It's a rare treat to see a modern Lucky Luke story that manages to approach the quality and sense of fun of the golden-age stories - all the more so when they feature the Daltons, which I always thought were overdone. It does something new with them, and shows them as remotely competent once again... though I suspect that this is less because of Joe's poor leadership (he manages just fine without his brothers as well, after all) and more because they manage to confuse and even thwart Luke at the beginning. This is all new for him too, after all.

Just a shame that none of this is allowed to stick: at the end of the album they're all dirt-poor once again, sticking together once again, and fighting once again. In the unlikely event of the contrary, it could well have earned one more star.

My favorite yet from the new creative team.

Great art, perfectly emulating Morris' unique style but also more contemporary, thanks to the modern printing quality.
The gags are there and the story is fresh. Nice to see there are more things to be done with the Daltons.

The Dalton Brothers are a recurring theme in Lucky Luke, so the creators have always done well to spin a new tale around them that respects the history of the cartoon strip and adds something new and worthwhile. You want the running gags, but you don’t want a repeat of the previous adventure.

In Lone Riders the four brothers fall out after yet another capture by Luke and it’s decided that the first one to make $1,000,000 will be the new leader. Digging four separate (naturally) escape tunnels, the siblings depart the prison walls for four very different attempts at collating their loot. Joe Dalton goes straight to doing what he knows and does best, holding up banks, William discovers the lure of the casino, Jack eventually stumbles upon politics and Averell ends up being the catalyst in a fast food franchise.

While all this is taking place Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper are hot on their trails, but each time they catch up with one of the brothers the local populace appears to be happy with the new direction of the individual brother's life and would rather see him stay, to the point that they’re all soon making plenty of money and Luke appears to be helpless and hopeless. The only exception is Joe, who is just doing what he’s always done, but still amounting quite a hidden stash of cash.

Luke’s answer to this conundrum is to play them at their own game which has the result, eventually, of setting them one against the other before he can take charge of the situation.

This is one of the newest Lucky Luke books and the creative team of Achdé, Pennac & Benacquista have done a fine job of making it feel like a classic Lucky Luke adventure. It’s beautifully drawn by Achdé who lovingly mimics Morris’s style and it manages to breathe fresh energy into the Daltons by giving them the chance to blossom as individuals. Plenty of humour too, including Jolly Jumper appearing in a first floor window then complain of losing a shoe after descending a ladder, and although it’s a little softer than Goscinny’s work it’s still well within the sprit and fun of what’s gone before. Lucky Luke is in good hands.

Kolejny nieudany napad i kolejna przymusowa odsiadka niereformowalnych braci.

I quite enjoyed reading this one - it brings some fresh new ideas for a Lucky Luke adventure featuring the Daltons, and it actually provides some deeper insight to our characters.

The Daltons have finally had enough of Joe's failed plans, and they decide to break up, each on his own, with one goal in mind - the first brother who earns one million dollars will become the official leader of the Dalton gang.

*Spoilers*

Rather than everything going to shambles as one might expect, the Daltons thrive surprisingly well when they are separated. Joe continues the 'tradition' of robbing banks, William becomes the owner of a thriving casino, Jack turns to a career as a corrupt politician, while Averell builds a successful enterprise by being the head chef of a chain of Italian restaurants.
Lucky Luke, who is in charge of apprehending them, resorts to some underhanded measures in order to get them to turn against one another, but he realizes that this could lead them to killing each other. This culminates to a showdown, which forces Lucky Luke to remind them that as brothers they should appreciate that they have each other, for better or worse, while Lucky Luke himself has no family left that cares for him like they have. This is a sobering piece of information, and rarely do we see Lucky Luke confessing that the Daltons have an advantage over him for something.
At the end of the comic, there is even a moment that can be seen as a bit sentimental, where Ma Dalton (while preparing a pie with a file to help her imprisoned sons escape) reminiscences about her sons when they were children and that, despite them being a handful and having to raise them mostly on her own, she is proud of them.

I don't know about the other reviewers, but I found it a really nice story overall.

Maybe a 5 is a bit high, but you cant give halfe a Point, and as a Comedy its realy good.
Apparently the Comic got a lot of negative Feedback, because the Title made the Story a bit predictable?
Mild Spoilers ahead.

I think splitting up the ever pressent Daltons, and letting them have there own Adventure creats a lot of fresh air.
We didnt realy saw them acting on there own much, since the last part of "the Daltons Cousins"
Especially William, and Jack are allowed to be destinctive Personalitys for once.
Usually they just serve as yes Mans, and Puffer for Joe, explaining things to Averall, holding Joes Anger under controll, especially against Averall, but also giving his Ideas reinforcement.
They, even for the Writers, pretty interchangable.
Averall has a nice Story about forming the first Mafia, that was pretty epic.
The short Guest Apperance of Ma Dalton, and Luke speaking out for the gift of Family, and acting genuinly envious, but in a healthy sense, where pretty nice Scenes as well.

This is an OK Lucky Luke album. The authors write an OK story that actually manages to use the characters of the Dalton brothers in a new way. No mean feat as they have been featured in oh so many Lucky Luke stories by now. Penance and Benacquista are not Goscinny (the original scriptwriter), but then no-one is...

The artist Achdé is also doing an OK job with the drawings, which more or less looks like they were done by the original artist Morris. Maybe even more than an OK job, as this actually looks like it could have been done by Morris himself.

All-in-all, I miss the wonder and the brilliance of the earlier Lucky Luke albums, but as with another classic album series, Asterix, they went with the far too early passing of Goscinny in 1977. That said, this is well made and fun entertainment in the classical French-Belgian, fun for the whole family tradition, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Lucky Luken uudet seikkailut -sarjan kuudennessa osa "Yksinäinen ratsastaja" (Egmont, 2013) olisi saattanut saada toisenkin tähden, ellen olisi hetki sitten tullut lukeneeksi vanhoja Morrisin ja Goscinnyn klassikkoalbumeja. Surkeaa, kovin surkeaa on nykymeno.
