About the author

A scholar of the early American republic, Ray Watkins Irwin was a graduate of Drury College who earned an masters' degree from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from New York University. He taught at New York University and the University of Arkansas before his retirement in 1968.

What an excellent book about a forgotten figure in American history. I came out of this with a newfound appreciation (and pity) for Tompkins.
