The Kings #4

The Goblin King

Rate this book
Damon Chroi has known the weight of ruling in loneliness for thousands of years. The tall, painfully handsome fae lord was born with so much power, the fae kings not only envied but feared him, and banished him to a forbidden realm to be forgotten. There, he was tasked with ruling over the deadliest creatures known to the fae worlds, and his veritable battle as their sovereign is never-ending. As one of the 13 Kings, his destiny foretells an end to his solitude with the appearance of an equally powerful queen. But that kind of power is hard to come by. And power or not, Damon can’t imagine any woman willingly joining him in the eternal misery to which he has been tasked.

Until he meets the beautiful, strong and selfless Diana Piper.

Diana has been hiding a potent secret from the world for decades. She was born with abilities others would fight to win, and kill to keep. To make matters worse, she is a sensitive soul who, despite the danger it poses to herself, uses these powers to make the world a better place. Forever in harm’s way, overworked and head strong, Diana one night comes across the ultimate challenge in the form of a wayward fae beast – and in the process, crosses paths with its indomitable king. A light can only shine in the darkness so long before someone takes note of it. And Diana not only manages to gain the instant attentions of Damon Chroi… but of those who would do anything to see him – and the other 13 Kings – dead.

Fantabulous narration by Antony Ferguson! He's new to me. 5-star performance, IMO, but only 3.75 stars for the story, rounded up for the delightful narration.

The illustration shows a chess board. This excerpt explains the image: "The 13 Kings are destined to meet thirteen very special women,” Damon said. “These women will become our queens. And just as they are on a chess board, each queen will become even more powerful than her husband."

So, there will be 13 queens, more powerful than their kings, banding together to fight the emerging dark power that is only obscure in this book. Apparently, more sequels will be forthcoming, to better frame the threat. The author better get her story said soon; this is already book 4 and the big bad is too elusive. I hope there won't be 13 books in this series. That would get boring.

I jumped into the middle of the series, because I have a thing for goblins. This plot isn't as suspenseful, nor as grim-dark, nor as engrossing as Dunkle created in her goblin king romantic adventure for young adults, The Hollow Kingdom. (I loved that book!) But this book is still fairly engrossing -- some parts are quite captivating -- and maybe a cut above your average PNR fare.

Contents: One explicit sex scene (not a tender scene), some violence, a handful of religious swear words and other curse words (could do without that). I didn't notice any typos in the e-book that went along with my audiobook.

The writing style is fairly well developed. The dialogue is credible and at times witty. (My Little Pony, etc.) Thankfully, no guilt-tripping, and minimal mental reflection (down time). Nothing special in the romance itself. I didn't feel the love. But still, an entertaining listen, and some parts are engrossing. I liked the fire spirit. The death scene. The healing. The poor Xenobe goblins.

Quibbles: The 3rd person POV bops around far too much. The scene hopping is the biggest problem. It cost the book a full star. Also, I was a little lost in the first few chapters, because of Evie and Ramon, vampire queen and king from a prequel, The Vampire King.

I felt that Ramon the good vampire king and his queen Evie got too much press. The scene with vampire Rafael (Raphael ?) seemed out of context.

The ending wasted my time with a teaser for the next book's queen, as if I had not already guessed. I wanted the epilogue to be set some time in the future -- if only a week ahead -- showing Damon and Diana. These two main characters needed more press.

On the up-side, the vocabulary is fairly diverse; phrases and words are not repeated continually, as occurs in the books written by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

The Goblin King is the 4th installment in the "Kings" series. I will be honest in that I really enjoyed this one, much more than the previous one. I really adored this narration, although, I recommend its one you want to completely focus on it. I did have so much fun with this one though. I really enjoyed the setup of the romance. There is a side plot featuring the vampire king and queen so keep that in mind when you read this one. We also see the trope of fated love. The heroine is a healer in most specifically animals, and she has a warm kind heart. I loved the way that these two come together when her life is in danger. It was much more engaging than I was expecting as well.

Overall I had a blast with this one here, I absolutely adored the way that this story developed and the world-building was penned so well and made me realize what made me fall in love with this series in the first place. Eager to continue on with this series here.

This eagerly awaited book was every bit as good as I hoped. I really, really tried to read it slowly, to savour every delicious moment but unfortunately it was so gripping I raced through it in one day!

The book picks right up where we left off last time and ends in yet another cliff hanger leaving you wanting more already. All my favourite characters were back along with the introduction of some new ones that I just know we're going to hear more of in the future.

Well done Heather on another brilliant book in this series, now hurry up with the next one ;-)

Parts of this were a very good story. But it needed tightening up.

The characters were interesting. I liked the main couple’s interaction. There was a very hot sex scene - had me smiling. There was a purple prose quality. Using excessively sexy/attractive adjectives was fun and campy. For example: Instead of saying he put his arm around her to open the door. It said he put his sculpted arm around her...

But, I marked it down to 3 stars due to disorganization and backtracking. I was very unhappy with jumping around. It was confusing, disorganized and hard to follow. Here’s an example.

Diana interacts with a group of boys. Scene switches to Roman a vampire doing things. Scene switches to a Guy from his POV. He meets a girl, they talk, he’s surprised she can see him since normal humans cannot. (I don’t know the name of this girl.) Scene switches to Roman. Scene switches BACK IN TIME a couple hours to Diana. She meets a Guy, they talk, etc. and I realize it’s repeating the former scene - it was Diana who was the girl that the Guy met. This is the same scene from her POV. (confusing, disorganized, hard to follow). Scene then switches to Ophelia and werewolves. Scene switches back to Diana and the Guy who fight bad guys. Diana’s friend is also in that fight. After the fight, we go BACK IN TIME and see Diana’s friend and what happened to her up until the fight.

After reading this, I read a Neil Gaiman childrens book. It was so comforting because everything was in chronological order. Scene switches to other characters were fine because they were in chronological order. Each scene moved the story ahead. Why do so many authors of grown-up novels think jumping around is good writing?

I think the author should have dropped the werewolf scenes. There were a few of them. They felt like interruptions. There was no story about them. It was like “don’t forget there are werewolves in this world.”

I was confused about the bad guys. I wanted to know more about who they were, their motivations, and what happened to them at the end of this book. But I’m guessing this is something being developed through the entire 13 book series. Maybe more was done with that in prior and future books. This is the only book in the series I read.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Antony Ferguson is excellent.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Unabridged audiobook length: 6 hrs and 13 mins. Swearing language: strong but rarely used. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: one. Setting: I’m not sure. I think current day southern U.S. and paranormal realms. Book copyright: 2013. Genre: paranormal romance.

3/5; 3 stars; B

This was an entertaining glimpse into the Kings series. I enjoyed the main characters. Unfortunately, I don't think there is enough meat here to make me wade through the rest of the 'Kings finding their Queens' stories. I am however interested to see what she comes up with at the end when the chessboard is full and the BIG BAD is on the scene so will probably read the last book in the series.

I like this author's style and will definitely read more of her books.

The Kings Series is a spin off (I consider it a continuation) of The Big Bad Wolf series (see Monday’s post), and this is the fourth book. I recommend reading all of these books in order as the back story and continuing plot lines are important.

Heather Killough-Walden is a master of characterization. In each installment, we meet more characters and revisit old favorites. This is one of the many things that keeps me coming back for more! Damon is strong, handsome, smart, funny, loyal, and loving. Diana is noble, protective, strong, and just as funny as Damon. I loved them both! There is one scene where Damon’s actions made me cry and if you know me, you know that doesn’t happen very often.

The world building and continuing story arcs are flawlessly executed. If you enjoy paranormal romance or urban fantasy, this is a series you should have on your TBR list.

One other thing I would like to mention that I don’t usually bring up – the covers! You don’t have to have man candy and corset ripping to compel readers, and the cover art for all four of these proves it!

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll sum up with this: The Goblin King is action packed, fast paced, and sweet (in just the right places). I can’t wait to find out what happens when the next King finds his Queen :)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see if I can watch some NetFlix with Damon and Diana!

I am a HUGE fan of all of HKW's books but The Kings series is by far one of my favorites. Each one I read I am convinced that there is no possible way that I could love a story more than the last or connect with the characters like in previous Kings books but again I was proven wrong...

In The Goblin King, Damon Chroi and Diana Piper are a phenomenal couple who find that they share a love for the movie Highlander (a personal favorite of mine) and of all things My Pretty Pony. Clearly there is much more to their relationship but I thoroughly enjoyed the creativity of finding something so random that could connect with the readers to make their experiences of being alone and not connecting with others all the more sweet when they realized the commonality:) Damon is quirky, funny and convinced that he will never find his queen until he runs into Diana... FIREWORKS!!!

LOVED this latest installment and cannot wait to find out which King's story is next - no pressure Heather but when is the next one coming out???:)

This series will not disappoint - but I highly suggest reading them in order so that you can truly appreciate all of the old friends that surface in each of the King's stories.

I'm really on the fence with this one. It's more like a 3.5* reading for me.
It seemed very rushed, the main characters didn't even have time to know each other's names, and they were forever bonded.
Very superficial and weak plot.
I do like this series. It is full of hot alpha males. In this case one that loves My Little Pony, I'm not judging. But I need something with more meat on it, something more thought out.
I will probably continue to read this series but not too soon.

Warning! This review contains spoilers

Ok, so obviously there's a pattern here for the King books: 1) the male lead has been alone for thousands of years and really wants to find his queen. 2) He finds her and instantly gets tunnel vision. 3) The respective queen is really apprehensive about the king and doesn't want anything to do with his world of supernatural creatures. 4) She eventually gives in because her desire for the king is overwhelming. 5) There's some significant battle involving the king and queen. 6) The king and queen end up getting together and having their (kind of) HEA.
Yea, let's just say these books are becoming predictable. I'm only continuing to read them because I already started the series and have to finish it. It's a curse that I always have to finish what I start.

Once again, we have a book with a bland romance but at least a better overarching plot. I just don't feel the love!!! There are so many other books where I can say "Wow, now that's what I call love", and this isn't one of them.

And once again, you guessed it, f***ing Evie stole the spotlight. Ugh! Can someone please give that girl her HEA? Honestly, it's torturing the reader and her.

There's just no creativity to the series, no imagination, and nothing tying the books or the characters together except that they're all kings and queens. And it also sucks that there's nothing special about each queen. All we know is that they are more powerful than the kings, but none of them have their own unique power. Well, Diana can heal and is a seer, which is progress, but the books before that did not make the queens seem like anything special. It would be great if each queen had a special power that was needed in the final battle to defeat the great evil plaguing the world.

Seriously, I can see these books going so many more interesting and diverse ways, but I guess HKW doesn't. For example, HKW didn't make anything of the fact that Diana is the goddess of the moon in Roman mythology and that Artemis is the Greek version of the goddess. I mean, it was important in that the Fae kings all consider the moon sacred and thus their queens would somehow be related to the moon, but that's all; no cool powers, no cool ancestry connections, etc. For example, Diana could have had some special power over the moon, the tides, and gravity, since that is all related. And Chloe, from the previous book, could have had control over space, the stars, the planets, and all that comes with it.

So overall, an OK read. I'm going to keep reading the series only because I'm in too deep and have to know what happens regarding the Egyptian gods and the evil power that is rising.

Another amazing read from HKW! Exciting, full of heart, and a wonderful continuation of a spectacular series. I particularly enjoyed the pop culture references... I was just talking about My Little Pony a week ago, & Labyrinth is one of my very favorite movies. :)

DNF after 55%

I was expecting something different, like an anti-hero, but the hero actually is really sweet. I especially wasn't a fan of the side story with apparently all the MCs from the previous three novels in the series, those parts weren't interesting at all. Maybe because I didn't read the previous book or because I was reading this for the romance and all the chapters from POV's of other characters got on my nerves. The characters were okay, but I'm not a fan of the insta-love or soulmate stuff, because I didn't see any chemistry between the two. The writing was nice but I think it's better to read all the books in series in order and I'm not invested enough to read a 13(!) book series.

Heather Killough-Walden’s soaring imagination is very evident as her wonderful world building continues in this her fourth novel, The Goblin King in her The Kings series. This series has gotten stronger with each new installment as the individual King meets his queen. Damon Chroi, our Goblin King, is a strong, handsome, funny, but lonely man who has been exiled by his own kind and his queen Diana Piper, who also has a very protective, strong, and loving personality; are a perfect couple who as their love develops also finds that they have a very unique and funny common love. With the additional side stories we are now delving deeper into our previous characters’ connection to each King and Queen and we are being drawn into the larger picture of the storyline which is slowly developing as each King meets his Queen. I largely recommend that the previous three novels of The Kings series and if possible the Big Bad Wolf series be read to really appreciate the connection between the main characters of The Goblin King and the other characters in this continuing, very fascinating and exciting storyline.

Damon Chroi is an Extremely powerful and Handsome Fae who was banished to a different Realm to be The Goblin King. He knows he will eventually meet his Queen although he cannot imagine a woman that would want to live in his Realm. While out trying to keep is Goblins inline he comes across his Queen.

Diana Piper has a secret which she very much wants to use for good but fears what would happen if she were to get caught. Her close friend who has a secret of her own (along with her sister) tries to talk her out of doing something potentially dangerous with no results. While off to serve her purpose she meets Damon. Needles to say she was not happy with him when they meet.

Passions will ignite but will Damon be able to convince Diana to be his Queen? You will have to read it to find out! ;o)

Once again our much loved characters from the BBW series is in the story. Love seeing them make an appearance... I just can't get enough of them! This book was amazing and I can't wait until the next one comes out. Keep them coming Heather! Your books top anything else! :O)

AHH. I love this series so much. Diana and Damon are my favorite King and Queen couple yet.
I will not lie to y'all the romance happens quickly and I know that, that annoys a lot of people. It can annoy me to at times when after a day people are already in love but the way Heather Killough-Walden does the romance it doesn't seem like it's rushed. Plus if she's your queen there's not much else you can do but fall in love with her you know. Plus a woman who heals and who can kick ass. helllloooo. I may be just a little bit in love with her.
I was sad when this book ended.. I have loved the other books but I was never sad for the conclusion. Even with Evie and Roman (who up until these two were my favorite) I was okay with that book ending and moving on to the next but I almost don't want to move on because I will miss the Goblin royalty. Plus any character that can heal always fascinates me and I want to know more. I hope because the next now involves Diana's friend that she will still be a part of it.

Awesome I can't wait to read The Seelie King.
Love this series.
I had the hardest time putting this book down. Damon is a Goblin king who falls in love with a mortal Diana who has the ability to heal people, animals etc.... she chooses only to heal animals in fear of someone finding out about her abilities. Damon meets her and her whole life is turned upside down and is put in danger from an immortal who is trying to kill her. This book has it all love, danger, sexy shifters and more. A must read. Heather's writing sucks you in and does not let you go even when you finish the book, you keep thinking about the characters long after the story ends. I can't wait for the next book in The King series. I am sure it will be a great and awesome read. I thought the Big Bad Wolfs series was great, The King series is right up there with it! You are AWESOME Heather!

Story of The Goblin King, Damon Choi and his queen, Diana Piper.

Another good book in the Kings installement. I'm beginning to be too familiar with HKW's writing style because all my predicitions seem to be right.

Anyways, I like Damon, he's hot but with some weird "quirks". Like he's into The highlander tv series, My little Pony cartoons (WTF?!) and facebook. hehe, so current.

However, i felt like their story is quite short because Roman and Evie (the vampire king & queen) seem to hijack the story from them. I guess its inevitable in the series' books since all 13 Kings and Queens' fates are intertwined.

I cant wait to read the story of the Seelie (and hopefully the Unseelie) king and queen!

The Goblin King was so exciting!
I was nervous to know what was going to happen with Evie and Roman´s brother and i wasn´t disapointed. Damon is so funny. who would´ve thought that this powerful fae king who was exiled in another realm because of his power, loves to sit in his chair and watch My little pony??!! I can see it right now, Damon in is chair with Diana and artemis on his lap watching tv, a cute little family moment. Lol!!!
Heather does magic in this series, and this book is another proof of her tallent, she should have a great publisher print her books. She´s as good as Gena Showalter or Lara Adrian!!
I deeply recommend not only this book but the rest of this series and her other books, wich are amazing!!!

Heather did it again. I love The Kings series. And the Goblin King does not disappoint. It was fast paced, intense, romantic, mysterious, and as usual, hard to put down. There were lots of twists and turns and shocking revelations.

This story surrounded Damon, the Goblin King and his love interest and queen, Diana. It continues on from the last one, so my suggestion is for you to start at the beginning. Either with The Kings or if possible with the Big Bad Wolf series. Not that they can’t be read on their own, but it gives you better insight and understanding where the story is going.

This was a very emotional story. I laughed and I cried from beginning to end. Very enjoyable reading and I can’t wait for the next one.

The Goblin King

This is the 4th book in The Kings series and once again it does not disappoint. This is a spin off from the Big bad Wolf series and in order to understand some of the characters I would recommend reading these in order. One of the great things I love about HKW is they way she keeps the people we met from previous books involved in the current plot.
Now for the latest Kings book...yummm the goblin king Damon Chroi and his queen Diana.Damon is actually fae but was cast out from them in fear, because he was far to powerful.Diana is the human future queen. She has an abilty to heal and use this on animals. Out the 4 books this one is my favorite so far, I felt the development story was smoother then the others. This is a fast paced book and I look forward to the next book.

This is a really good, yummy, series so far. I am so glad I recently purchased books five and six.

This story centers on the Goblin King (think of Jareth in The Labyrinth). He's devilish but he is thoughtful as well. He may carry a big sword but he isn't as thick as you might think.

Damon strikes me as very passionate and deep. He is alone and has been for thousands of years. Diana is his other half and as much as she tries to resist the truth she is drawn ever deeper into the Fae world.

Tragedy of the worst kind is what breaks the final barriers between the two and they come together; each stronger than they were before.

The Goblin King may be one of my favorite books in The Kings series. I loved Damon’s character. I found him more relatable than the other kings. I really like all the side storylines in this book. All the characters stories from the BBW and The Kings are really starting to collide. I find series more interesting when multiple things are going on all at once. This book is a face paced page turner. I can’t wait until the next installment in the series. I definitely recommend the Big Bad Wolf and The King series to anyone who loves paranormal romances.

This fourth book in The Kings series was great! The ongoing plot thickens and continues to unfold, but doesn't take away from the building relationship of Damon and Diana. HKW's writing style is classic but not stuffy, and I love the splashes of fun pop culture she throws in there. My favorite of the series so far was The Phantom King but The Goblin King might be taking that top ranking now. Highly recommend this book, as well as the previous three books and the Big Bad Wolf series (and pretty much anything else written by Heather Killough-Walden).
