365 Daily Devotions From Favorite Hymns

Rate this book
After the Bible, the church's greatest book for spiritual challenge, encouragement, and faith-building thought may be the hymnal. This brand-new devotional draws upon classic hymn lyrics, both familiar and lesser known, as the basis for brief, contemporary, daily meditations-365 in all. Author Daniel Partner delves into the deeper meaning of the great hymns, creating devotional readings that inform and inspire. Daily Wisdom from the Classic Hymns is perfect for those who love traditional hymns-but also an excellent resource for people who prefer more contemporary worship.

I read this book as one of 10 in my morning daily reading for 2017. I try to read selections from many of the world's religions every one or two years, and this was one. I love music, and love hymns, so I thought this would provide a great explanation of the background of each hymn and provide though-provoking commentary.

There was no background for the hymns, just a verse quoted at the top of each day. Thus, the book becomes quickly just a series of conservative Christian essays on (for the most part) New Testament passages, and most of these are form the letters of Paul.

One of the ways that I evaluate a daily reading book is to consider the number of times that I cut and pasted a quote into my daily journal. For this book it was one:

"Most believers are familiar with the phrase “God so loved the world,” but they may not know that the Greek word translated “world” in John 3:16 is cosmos."

So, you might like this book if you come from a conservative Christian worldview, but, despite the title, there isn't much in at related to the hymns, other than to the extent that the hymn is based on the same bible text as the essay for the day.

Last, there was a missed opportunity to tie the hymns to the calendar or church year. Having a Good Friday hymn on Christmas Eve seemed like poor planning to me.

"Daily Devotional using a stanza from a well-known hymn each day along with corresponding Scripture verses and teachings. You'll find comfort, challenge, encouragement, and motivation each and every day! While I'm currently enjoying this, I wanted to say that it's not quite all I had hoped for. I wanted something with a little more "meat" to it and therefore, I often end up reading more than one entry each day.

What a Blessing!

I have been using this book ever day for several years. I love it! I have always loved the hymns, and the author's theology is absolutely solid.
