Getting Some

Rate this book
What do you do when getting what you want in life and love requires giving up everything you thought you owned? Chama, Tasha and Coco are three friends pursuing their dreams in London. Tasha’s newly-minted, new-age world view makes her current life peaceful and her gangster past something of a distant memory - until her man’s self-imposed celibacy ban is broken just long enough for him to impregnate her – and propose to someone else. Coco’s just about managing to keep her life, her staff and her husband firmly in the palm of her hand, until one wild indiscretion sends her into a tailspin and causes everything she knows to crumble. Chama’s Christian values – and her belief in happily ever after - are challenged by her husband’s impotence. Does a founding member and head of the women’s ministry of the Blessed Family Church leave her husband for his inability to have sex? Things come to a head when the secret that two of them have allowed to remain buried erupts in one life-changing afternoon and it seems like things can never be the same again.

This book is a funny, sexy romp through the relationship terrain of three modern thirty-something women.

On the surface this book is full to the brim of attitude and sexy scenarios, but once you get into it you are met with a richly woven narrative about friendship, marriage and striving to live the life you always wanted to. ‘Getting Some’ focuses on the lives of three women who have been friends for years, as they struggle to help each other while their marriages (future and present) collapse around them. The tone is upbeat and exciting, but the content tackles some serious issues that we all have to deal with in our lives.

The friendship is at the forefront of the story and it is depicted in a very real way, with each of the women openly confronting the others when they believe a mistake is being made. Anyone with a close knit group of girlfriends knows that this kind of brutal honesty is essential! They have a lot to learn about honesty at the start of the novel, but by the end both the girls and the reader alike tackle that lesson head on. While the narrative voice of the women doesn’t really distinguish them, their different personalities clearly come across through their actions.

Kiki Terrell has created a very sexy story here that is the perfect escape for anyone going through a bad break up or even considering whether a relationship is over. Think of it as therapy through the pages!

In "Getting Some," by Kiki Terrell, the reader is introduced to three girlfriends living in London--Coco, Tasha and Charma. Coco has a very charmed life, and uses her `powers' to get what she wants. Unfortunately, Coco has made a mistake that could lead to the deterioration of her marriage. Can her friends help her put her marriage back together? Tasha is on a quest for personal evolution. Will she achieve oneness with her man and with the Universe? Chama, a washed in the blood woman of God, also has a few problems of her own. Will she face her demons so that God can remove the yoke of the devil from her life?

"Getting Some" is the British version of "Sex and the City." Each woman's challenge will endear you to their story and keep you engrossed in the storyline. This novel was not short on words--maybe too many at times. There were a few misspellings, punctuation issues and phrases that were uniquely British (which I had to stop and look up). Despite these challenges, I still found the novel to be witty, naughty and engaging.

Terrell has a great vocabulary and gift for painting a story. What I loved most about this novel is the fact that it proved that drama traverses locales. This was my first read by Ms. Terrell, and an excellent introduction to her style.

Three women friends, three points of view, three stories. Getting Some follows Coco, Chama and Tasha as they juggle life and men, and their friendships with each other.
Each woman has a distinct voice and is clearly written. Each story arc has it’s own unique nuance and tone and I suspect you’ll love one of the three, be irritated by another and identify with one too. Most of us will have a friend like at least one of these three and you’ll be rolling your eyes, and laughing at the goings on through the book.
If you want a good dose of life lived large and loud, with laughs and love along the way, then Getting Some will fit the bill.
A touch irreverent, entertaining and with a fair sprinkle of intimacy alongside the chaos that life throws in, Getting Some is an excellent debut for Kiki Terrell, and also for her character, Coco Devine.

Sometimes We Have to Give to Get!

Kiki Terrell’s “Getting Some” is the story of three friends, Cocorella, Tasha and Chama, all living in London and going through what I would call life changing events with a lot of drama. Some of which is their own doing. Sometimes it takes giving up something to get something.

I found each of the ladies’ dilemmas to be interesting but at times just a little too much. Overall it was a pretty good novel. I did find some errors in spelling and some spacing issues and I had to get used to the different spelling of some words. I think readers will find "Getting Some" engaging as there are some really funny parts as well as some parts where you will want to say ‘end the relationships already!’

Enjoyed this story of 3 friends who are there for each other while still dealing with their own personal demons. This books is more than just about sex, although a lot of what the women are dealing with centers around it. This was a book to make you step back and look at your own life and see where you can make improvements. Self reflection and what's best for you in the long run.
