Benson's Cuckoos

Richard thinks he’s in luck when he snags a job at the cuckoo-clock factory, but things start to go wrong right off the bat. First of all there’s his boss, who doesn’t seem to have the strongest grip on reality and has an odd penchant for silly hats. Then there are his coworkers, who are alternately evasive and idiotic when asked about anything pertaining to actually getting work done. Finally there’s George, the employee Richard’s replacing, who supposedly quit but whose family has just appeared on national TV pleading for his safe return. It’s all adding up to a very strange workplace, and when the company goes on a retreat, everything spools quickly out of control.

Anouk Ricard is an author, artist, and stop motion animator. She was born in the south of France. She began the Anna and Froga series after moving to Strasbourg in 2004. Initially published in Capsule Comique magazine, the collections of strips were reprinted by Sarbacane to widespread acclaim.

Animals as characters in the office. Kind of reminded me of The Office or Dilbert. Office capers, with an idiot boss who is insane, unpredictable, one moment imposing strange rules, another breaking down, crying, firing everyone, then hiring them all back, etc. Familiar to most people, cathartic. Using the animals as characters in human situations is not new of course, but this one seemed to me like a more colorful Jason lite, without the irony or depth, but still cynical and somewhat edgy, pretty funny, likable.

Translation editor? Huh? Since when did Helge need any help? It's children's caliber reading and she may have the most translations of any I've read. So I went to check my three "Ana and Froga" titles and he is credited as well. Does Anouk write in some obscure French dialect? Why do I care?

this reminded me of Ed the Happy Clown in that it seemed to be written as it was going along. Benson's Cuckoos is a company run by an energetic madman in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, none of whom have a purpose to life, and each of whom let the tension from that come out in different ways. I liked it.

En voyant ce livre sur les étagères de la bibliothèque municipale, j’ai décidé de le prendre pour donner une nouvelle chance à Anouk Ricard qui, dans mes souvenirs, ne m’avait pas laissé un super souvenir de Anouk_Ricard.jpg, premier et unique BD d’elle que j’ai lue, il y a déjà quelques mois (je constate pourtant avoir mis 4 étoiles et un commentaire plutôt positif sur la page Goodreads…).

Ici, Anouk Ricard met son humour totalement décalé au service de la description du monde du travail et de la vie en entreprise où les personnages ont des relations curieuses, il y a beaucoup de méchanceté gratuite / d’agressivité, le patron est complètement lunatique et malaisant. Le fil rouge de la BD est la disparition d’un employé et la pseudo-enquête qui en découle. On y voit les médias manipulateurs (est-ce une dénonciation ?), des situations absurdes où personne n’a de crédibilité… J’ai tendance à trouver cet humour TROP décalé, j’ai du mal à accrocher… ça ne m’a pas beaucoup fait rire.

Cependant, j’adore son style graphique avec les personnages à tête d’animaux que je trouve très mignons (toujours dans le même style). J’aime beaucoup aussi le choix des couleurs.

Richard a un nouveau job dans une entreprise qui conçoit des concous. Seulement, le patron est fou, et tous les employés se comportent de manière étrange.

La BD est très drôle, avec son ambiance à la The Office. Les gags fonctionnent, surtout dans la première partie. Le problème est, je trouve, l'intrigue qui tourne autour de l'enlèvement d'un employé de la boîte, et qui occupe toute la deuxième moitié qui devient soudainement un peu plus sérieuse et moins gagesque, même si tout reste dans le registre de la parodie. En tout cas, c'est un peu moins drôle.

3'5 estrellitas. Se hace cortito, pero porque gustaría que se alargara más la historia. Apetece saber más de la vida de cada personaje. Es entretenido, con buen ritmo, gracioso... Tiene un final un poco precipitado, se podría haber tirado más de la goma. Pero nada, que no es un cómic que vaya a recordar en el futuro, pero sí es un cómic que reeleré (y como me habré olvidado, lo volveré a disfrutae igual).

Un canard bleu dépressif intègre la société Coucou Bouzon. C'est drôle et parfois les situations complètement absurdes sont aussi très familiaires. L'intrigue sur l'employé disparu ou viré ajoute juste ce qu'il faut pour apprécier la BD du début à la fin.
