Peggy runt een pension in het Engelse stadje Cliffehaven. Maar er gebeurt meer in het rustige stadje dan je denkt.

Het leuke aan deze boeken is het een never-ending story is, maar dan in een positieve zin. Je leest steeds hoe het eerder gaat met de personages. Ik raad daarom aan om bij het eerste deel te beginnen. De Cliffehaven-serie is luchtig, niet echt geschikt als diepzinnige lectuur. De hoeveelheid personages zullen je in het begin misschien doen duizelen 😵. Maar ondanks dat geniet ik van elke bladzijde. Het is een lange Netflix-serie, maar dan een boek. Langzaam ga je van iedereen houden. Van de stokoude oma Finch met een slecht gehoorapperaat tot de dramatische Cissy. Vele verhaallijnen die in elkaar overvloeien.

This novel somewhat reminds me of those British television dramas I’m so fond of. Lots of drama. It’s a good story full of (mostly) good people, people you come to care about as the story continues. The problem for me is it’s awful long and it’s nothing but drama and everyday life. Every story should have some of that, but I like a little something more in my books. I like to walk away with a good laugh or some new bit of knowledge. Though the story takes place during the war and the heroine works in a factory, there’s not a whole lot of detail about that stuff. Next to none, to be honest. Oh, they sit in shelters and they have rationing coupons, but I’m especially disappointed in the lack of factory life as that bit is what drew me to this story to begin with.

This is part of a series, but except for some references to Rosie and her problems, I never felt I was lost.

It’s a tad predictable. That has to be the second biggest downside, but it’s enjoyable enough that that’s not overly bothersome.

I was very easily able to get “lost” in the tale for four days. The heroines are Ruby and Peggy. Ruby is young and at first, I thought, “Oh no…a woman who lets herself get smacked around..ugh.” But she finds her backbone and then some. I think my favorite scene is when she stands up to Doris, but I digress. I appreciate Ruby’s story—battered wife trying to make it on her own, growing braver with each day, taking risks by up and moving from all she’s known and finding a job and a new home and opening up to people. Peggy is a strong older lady whose husband is off to war and has her own battles as her health declines and her home is bombed…but nothing…and I mean nothing stops this incredible woman from opening her home and her heart to other people, especially young girls in trouble, like Ruby.

Peggy is a fabulous role model.

We get brief looks at the other girls, such as Rita, who rides a motorbike and works as a firegirl, but you have to read their books to get their stories. This just offers teasers of sorts.

Excellente lecture que j' ai dévoré, qui peut être lue indépendamment des autres tomes.

‘Voor altijd’ is alweer het zesde deel in de ‘Een veilige haven’-serie, en ze zijn stuk voor stuk pareltjes om te lezen. Ik kijk iedere keer weer opnieuw uit naar het volgende deel. Ondertussen zijn er in het Engels reeds achttien delen verschenen van deze serie, dus voorlopig kunnen we nog even vooruit in deze serie.

In dit zesde deel starten we in Londen, waar Ruby in een appartementje woont en het erg moeilijk heeft, omdat haar man Ray haar kort houdt en haar regelmatig mishandelt. Ze is nog herstellende van haar laatste mishandeling, maar omdat haar man vindt, dat ze kan gaan werken in het café, zal ze hoe dan ook moeten gaan. Je merkt meteen dat Ruby het absoluut niet makkelijk heeft en veel te stellen heeft met haar echtgenoot.

Als je het boek opent valt meteen op dat er deze keer een stamboom voorin het boek zit. Dit is wel een leuk extraatje om even terug te kijken, wie wie nu alweer is in de familie van Peggy en Jim en hoe de verhoudingen zijn. Echter deze heb je niet nodig tijdens het lezen. Achter in het boek vind je ook nog een plattegrond van Cliffehaven. Door de beeldende schrijfstijl kon ik me Cliffehaven altijd al levendig voorstellen, maar door de plattegrond heb je een nog beter beeld van het kleine plaatsje en hoe alles strategisch ten opzichte van elkaar ligt. Ik vraag me dan alleen weer af, waarom wordt dit pas in het zesde deel toegevoegd wordt, want in de voorgaande delen heb ik dat nooit gezien.

Als ik in een boek van de ‘Een veilige haven’-serie ga lezen heb ik altijd een gevoel van thuiskomen op het moment dat we in Cliffehaven aankomen. Dit is ook nu weer het geval. En ondanks dat Ruby niet meteen in pension Beach View terecht komt, is Peggy wel meteen op de hoogte van dit meisje en merk je dat haar moederlijke gevoelens al snel om de hoek komen, ook al kan ze zelf op een bepaald moment niet zoals ze wilt.

De personages zijn ook deze keer weer bijzonder goed uitgewerkt, waardoor je een goed beeld van ze krijgt. De bekende personages leer je ieder deel weer wat beter kennen en de nieuwe personages sluit je ook meteen in je hart. Zo is Ruby zo uitgewerkt dat je haar twijfels, de pijn, het gebrek aan vertrouwen bijzonder goed kunt begrijpen en heel goed aanvoelt onder het lezen en je echt met deze jonge vrouw meeleeft. Tijdens het lezen hoop je gewoon dat het allemaal goed komt met haar.

Ook is er in dit deel een bijzondere rol weggelegd voor Doris, de zus van Peggy. De altijd norse en autoritaire vrouw, krijgt deze keer ook een kwetsbare rol en hierdoor leer je Doris van een andere kant kennen en begrijp ik ook beter waarom Peggy toch zoveel van Doris pikt. Dit past echt bij het verhaal en ik heb genoten van deze verhaallijn.

Het is bijzonder hoe Dean er iedere keer weer een bijzonder verhaal van weet te maken, ondanks dat bijna alles zich in dit kleine dorp afspeelt. De delen zijn op zich losstaand te lezen, maar ik denk dat op een bepaald moment er dan iets te veel losse personages aanwezig zijn, die je wel allemaal kent, als je alle delen uit de serie leest. En dit is absoluut geen straf, want ieder deel uit de serie is een genot om te lezen. Ik kijk in ieder geval weer uit naar een nieuw deel in deze serie. En deze staat gelukkig ook alweer aangekondigd. Een mooie toekomst, het zevende deel in de serie, kunnen we in november verwachten.

This was the 6th book of the series which I’m reading in order without a break to another author. Arguably one of her best; though they are all brilliant, so far. Occasionally it takes a little while to get to the Cliffehaven bit as we are all introduced to the main new character. It still teaches me things about the privations of WW2 that I didn’t know.
The only minor constructive criticism is the overuse of the word ‘wan’ which crops up regularly in every book.
That aside this series is totally brilliant, already begun book 7 and hope it compares favourably with the first 6.

Ik luisterde deel 6 uit de serie ‘Een veilige haven’ die gaat over het reilen en zeilen van pension Beachview. In dit boek maken we kennis met Ruby die haar gewelddadige man Ray ontvlucht en in Cliffhaven neerstrijkt. Maar ook daar is het niet meteen rozengeur en maneschijn, totdat ze bij Peggy in Beachview terechtkomt. Ondertussen komen de bewoners van het pension natuurlijk ook nog gezellig langs en maken meerdere mensen het een en ander mee. Het is een soap eigenlijk deze serie, maar wel een fijne soap.

I feel that All My Tomorrows is a bit of a slow starter. However Ruby and Peggy were both instantly likeable and I found their stories very interesting.
The ending with Ray felt a little rushed, and it could easily have been extended.
This can be read either as a standalone novel or a part of a series.

Ellie Dean schreef deze serie over het pension van Peggie Reilly deze bestaat uit 18 delen waarvan er ondertussen 6 in het Nederlands zijn vertaald en uitgegeven. Onder haar pseudoniem Tamara McKinley schreef ze boeken die zich in Australië afspelen, het land waar ze geboren is.

Ik las de andere vijf delen ook en schreef: “Ellie Dean vergeet niet om naast alle grote gebeurtenissen tijdens deze oorlog ook de kleine handelingen van de hoofdpersonen te benoemen. Hierdoor staan ze op als echte mensen en lijkt het verhaal waargebeurd.”


In voor altijd maken we kennis met Ruby Clark die tijdens de oorlog in armoede leeft in Londen tot er iets gebeurd waardoor ze moet vluchten voor haar leven. Ze komt na lange omzwervingen terecht in het pension van Peggy Reilly en haar familie en gasten en vindt hier rust en liefde maar dan wordt ze door haar verleden achtervolgd….Kan ze wel blijven op deze nieuwe plek?

Als Peggy op een ochtend door Stan, de stationschef gebeld wordt dat er een meisje in Cliffehaven is aangekomen die plek nodig heeft wil Peggy haar in huis opnemen maar de volgende ochtend blijkt het meisje al een plekje gevonden te hebben bij een bekende. Als na een paar weken blijkt dat ze daar niet kan blijven stelt Peggy hart en huis open voor het meisje Ruby.

Als eerste wil ik Ellie Dean bedanken voor de stamboom van de Reillys en het plattegrond van Cliffehaven achter in het boek. Vooral omdat het steeds even duurt voor het volgende boek uit komt is het fijn om zo even terug te kunnen bladeren wie wie is en hoe Cliffehaven eruit ziet. Dan komen de verhalen die bij de personen komen vanzelf weer terug.

“Er zat een sleutel in het slot maar ze draaide hem niet om. Ze was hier veilig.”.”

Het is aan te raden om de serie op volgorde te lezen. Tijdens het schrijven geeft Ellie Dean wel de nodige details weer over de mensen in het pension dat je het ook zou kunnen laten….maar dat zou wel jammer zijn

Peggy heeft een vol huis omdat de dames uit de andere delen hier ook nog wonen. De ontwikkelingen gaan ook hier verder, de oorlog duurt voort en we krijgen door de gebeurtenissen in Cliffehaven er het nodige van mee. Vanuit gewone burgers verteld.
Het boek wordt op een gegeven moment echt spannend op meerdere fronten. Zo spannend dat de lezer alleen nog maar kan hopen dat de hulp op tijd zal komen. Dit is in vergelijking met de andere delen tot nu toe het spannendste deel.
Naast de spannende verhalen en momenten is er ook ruimte voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling en verdieping in de personages zelf. Ook Peggy’s zus heeft een grotere rol in dit boek en zij blijkt ook een menselijke kant te bezitten.
Het is mooi beschreven hoe belangrijke momenten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog ook weer aan de orde komen. Het lijkt op sommige momenten zo dichtbij te zijn.
Door alles wat ze heeft meegemaakt laat Ruby geen mannen meer toe in haar leven en de lezer krijgt goed mee wat het met haar doet als ze bijzondere aandacht krijgt van een man die het beste met haar voor heeft. Is er wel ruimte voor romantiek tijdens een Wereldoorlog?

Dit alles maakt dit weer een heel mooi en spannend deel van deze bijzondere serie.

J'avais beaucoup aimé le précédent tome. Les personnages étaient extrêmement attachants alors j'étais contente de pouvoir les retrouver !

Lors de ma lecture du dernier tome, j'avais eu du mal au début face à la multitude de personnages, pensionnaires de la pension du Bord de Mer...Cette fois je n'ai pas ressenti cela du tout ! J'ai très vite retrouvé mes marques et j'ai tout de suite été heureuse de retrouver cette belle ambiance pendant cette période sombre.
L'entraide est le maitre mot de la pension du Bord de Mer et c'est ce qui me plait énormément.

Mais comme pour chaque tome, on a droit à l'introduction d'un nouveau personnage. Avec L'avenir nous appartient, on fait la connaissance de Ruby. Une jeune femme londonienne mariée à un homme violent. C'est parce qu'elle veut lui échapper qu'elle va se rendre à Cliffehaven un peu par hasard.
Si dans un premier temps l'accueil qu'elle va recevoir est assez mitigée puisqu'elle se retrouve dans une famille dans laquelle le mari est assez entreprenant... Ruby va vite trouver refuge auprès de Peggy et des pensionnaires de sa pension du Bord de Mer !

Ainsi on continue principalement l'histoire de Peggy, de son bébé, du bougon Ron, de la vieille Cordelia...Tout ce beau monde doit continuer à vivre malgré le climat anxiogène de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Et malgré ce climat, le récit respire la bienveillance et la bonne volonté !
A chaque catastrophe et malheur, les pensionnaires sont présents. Et pour l'époque, sans la présence des hommes, l'entraide est essentielle.

D'ailleurs j'ai trouvé que les histoires des pensionnaires étaient plus présentes que celle de Ruby. Ce n'est pas un problème puisque j'étais plus qu'heureuse de passer un moment avec chacun d'entre eux. Mais je pense que c'est quelque chose qui doit être soulevée car les mésaventures de Ruby sont bien présentes mais pas autant que ce à quoi je m'attendais !

En tout cas je n'ai pas vu les pages défiler. Arrivée aux dernières pages, j'avais déjà le cœur lourd de devoir quitter la pension remplie de bonnes ondes du Bord de Mer.
Il me semble qu'il y a d'autres tomes et je suis impatiente de voir comment va évoluer la situation de la pension... mais j'ai également hâte de découvrir quel sera le prochain personnage que nous allons rencontrer.

I bought several of the books in this series a while back, and meant to spread them out a bit and not read them all at once, but I couldn't resist picking this one up as soon as I finished the last one. I was most definitely not disappointed. This book introduces us to the delightful Ruby, who is married to an abusive man in London's impoverished East End. When Ruby is forced to flee her husband after a particularly violent episode, she gets on a train to Cliffehaven without having any idea where she is going or what she will do when she gets there. After a false start or two, her life of course intersects with that of the Reilly family of Beach View Boarding House. The Reilly's are having troubles of their own as matriarch Peggy is adjusting to life without her husband Jim, who has gone off to war, as well as dealing with some health problems, but there is always room for one more in the large "family" that Peggy has adopted into her life.

This book is a little different than the others in the series in that it doesn't really focus on any particular aspect of the war. While the war is constantly in the background and shaping the events of the novel, the focus is on the characters and their personal and domestic problems. It has less war and more drama than the previous books, and I actually think this is somewhat profound, as it shows that after three years of war people have become used to it, and it has just become an inconvenient fact of life much of the time. One of my favorite things about this installment is that we get to look a little more closely at the lives of some characters who have previously been quite peripheral, which is one of the great things about a long series.

On a minor note, something that really irritates me about this series is the covers of these books, and sometimes the titles. I always feel they are being marketed as trashy romances, but there is really very little romance in most of them, and where there is romance, it is usually a small part of the story. They are just about ordinary people going about their lives in a time of great hardship and upheaval. A better cover style would better represent the content of these novels, and might make them appeal to wider audience. While I would definitely describe them as relatively light, and as chick-lit, I would not dismiss them as romance. And now that I am done complaining, I am off to read a more serious book or two, before rejoining this wonderful series in a couple of weeks.

Un nouveau tome qui nous campe une héroïne intéressante : Ruby, qu’on ne doute pas de revoir dans les prochains opus. Même si le début du roman est dramatique pour la jeune femme, la suite lui permet de trouver peu à peu la paix et l’équilibre. Même si elle fait des choix difficiles, j'aime beaucoup le personnage. J’ai également suivi avec passion les déboires de Peggy, qui très honnêtement ne méritait pas autant de malheurs. L’arrivée de Doris à la pension a également apporté un peu de changement dans l’histoire ce qui était bienvenu et a permis d’en apprendre plus sur la « méchante sœur de Peggy ».

J’aime vraiment beaucoup cette série, c’est du vrai bonbon pour moi de suivre leur aventure. Je ne veux jamais le lire trop rapidement car c’est comme quitter de bons amis. Cette fois-ci, c’est l’arrivé de Ruby qui débarque de Londres pour fuir un mari violent qui s’ajoute à ces personnages mémorables. Je m’ennuie déjà d’eux.

These books create a little family for you to run away and spend time with back in the day, during the war, where everything was so hard and rationed and unstable, but they still had love and friendship and such amazing teamwork. I love them! This was one of my favorites because of Ruby's story.
