ALBERT CORNELIS BAANTJER is the most widely read author in the Netherlands and has written more than fifty "De Kok" titles. He has also written other fiction and nonfiction and wrote a daily column in a Dutch newspaper. He was an inspector with the Amsterdam Police for thirty-eight years. Baantjer lived in Medemblik, Netherlands.

Plot kwam pas heel laat en daarvoor was het wat vaag wie er nou allemaal verdacht waren, had ik het idee. De samenhang was mij tijdens het verhaal tot het plot ook wat onduidelijk soms. Verder toch een leuk boek om te lezen.

Nog net 3 sterren. Op zich een goed verhaal maar de dader kwam wel behoorlijk uit de lucht vallen.

Dit boek was iets minder leuk dan voorgaande. Het verhaal begint veelbelovend maar dan wordt het verhaal met de baby niet echt verder uitgediept. Het plot komt eigenlijk beetje uit de lucht vallen. Kon het niet helemaal rijmen met de start van het boek. Maar goed, het is ook niet heel slecht natuurlijk. Het leest vrij snel weg. Vraag me af waarom iedereen altijd bij de IJsselsteinse Bank werkt trouwens.

Iets minder van kwaliteit dan we gewoon zijn van Baantjer. Het plot is verwarrend en iets vergezocht. Het verhaal begint met en drijfbrief. Ontvoering van een baby bij de doop. Dan volgen er twee moorden. Wat is het verband?

Leuk boek!

Het enige nadeel is dat de dader door de lezer zelf niet makkelijk aan te wijzen was, omdat er pas na de ontmaskering details naar voren kwamen, die duidelijk maakte waarom de persoon het gedaan heeft.

Maar verder een super leuk boek om te lezen.

AC Baantjer is another go-to author when I am in the mood for something entertaining but not something that I will give much thought to afterwards. DeKok and the Begging Death is that kind of novel for me and hits that spot.

Strongest on the procedural side this time out, with a bit of a convoluted case and resolution. The old familiars, however, felt oddly forced - and Little Lowee very differently handled in translation - a certain comfortable fluidity somehow lacking (perhaps just me, perhaps an anomaly... though I'd not be surprised to find out a ghostwriter was involved).

I have read others in the series and like them. They remind me of the Maigret novels.
