"I wasn't the boy who was going to swoop in and save her when she needed me. I was the monster."
"Why are you treating me this way?"
"I tried to be the good guy once; it didn't take."
"This is not a negotiation. I want to make you come, Lily. I am being very nice to you. It would be in your best interest to take my gift as it is and not be greedy."
"I was thinking with something other than my brain; I just wasn't sure it was my dick or my heart."
"Don't be sorry. I'm yours and I wasn't you to fight for us. I will fight for you every day for the rest of my life if I have to."
3.5 STARS.
I needed to separate the Rose I remembered from the Lily sitting in front of me now. I had already broken all of my rules.
“Even with everything... I’m glad I found you.”
"Rose-colored glasses"
“Do you love me?”
“My love for you is the only thing I’ve ever been sure of.”
“Colt. Like a horse?”
“Like the gun, sweetheart.”
… I’ve been straddling the line of good and evil for too long.
I didn’t want to deal with the pain; I wanted to fucking drown in it– kill off any part of my heart that still beat for her.
They way she looked at me it was just… different. She didn’t see the worthless criminal everyone else saw, even though that was exactly who I was.
We rode toward the unknown, not caring what the future held for us as long as we faced it together. If another storm approached us, we would be each other’s shelter.
The story alternates back and forth between Colt and Lily's past which took me a little bit of getting used to but once I did I started to understand and I became more and more intrigued about his actions as well as hers.
She was beautiful and smart but most of all she was real. She wasn't this cookie cutter teenager that fit into the popular crowd. She was broken like I was and I wanted us to fix each other.
Lily soon finds herself in Colt's world where she is unsure of him, his motives and why he is acting the way he is. Things become very intense as Colt struggles with right and wrong and most importantly his feelings for Lily.
"It wasn't your job to find me. We were kids. I wasn't anything to you." "You were everything to me."
Lily is terrified she doesn't understand Colt, what he is doing and why.
"What happened to you?"...................."You happened."
Let the roller coaster ride of emotions begin.
"Don't fucking touch me, Lily. You don't get to fucking touch me." I closed my eyes, not wanting her to see the pure rage, the hatred, the wanting.
As time passes and these two are in the depths of dealing with so many emotions those walls come (no pun intended) tumbling down and the heat is on!
"What do you need sweetheart?" I asked, looking up at her before I kissed my way down her stomach. If her breathing was any indication, she was struggling not to cum and have a panic attack at the same time.
"You..."
Unfortunately all good things come to an end and these two find themselves in some pretty shitty circumstances. Aside from the fact that they are fighting for everything they need and want, trying to understand what the hell they are going to do, what has happened, where they go from here, they are also going to have to fight for their very own lives!
I'm yours and I want you to fight for us. I will fight for you every day for the rest of my life if I have to."
"This isn't a joke. This is life or fucking death, Lily. I am trying to save you."
"I'd walk through hell for you."
Teresa writes an excellent story that will have you turning the pages, engrossed in the story, all torn up inside and turned on by the intense relationship between Colt and Lily and I highly recommend it. It is different but in a great way and I truly think you will enjoy it!
I look forward to reading more from Mrs. Mummert.
I was provided and ARC of Safe Word in exchange for an honest review and I was thrilled to read it.
