Secrets and Lies ( Cassie Scot #2) by Christine Amsden is a 2013 Twilight Times Publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This second in the Cassie Scot Paranormal Detective series picks up where the first one left off. Cassie has moved in with her friend and is out of a job, estranged from her parents, broken up with her boyfriend and struggling with her feelings for Evan. When two girls disappear from camp, Cassie looks into the case, although her boss still hasn't hired her back.
Meanwhile, Cassie's pregnant mother is not doing so well. When all else fails, she is hospitalized. Cassie is guilted into visiting her. The result is the revelation of a shocking secret from her mother's past that goes a long way in explaining why Cassie finds herself in the situation she has lived with her whole life.. her lack of magical abilities.
The issues with Evan's family and Cassie's family that have caused them to become bitter enemies is still a mystery to Cassie and Evan. But, Evan will be given a hint of why Cassie's family have such strong feelings against his father. The truth will knock him to his knees.

This chapter in the series is more powerful than the first one was. Things really begin heat up as Cassie learns more about her mother's past, admits her feelings for Evan, still kicks butt as a detective, and tries to help a friend going through a really hard time. The secrets are stunning and I think that Cassie will have a chance to heal the rift between herself and her family in time. It won't be easy, but it's obvious they do love her. As for Evan, only time will tell. There is still a great many questions that will have to be answered and once the chips fall the results are sure to be mind blowing.

Cassie is a person that despite being from a magical family is someone people can relate to. She is different and suffers prejudice as a result. But, she doesn't let it get to her. She moves forward no matter what life throws at her. She isn't superwoman, she doesn't have a natural ability like her siblings, she is as normal as her life will allow. She is a good friend, a good daughter, a good sister and a good example. She is someone you can imagine being friends with in real life.
The only thing I get angry about is that so often is seems Cassie ends up going it alone. Having to keep her family secrets and being different from them, and with her friends all being involved in their own problems, Evan is in constant conflict, Cassie sort of slips through the cracks. But, if it makes any difference, I'm in her corner cheering her on.
I can not recommend this series highly enough. If you like paranormal mystery and romance, YA or New Adult you will love this series. This one is an A+

Secrets and Lies is the second installment in the Cassie Scot new adult paranormal mystery series. Though there’s a bit of backstory in this novel, it’s preferable to read the books in order, if only to find out from the beginning who Cassie is, how she got started as a detective and, especially, how her romance with Evan evolved. Also to understand the animosity between their families.

In Secrets and Lies, two girls have gone missing from a summer camp and although the local police have already started investigating, Cassie is hired by a family member of the girls to help in the case. Evan, always wanting to protect Cassie, joins her in the investigation.

Because Evan saved Cassie’s life in book 1, Cassie believes she owes him and finds it difficult to deny him what he wants. This makes life both frustrating and thrilling for Cassie, who is not only an independent, smart, 21-year old sleuth, but she’s also powerfully attracted to him and prone to succumb to his charms…but who can resist a charismatic, handsome warlock?

As the two begin to investigate, it becomes increasingly obvious that magic is involved, and that the girls might still be alive. At the same time, there seems to be a “ghost” or “invisible person” robbing banks in town. Are the robberies and the girls’ disappearance connected in some way? Adding further tension to the mystery is the ongoing war between Cassie and her parents, who betrayed and disowned her in book 1, as well as the unending feud between Cassie’s and Evan’s families, who totally loath each other. This, of course, puts pressure on the young couple, who are not only in lust but also in love.

As Cassie closes in on the villains, tormenting issues about her mother resurface. On her mother’s deathbed, Cassie must make a decision that could forever distance her from her mother or could possibly reunite them — or at least ease some of the tension in the family and improve their relationship. The book isn’t titled Secrets and Lies for nothing, as there are plenty of these in the story, not to mention enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read. First of all, what I love most about Cassie is her voice. She is very likable and sympathetic, with just the right amount of good qualities and flaws. She’s smart, independent, witty, sensitive, and has a good heart. Amsden does an excellent job with her character’s interiority.

The second aspect of this novel I enjoyed the most is the romance between Cassie and Evan. It’s just the right amount, without veering the plot away from the mystery. It also has its fair share of tension, as we never know how it’s going to end up for these two. The author keeps us guessing in this roller-coaster of a love story.

The pace flows fairly quickly, as this author doesn’t use too much exposition or description. Action and dialogue propel the story forward. The paranormal aspect adds fun and spice to the story without getting overwhelming, and I enjoyed all the magic 101.

The ending left me breathless with a mega-revelation that will have a major impact on the relationship between Cassie and Evan. Having read both books in the series, this is my favorite, and I can’t wait to see what Amsden will come up with in her next installment, soon to come out in 2014. Fans of paranormal mysteries will relish this one.

4.5 Stars

Secrets and Lies is the second book in the Cassie Scot series. It's not a standalone novel, so be sure to read Cassie Scot ParaNormal Detective first. I enjoyed this novel as much as the first, though I think this one was a tad darker, with quite a bit more angst. The angst was flying at Cassie from all directions this time; I'm somewhat surprised she was still sane by the end. I found it almost impossible to put it down once I started reading.

Cassie is still struggling as a non-mage from a magical family and still reeling from being disowned by her parents. Once the news spreads through Eagle Rock, it becomes common knowledge that she's no longer under her parents' protection. Unwilling to accept anything from her parents, she needs a job but has trouble finding anyone willing to employ her. I felt so sorry for Cassie. She's practically turned into a sideshow in the town as everyone whispers about her life. If her family problems weren't enough, she's wrestling with her life debt to Evan and her feelings for him. She has no idea whether her feelings are genuine or if they're influenced by the life debt.

Cassie is just beginning to learn how much her parents kept from her regarding the magic society. Perhaps they felt they were protecting her, but I have a feeling keeping secrets was more at issue. The interactions she has with her family are heartbreaking; it's almost as though her siblings blame her for her absence.

Cassie becomes embroiled in another mystery and is on the case with Evan. He's not hiding his intention to be with her, making her very uncomfortable. Poor Cassie spends so much time fighting within her own head, it must be exhausting. Evan is as evasive as ever. He's pulling that alpha male - I'll keep secrets to protect her - when things would go so much smoother if he shared. Many secrets are revealed about Cassie's family, while one big bomb is dropped right at the end. This novel did not suffer from middle book syndrome at all. It was every bit as engaging as the first, even though the plot was darker. While reading, I kept thinking that it's like The Empire Strikes Back of the Cassie Scot series.

I highly recommend Secrets and Lies to everyone 17+. It's the perfect combination of entertaining characters and intriguing plot. There's just something about Cassie and Evan that pull me into their story. If you've read Cassie Scot ParaNormal Detective, I bet you've been waiting for this one. I'm looking forward to Mind Games due out next year. I can't wait to see what's in store for Cassie and Evan.

***I was gifted a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review***

To start off, you need to have read Book 1 (Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective) to be up to speed on what’s happening in Cassie’s world. If you haven’t read it, I suggest you stop reading this review until you have :P

Ok, sooooooo Cassie and Evan are still at the “will they, won’t they” stage due to neither knowing if the other is showing their true feelings due to the Life Debt Cassie owes. Cassie realises she needs to get a paying job when her friend Kaitlin starts shoving bills in her face. Her brother Nicolas tries to pay her to do a investigation into the disappearance of two young girls, one of which is a distant cousin to Cassie.
Right, I think that’s an apt enough catch-up without revealing too much.

This book leaves Book 1 in it’s dust!! Yes, I did enjoy Book 1 but boy, ‘Secrets and Lies’ smacks it right out of the ball park. Here’s what I liked:
There are relatives from both the Scot and Blackmore families introduced that have had brief mentions in Book 1 but which feature much more in this book.
The disappearance of two young girls provides the brilliant storyline for Cassie’s detective skills and introduces yet more family members from both Cassie and Evan’s families.
The slow paced romance between Cassie and Evan starts to progress from sparks to flames and dies down, flares up, dies down… keeps you guessing as to which way it will actually go LOL.
Cassie’s relationship with her family is still a major bone of contention for her and it eventually comes to a head – this part actually had me saying “WHATTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!????”

Here’s what I disliked: ——-NOTHING——-

Would I read more from this author: Ummmmmm is the Pope Catholic???

Christine Amsden has the ability to weave a spell around her readers by crafting a world that is somewhat familiar to all (okay, so we don’t all experience paranormal activities or abilities, but we can relate to fathers demanding we follow their rules, overprotective brothers etc) and characters that are interesting to read about. Once she has cast that net out and hooked her readers, Christine adds action and romance to ensure her readers are snared and yes, I was fully snared and loving it.

‘Secrets and Lies’ truly delivers and for that 5 stars is my rating. I couldn’t find anything wrong with this book whatsoever.

If you didn’t read Cassie Scot, ParaNormal Detective, you missed a fun paranormal mystery romance set in a fascinating town where para is the norm. But Secrets and Lies, second in the Cassie Scot series, starts with enough hints and memories to bring characters and situations into immediate and enticing focus. Evan’s still following Cassie around. Cassie’s still struggling with being the only normal in a family of powers. And Evan’s family and Cassie’s are still at odds with each other. It doesn’t help that Cassie’s family have disowned her, or that Evan has that curious power over her... or that she’s falling in love and badly needs a job.

Family ties, self-fulfilling prophecies, stubborn independence, and secrets and lies all play their part in this fascinating mystery. Cassie’s first person narration is full of verve and character, and her “normal” methods of detection are eminently believable—maybe “not as impressive ... as crystal gazing, but... crystal gazing isn’t working.” So now she’s searching for missing girls, and trying to figure out why Evan ever uttered that fateful command to “Marry me.”

Through it all, the author keeps her character lively and convincing, never letting those internal musings grow too heavy or outweigh the story, adding just the right amount of detail and backstory, and, of course, including the perfect pinch of intrigue. If some of us just use magic for cooking, then Christine Amsden has cooked up a fine new recipe in this series, and I’m eager for more. Imagine a female Harry Dresden, in small-town America rather than big-city Chicago, with some serious romantic problems and magical weaknesses, and you’ll know why I'm hooked.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy and promised my honest review.

This story is naturally and fluidly written in a manner that draws you in. It follows in the same tone and style as the first novel in the series, adding a sense of continuity to the saga. That said, I’d highly suggest reading the first novel first. Her explicitly visual descriptions bring everything to light in a very vivid way. Amsden does a great job of introducing new and unique concepts as part of the story’s action rather than as a separate narrative. She keeps you guessing and on your toes throughout with her imaginatively suspenseful storyline. By mixing relationship drama with a murder investigation and a few other twists en route Amsden creates a masterpiece that you won’t be able to put down.

Amidst the magic and wonderment of this tale is the story of a young girl trying to succeed on her own terms, to be who she wants to be. Amsden has taken a brilliantly unique and captivating route to bring this story forward. It’s a heart-warming tale, even if it does have some heartbreaking moments and a heart shattering ending. That said, hope still shines through. By melding various prophecies together you can hold on to this hope – not only for a happy ending but for the sequel itself.

Overall, this was an entertaining tale that is fun for all ages. It’s a brilliant story (and series) that will stand the test of time. I, for one, can’t wait for more from this brilliant author.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Let me start by saying that this has to be the the No. 1 worst cover, subject to its competitor book 3, in the history of paranormal cover art. I’m sorry if I’ve hurt someone’s belief in their nebulous artistic venture. If you put your work out there in the public arena, you’re going to meet with some critics.

The book itself is a really well done novel. The first novel is good value at the moment, and well worth the go. The main character is someone that I think most of us can relate to. Feelings of inferiority abound, particularly significant for those in a larger family, where petty jealousies are made nonetheless by sometimes being very real. Add this to the fact that lots and lots of people like to keep reminding you that you have siblings, who in their mind anyway, are better than little old you.

The story is a strong one, with a good subset of supporting characters. The plot has those wheels within wheels that bring out some good surprises, all the better for when the end is wheeled out with a fine ‘bang bang’. The romance is realistically done with significant history behind it, for all to witness on the stage of life in a small town.

The novel certainly keeps you going strong with a bit of a cliffhanger that instills the need to head right on to the next book, which is what I’m doing right now!

After reading first book,I was so curious about what's going to happen about Cassie and Evan's Relationships.Lucky I have the second book but I wish I have the third book who even not published or doesn't exits.

Cassie and Evan's families are like enemies. They have never gotten along or haven't for a very long time. They can't stand the fact that Cassie and Evan have been friends since childhood. This kind of stories always reminds me Romeo&Juliet. Forbidden Love. But also there's a different thing. Cassie so afraid to trust her own feelings about Evan. In the other hand Evan wants her forever.

The end was almost made me cry. I can't believe Cassie's father say that to Evan!! Because of him they can't be together. Both fathers is evil-doer mostly Evan's father.Evan doesn't want to hurt her anymore and he leaves when Cassie accept her feelings about him!

Damn! What a Cliffhanger! I can't believe this book end like this!! I hope there's a third book!!

Still a nice read, still a YA in adult's clothes, but less cohesive and coherent than the first. (Above all the world building. ) Lost half a star for the "perceived " twilight"-esque aspect the romance.

The ending seemed to me a bit abrupt, and honestly also a WTF :).

I haven't yet decided whether to buy the 3rd book.

So far for me this series is fairly enjoyable. I think I might have liked this book more than the first except for a very distinctive theme I see developing that I am not really happy about.

Cassie Scot lives in a society made up of magical and non-magical all trying to co-exist in one small town. Cassie comes from a very powerful magical family made up of her parents and her 6 brothers and sisters. Of the seven of the siblings, Cassie is the only one who has no magic. Her family's biggest rival and worst enemy is the Blackwood family. Something happened between Cassie's father and Victor Blackwood in the past that each family considers to be completely unforgivable.
To make matters worse, Cassie's love interest is Evan Blackwood, the only son of her father's worst enemy.

Cassie is just trying to find her place in this world. Coming from a very powerful magic family, she is not completely accepted by non-magical society but having no power of her own makes her what she considers a useless disappointment to her own family. She doesn't really seem to fit in anywhere. Despite the fact that she has no magic of her own, she is very desirable as a mate to those families seeking power, as she will likely still be able to bear magically gifted children. This makes her a target, and it makes it necessary for her to be protected. Her family, believing in the magical properties of the number 7, disowned her in the first book after her mother discovered she was pregnant again. They try to pass her off to her Uncle for her own protection, whom it is vaguely mentioned thinks a good idea would be to marry her into another magical family, protection problem solved.

This is the irritating theme I am talking about. Women being married into families as broodmares is just the start of it. There also seems to be quite a few women in need of rescue. This is due to the fact that it is possible for one magic user to completely drain the magic of another magic user and absorb it himself. The only references of this in this series seem to be against women. After their magic is gone, the women are still useful as brood mares and are often actually sold to power- hungry families. This sets up the book for many "good" hero magic-wielding men to save the helpless women. To me it's irritating because it's kind of a damsel in distress cliche and one that doesn't seem to fit into a modern society. I probably wouldn't be so irritated about it if I had read of one scenario where it was women doing this to men. That probably sounded awful, but I read super-natural books because the use of magic would seem to logically be something that would even the playing field a bit between men and women. So if this was something awful being done to both sexes, by both sexes it would just be another form of evil. I don't see why there couldn't be a group of power hungry women kidnapping men, draining and stealing their powers and then selling them off for stud service. As it is, though, it really just sets up the scene for some spin-off books featuring the rescue of female side characters I have grown to like by male side characters I have grown to like.

There is also the issue of magical debt. This is very important in this world. There are references to it in the first book with no explanation which I found to be very frustrating. It is explained here and it's significant and one cannot simply decide to hold another free from a debt that is owed. A debt such as the saving of a life, or a rescue and as I've stated previously, it's the women always in need of being rescued.

That being said, I don't hate the series. I think Cassie actually kind of saves this series for me. I like the fact that she has prevailed in this magic-ruled society despite what her parents did and despite everything that is stacked against her. She is trained in law enforcement but temporarily gave it up because she experienced first hand that the powerful magic using families are pretty much above the law, no matter how busted they are or how clearly guilty. How do you lock up someone who can become invisible or change the basic make-up of metal? By the end of this book she is back with the sheriff's department where she can continue to try to do some good.

I really did like Evan as a love interest all through this book until the very end where I thought he displayed a lack of backbone, temporary as that might be. There is also a big reveal regarding the reason Cassie has no magic. A few instances of insight into what Evan's thought process was like when he found out also made me think he displayed weak (once again if temporary) character traits. Cassie has no idea about any of it.

I like this enough to continue if for nothing more than to see how it all ends and if Cassie and Evan and their families can put aside their differences. I also would really like it see Cassie prevail in her career and develop as a character.

Disclosure: I received a review copy from the author in exchange for a honest review.

Secret and Lies is the second book in Amsden’s spellbinding Cassie Scot series. Secrets and Lies take place exactly where the first book left off, with no amount of time passing. Cassie comes from one of Eagle Rock most powerful and prominent family of sorcerers, but is the only one in a family of seven kids without magic. In the last book, Cassie was disowned by her family and was left to fend for herself without her family’s protection in a town full of magical beings; who all want Cassie for their own nefarious reasons. Cassie has estranged herself from her family since they disowned her, living off her friend’s couch and catching a waitressing gig at a diner in town. However, waitressing turns out to be a bust when Victor Blackwood and her father get her fired on her first day. To make some sort of money, Cassie reluctantly accepts a PI job involving both her family and the Blackwood’s missing cousins. No matter how much Cassie tries to ignore her family and distance herself from anything paranormal…Cassie still finds herself smack dab in the middle of all the chaos.

Similar to the first book, this book has a main mystery that Cassie has to solve which involves two powerful families’ children. Since Cassie isn’t around her family much, readers don’t get much page times with Cassie’s eccentric siblings/family except her brother Nicolas and occasionally her father. While that was somewhat disappointing, we did get to see more of Evan and Cassie’s relationship as they try to figure out what is real and not real with Cassie’s debut to Evan hangs over their head (she owes him for saving her life). Cassie and Evan are like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, with families that despises one another. I love the little flashback scene of when Cassie and Evan first met in grade school…they had each other’s back from the start even when their family discouraged them from befriending one another. I really think Evan and Cassie are made for each other, and their chemistry in Secrets and Lies definitely shows it. Although, there were some annoying moments with Cassie where she was sure she was in love with Evan one second, and in the next moment she pushes him away. I did not like it when Cassie flip-flopped back and forth with her feelings. In the end she did make up her mind and realized what she really wanted but it was a little too late.

What I enjoy most about this series so far is the perfect balance of magic in a yet realistic contemporary setting and the characters. All the characters that populate Cassie’s world (including Cassie) are mostly magical; whether they’re a sorcerer, witch, vampire, werewolf, or fey they’re all realistic and very relatable. They go through the same thing any normal person would go through and have the same aspiration as the next person. Take our main heroine Cassie for example, she’s in her early 20’s and is trying to figure out her place in the world. She has family problems, man problems, job problems, and financial problems…which are in my opinion relatable to anyone of any age. Not only is Cassie relatable but she is also very strong and independent. Cassie may be lacking in the magical department but she makes it up in brains and determination. She never once felt sorry for herself or made any excuses for not having magic, she does everything to the best of her abilities and is a fighter till the end.

Bottom line, Secrets and Lies was an excellent sequel that is even better than the first book in my opinion. No sophomore slump here people. Amsden is a very talent writer that knows how to captivate readers from the first page and keeps them sticking around with realistic and relatable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I can’t wait to see where Amsden takes this series, especially with the shocking ending that will surely be a big game changer in the third book, Mind Games. This is a fantastic series that everyone needs to read! I am not kidding, if you haven’t read this series you’re really missing out. The Cassie Scot series has unquestionably solidified itself among my favorites. If you’re a fan of the Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews, October Daye series by Seanan Mcguire, or Arcadia Bell series by Jenn Bennett…to name a few…then look no further for your next favorite series here!

This leads her to want to prove to her family, as well as the town, that she is capable of living a life outside of sorcery.

This book starts right where "Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective" left off, with Cassie and Evan bound together in an awkward situation that I won't go into too much detail due to spoiler reasons in case you haven't read the first book yet (which you should, it's great!). Let's just say that events at the end of book one made their relationship even more complicated than it already was.
Does this mean that you have to read the first book to enjoy this one? Not necessarily. The author, Christine Amsden, does a great job of giving the reader the need to know summary of what happened before this book started, making sure that new audiences aren't lost. However, I do recommend reading the first one so you get that more in depth back story, and it's a good read.

In my review of the first Cassie Scot book, I remarked that the detective story took the main spotlight while the relationship between Cassie and Evan played around in the background and it seems that the reverse is true for this book. The main mystery in this story is finding out what happened to two girls, (who happen to be distant cousins of both Cassie’s and Evan's families) who disappeared from camp, and Cassie and Evan are put to the case by their fathers.

The missing girls didn't read as big of a priority as the mystery in the first book, as Cassie's personal life is in an upheaval. Which is understandable, and as a reader, I didn't fault Amsden for how much time she spent writing about Cassie and Evan and their unusual predicament. I actually think that it would have seemed forced if the missing girls played a bigger role; given everything else that was personally going on for Cassie.

We also get a lot more of Evan in this book, which I liked. The first book ended with an epilogue in his point of view, and this one had both the prologue and epilogue in Evan's perspective. This gave the reader more insight into how Evan ticks and what he really feels for Cassie, since we are never really sure while we're stuck in her head and she constantly doubts his intentions.

One of my favorite parts of this book was actually a flashback about how Cassie and Evan met in grade school. It showed that even at a young age, the two of them had each other's backs, and felt the need to protect one another. That one childhood moment showed me that these two were always destined to be there for the other one, and even their feuding families couldn't get in the way.

I think one of the reasons why I like this series so much is because Cassie is such a great character. She's actually real. Yes, she's from a paranormal family of sorcerers, who turn lead into gold for a living, and her maybe-he-is-maybe-he's-not-boyfriend is crazy powerful, but she doesn't rely on all of that to get by.

In fact, she goes out of her way to do things her own "normal" way. She doesn't have healing powers, and can't throw fireballs, or even move things around with her mind, but she's smart. She gets into these mysteries that always end up being supernatural in nature, and she uses her brain to get out of them.

So many other books that deal with paranormal romance between a supernatural and a normal would have the supernatural sweep in and rescue the damsel in distress every time, but Cassie doesn't need a sorcerer in shining armor. All she needs is a plan, or some quick thinking, and she's good to go. It's a refreshing change of pace, and I can't wait for the next book to come out. Seriously. I need it right now, please.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour in exchange for a fair and honest review. I rated it 4.5 out of 5 Stars.

Set in a fictional small town in Southern, Missouri, Secrets and Lies, the second book in the Cassie Scot series by Christine Amsden, picks up shortly after the events taking place in Cassie Scot: Paranormal Detective. Cassie, still lacking in magical abilities, and now without “protection” due to being disowned by her parents, is trying to put her life back together. Meanwhile her town, which was once a paranormal safe haven, is struggling as the two most powerful magical families in the area carry on their private feud and continue acting like the Capulets and Montagues in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Which of course means Cassie is Juliet, and Evan Blackwood, the young scion of his family and formerly Cassie’s friend, is her Romeo.

Determined to make it on her own, as a human, Cassie has turned down Evan Blackwood’s offer for marriage but still owes him for saving her life. Even though Evan now realizes his mistake, offering to cancel the life debt if Cassie would just marry him, he’s still wants her in his life and makes it clear to everyone in town that whether she wants it or not, Cassie’s under his protection. Meanwhile Cassie has to find a job, since she’s determined not to accept her family’s attempts to support her, and she and Evan soon find themselves involved in trying to locate two girls missing from summer camp, that just happen to be distantly related to both of their families.

Ms. Amsden does a terrific job continuing to develop both Cassie and Evan’s characters as this series continues. While Cassie has genuine feelings, and a real attraction to Evan, she no longer trusts herself or her emotions because of the “debt” she owes Evan. It also doesn’t help matters when it appears he has a “strange, magical” pull on her emotions. Meanwhile, Evan, burdened with almost too much magical ability, is trying to win the girl he desires but has to take things more slowly than he would like. He has to be really careful of crossing the line between the “normal” behavior of a human man and the “magical” behavior of a powerful warlock. I really like how the relationship between Cassie and Evan goes back and forth as they try to solve the mystery of the missing girls and it’s clear to me that without the “magical debt”, and their family’s interference, Cassie and Evan would make a terrific couple on their own.

The secondary characters get a touch more attention in this story, and we learn more about the “feud” going on between their families. It’s a feud that has been going on for all of Cassie and Evan’s life and which has had some “unforeseen” consequences. It’s also dragged their town into the middle, with both magical and non-magical “victims”. In a way, both Cassie and Evan’s fathers are the silent “villains” of the book because of their refusal to let the feud die down and continuing to push and pull their children. Adding an additional touch of magical interference, some of the other practitioners in town add pressure with “prophesies” and “foretellings” of doom if Cassie and Evan ever really do come together.

Will Cassie and Evan locate the missing girls? Will Cassie and Evan’s relationship survive having to work together when Cassie isn’t sure she can trust Evan? And will Cassie want to help her family pull it together now that she’s on the outside? You’ll have to read Secrets and Lies to find out. I loved this addition to the series and can’t wait to see what Ms. Amsden does with these characters next. If you like paranormal romance, this is a series you’ll want to add to your library – just make sure to read the books in order as each book builds on the previous story.

I received a copy of this book from the author for review. This did in no way affect my review. Promise!

I read the first Cassie Scot book as a part of a blog tour in the past year and fell in love with this detective. Her personality and self-imposed role as the only 'normal' one in the family made me laugh from the first page. When I was offered the opportunity to read the next installment of Cassie's journey, I jumped at the chance! Here's why:

THE CHARACTERS
Cassie is one of those characters that it is impossible to not fall in love with. She has this simple nature, one that sees the world in black and white (something that has been really stressed with her recent problems with her family), but only certain things are colored in greys. I loved her narration - she was funny, witty, and a bit unreliable as a narrator when it came to her personal life. (More on that later.)

Even though she (and some others) sees herself as quite ordinary, her observational and critical skills make her a unique asset as a detective. I loved watching her mind at work, taking the magical expertise she's gained form growing up in a house full of sorcerers and using it to hunt down two missing girls.

As smart as Cassie is, she is oblivious when it comes to Evan. She and Evan have a complicated relationship to say the least (more here - beware, this post contains spoilers to the first book!). I loved watching the highs and lows of their relationship - Amsden definitely picked up from there the first novel left off! Evan reminds me of a bit of Edward Cullen - he has that same sort of protectiveness over Cassie, but it has a sweeter, softer side since the narration occasionally switches from Cassie's perspective to his.

THE PLOT
The tensions from Evan and Cassie's relationship provides the thread that holds the entire novel together. To be honest, there's a lot going on, and Amsden weaves the plot together seamlessly with their romance. I loved how it tied together Cassie's family problems, the war between the magical bloodlines, and the search for the missing girls, all the while giving attention to the main romance.

Secrets and Lies focuses on themes of acceptance and forgiveness, but not the traditional way. Instead of tying off each and every plot element neatly, Amsden leaves a little room for these themes to transition into the next novel. Cassie's problems aren't solved; she's just learning how to forgive.

THE WRITING
This world has the charm of a small town mixed with the dangers of magic and sorcery. I couldn't get enough of it, from the Main Street Cafe to the small bank. Cassie's world was so engaging that it was impossible for me to put this book down; I read the entire thing in one sitting.

I loved how the novel included the side stories from the entire cast of characters, not just Evan and Cassie. It gave the novel a more well-rounded and engrossing feel, like I was slipping into Cassie's mind, not just her story.

FINAL THOUGHTS
This one's a love for me. From the first page with Evan's narration then Cassie, I knew I was hooked. There are so many emotions and different stories swirling within these pages that it's impossible not to fall in love.

My review of Book 1 can be found here: http://saphsbookblog.blogspot.com/201...

Secrets and Lies is the next installment in the Cassie Scot series by Christine Amsden.

Please note:
There will most likely be Book 1 spoilers.

Cassie is still trying to accept that her parents have disowned her and she owes a life debt to Evan. She can't fathom the idea of seeing either of her former-parents, which has unfortunate affects on her siblings. Cassie's obligations to Evan have her so tied up in knots that she can't see straight. And her getting a job? Good luck with that. The entire town seems to know that Cassie is unprotected (most are unaware of her debt to Evan) and stalk her like fresh meat.

When two teenage girls, one from her family tree and one from Evan's family tree, representatives from both families seek Cassie out to help locate them. This is a good way to keep her from going completely crazy. She's been having a hard time dealing with the fact that those around her can't seem to understand that she's independent and able to take care of herself - even without magic. Here's where Cassie is wrong and she learns the hard way.

There is something going on at the summer camp where the two teenagers went missing. It's up to Evan's family and Cassie's family (mortal enemies) to try and figure out who is behind the disappearances and why. Be ready to understand just how true the title of Book 2 is: Secrets and Lies - this book is full of them in ways your would never imagine.

The last two paragraphs (changed up a bit) of my review of Book 1 fit right along with Book 2:

Secrets and Lies is straight up one of the absolute best mystery books I've read. There are multiple story lines that keep the reader completely engaged from the start. There are twists and turns that keep the reader guessing about the who-dun-it parts. There is a sort-of love triangle from Book 1 that continues on in Secrets and Lies and pretty much boils things down to the same question "If you question whether or not you truly love someone, chances are that you don't."

The author did an excellent job writing the entire novel. The dialogue was fluid and smooth and all of the characters were likable in their own way - even the bad/evil/mean ones. There was more back story and history (especially about Cassie's mother) given in the right increments; not too much, not too little. Cassie's character is very likable - she's strong and competent, figuring out how to take care of and protect herself while unable to manifest anything magical. She's conflicted when it comes to her relationship with Evan. One the one hand, she's known him forever and there is a definite bond; on the other hand, is Evan sticking to the debt Cassie owes for deviousness that may lead to heartbreaking consequences? The author has written characters that have deep layers and are emotional.

I highly recommend this series!

I absolutely could not put this book down!!!

Original review here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2013/11/secrets-and-lies-blog-tour-review.html

Secrets and Lies is the sequel to Amsden's Cassie Scot series. This book picks up where book 1 left off. Cassie is now on her own, well, without the help of her parents. After refusing Evan's proposal and her family's last act of charity, Cassie wants to be independent for once. It will be hard, but she will do what she can. So on top of trying to figure out how she will get her next paycheck, she has to figure out how to get out of the debt with Evan. Things are tough, but things become bad when Evan asks her to investigate the disappearance of two young girls at a camp. They aren't sure what they are in for, but it may be bigger than they anticipated.

Amsden has done it again. This series is very hard to put down. I really love the world Amsden has created for us and the characters within it. Cassie is such a great lead. She is very stubborn and strong, but she is always there for people or as much as she can be. Cassie still doesn't have any powers or anything, but for some reason, everyone seems to want her especially men, sorcerers to be exact. She doesn't know why, but she knows it isn't good. I really enjoyed Evan in this book. Everyone in town is still very scared of them and we his family. We even get the chance to meet his father who hates Cassie's father. The feuds between these two are very interesting. We learn quite a bit which I was dying for from the first book. I love how much we learn of this interesting town with each book. We get more of the dads and some other side characters as well especially some of Cassie's friends that have an interesting addition the book. Oh, you have no idea.

This story is fast paced and a lot of fun. Cassie doesn't like the fact that she is indebted to him and that debt means he can control her. She has just been forced to move away from under her parents' roof and doesn't need to be forced into anything else. She needs to find herself first. She knows he won't her, but she doesn't know if he will wait forever before he forces marriage on her. But Cassie and Evan are such an intriguing pair. They are forced to work together when two girls disappear at a camp near town. The girls may have a little magic in them and it seems magic may have been involved. But even though the girls may have been kidnapped, it seems Cassie is the main person the kidnapper wants. I love how well Amsden mixes mystery and paranormal together.

This book gets very intense, both with the crime and with Cassie herself. There are plenty of twists.in this story that will make your head spin. The ending kind of had me screaming. I need more now, right now! I love what we learn about the feud between Evan and Cassie's families. This book is quite the pageturner. You will be so invested in this world. It balances the mystery, laughs, action, magic, and just all around fun beautifully. This story will not disappoint at all. I can't wait for book 3. Again, the ending was crazy. Highly recommended!

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

In ParaNormal Detective we met Cassie Scot who unlike other members of her family she has no magic and needs her family or someone for protection. In ParaNormal Detective Cassie's parents did a disownment spell and kicked her out of the house on the same day. They didn't even give her a chance or the time to find somewhere to live. But luckily Cassie has some very good friends. One of her friends Kaitlin let her stay with her.

Her best friend from school has come back into her life now and she figures out that he likes and wants her. Unfortunately he has magic but she doesn't and she thinks he is controlling her and wants no part of him. But I think she is just hurting from a broken heart you know with her mother and father kicking her out of the house. She is being a little over dramatic about the whole situation but her parents have thrown her out with no warning what so ever. She doesn't know if she can trust him or not. She has feelings for him but she doesn't know if he is making her feel like that or if she really does like him. With Evan having magic rumor has it that he has put love spells on girls for a very long time. This is the reason that Cassie doesn't trust him. She doesn't actually think the rumors are true but she is not sure so she doesn't trust the feelings she has for him.

Evan wants to protect her and so does her family. Evan wants to marry her but she is afraid and she doesn't know what she wants at the moment. She is afraid to trust her own feelings. She is so mixed up. She wants to do everything on her own. She wants to be independent so bad. But what she is going to have to figure out is that sometimes you need the help of another person whether it is mentally or physically.

Cassie and Evan's families are like enemies. They have never gotten along or haven't for a very long time. They can't stand the fact that Cassie and Evan have been friends since childhood. Cassie will not accept any help from her family not even help from her brother. In ways Cassie is a very strong person and is very mature but then in other ways she has some growing to do. Cassie has a good heart and would never hurt anyone knowingly but sometimes when we are hurting we do tend to lash out at the ones we love the most.

I have truly loved reading and getting to know each and every character in the Cassie Scot series and can't wait to read the next book. The ending in Secrets and Lies will throw you for a loop. It will just blow your mind. You will not believe the ending it is amazing. Neither Cassie nor Evan deserves the deal that they have both been dealt in life. If you have not read the Cassie Scot series then I would suggest that you start with ParaNormal Detective first and then Secrets and Lies. I highly recommend the Cassie Scot series to anyone who loves paranormal and witches that also contains a lot of twist and turns plus some mystery and magic thrown in on the side. Pick up a copy of both books today!

My ****4 Star**** Review

First, let me say that this is the second book in the Cassie Scot series. If you haven’t read the first book – STOP HERE!! This book picks up right after the first and will definitely spoil things for you. You can check out my review on the first book HERE.

So, after the big cliffhanger at the first one, things start pretty calmly in book 2. Evan’s father, Victor, and Evan’s best friend/cousin, Scott Lee, both think that Evan should just force Cassie to marry him. Evan on the other hand realizes that he has botched the proposal by making it sound like a command. He wants Cassie to come to him rather than forcing his hand.

Cassie is still quite determined to figure things out for herself. She gets a job at Kaitlin’s Diner, but that job doesn’t last long at all. This leaves Cassie in an even worse predicament, but then it turns out both her family and Evan’s need her. Two teenage girls have gone missing from a summer camp. One is a distant Scot cousin, while the other is a distant Blackwood cousin.

After taking on the case, Sheriff Adams finds he needs her expertise back on the job for an entirely different matter. Oh, and something is very wrong with her family. He mother has become extremely ill among other issues.

Now for my opinion… I’ll start with what I felt was the most improved upon – the mystery. I really enjoyed the cases that Cassie was a part of. The right amount of clues were given to keep you guessing, but not so much that I could figure things out. I’m usually not a mystery person, but I was intrigued!

Okay, so I’m a big sucker for a love story, and you can really feel the love between Cassie and Evan. Cassie will finally admit her feelings for Evan, but there’s something BIG keeping them apart. This BIG something leaves you with another whopper of a cliffhanger, and now I’m left freaking out about the finish!! Too bad I can’t say more here – you’ll just have to read it!!

So, if you enjoyed the first story, I definitely think you’ll enjoy this one. The mystery was even better in this second book. What makes this a 4 star rather than a 5 star for me? Well, a 5 star for me is something the touches me in such a strong way, the it just won’t leave me. The one thing that was missing for me that would have boosted this on up there was emotions. Now don’t get me wrong, I laughed, I felt scared, there were times I felt my heart melting, and others I felt my heart breaking. The story definitely evoked emotions in me! But, it just isn’t one of those stories that evokes extreme emotions. Just for the record, I don’t think every story should. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I can’t come up with anything I’d change. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!! There are four books to this series, and they have all been written. Christine hopes to have all four out by next summer. We can also expect a spin-off on Madison. If we’re lucky we’ll get one on Kaitlin, too!

This one nudged over the four-and-a-half-star threshold because of a moment near the end which made me say "Yes!" aloud and pump my fist on behalf of the protagonist.

Cassie Scot is more than worthy to stand beside Kitty Norville, Joanne Walker or Mercy Thompson in the urban fantasy genre. She's smart. In fact, she's primarily smart. She doesn't have any supernatural advantage going on, and is surrounded by people who do. She isn't big and strong and kickass; she's been a sherrif's deputy and can handle herself, but she's an average-sized young woman without any unusual physical prowess, and when it all goes down, what she can do physically against much stronger opponents is not what's going to tip the balance. She has to be smart in order to survive.

She does more than survive. She triumphs. Not that everything is all rosy at the end of the book; far from it. The immediate problem is resolved, yes, but the one that carries on in an arc throughout the series is very much not. (That's the way to write a series, if anyone was wondering.)

You do need to start from the first book. There's not much in the way of recap to remind you who these people are and why they're all fighting, and the situation at the start of this book is set up in Book 1.

It's a heck of a situation, though. Cassie owes her childhood friend/teenage crush/son of her father's greatest enemy a life debt, which gives him power over her - the kind of power which means she's magically compelled to obey his orders. The problem is that she's an independent-minded young woman, and while she would like a relationship with him, she's not prepared to have one in which he has all the power.

This is great. It's the start of a theme of the exploitation of women as chattels which gets developed from multiple different angles throughout the book. The magical community has held on to 19th-century thinking into the 21st century, and Cassie is having none of it. It's an excellent theme, the more so because of the multi-angled exploration and the way in which it's both a matter of principle and also deeply personal to the protagonist (and not just in her own situation).

My favourite kind of protagonist takes personal risks, accepts personal costs and overcomes their own limitations in order to act decisively and effectively, out of principle, in a worthy cause, which also has personal significance involving those they love. In this book, Cassie Scot ticks every one of those boxes, which is why I cheered for her.

I'm delighted to hear that the remaining two books in the series are already written. They can't come fast enough for me.

(I received an electronic advanced reader copy of the book from the author for purposes of honest review.)

Check out my other listens at Eargasms Audiobook Reviews

This is book two in the Cassie Scott series and it picks up where the first left off. Cassie is still dealing with the disowning by her family and Evan's power over her.

There are many levels to this book, Cassie's need for independence, the relationship with Evan, a little side romance hint, two mysteries to solve and loads of backstories to reveal. The book really keeps ya hopping, in a good way. It is never really over whelming and the pace is very well done.

I really like the mysteries in these books, they are very involved and keep me on edge. This one is mostly about two missing teens who have connections to both Cassie and Evan's families. Again, a lot going on but not impossible to follow. I prefer the moments when Cassie is being a detective and not wallowing.

I do get a touch annoyed with Cassie and all her self pity and doubts. But I just have to remind myself she is 21, and that is typical of the age. She has to workout all that leftover teen angst. It really plays into her interactions with everybody around her. This isn't a major issue, and not really solvable because it is an age thing. She needs more years to really mature and gain wisdom. So, I will forgive her the growing pains.

I am also torn on the relationship with Evan, they really do love each other, but need to seriously work on communication!! This is another place where age and wisdom come into play. I just have to keep reminding myself they are only Twenty-one.

I am very intrigues by a potential romance between two supporting characters, I really hope we get more of that or a spinoff!! I love me a possessive Alpha wolf, especially when it comes to a mate thing!!

This is more of a clean read, some steamy kisses but not much more. Okay, some steamy groping too but no full on smexy action.

I love the opening and ending on Evan's POV, 90% of the book is Cassie's POV, the switch up really helps give insight into Evan. This is imperative as you might find him cold otherwise.

I listened to the audio book, the narrator Melissa Reizian Frank is terrific!!! She had great voices and characterization a that were easy to identify. She drew you more into the story and had you by the heart at emotional moments! I am definitely putting her on my listen list!!

Warning, this book is going to drop dome serious bombs on you in the end!! I am talking some serious WTF!!! My jaw hit the floor, even though I suspected something. I am on pins and needles waiting on the next book, it can not come fast enough!!

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.

4.5 stars

"Secrets and Lies" picks up where book 1 ends. Cassie is trying to come to terms with her family problems, make a life of her own, and hoping to distance herself from Evan. There is a new mystery to solve and tons of family drama that needs to be resolved. Cassie and Evan team up once again. This time they are trying to find two girls and solve the mystery of their disappearance. They discover way more than they bargained for and learn more about each other in the process.

The Cover: Since I commented on the cover in my review of book 1 I want to do the same for book 2. I like this cover better than the first one. It still seems a little too bright for this genre but I do like that it has more of an adult feel to it than book 1. I also read a guest post by the author that went into how the covers were made and it helped me to appreciate them a little more. You can read that post here on Long and Short Reviews Site.

The Main Character: I still love Cassie and Evan. Cassie is becoming more independent and trying to come to terms with not being part of her family. I feel like she grows a lot in book 2 and really gets a taste of the real world. She is so loyal but is heartbroken about the decisions her family has made. I really love the care and concern that is part of the family dynamics in this story.

The Mystery: The mystery part of this book is just as strong as the one in book 1 and I loved that I incorrectly guessed the bad guy not just once but twice.

The Romance: I confess…I want a happy ending for Cassie and Evan but it definitely didn’t happen in book 2. I am hoping book 3 will see them through their problems. There is a twist in their romance that left me shouting “no, no, no” at my iPad. Of course I can’t tell you what it is but my heart broke for Evan. However, I believe that love will prevail and in the end these two end up together. If not then I am going to need a separate version written just for me. There are also some other characters that seem to be on the fringes of making a love connection so I’m anxious to see how those relationships develop as well.

To Summarize: I really like this series. The author does a fantastic job of combining genres into a book that is interesting and entertaining. I love that the author allows the mystery to carry the story with the romance serving as a backdrop and then weaves in unique paranormal elements along with an interesting family drama. This is a series that you can enjoy and connect with. I’m looking forward to reading book 3, Mind Games in April or March of this year.

Okay I have to say this first. My plea and begging to ms. Amsden. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I NEED I WANT I HAVE TO HAVE EVAN AND CASSIE END UP TOGETHER AND i ALSO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NEED THE NEXT BOOK SOON.

Ms. Amsden does it again with the emotional rollercoaster and adventure into the world of witches and magic. The secrets that come out are incredible and ones I never would have guessed. Her writing style is one that entrances you into the story and gets you involved. Evan is my new book boyfriend. Jason was and the revelation at the end wowza. I hope it isn’t true. He was fabulous.

Evan is still battling himself and everyone else. The worst is he is battling Cassie. Not Cassie herself but Cassie’s inner turmoil over her feelings for Evan. At times she is cruel in how she is towards Evan. I mean you want to slap some sense in her cruel. But he peters on unwaveringly and devoted to her. She is the only one that hasn’t seen he is and always has been smitten for her. And as the case heats up so do their feelings and relationship.

The usual ragtag characters are there and are as funny as ever. They deal with some serious issues and in a light hearted manner at times but in a way that doesn’t leave you emotionally spent. It’s the secrets and Evan’s decision in the end that will put your emotions on the spin cycle. I mean he is being so gosh darn honourable but dang it stop I want you two together.. Cassie knows there is something that causes him to be the way he is and she better find out.

The question is who is telling the truth? Her mom to Cassie or the dad (who is a douche and terd) to Evan? Or are both correct? I don’t know but I hope Cassie figures it out.

Her and Evan’s dad are total douches and so do not deserve any respect. At least Evan’s dad though is trying to accept the situation her dad is just being a mean and horrible.

Nicholas is so funny and when he realizes things it is wonderful to see. He begins to grow up in this book. As does all of Cassie’s family. They realize what Cassie means to them. Too bad it takes losing her to realize this. Some act cold to her and that is sad to see.

The case is another fun adventure that yet again leaves Cassie having to deal with the paranormal when she is trying to be normal. Such a adventure is to be had in this book in more ways than one. All the revealing that occurs is amazing but not enough to help bridge gaps and get trust again.

A wonderful read that will surely have you wanting more. Again PLEASE PLEASE MAY I HAVE EVAN AND CASSIE FIND THEIR WAY TOGETHER AGAIN OH AND THE NEXT BOOK SOON WOULD BE A WONDERFUL THING TO PLEASE. THANK YOU.

I received this book from the author as a First Reads winnner

This review contains spoilers and I apologize if it is not well written. I'm not so good at focusing thoughts in my head onto paper.

This book was engrossing and easy to read. The story line flowed smoothly and it kept me very involved trying to figure out who was doing what.

It starts out with Scott and Victor stating that Evan should call in the life debt by ordering Cassie to marry him. Evan is in love with her and wants her honorably. Cassie is in a bit of a depression since she has been cast out of her parents home and is trying to find her way.

She is forced to work with Evan when they each have a distant cousin go missing. While some of the plot points were a bit obvious (the references to the bottle of water made it obvious that something was off with the water) the whole kidnapping scenario was well done. The girls have gone missing and they are trying to track them down but they are being shielded by a very powerful sorcerer so they are unable to locate them.

Cassie's friends are both in trouble as well. Madison is being stalked by the Travis's and we find out she is a songbird. Kaitlyn is pregnant from a one night stand and the baby is magical.

Watching Cassie and Evan learn to trust each other and having Cassie own up to her feelings about Evan felt very natural. The underlying life debt and the addictive quality of Evan's kisses makes it hard for him to know if its true but Cassie is sure of it and her feelings for him.

When Cassie and her mom were in each others minds, I thought that was well written and very emotional. I couldn't believe what had happened to her mom and her sisters and I am glad that Cassie was able to forgive her mom.

Breaking through the illusion and rescuing the girls was done because of Cassie and I was really proud of how she handled everything and how she was quick on her feet to think up a way to take down Hank when all her protection was out of commission.

The cliff hanger ending about Evan probably having Cassie's magic from the moment they were born and how he sent her away has me anxious for the next installment of this book. I am also dying to know what is up with Victor and Edward. Why do they hate each other so much and why did he owe a debt? How did Cassie's magic end up with Evan? So many questions and I hope the next book is able to answer them.

Very good book and a great continuation of the series. Thanks Christine for the book and for the great story of Cassie Scot.

This story takes off with a bang and never lets up.

Struggling to make it on her own, Cassie latches onto a case of two missing girls. Evan works with her, worried about her safety. Sorcerers can’t find these girls with their powers, which means something paranormal is afoot, something strong.

Cassie now owes a blood debt to Evan after he saved her life. He wants Cassie. She’s unsure of her feelings. She did kiss him and his kisses have the power to make her swoon. Is it the magic or is she falling for him?

As they team up to search for the missing girls, their attraction intensifies. Things are further complicated by Cassie’s anger and hurt over something her parents did. Now the family is in chaos and Cassie doesn’t know if she can find it in herself to forgive them.

Danger is all around. No one can be trusted. Lives are in peril.

What a rush. There is so much happening.

I felt for Cassie. Imagine worrying about whether you’ll be given a choice or be forced to marry someone. On top of that, your family betrays you, you need money, and the case you take is turning out to be extremely dangerous.

Sometimes, when I start the second book in a series, I worry that it won’t be as good. Like a sequel in a movie.

My worries were null as soon as I started Secrets and Lies.

The back and froth between Cassie and Evan at turns kept me anxious, hopeful, and merry. These two are meant for each other.

I got to know these two a lot better and also got to understand the motivation behind their families.

As with the first book, there was a lot going on. I liked that. The author made it easy to follow along. I never stumbled over who was doing what. And the humor lightened the mood when things got heavy. Which they did.

The best thing for me was that the author kept to her character in Cassie. I didn’t want a flashy change, no sudden powers emerging. I do wonder about her though. There were times I thought I glimpsed something.

Secrets and Lies felt darker than the first book. There were some intense scenes, and some emotional moments when secrets were revealed.

Many things get resolved at the end. But there’s still more questions, more to come.

One more thing about the ending. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe what I read. I’m so glad the next book will be releasing this year.

I received this book for my honest review.

Cassie Scot's life will never be normal. She's learned that lesson to the fullest, and is now doing her best to come to terms with everything she's gone through. She's still smarting from the fact that her parents disowned her. While she doesn't quite know what brought them to that decision, she sort of understands their plight. She's different, always has been, and she will never be magical enough for their tastes.

When a new ordeal surfaces, Cassie is forced to work with Evan once again in getting to the bottom of things. She doesn't really want to. He's become a thorn in her side, after all. Unfortunately, if she's going to try and make something of herself, she's going to need to set aside her differences for the time being. Determined to find the missing girls, she and Evan dive head-first into the heart of matter. They've encountered opposition in the past, and they know this time won't be any different. Never-the-less, they're going to do everything possible to bring the girls home.

Looking at the case from every possible angle, Cassie soon realizes things are not as clear cut as they seem. Someone is out to make a statement, and they're using the girls as a means to make it. The unidentified magic user has a game to play, and Cassie's the main target. Why, she doesn't know, but she's going to do everything possible to find out. Even if it means she'll need to resort to using unconventional methods in order to do so before anything out of the norm happens yet again.

Another great addition to this series! The story picks up where the first book left off, dropping you smack-dab in the middle of Cassie's next dilemma. Her feelings for Evan haven't diminished. They've intensified, something she refuses to admit. Christine has done a great job in adding more twists and turns to the story that definitely leaves you craving more of Cassie and Evan.

While most of her family get less screen time than they did in book one, it's certainly endearing to see those that do appear try their best to make things work with Cassie. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what comes next for her and Evan. Will there finally be a resolution to their dilemma? Or will someone be hung out to dry when the time comes, I wonder?

My Review
5 Roses

In the first book of this series, we found magic, mystery, danger, and vampires. Well, take out the vamps, add a werewolf, up the danger, and you've got a good idea of this sequel.

This book starts off right where the first one ended. With Cassie's family relationships strained, and her romantic life complicated beyond sanity, her world feels even more out of control than ever. Taking a case with Evan sets events in motion that cause even more danger, mysteries, and swirling confusion to surround her.

This book is just as good as the first one, although it did have me much more worried, mainly for Cassie's well-being. She is fiercely independent and stubborn, and dare I say, overly prideful. Because of this, she ends up causing herself some grief and headaches she didn't need. Throughout the book, I kept thinking "Girl, slow down, stop assuming, and just talk to Evan!" The roller-coaster that is their relationship is nerve-wracking, and in the end, left me completely shocked.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I desperately hope there's a third part to this series. It is written just as well as the first, with maybe a slightly faster pace, and the same honest humor as the first book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, danger, magic, or romance.

I really enjoyed the first book in Christine Amsden's Cassie Scot series and was excited to read the next instalment Secrets and Lies. It's difficult to review book 2 without mentioning the events in the first book so if you haven't read Paranormal Detective then be warned!

The story picks up right after the events of Paranormal Detective with Evan sorta owning Cassie and her trying to deny any feelings for him. Cassie's avoiding her family and is trying to find her place in the world; she's the only non-magical from a family of powerful sorcerers.

A lot of the story focuses on Cassie as she tries to come to terms with previous events and to find out where she goes from here. Evan hires Cassie to assist him in finding two missing girls - I thought this was all an excuse for Evan to try to woo her but as events unfold we learn there is so much more going on.

I really wish Cassie and Evan would get their act together but this is extremely difficult when their families hate each other and keep a lot of secrets from their children. I like how driven Evan is and how he does have a dark side; underneath everything he's extremely powerful and dangerous. Evan tries hard to be worthy but he's not always entirely honourable BUT I think this adds to his mystique.

I hated Cassie's parents at then end of the last book and I honestly cannot decide how I feel about them now. Her Dad is definitely not my favourite person and don't get me started on Evan's father!

I really like this series (although I'm not a big fan of the book covers) and find Cassie a charming mix of vulnerable and naive yet strong and spirited. I have my suspicions about certain characters *ahem* Madison, but I'm hoping we get to see Cassie and Evan have a HEA without the dreaded love triangle or a friend becoming-enemy-and-trying-to-steal-your-man kinda deal!

What the heck did I just read? How did this book get so highly rated? The writing was repetitive, how many times did i read "my father, make that former father"? Too many times, the reader gets it already! And suddenly Cassie starts talking directly to the reader about some magic info. There is too much detail about stuff I didn't care about (everything ordered for lunch at MickeyDs, like I care if they ate salad, and fruit, and yogurt). And this book has a big pet peeve of mine: no one talks things out, they just make assumptions of what the others are thinking all through the book!! Cassie regressed. Oh my goodness she was an annoying, selfish, judgemental idiot. Examples: her friend who took her in can't pay the bills, is in danger of having her utilities cut off and no food money. But Cassie won't take money from her parents even though she has no job. I understand pride but this is ridiculous. She won't go visit her siblings who she supposedly loves even though she's told they are having serious problems and miss her. She wouldn't go see her mother And her relationship with Evan is ridiculous (random thoughts: he's never hurt me, he only wants me cause of the debt, but I want to kiss him, but I want to get far away from him). And she talks about her friend having dysfunctional relationships? Pot / Kettle. And Evan, just as awful. He's convinced he loves her but has never indicated anything to her along these lines. He almost He's going to protect her but he's her biggest threat. And the ending epilogue shows how selfish he is. His version of love isn't the self-sacrifing kind that's for sure. I had no sympathy for him. At this point I don't want to read book three but it's like a train wreck. I'm thinking to myself could book three get any worse?

“Secrets and Lies” by Christine Amsden is the second book in the ‘Cassie Scot’ series and continues immediately after the momentous events in the first book. Cassie is still reeling from the actions of her parents and the obligations she owes Evan Blackwood even as she struggles to find a way to support herself. An investigation into the disappearance of two girls who have ties to the Scot and Blackwood families forces Cassie to work with Evan despite her misgivings about not belonging to either the magical or the normal world around her. The hostility between the two families have only escalated due to Cassie’s circumstances and her relationship with Evan is even more tortuous than ever. Unfortunately, Cassie discovers that the secrets surrounding the missing girls are not the only ones she needs to uncover and she may never recover from the shock of her discoveries.

This young adult paranormal tale is best read after the first in the series so that one has the full background on certain extreme changes in the heroine’s life. There is a wonderful combination of mystery and magic in this tale mixed with a variety of tangled life choices that complicate the actions of many of the individuals in Cassie’s life. There are explanations for certain behaviors but I am not totally convinced that they provide sufficient justifications for apparently irrational decisions. There is again a surprising development at the very end of the story which will definitely whet one’s appetite for the next book in the series. I particularly enjoyed the new twist on the “kiss and frog” relationship which reflects this author’s sly humor that is demonstrated in many of Cassie’s solutions for her problems and I look forward to learning more about the remarkable people who populate the unusual town of Eagle Rock.
