He’s the new hockey team captain Also my roommate And now my fake fiancé...
When I discover my boyfriend is cheating on me, I quit my job, and move to take up a role as the PR manager for a hockey team. Only problem? There’s a mix up. Now I’m stuck sharing a flat with the grumpy, hockey captain. Worse? (or is that better?) there’s only one bed! Even worse? My ex too has moved, as the captain of the rival team, ugh! When my roomie realizes how much I want revenge he comes up with a plan. He asks me to pose as his fake fiancée on his trip home. In return I get to be seen with him, and show up my ex. I’ve sworn off men, there’s no way I can fall for him. But what happens when sparks fly?
This is a standalone roommates to lovers, fake relationship, one-bed, hockey romance with a possessive hero, a woman who doesn't hesitate to go toe-to-toe with him, and a champagne guzzling Great Dane who plays matchmaker by mistake. HEA guaranteed.
L. Steele loves to write romance novels featuring powerful men and strong women who bring them to their knees. When she's not writing she enjoys trading trivia with her filmmaker husband, watching lots and lots of movies, and walking nature trails.
there’s something that i can’t comprehend in romcoms; banalized violence.
context: ╰┈➤ the female main character stumbled and was about to crash on the floor. so, how did our chivalrous mmc react? he grabbed her by the waist and hauled her against him to prevent her from falling. i understand that she may have been uneasy during the action due to being plastered to his front. but, what's the point of slapping him violently because he helped her? that was definitely a HELL NO for me.
the absurdity of the situation was exacerbated by the fact that we had a detailed and colorful chapter about how his "thing" felt pressed against her. there is literally a full chapter dedicated to it, yes. the slap was both uncalled and a manifestation of hypocrisy after literally salivating and fantasizing about him.
also, the writing was somewhat blurry because of the lengthy inner monologues and the lack of transitions between scenes. at one moment, the never-ending characters were featured in a siting, and then they were seen in a new panorama without any explication or description.

many thanks to valentine pr for providing an arc in exchange of an honest review
"Be careful what you wish for. Sometimes, when you do get it, you don't know what to do with it."
Gio found out her boyfriend has been cheating on her. She broke up with him, moved out, and is now living with the London Ice-Kings as their PR manager. All sounds good right? Wrong. Because she did not count on Rick Stone AKA the new captain of the Ice Kings. And her new worst nightmare… That is until they reach an agreement…
"How can you hate a man and yet be attracted to him so much?"
Rick Stone. Ex-military. Ex-bodyguard. And the new captain of the London Ice Kings. He's always wanted to play hockey, but that dream died along with something else. So when the opportunity comes up to captain the London Ice Kings and get closer to a certain PR manager… Rick jumps at the opportunity. And when Rick comes up with a plan to benefit both Gio and him… Well… Let's just say be careful what you wish for 😏
"I allowed my emotions get the better of me in accepting the role. But now that I have, nothing is going to stop me from winning the League."
I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
✨ 4.25 stars ✨
Gio and Stone have an agreement. One that is supposed to help them both. But you know what they say about carefully laid plans? Or maybe not so careful…
"Everything has come together… but for this all-consuming chemistry between us throwing a wrench into my plans."
I did not realize that I needed an ex-military caveman MMC paired with a PR manager sassy and in-control girl romance until L. Steele provided me with one and I loved the match up!! (I know it is very specific but you know what I mean).
"You know what they say about the boy in the playground who pulls at your braids? He's the one who likes you the most."
I connected so much with Gio, the need to be in control, always afraid that you are doing the wrong thing but still standing up for yourself when needed. And the lists!! OMG if you ever need to know what my alarms look like during the day it is literally Gio's lists.
"It’s easy to spot the problem when you're not caught up in it."
Then we have Rick Stone. To say Rick Stone is protective/possessive is a TOTAL UNDERSTATEMENT. I mean put a caveman in hockey gear and you get Rick Stone and for some reason I loved it so much!! I mean the protectiveness, the spicy talk, the hand-necklaces… Everything was working for me!!
"Unless you want me to give you a hand-necklace… but that'll be when you ask me for it."
🎵 "Drunk in Love" - Beyonce 🎵 "Hate Me" - Nico Collins 🎵 "Ocean Eyes" - Billie Eilish 🎵 “Stupid Cupid” - Jenna Raine 🎵 "Break My Heart Myself" - Bebe Rexha 🎵 "golden hour" - JVKE 🎵 "Here" - Alessia Cara 🎵 "No Control" - One Direction 🎵 "Boom Clap" - Charli XCX 🎵 "she calls me daddy" - KiNG MALA 🎵 "Hot in Herre" - Nelly 🎵 "Gives You Hell" - The All-American Rejects 🎵 "Heather" - Conan Gray 🎵 "prom queen" - Beach Bunny 🎵 "Boyfriend" - Dove Cameron 🎵 "the Audacity" - Emelyn 🎵 "Cinderella Snapped" - Jax 🎵 "London Boy" - Taylor Swift 🎵 "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" - Kylie Minogue 🎵 "Make Me (Cry)" - Noah Cyrus 🎵 "Fallin'" - Alicia Keys 🎵 "Marry You" - Bruno Mars 🎵 "If I Can't Have You" - Shawn Mendes 🎵 "Don't Blame Me" - Taylor Swift 🎵 "Ruin My Life" - Zara Larsson
And trust me, Rick Stone can do dirty talk…
"Spread your legs… don't make me repeat myself."
"Fuck, baby, you're making it difficult for me to control myself."
This book just didn't work for me. It's all over the place and there's too much going on for me to feel any connection with the story.
In just the first 10% we have a champagne guzzling dog, a hero who is (seemingly) an ex hockey player turned special forces turned bodyguard.
And now he's the captain of a new hockey team in London (after agreeing to take the job seemingly to irritate the heroine) who will be living in one house with the entire team...and the female heroine PR rep...for bonding.
And there aren't enough rooms so she's going to have to share with the hero...who she (of course) doesn't like but has great chemistry with.
Let's just ignore the HR nightmare of an employer forcing a female employee to share a room (in a house paid for by the employer) with a man. Indefinitely.
There are just too many tropes in this for me to believe in the characters as it never seemed to tell a story but just kept jumping from trope to trope.
Tropes: marriage of convenience 💍 enemies to lovers 🔥 forced proximity ✨ fake relationship ❤️ workplace 🏒 one bed 🛏️ spicy 🌶️
This was an enjoyable hockey romance with a lot of spicy scenes!
I’ve personally already enjoyed other books from this author and am really looking forward to her upcoming releases. 🫶🏻
This story follows Gio(rgina), she decides to move to London, away from her cheating ex and become the new pr and marketing manager for a new ice hockey team.
She really hates the new captain of the team, Rick, until he has a proposition for her that she can’t turn down…
I loved how obsessed and possessive Rick was about Gio!
The banter and chemistry between them was next level!
Thank you to Valentine PR and Laxmi Steele for both providing me with this copy. All opinions are my own.
This is feeling like a 3.5 stars for me. I really wanted to enjoy this more but it took me longer than I'd like to actually connect with the characters and want to root for them. I honestly didn't love Rick or Gio to begin with, but eventually I came to enjoy their relationship and dynamic. This had all the tropes that I love so I definitely think that helped out in the end. It was an angsty and entertaining read, I just wish I had liked the characters earlier on so i could be more invested in the story. Thank you to the author and Valentine PR for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
i really wanted to like this one because i love hockey romance but i just straight away wasnt vibing with fmc and the writing style. it just wasn’t for me but i hope other people love it!
okay. i’m being brutally honest. this book was SO confusing. it was like i started reading at the 10th chapter or the second book because it just threw me in. it’s like the author expected me to already know the characters. the relationship between the two main characters honestly didn’t make any sense at all. like they hated each other from the minute the met i guess? but were also attracted to each other? he didn’t talk to her first before telling everyone they were engaged, and he only did it because she called the cops on her sister like 10 years ago? it’s makes zero sense why he did what he did. the writing also felt very fan fictiony to me. there also weren’t any trigger warnings anywhere! so if you want to read this book, TW for: ed, sa, and abuse. they aren’t the focus of the book but they are brought up MULTIPLE TIMES. i was so excited to read this book and was so underwhelmed. most of the things they said and did to each other just grossed me out. anyway, don’t read this.
Got all of 3 pages in (after the PAGES AND PAGES of front matter which should have been red flag #1) and i just couldn’t do the writing style. It felt very 13-yo who just discovered romance books on wattpad-esque I couldn’t do it
This is one of the books that I struggled with a lot sadly. Even though I loved the tropes and I was excited to read a hockey romance with them, it didn't live up on my expectations. Since I started reading this story, I realized that the writing style didn't work for me. It felt very undeveloped and the protagonists were acting like immature teenagers. I'm sorry to report that this didn't work for me and because I didn't want to DNF it, I just skimmed through it, because curiosity ate the cat and all that. I hope it matches someone else's vibe, but it wasn't it for me.
In the first 10% there was a lot going on, too many characters to wrap my head around and it was a bit all over the place in trying to figure out where they were. The mention of her shoes and also strawberry blond hair was 3-5 times.
Lastly Gia thoughts about the multiple men was anything that walked was hot huge and delicious. I don’t understand why she let him lift her up in the gym it just seems too fast. Also the way she though about Rick he is an “Asshole or douchbag” was a lot…
"If I remember correctly, I told you to go to hell," I scoff. “Only if you follow me there. Come with me, and I promise you, I’ll turn it into the kind of heaven you read about only in your books." There were so many quotes in this book that I absolutely loved, but this one had been laughing out loud and had my dogs looking at me like I was crazy. I absolutely LOVED this book! There was so much to unpack, yet you see the exact moment both Gio and Rick realize they are in love with the other. The roller coaster Rick send you on 😳 one minute you love him, the next you want to throttle him, the next you feel for him, the next you want to beat him about the head with a shoe, to finally fall in love with him. There was also times where I wanted to shake Gio for not speaking up and telling him how she felt. The epilogue with Mira and Edward…omg 🥵🥵”how are you at following orders?” Let me tell you I ran to the next book!
I was really attracted to this book, as most of the tropes I love are here: enemies to lovers, hockie romance, forced proximity, one bed, fake relationship, but...
But, the book was a bit too difficult to get into at first, maybe because even though it was a standalone, there were so many connecting things and cameos from previous books, which made it complicated to follow or understand what was going on.
The story is about Giorgina, who is hired to do the PR of a new hockey team in London. Rick is the captain of the team - an ex hockey player, turned marine, turned bodyguard. This part seems a bit too chaotic.
Overall, this is not a terrible book or a bad story. It definitely has darker themes and mental health rep, and spice. A lot of spice. If some things were simplified or even reduced, it could have been a more enjoyable story.
Thank you to author L Steele for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Gio just took the PR position at the hockey team, and she left her job and cheating ex boyfriend. She has to work closely with team captain Rick who is a grump and she can’t stand him. The attraction between them is intense, but they work together and neither want a relationship. Gio’s ex boyfriend follows her to England and is the team’s rival. Rick says that they are engaged and end up sharing a room. They both have secrets. Can they be together? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing book. Love Gio and Rick two very strong characters. Great supporting characters. This story has everything sarcasm, twists and turns, and angst. The spice is so good.
didn’t even bother forcing myself to try and finish this. if you’re looking for a good hockey romance, save yourself some time and start somewhere else
Synopsis: Gio has decided to take a position as the head of PR for a new hockey team in London. She needed a change after she walked in on her ex-boyfriend cheating on her. While she is prepared for hard-headed hockey players, she is not prepared for Rick.
Rick is coming back to hockey after an amazing career in the NHL and then some time working in the military and private security. Nothing gives him the rush quite like being on the ice. He has a very protective shield over Gio and is not okay with anyone ever looking at her.
When there is a mishap with rooming, Rick and Gio discover they have to share the master suite. While Gio is absolutely appalled, Rick finds the whole thing quite satisfying. Both of them have been fighting their attraction for one another and this is just going to make it ten times worse. That is, until the end up pretending to be engaged in order to mutually benefit them both.
Then it's game over.
Review: I am always down for a sports romance. The Ice Kiss was a great hockey read full of all of your favorite tropes:
-Fake engagement -Hockey Romance -Enemies to Lovers -Forced Proximity -One Bed
There were so many parts that felt super unrealistic, but I had to remind myself this is fiction, of course it isn’t going to be realistic! Gio got on my nerves with her “oh my gosh did I just say that” that was constantly scattered throughout the book. I wish this book had been a little shorter, it felt dragged. I love the “touch her and you die” vibes Rick gave off but felt like maybe he took it a little too far at times.
So if you are looking for a good alphahole romance with a romantic grump who would do absolutely anything for the girl he loves, this is the book for you.
Gio takes a job as London’s newest hockey teams PR manager when straight away we see a strange enemies to lovers with her and Captain Rick ‘stone’ Mitchell butting heads on the off bat, when all the hockey team decide to move into a house for ‘bonding’ with one less room that leaves our girl Gio sharing with alphahole Stone.
I went back and forth on what to rate this book between 3 and 4 stars but ultimately landed on 3 stars. I honestly had a hard time getting into the book it seems to all be happening at once with multiple characters and nicknames that was hard to keep track of. The running of the hockey team seemed to confused me slightly with the GM being a player and the captain practically running the team but I moved past it pretty quick.
Watching the relationship between Rick and Gio unfold was amazing. The way the whole fake fiancé came into the book was really funny to watch the two figure out and the twist nearing the end of the book had me on the edge of my seat I honestly couldn’t believe it!
This is an Arc review, thank you so much to L.Steel and valentines pr for this opportunity!
Tropes: ✨Steamy Hockey Romance ✨Enemies to Roomies to Lovers ✨Fake Engagement leading to Marriage of Convenience ✨Former marine turned Ice Hockey Captain with a wounded heart ✨Forced proximity ✨One bed ✨Possessive Alphahole British hero
Now that u saw the tropes what are u waiting for ???? I mean- these tropes are 🔥🔥🔥
Let’s be honest for a sec, I liked the story, the plot and the writing were quite good. The book was just a bit too long and it was kinda hard to get into it at first but other than that it’s a great book.
if i could give this book a zero, i would. i read this almost a month ago and have not brought myself to write this review. truly the craziest plot (that never was a plot) to ever exist. if you chose every wattpad farfetched trope and did it as poorly as possible, you might end up with this book. i thought it couldn’t get worse, then he tattooed her teeth marks on his penis.
This book felt as long as the moth of Janurary feels. Why did it need to be 400 pages. It didn’t. Not a fan but hate not finishing books. Rick and Gios relationship is a unique one. Not the biggest fan of it but who I am. Wanna be 50 shades.
I had a fun time with this book, always enjoy a hockey romance. Didn’t feel connected to the characters sadly but I enjoyed a few scenes Rick and Gio relationship became more enjoyable later on. At first i didn’t love them, this book had a lot of trope I love so that definitely help me out. Love the spice and dirty talk tho 👀
Tropes enemies to lovers, hockie romance, forced proximity, one bed, and fake relationship
How beautiful is this cover ?! Now while I’m not a big sports romance reader I am a BIG LSteele fan so I just couldn’t pass this up when it came my way 🥰📚and I must just say that when I was done I was keen to watch ice hockey 🤣and where I come from it’s not a sport that’s really played but it’s ok I can live through my book 😉🥰
Captain of the London Ice Kings , Rick Mitchell aka “ Stone “ cones to Giorgina’s aid before she hurts herself in what was actually a hysterical moment 🤣and you can feel the tension and you can see the alpha come out and I just know I’m in for a treat
Giorgina I loved her the moment I met her ! I mean hello she’s a reader !? I love how she’s listening to an Audiobook (with reference to to the author )and then and her mind is still there when she comes across Rick and he has bubbles ( oh yay) but before she can even pass a bubbly sip to her lips she almost gets taken out by a bubble loving Great Dane (Tiny) 🥰🐾🤣😉 but before she can face plant yummy hunk a chunk man Rick comes to her rescue 🔥😉❣️🔥 Giorgina is the PR and marketer for The London Ice Kings and I have a suspicion that she and Rick are going to melt the ice 😉🤣🥰🔥(pardon the pun)
Rick comes up with an announcement that they’re engaged ! Some buy it , some don’t buy who cares love it 🤣🥰🌸 it was supposed to be a win win but it turned to matters of the heart very quickly and man these to could melt glaciers ! I loved hard , laughed hard , blushed hard , yes I even cried and I enjoyed every moment on and off the ice !
Love the reference to old friends from previous reads ❣️📚
A few favourite moments
“ …. I work myself into a tizzy and end ip talking to myself - a sight that draws strange looks from people near me .” 🥰
Rick and Gio are talking and he asks if she walks around with a dictionary in her head 🤣🫣and she says no she just likes her words so he sees the gap and asks her what her favourite book is and then slays it when she tells him I mean like he seriously impresses her and then to put the cherry on top he shared about his granny and her smutty reads book club ( I remember her she’s a gem and hello this is where I lost my heart to him he bought her a new kindle ! Gio this man is a keeper 🥰🥰🔥🔥
I'm not a big fan of sports romances but, I've got to say...I loved this one. L. Steele never disappoints. The H is a hockey player, the h is the new PR manager for the team. But these two have history and it's not the best. The nicest thing you could say about it, is that it was antagonistic. If you've read L. Steele's previous novels, (Declan & Solene's story in particular) you'll have already met Rick (H) and Gio (Giorgina, the h) and know exactly what I mean.
Circumstances find both in England; him to lead the new hockey team and her as the team PR manager. Both have reasons to want to avoid relationships, but the attraction between them can't be denied. But just when you think things are heading in the right direction, a cog is thrown into the works...you know it's there, you just don't know what it is. And now you're wondering...what the hec it is and what will happen when it's revealed? When it finally is, and what happens after, will throw you for a loop.
These are two people who have past issues: She's always had only herself to rely on from a young age. Trust didn't come easy to her, and the one time she trusted, she was betrayed which precipitated her flight from California to England. He suffered losses in his past and carries tremendous guilt for one of those losses. Both have to deal with their past issues and learn to trust, forgive and feel worthy of the others love before these two get their HEA! I loved both these characters and he groveled so poetically! The emotions between these two were off the charts.
I also loved visiting with old characters (some of the Seven, Michael Sovrano and JJ). And I particularly loved their interventions...these wise older men, who have been through their own relationship trials (you can read about them in Steele's other books), giving their learned advice to our struggling hero. And I can't forget Tiny, the loveable, champaigne loving, Great Dane. He's always good for a laugh and yet he also seems to read people well and know when he's needed. 5 stars for this one!
This book delves into the world of Giorgina as she takes on the role of PR manager for London's newest hockey team. Right from the start, sparks fly between her and Rick, and their initial clashes escalate to another level. Their story takes an unexpected turn as they find themselves entangled in a fake engagement, a situation that promises both humour and complications.
Throughout the book, both Giorgina and Rick grapple with their true feelings, and while their dynamic is captivating, Rick's behaviour can be quite perplexing. His back-and-forth actions create some tension in their relationship, which might not be everyone's favourite aspect of the story. A least it's not mine, it just makes the book so much longer. And it's really unnecessary IMO.
Unfortunately, in the end, Rick ends up hurting Giorgina and breaking her heart, leaving her in a painful situation. However, he's not one to shy away from grovelling to make amends. Despite the moments of turmoil, his willingness to make things right is noteworthy.
One aspect that might leave readers wanting more is Giorgina's unhealthy relationship with food. Rather than being swept under the rug, it would have been beneficial to see this issue addressed more thoroughly.
I would like someone to sit with me and explain what this book was all about. Because, my loves, I am officially lost. I've never read a mess of tropes bigger than this one. We get enemies, he falls first, one bed, fake marriage, intimacy "50 shades of Grey" style, revenge, "you touch her, you die"...she is supposed to be independent, to be in control (his words, not mine), but she is definitely not. We never get to see her doing her job, ever. Even the hockey player never actually plays hockey, apart from the last game of the season (?) Some scenes finish at some point, and the next chapter begins in the opposite one. Like... no line, you know? I saw some reviews before getting into the book, and a lot of them said that they didn't finish the book or even got to the middle, and now I totally get it. It is the kind of book that made me go back to read the last two pages of the last chapter to make sure I didn't sleep in between chapters... really. I'm always hyped when the topic is hockey and fake relationships, and I was so sad that this one disappointed...
Ice Kiss? No, Angry Fire. Rick is always angry. Angry at the world in general but mostly when anyone looks, talks, or especially touches Gio. Gio is always angry at Rick yet she keeps antagonizing him. Shots fired. He has this weird massive caveman possessiveness over her yet it seems like they've never met. I felt no chemistry between them and didn't really like either of them which is one of many reasons I'm not a big fan of this book. When they are forced to share a room at the team house, Rick blurts out that he and Gio are engaged. He has a master plan in all of this but when it is revealed it is, um, odd to say the least. I did a lot of eye rolling. There are so many inconsistencies, continuity problems, plot holes, and convenient coincidences that it made the book just not work for me.
There are a lot of other characters from her other books in this story which makes for a nice close group setting but gets a little confusing at times.
DNF at 7%. This was suggested on tiktok and Facebook with positive comments so I tried, but it was not good. It’s weirdly hard to follow what’s happening! Like, there’s little to no transitions between scenes. And I guess this is part of a series, but if it’s marketed as a standalone then I shouldn’t feel like I’m missing huge parts of the story already! Why do these two hate each other so much? Immediately?? And I just really hate when the female main character is described as being super thin by the guy, it always feels icky. Literal line on the last page I read: “I’m not changing myself for anyone - least of all, a strawberry blonde with a waist so slim I could span it with my palm.” Blegh.
Unfortunately this book didn't hit the mark for me. There is just so much going on that at times it felt quite chaotic. With the many previous jobs Rick had to their past history I never felt like I got to know who they were until that last portion of the book and by that time I am not sure I really cared to be honest. From the grudge Rock holds against her to the circumstances that forced them to share a room it was a bit OTT. There were also so many characters in the story to try and keep track of that I lost the thread at times. I have enjoyed previous books by this author and will check out the next one.
The story made me smile right from the start. I just know that the MCs are going to be great. I loved their chemistry, sparks fly when they’re together. Also, the characters felt real, and the story realistic.
I liked reading where the MMCs grovel after they've realized they made a huge mistake but I've never read one where he did it twice. Well, it did turn our MMC into a poet.
I loved Tiny and I loved Grama. Also, we get to meet the other characters in her book.
