Not Even Death Keeps a Good Demoness Down

There’s never an end to the crazy when you’re demon spawn. Not that Faith Bettincourt’s complaining. She’s been patching things up with her angelic on-again off-again boyfriend, Matt, and her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ Part Deux. Oh, and Faith is saving kids from Death in her pediatric unit one soul at a time. Life is good.

Until Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death and is forced to take his place. Now she’s taking lives instead of saving them. Which is kind of a problem when you’re a nurse. As if that weren’t bad enough, she is suddenly thrust into the worst scenario of them all--Matt’s ex Brenda is back, and she’s brought the Apocalypse with her.

Faith’s not about to give up the world...or her man. But when the chips are down, what’s a demoness supposed to do? Besides take matters into her own hands, of course.

My English review

I love this series and it’s been a moment since I was waiting for this third volume. I was very annoyed with Faith in the second novel even though I loved her and I was curious to see how she would solve her problems. But I must say that when she finds a solution about a point, other problems appear, completely upsetting the life of our heroine.

After her separation with Matt, Faith finally understands what is good for her and she is now again with this extraordinary man. But of course nothing could long remain quiet and while she makes a run with her mother, she crushes the Angel of Death and is found in spite of what she wants with the power of Death. You suspect that as she loves to save people, so it is not the most glorious news… especially as when she touches any person, they’re likely to die. Let me tell you that this is a big big problem! Whatsoever it is about Matt, or her best friend who is pregnant and Faith is supposed to help for childbirth or about her job. But in addition to that, that power is a curse for those who possess it, and the archangel Michael is determined to retrieve the gifts he considers as his own. But his proposal is a little too good to be honest, and Faith does not yet know what to expect.

I once again enjoyed the novel, even if it is true that it is quite sad to see Faith in this condition and finding a solution could worsen everything. Yet it is always touching to see how she and Matt form a lovely couple. They are both really lovely. I expected a perfectly foul play by Michael but I admit that the end surprised me a lot and I loved how everything had been done. Of course, I found it quite « fun » to find Brenda, and I did not really expect to see her here (yes because I had not read the synopsis), even if she is crazier than ever.

I had a great time with this book again, the writing is light and simple enough and the novel is finished very quickly once we enter in the story. There is nothing complex in the intrigue but the novels of the series allow to have a little break and to have a good time. Another great find and I hope we will have more again soon.

Being the devil's youngest daughter continues to be a challenge for Faith. Her love life is a mess, having broken up with her nephlim boyfriend Matt and now that she has accidentally become the angel of death, she may never be able to touch another person again. Faith may be a demon but as a kind hearted nurse who works in the pediatric ward, deciding who is going to live and die each day is at odds with her profession of saving lives. Not to mention, being the Angel of Death comes with a lot of paperwork. Unfortunately for Faith, this is only the beginning of her problems. When the archangel Michael decides he wants her powers, it's up to Faith and the rest of her odd family to put a stop to the apocalypse.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead continues in the irreverent manner of the last two books in this series. If you are a bible literalist or even highly religious, this most definitely will not be the book for you. If however you are open to the idea of God and Satan being brothers heading up what is easily the most dysfunctional family ever, dive right in. Eimer plays with many biblical stories and adds great humor to them like an over protective dad being the reason Jesus was resurrected. Or even things like having Jesus say, "in my name," when he is frustrated.

Faith really hasn't grown very much since the first two books. This would be a problem if I didn't like her character so much. She knows who she is, what she values, and is always ready to act. At times she walks the line between becoming a spunky agent, particularly when briefly stripped of her powers but she manages to keep her wits about her. All of the surrounding female cast are strong women particularly Lisa who refuses to be treated like an invalid because she is pregnant and demanding that Faith now wallow in her misery after becoming the Angel of the death. There is a real sense of camaraderie to the female characters. The only real problem I have in terms of gender is the vengeful Brenda, who attacked Faith sure in the belief that Faith was the reason Matt rejected her. Brenda is the trope laden, stalking ex girlfriend.

I was given this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review. This is book 3 in Speak of the Devil series. Book 1 is Luck of the Devil. Book 2 is Devil May Care. I haven't read the first two books. The main character is Faith who happens to be the youngest daughter of the devil and she is engaged to Matt, her angel boyfriend. The writing is witty. My problem was with the storyline. Faith barely gets out of something and is immediately thrown into something else. Can't Angels and Demons get along for just enough time for Faith and Matt go on a date or two or Faith take her sister-in-law to lamaze class? This book also has a zillion different cast members, meaning you never spend enough time with one person to really know them. I guess angels and demons come from large families. If you read and enjoyed the first two books I don't doubt you'll like this too. I would have just liked to see Faith work her job at the hospital with fun side interactions in her demon/angel world.

My Review:
I'm not usually a huge reader of humorous romance. I have to be in the right mood for it. This series has been an exception for me in that area. I've truly loved the first two books in the series.

While this one was a fun read too, it lost something for me. The series skirts along the edge of religion in a wonderful way. I love Patricia Eimer's world and her quirky view on how religion and all those players within it might work behind the scenes, but this book delved too deeply into some of the quagmire of the end-days and such....which lost me as a reader. It got too deep into the religious aspects there in the hospital scenes which I have no interest in when reading.

One other teeny, tiny complaint...I've loved the relationship between Matt and Faith through the whole series. There has always been lots going on, but their relationship has stayed front and center. That didn't happen in this book. Matt was there and things are happening between them, but the scenes where he's there almost seemed like an afterthought. Especially with Faith's new power issues in this one, I wanted to see more scenes with just the two of them.

In this book, Faith has a car accident...she hits the Angel of Death who then gives her his powers as he dies. This sets off a huge chain reaction of apocalyptic proportions. Oh, and yeah, being the Angel of Death also is a curse because anyone you touch dies....not good news for Faith and her new fiance, Matt.

The entire gang is here again...
*Faith's dad the Omega (Satan)
*Faith's uncle the Alpha (God)
*her cousin, J (Jesus)
*her brother Tolliver (Antichrist)
*her fiance Matt...the new leader of the Angale (assassin angels who kill demons...yeah, Faith is a demon)

It's an interesting mix and Patricia Eimer continues to bring her completely original views of this biblical family into the stories in such an entertaining way. The entire series is completely creative and inventive and I do love all the snark. And there are some especially sweet scenes between Faith and J in this book which I loved that went back to his crucifixion. And I know that sounds odd to take a humorous viewpoint on these things that people cherish so deeply, but again...Patricia Eimer does it really well, without getting too religious...for the most part. Like I said, there were moments in this book. But if anything, these books actually put a human face on these characters, especially J...who supposedly lived a human life here on earth.

Confession...I was raised in a VERY religious upbringing, but probably border on atheist at this point. As a result, I normally hate books with a deeply religious slant. This series is not like that. As a reader with a religious background, I love the humor and fun that the author has been able to infuse into these characters...and never does she do it in a bad way either...I truly don't think these books will offend deeply religious readers either.

Bottom line...If you like humor in your romance, you need to be reading this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead by Patricia Eimer
Faith Bettincourt is a demon, and also a nurse, who works hard to save lives as often as possible, sometimes even intervening against the Angel of Death, Archangel Michael, himself. Michael is not pleased that a low-level demon can beat him in the soul game. He is power hungry, and yearns for a way to become the top Angel of Death, with all the power it entails. He’s been denied the job over and over again, because he’s been deemed unsuitable for the job.
Faith was recruited to take her crazy mother shopping. About five minutes prior to leaving, she and her boyfriend reconciled. They didn’t even have time to seal their reconciliation with a kiss because she had to hurry. She took her brother’s armored car for added protection and rushed away to take her mother to meet her personal shopper. In a moment of personal distraction, Faith hit someone. When she and her body guard got out of the car to help the person, they discovered Faith had managed to hit the head Angel of Death who took the opportunity to pass his powers to Faith. From that moment forward, any living thing she touched died.
How was she supposed to be the Lamaze coach for her sister-in-law? How could she have a relationship with Matt and never touch him again? They were immortal. That was a long, long time to go without touching each other. She really liked touching Matt. Also, she was a nurse; destined to SAVE lives, not take them. How could she possibly align herself with this new job of hers? Question upon question flew threw Faith’s mind. Of course, this was only the beginning of her problems. Archangel Michael discovered that she had managed to snag the job he’d wanted for thousands of years. He was not amused. Let the fun begin.
Patricia Eimer has written an amusing and fast-paced novel filled with twists and turns, and intriguing problems. The book keeps the reader engaged from its beginning until the very end. The characters are interesting, though the reader gets the impression this is not the first book, but perhaps the second in a series, so some character details may be lacking. In spite of this, it is a great book. The interactions between Jesus, his father, and the demons are hysterical. The characters themselves are interesting, the reader wants to keep reading in hopes of learning more about the characters.
Eimer has done a great job of creating interesting dialogue; this is something often lacking in novels. She has the ability to craft such great conversations the reader can envision the characters exactly as described. This is a rare and wonderful art form.
I rate this book four glittering stars.

When I first saw the cover of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and read the blurb, I figured this had to be a fun book. Little did I know how much fun! This is a quirky story with lots of characters to keep up. And what a collection it is! Wicked angels, good demons, Alpha and Omega (Otherwise known as God and Satan) just to name a few. Anyone who is a serious religious zealot probably will take offense to the liberties the author has taken. Me, I found it refreshingly comical.

When I first started reading Before the Devil Knows You're Dead I felt a little lost. I knew this was a series but so many series nowadays are heavily depended on its previous titles. In this instance, it is. That is no fault of author Ms. Eimer. That was a complete my bad on that assumption. Once I got over the confusion I settle in for what I hoped was a good read. What I actually got was a GREAT read. What a plethora of fantastic characters! Between the good the bad and the questionably evil, easily my favorite character was Faith. If anyone is a trouble magnet, Faith is. The problems she gets into are many, and you would think it would be too much for a reader to absorb. I found all the chaos exhilarating funny. There were so many laugh out loud moments for me from her unable to get a date with her boyfriend Matt to her conversations with her cousin J (Short for Jesus!). So many fun twist and turns frankly, the hardest part about the book for me was putting it down.

While this book works adequately as a stand-alone, I believe it would have be easier for me to follow if I had the chance to read the previous books in the Speak of the Devil series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much so that I can’t wait to get my hands on the previous titles in this series. If you have a good sense of humor then grab yourself a copy of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, sit back, relax and enjoy yourself.

I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

The third book in the Speak of the Devil series is an action packed paranormal urban fantasy romance.

Demoness and pediatric nurse Faith Bettincourt is not complaining, life is good; she’s patching things up with her on again off again angelic boyfriend, her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ part deux and she’s saving kids in the pediatric unit from death. Then she’s forced to take the Angel of Death’s place when she accidentally runs over him, starting a chain of events that starts off the Apocalypse. But Faith’s not about to give up the world – or her man, so what’s a girl supposed to do – take matters into her own hands of course.

This fast and smooth flowing plot keeps the reader on the edge of their seats with lots of suspense, action and romance. The author brings this story to life with vivid images and details capturing the imagination of the reader. The characters are mesmerizing and easily related to even if they do have the power to destroy the world as we know it.

There is some romance between Faith and Matt and a couple of other characters which adds depth to this urban fantasy. The tension builds as the reader follows Faith to not only finds out if she can stop the Apocalypse, but to find out if she gets her man. The story catchers the reader’s attention and doesn’t let go until the very end.

The author has created a fantasy world with a humorous and dramatic twist on mythology that I found to be really enjoyable and refreshingly different from others that I have read. I love the charming characters and the action scenes are well written and believable. I haven’t read the first two books…yet, but I was able to figure out what’s what without the author giving too much away. I am definitely going to read the first two and be on the lookout for more books by Patricia Eimer.

I received an ARC through NetGalley.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was a pretty good end to this series. Much like the previous book, it didn't fully grasp my attention, but I did like it better. Faith and Matt's break up doesn't last for long, but a new problem arises when Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death. As he was dying, his powers transferred to her and now anything or anyone she touches dies. Not a great way to restart a relationship. Meanwhile, the Apocalypse is coming in the form of a crazy nephilim in a sweater set.

I was quite into Before the Devil Knows You're Dead when Faith was taking over as the new Angel of Death. I thought it was a great plot point, which also allowed for some interesting world building. But it was over almost as soon as it started. Then an other interesting event takes place, but it's resolved in one chapter. All of this could have easily been expanded on, but as it is, they're both just stepping stones to the main conflict which I didn't enjoy as much.

Of course, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead has a happy ending for everyone involved. Well, not the bad guys, obviously. Everything is resolved quite conveniently and wrapped up swiftly, so we don't really get to enjoy the final face off or the happily ever after. This series had a lot of potential, but nothing really came together for me. It was just kind of cute and kind of funny in places, kind of dull in others. It's not really a bad series, just not the one for me. If you enjoy angels and demons with a side of humor and quirkiness, then this is probably the series for you.

Faith is staying pretty busy. She is a demon working as a nurse in a hospital and loves helping people. She is trying to work things out with her angelic boyfriend Matt and help her sister in law prepare for the birth of her child who is the anti christ two. Faith is happy and when she accidentally runs over the Angel of Death she is horrified to find she is now the angel of death and must be the head of the reapers. She never wanted to take lives only save them and she can't touch anyone without killing them. On top of that the Apocalypse seems to be happening and Faith will have to do her best to stop it.

I haven't read the other books in this series but after some confusion at first I figured things out. Faith may be a demon but she really only wants to help people. She has to figure out if she really wants to be with Matt and how much she wants to be out of the Angel of Death job. She has so much going on but she still does a good job trying to take control of things. There is tons of action and intrigue as the Apocalypse is beginning and they have to stop it. There is also lots of humor as several times you will get several laughs while reading. I enjoyed seeing all the characters and learning about them. I would recommend reading the first two so there isn't any confusion but this looks like a good paranormal series that I will be looking more into.

I've enjoyed this series from book one. I love a good tongue in cheek kind of book and this one doesn't disappoint. The humor is good but there is also a UF element to the whole series. This is also a series I would read in order. The events in the other books lead up to what happens in this book. Yes, I repeat (and don't faint) I read these in order and I suggest you do the same. :D

The last book sort of killed me with the ending (in a good way) so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. The angst isn't pulled out too long for us to find out what we want to know and before we can get too comfortable the Faith finds herself in a bind. Not too unusual for our gal, but this one could affect her loved ones as well... um.. okay, well, that isn't too unusual either... ;) Well, before they can find a solution for the first crisis... the Archangel Michael tricks Faith and starts the Apocalypse. Now that isn't as big of a jump as I just made it sound, but I didn't want to give too much away in what happens. *evil laugh* ☜ hey, totally appropriate here... :D

I give this book 3 1/2 stars. This one doesn't fell quite as tight as the other two, but still very enjoyable nonetheless. I hope there is more adventure in store for Faith and her celestial family. I would pick up another book in this series in a heartbeat (or wingbeat?).

The third book in the Speak of the Devil series is epic - as in end of the world apocalypse epic. Faith just can't seem to keep her life normal - or a least normal for the youngest daughter of Lucifer. Things just keep spiraling out of control and getting even more crazy.

I love Faith more and more with every page. She is such a riot - her entire family is, but she really stands out as such a unique person. A lover of children and a nurse, finding herself the Angel of Death is quite the life changing bummer, but she tries to deal with it. Her way of dealing with it leads to a series of "accidents" and "incidents" that lead to the beginnings of the legendary apocalypse.

Through it all Matt remains loyal - willing to do anything to make their relationship work. He's a great guy, but we really didn't see much of him in this one. We do get to see more of her roommate Lisa and a lot of Howard the ghost. All of these side characters are fantastic in their own way, but when put together the way Patricia Eimer does, they really take off and become very memorable.

This series should be a must read for lovers of snarky, smart-ass, sarcastic demons with a very, very non-traditional family tree. I loved every minute of it.

Book 3 has more action than the first two books combined.Everything that has been stewing comes to a head and no one is left unaffected. After a crazy accident Faith becomes the new Angel of Death. As everyone scrambles to figure a way for her to get out of it, another is intent on taking it away from her at all costs. You would think that would be good thing but this person wants it for pure evil.

Faith has a pretty unique life, she thinks she wants her relationships with people to be normal but when she gets normal all she can think about is getting back to the way things were. All you Matt and Faith fans will be happy with the way things develop in BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD. Faith and her family are a hoot. They give you plenty of chances to laugh with and at them. They love each other, their really close and it shows. Most of book 3 does end up being pretty series but they still find chances to insert their special brand of humor.

The Speak of the Devil series has been a crazy ride that I have enjoyed from the first chapter of the first book. Wish it wasn't over but I enjoyed the way it ended. Start from book 1 and enjoy the roller coaster!

Patricia Eimer really has a knack for the humor in her writing. She writes incredibly well, and keeps her readers enthralled in the book. Even though the story is about angels and demons, they seem to be living right along with all of us. She actually makes you wonder if it could really be a possibility that they live among us and we just don't know it. I loved the story about this dysfunctional family that has all the same everyday problems we have, with a twist. They are angels, demons, and of course the devil and God himself. It will keep you in stitches, yet so into the story that you don't want to put it down. I loved the book so much, that I had to get the other books in the series she wrote. And of course they don't disappoint. Great job Patricia Eimer, you have found a way to make reading fun!!

This is a cute series where our main heroine is actually the daughter of Devil and a hippy witch. She has a sister whose ex-husband is an incubi. Her brother is the anti-Christ, son of Lilith. Oh, and he is engaged to be married to her best friend, who he turned into a demon. She is pregnant with his kid. God is her uncle and Jesus is her cousin. Her boyfriend is currently an angel and not just any angel, but he is now the leader of angels.

There is action, as Faith has to fight to keep the Angel of Death's powers, that she doesn't want, but has to keep from the evil, power-hungry archangel. There is also a ton of humor. For example, the baby to be born was call AC 2.0, for Anti-Christ 2.0. Faith's mom calls Lucifer, Louie. When Jesus get frustrated, he says, "in my name."

LOL funny! O.k. so I'm two books behind since this is the first book by this author I've read. I laughed through a good portion of the book. If you are religious with no sense of humor this book is nit for you. Angels that are not all that angelic and demons who have good in them. This book is so far off the norm you cant help but laugh at all the crazy characters along with an angel and demon falling in love. Faith is the devils youngest who works as a nurse in the picu and is in live with an angel. Matt is her boyfriend who has his own family issues. Nothing is what you imagine it should be which makes it all the more enjoyable.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review so here it goes. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have never read anything by this author before but she captivated me from the beginning. Faith is a hoot and so are all of the other characters in this book. Once I started I could not put it down. I actually had moments where I LOL’d and my husband looked at me like I was crazy. The story is about a definite must read it will have you thinking about Heaven and Hell and all the things in between while making you laugh and root on the most unlikely of characters.

Angels are Angels and Demons are Demons, and then there are the "inbetween" like Faith Bettincourt. I love that she is a nurse and works to keep her young wards from Death. That still doesn't stop death from trying, or get her in trouble with those who help souls along the way. She is a demon with a kind streak, and that duality messes up her love life. There just was so much going on with this story, and so many characters that I sometimes got lost, and found it hard to find myself emphasizing with moments that would give me that "oh, no!" feeling. Even so, the characters had character and I loved the action scenes. I received this arc in return for an honest review.

Book 3 in a series and I haven't read the first 2, so overall I rate this Meh.

Too many characters, it was too confusing trying to keep track of who is who or did what. Great writing, witty and very enjoyable to read. Fast paced, but too much so. With the amount of characters to keep track of, the plot moves too fast from one thing to another, so you feel breathless like you're running a marathon, but also always feel like you are behind the bulk of the runners, and never catch up.

I highly recommend starting with book 1, otherwise you'll be as lost as I was.

Wow this series was hilarious and weird at the same time. I was slightly hesitant when I first picked it up...I mean half demon daughter if satan? Slightly weird but then I'm open to reading anything so I wanted to keep an open mind. And I wound up reading all three books bak to back lol

I loved the family dynamics and J and Alpha were hilarious so was the devil...but I thought the relationship between Faith and Matt could have had a lot more fleshing out because they had very minimal interaction and we were just supposed to believe in their love without any actions.

Unique and Hilarious!
I really enjoyed. It was unlike anything I had read before. I laughed out loud a lot and loved all the characters. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves witty banter and a heroine that can’t seem to catch a break, but fight to the bitter end for what right.
So funny!

I enjoyed this Paranormal read. It was fun, especially after I figured out who was who. It is a love story between an angel and a devil, the life they lead and what happens to them. At one point, our devil is "Death" and is unable to touch anything, without it being killed. Our couple finds out how to overcome this, so that they may have their Happily Ever After.
