HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENTERPRISING GOVERNOR IN THE WAR OF 1812. ORGANIZING STATE MILITIA COST HIM GREAT AMOUNTS OF MONEY. HE INVESTED HIS OWN MONEY WHEN LEGISLATURE DID NOT APPROVE THE NEEDED FUNDS.
A scholar of the early American republic, Ray Watkins Irwin was a graduate of Drury College who earned an masters' degree from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from New York University. He taught at New York University and the University of Arkansas before his retirement in 1968.
