been the author’s fan for some time now!
A beautifully written novel about two friends and their encounter with the supernatural. I have been looking for fresh reading material for some time and Oenone definitely hit the spot! This novel has everything, a touch of romance, friendship, reality, and just enough magic to make it fun! the story revolves around two friends Evy and Laura. Each living their own lives and consumed by their own problems but forever leaning on each other. From Evy longing for her boss Jeff, to Laura longing to be healthy, not one detail is lost in Agatha Rae's writing. This book keeps you reading, it never gets dull or slows down! This book is rooted in reality and dealing with everyday life however has a touch of the supernatural. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something fresh and new!
A pleasant surprise! When I started reading Oenone, I thought nice, good characters and good story. You get two stories in one. The more I read the more I found. Agatha Rae made me laugh, cry and scream. Which in my opinion, means she did her job. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, bang you go somewhere new. This was an amazing read and I enjoyed all the twist and turns. You are in for an amazing journey with Evy,Jeff, Laura, and Bruce. Go, read and enjoy.
Are you looking for something different to read? This is the one for you. Although this book has several characters to keep up with, it does nothing to take away from the story. It's written in a unique style and delves into mythology that has obviously been well-researched.
Touching and well-written, I think if you enjoy this genre, then you'll not be disappointed. Give Oenone a shot.
Although fantasy isn't my thing, I enjoyed every page of this book. It is very well-written and you just can't stop reading, the plot is so absorbing. Romance, feelings, relationships, health problems and difficulties at work – it's all there. It's amazing that this is Agatha Rae's debut novel. Definitely a must-read!
This book is simply wonderful. It's got the thrill, the sex, the drama, the supernatural element (Greek mythology! Brilliant!). The narration is very distinguishable and unique, I can honestly say you've probably never read anything like this before. What a debut! I want more!
One of the most interesting literary debuts! Great narration, very real characters, real problems, real desires. The only unreal thing is the story which is simply superbly good - fresh, original, and it makes readers ask themselves some very serious questions. I highly recommend it!
This was a really good read that kept me interested with the fantasy twists, and the characters Laura and Eve were really interesting to follow. You can't beat a good romance with some fantasy, humor, and powerful female leads.
Oenone is for the readers who wish to spice things up in their library..So if you want o read something a bit different, a Sex&The City meet Supernatural kind of book, then this is the book for you!
Oenone is the debut novel of Agatha Rae and it shows that she has some serious potential..
Ok Then..Let’s Take A Look at the book and the characters..
>>Evy is the one female lead, who is in love with her boss Jeff. She has been pining for him for months, never going beyond the occasional flirts. But at some point they have a sexy night together, which ends badly the next morning.
And the pining continues..And then she goes to Alyssa for help. Help her to fall out of love with him? Get him to fall for her? The whole thing was a bit ludicrous, but funny as hell…
>>Jeff is the relating male lead, who is pretty indecisive..It never ceases to amaze me how determined ambitious successful men turn to indecisive insecure blind boys..Well the poor guy suffered from the side-effects of Alyssa’s doings and never had a clue about any of it. So I should cut him some slack..However, some opinions of his were ludicrous, as well. They barely slept together and he was panicking for the future and marriage..I was laughing so hard in that moment..Priceless! I have to say that the men were much more sensible than the ladies in the book..Hard to believe but true..
>>Laura is the other female lead and best friend of Evy and wife of Bruce. Laura is a very funny woman and I enjoyed her very much. She was a good friend and gave solid advice..She is strong despite what happened to her and despite what happened after what happened to her… >>Bruce is Laura’s husband and stood by her every second of her suffering. He always said the right things to her and helped her maintain any sanity she had left and any piece of her that threatened to fade away. He is the hero of the book, in my opinion.
So….The million dollar question is what I thought of the book…
I liked it..I always like different ideas and I enjoy seeing authors take some risks..Oenone was a bit of a risk but I think it payed off..
It’s a book that it’s fun to read, despite the fact cancer makes an appearance in it..The characters are quite a bit loony but they’re intriguing and funny as hell..The story was solid..
In conclusion, You want something entirely different from your repertoire? Something you can laugh at and with? But you also want your paranormal? The Get Oenone!
Evelyn Dax is in love with her boss, Jeff Richards has an enemy and has been feeling a little cold lately, and Laura and Bruce Levinson have health problems. What does that all have to do with one Greek Nymph?
My Review ~
I really wanted to like this book because it features a character from Greek Mythology. I usually love books that are based on or feature that story element. Unfortunately this wasn't the case for Oenone.
The book could have a lot of potential with the storyline, if it had been stripped down a bit. There are too many flaws with the overall completed story for this reader/reviewer. I was pulled constantly from the story due to sentence structure and syntax being incorrect. While for some it may not take away from the story, for me it disrupted the flow completely. Many times I wondered if this book had been previously written in another language and translated into English as the sentence structure was similar but not quite English.
My other big issue was that there were too many points of view in the story. It would have been better to have broken the story up into two interconnected books instead of one longer book to give full attention to both stories equally. As it was, it took me a while to get into the characters because there was just too much to keep separate among the storylines.
While this book didn't completely work for me I encourage every reader to discover for themselves if it will work for them. ~ Reviewed by Chris

Evelyn is an editor working in a publishing house in Boston. She is secretly in love with her boss, Jeff, but due to their professional relationship she is not sure if she has any chances to be with him. Jeff, on the other hand, is focused on his job because the publishing company's situation is not too good, not to mention he has problems with his co-workers. Evelyn's best friend, Laura, is about to face serious health issues and this time the support of her loving husband, Bruce, may not be enough for her to feel better again. The two women, each of them with different motivation, decide to seek supernatural power to help them. And once they find it, they open Pandora box...
The book is descibed as a contemporary/urban romance, however, even though there are such elements in the story, it is more a story about life, friendship, love and patience. It is about loyalty, relationships and support. The esoteric/supernatural element is only something helping boosting the plot, pushing it to another level, and making it only more dramatic and interesting. The nymph appearing as the book's title, has some nasty plans, but, ironically, she pushes the main characters into honesty and love. Don't worry, I won't tell you how :)
The narration seems really original, unique, perhaps because the author is Polish, perhaps because it's her debut novel. Or perhaps both, but it certainly feels different. I've had some great time reading it, there were many emotional elements, which seemed very real and palpable, there were funny moments, dramatic moments, and few elements of real surprise. I enjoyed it a lot and I look forward to Agatha Rae's further books.
First of all, I'm not really too big on supernatural stories. I did think though that this book was very promising to begin with so I still went for it.
I really wanted to like this story but it just fell short for me. First, I think there were too many side stories going on. I understand that each story was essential to the overall plot of the book but then again, it was just too much. Second, there were parts in the book that in my humble opinion wasn't really that important to be added in there. Third, I got confused in the beginning when I didn't know whose POV was narrating, only to realize it was narrated not by the characters in the book.
What I liked about the book was that it revolved about publishing and editorial. As a reader, I've always been a fan of anything book-related so getting an inside story about what goes on in publishing books and editing and all that stuff has fascinated me and grabbed my attention. So now I have a new dream job, an editor. Hehehe. I also liked Laura and Bruce's characters. Their love was so pure and beautiful and for a moment there I really felt their pain. On the other hand, I think Jeff and Evy's story could've been more. I think their love story had potential but again it just fell short.
In my younger years, Mythology has always fascinated me and I liked that this book had that. I also appreciate that this book taught a very good lesson about love, friendship, honesty and most importantly, patience.
"Oenone" by Agatha Rae was a book recommended to me by my friend in Italy, who accidentally came across it during the summer. Now knowing anything about the author, I was a bit sceptical at first, but encouraged by my friend, I decided to give it a try and read it. It was definitely a good decision.
I loved "Oenone". I loved the original idea of incorporating esoteric elements in contemporary romance/drama novel. I loved that it took part in Boston, a city I have always dreamt of seeing and that Agatha paid attention to details concerning the city so much that, in fact, you can simply google the streets, the restaurants, even the buildings, and you can see the same places where the characters work, live and go out. I loved the characters who are so real, have flaws and yet teach us, the readers, very valuable lessons about live, friendship, love and loyalty.
There is a significant difference between the first and the second half of the book, the supernatural element that appears in the middle of the story, changes the novel's tempo drastically, and from that moment on you seriously cannot put the book down. I was reading it on a bus, while eating breakfast, all the time. I had no idea when those 378 pages finished, but I do know I am going to miss the characters. They simply grew on me.
I recommend "Oenone" to everyone. It's one of the best books I've read for some time. It feels fresh, it's dynamic, it has very good vibes and energy. I love it. Give it a try.
About half a year Evy is single, after her boyfriend got a job in another city they decided to separate friendly. Since then she dreams about Jeff, about half a year she have those sweaty dreams. In those dreams she has hot nights with her chef Jeff. So how couldn’t she not dreaming about him when he is simply wonderful, so handsome, friendly, helpful and charming. She have a very good friends Laura and Bruce Levinson, but every Evy’s problem will seams so pathetic when they will finds that Laura is seek. After some situation strange things began to happen. I enjoy reading this book cause the story simply flowed without any distractions and unnecessary situations. The tone is calm and soothing. The sentences are short and they tell you exactly what you suppose to know about situations and actions of the main characters. I love it. Then I love that “secret” character is so intriguing and make you to read and make you to willing what happen here. This is paranormal book but even if you don’t like that genre you will love this book I’m certain in that. This book was provided by the author for honest review.
A surprisingly well written debut novel. The author has already published two books in Poland, but this is her debut as a novel writer. And I must say, I am impressed.
The pace is great, the tempo of the story increases dramatically in the middle of the story and doesn't let you down until the very last pages. The fantastic esoteric element makes "Oenone" irresistable to all fans of supernatural out there; the idea to incorporate a Greek nymph into the story is very fresh and unique.
I enjoyed the characters especially Bruce and Laura who are a wonderful couple, but also the main characters, Jeff and Evy are very likeable and their dilemmas and problems seem plausable and palpable, and the reader really can understand and feel their problems. All of them have been created with care; you just like them.
I look forward to reading some more stories from Agatha Rae, I find her to be a very promising author.
I highly recommend "Oenone" to everyone, it's a mixture of drama, fantasy, supernatural and romance, so everyone can find something they like. I know I did :)
The book is a debut in this genre for writer Agatha Rae.
The story focused mainly on Evy and her feelings about her boss Jeff. But also on the way things one might consider important one moment can change when someone you are close to may be seriously ill and you risk losing them.
And what happens when you want something so badly that you are willing to do anything without realizing what the consequences of one's action might be.
The book is a novel, but it also contains fantasy. Something one might not initially realize. The author makes clear how to see each of the main character's feelings and lets one understand them and their actions.
I think this book was good. That the author has a simple language when she tells the story was positive for me that usually don´t read in English.
