Demon young are cruel, especially to little imps like Az. No matter where she hides, even deep in the swamplands, her siblings eventually find her and hurt her, ripping off her scales and slicing her wings. Many demons don’t live to adulthood. Only the strong survive. And the clever.
Survival isn’t looking probable for Az, with eldest brother, Paquit, determined to rip her to shreds at every opportunity. When her other brother, Dar, proposes a trip through the angelic gates into the land of the humans, she jumps at the chance. Finally, a fun adventure safe from Paquit’s cruelty and attacks. Or maybe not.
Imp is a prequel novella to the Imp Series. It features the demon Samantha Martin as a juvenile, before she became Sam – a kind of young adult story for demons.
Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.
She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.
Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.
Might be spoilerish to those who have not read the first novels in the Imp series.
Imp is a coming of age novella, and a prequel to the Imp series. Here we meet Az/Sam as a young adult; only a few centuries old. She is busy living down to her potential as a mere imp, struggling to stay alive in a brutal world where demon children are very conscious of a pecking order/hierarchy.
While this novella might not be essential, it IS an enjoyable little story full of little hints and interesting information regarding Az's abilities, whispered potential status, and the social status of her (unknown) parents. (In regards to the size of her trust fund.) These little hints tell us why Az/Sam in the novels, is able to land a fairly surprising job title for someone her age/status, and why she has the ability to snag energy from an ancient angel (unheard of), drain sexual partners (to the point of death) and retain massive amounts of personal energy and maintain a very beliveable human form.
This novella is best enjoyed after having read the first two novels in the series. Certain derogatory statements regarding Az's future mating partners will make you snicker with delight, and her first sojourn into medieval Germany and first human Own was fun as well... Payback's a bitch;-)
A cute enough read and early on I really thought I was going to love this. Unfortunately those early sparks fizzled into indifference over the short span of this novella. Nevertheless, book 1.0 of this series was a free download, so I'll move on to that. I really want to like this series. I mean, all the elements for potential awesomeness are there. Let's see how it goes...
Impish demon fun but with a heart, great read, loved every minute!
A lowly demon does some amazing things that others won't believe. Travels to the human side and things get really strange. Lots of interesting characters, exciting adventures, dialogue, and humor. Plot is fast and well planned. Characters are well developed and intriguing. A wonderful, delightfully, devilish read.
I had lots of good things about this series so picked a few of them up for my Kindle and started with this short novella, although I was told it probably wasn't the best book in the series to start with. However, I really enjoyed it. It was totally different to any demon based books I had read before and I can't wait to read the rest of the series and find out how Az turns into her alternate self!
Az is a demon and lives in the demon realm with other demons, elves and other fantasy characters. She is an imp and not considered particularly strong or worthy of anything. She is constantly bullied by her brother and tortured immensely. With another brother she escapes to the human world and Owns a human (Takes over his body) and experiences life as an old man, who cannot walk very well, let alone do any magic or fly. She struggles to deal with this human's ailments and desperately wants to return to her own world, but she cannot open the demon gate alone so has to rely on her brother to help. Shame he was banished back to the demon world!
A fun, quick read that I am sure will lead into a great series too.
3.5 Stars... This prequel novella introduces a world filled with demons, elves, angels, sorcerers, and humans... We are introduced to Az, an Imp demon, as she struggles to survive in her vicious world only to discover she may not be as weak as her siblings perceive... After experiencing an exhilarating adventure she finds renewed hope in her fragile and unpredictable life ... An interesting story that certainly held my attention and intrigued me as to the direction this story may take; planning to continue with the series:)
I absolutely love Debra Dunbar writing in this book and this whole imp series ,I can't wait for the next die in 2017, these books had me laughing out loud so many times,I love Sam and Dar and would tell anyone and have told everyone I come across to read these books ! Thank you so much Debra ! Your an amazing writer. Please hurry and get some more out for us ,I'm moving on to your other series
nice prequel novella, short and with some bits of interesting information once you're already into the series. Life for our imp was not easy growing up and but she was always curious about life and sensation.
This prequel is a enchanting read about a young Imp. Still just a youngster in their eyes, without anything remarkable or pompous to flash around.. But sometimes looks can be decieving, and the one that is least expected to achieve anything is the one tht causes the biggest impacts. The way the story is told, and the caracters emerge makes you feel like you have known them for longer than just a few pages. I actually reflected upon that and had to do a double take to check. Impressive! This book does something genuinly magical since it in this setting brings up what is a sad truth for many young today, and I think this can be a good book, inspirational, entertaining and full of uniquely magical happenings just waiting to bring you along.

Heather's Notes Not a bad story but I am not sure I like Az (Sam). This series may not be for me. Plus I am pretty sure I know what Az is, so some of the suspense is also gone.
Az is a low level Imp Demon, the runt of the litter as far as her family are concerned. She's continually tortured (ripping her wings off, etc.) by her older brother Paquit. She has an almost insatiable hunger (for knowledge, and other less noble things) and, despite her naturally indolent nature, has luck, quick wits and a complete disregard for life on her side. When another brother, Dar, comes up with a way to use an Angelic Gate to visit earth she jumps at the chance, and that's where her adventure begins. "Imp" is a prequel to the series of the same name and I will definitely be reading on. It's too short to accurately judge but I reckon it is a solid 3 Stars.
For anyone who enjoys all things Sam, this is an excellent prequel! Of course, at the time this story is set Sam is a long way from being Sam. Here she is just a baby demon trying to survive growing up in Hel. Although she has barely begun to grow into her potential, she is still chock full of impish mischief and ready for adventure. As a fan of the Imp series it was great to read first hand about a few of the formative events in young Sam's life which are referenced in later books!
Reading this I had the strong feeling that I would have needed to read something else before to understand what is really going on which made the story quite confusing for me. But it was a nice read with funny moments and enjoyable "not-human" parts (I always like when the demons or such characters act without remorse or the typical human worth system - as they should since they are far removed from us).
I liked this early look at Sam, or Az by her demon name. There wasn't too much new here, but it was still a fun read. I was a little confused by the time on her visit to Germany. For a bit it felt modern, but then it morphed back into something a bit older. I enjoyed seeing sneaky Az start to figure things out.
Having just finished Elven Blood there was a bit that explained a few things in there as well, which was exciting.
I read this about 2 months ago. I don't like books like this, but it was an interesting take on demons. My taste is that there is no good demon and the author is trying to make out that Az the Imp is the heroine. The storyline is good and the plot has potential for a good series. This is just not in my tastes.
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy and this is my honest opinion.
This book starts to explain a little bit of demon culture, power levels, early childhood of demons, politics in Hel. It is an adventure story about the coming of age of an impact.
Az was a small imp demon who was bullied and teased before she learned to stand up for herself. This nice little story shows what childhood looks like for our favorite imp.
An interesting read although I'm not sure if I should have read some of the actual series so I knew the characters better. The idea of demons, elves and sorcerer's is very interesting.
It was nice to learn more about the MC and where she grew up. But the head hopping was weird and off putting. Also, the ebook version I have has so many typos and mixed up words it was difficult at times to know what the author meant.
Ok, this is one of those stories that are shot and sweet. I'm glad I read it. It's nothing crazy, but it is a fun read. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Normally I don't read little novellas in a book series but this one was amusing and gives a fun glimpse into Samantha's past when she was just a very young imp.
