Smith was born in Villa Park, Orange County, California. In interviews, she has said she realized she wanted to be a writer sometime between kindergarten and first grade, “when a teacher praised a horrible poem I’d written”, and began writing in earnest in elementary school. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987, followed by teaching credentials in Elementary education and Special education from San Francisco State University.

She taught kindergarten and special education for several years before becoming a full-time writer. Her first book, The Night of the Solstice, was published by MacMillan in 1987, followed by, Heart of Valor in 1990, and the 4-volume Vampire Diaries series in 1991-2. Three trilogies followed: The Secret Circle (1992), The Forbidden Game (1994), and Dark Visions (1995). The first installment of her popular Night World series was published in 1996, followed by eight more over the next two years. In 1998, Smith began a decade-long hiatus from writing, returning in 2008 with a new Web site and a series of new short stories. The Vampire Diaries series was reissued in 2007, followed by re-printings of The Secret Circle trilogy and Night World series in 2008/2009. The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor was also reissued in 2008. Three new Vampire Diaries installments were published in 2009 and 2010.

Smith lives in the San Francisco Bay area “with one dog, three cats, and about ten thousand books.”

Ok, so the series SHOULD have ended after Destiny Rising and should NOT have been continued by anyone other than L. J. Smith, but it didn't and it was so we have to get over it and read on, or let it go and walk away. Anyways, I didn't have high expectations for this book, but I had to read it anyways. I like that it starts out with everyone out of college and living "adult" lives now because more Dalcrest stuff would've been pointless. The bad guys there were already taken care of. Everyone's living their lives as I always pictured it (another bonus) and Katherine and Damon are friends? Good. He needed a somewhat distraction from Elena. Her plot in this book actually ended up upsetting me...can't say more than that. I liked the plot and the way the author (who isn't a ghost write anymore, so if you have SERIOUS problems with the books now, you have a name to curse!) brought a new twist to the villains, no more ancient old ones or vindictive Katherine, or "jealousy phantoms" (what was THAT anyways?!). So that's all well and good. The ONE things I CANNOT accept that I can't believe this new author had the gall to do and the end (if you've read it, you know what I'm talking about) made me want to throw my phone (which I was reading it on) and hunt down the publishers who let that happen. Now...it feels empty and I have no idea how it's going to continue on, and I'm sucked back into reading the next two books. Which was their plan all along.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother continuing this series. It feels like I've read a million stories about Elena Whiny Gilbert now and I'm starting to really lose interest. Every time I think this series has finally reached a conclusion, there's more. Yet I still continue to read it. Why? Because despite its dreadful heroine, unoriginal plot and eternal continuity, I still do love this series and I do actually want to see it wrapped up eventually. Unfortunately, my persistence means that I end up having to read incredibly uninteresting and extremely predictable books like this one. I keep hoping that these books will go back to being good again, but that seems like too much to wish for at the moment.

My main problem with this series is that I've completely lost interest in Stefan and Elena. I dislike their characters and I honestly couldn't care less what happens to them now. In fact, the only characters that I do care about are Damon (who is getting progressively worse with each book), Bonnie (who was barely in this one), Meredith (who is also getting worse with each book) and Matt (who gets the worst storylines ever). When L.J. Smith was still writing these books, the characters were dark and mysterious and multidimensional. Now they just seem completely flat and they're boring me, and the same thing is happening with the plots. Everything is so predictable and bland and nothing exciting is happening at all. There were some nights when I didn't even bother picking this book up because I knew that nothing exciting would happen, so I was probably better off just going to sleep. Whatever happened to the days when these books kept me guessing and made me feel something for the characters? Oh, that's right. The author got sacked and replaced with an anonymous amateur. What a pity.

All in all, this wasn't a fully bad book. It's a nice enough story and there is some twists at the end, although neither of them felt particularly exciting to me. My problem is that I don't like the new writer and that both the storylines and the characters are going downhill and that I just want this series over with. It should have ended at four books and yet we're now onto eleven. I just wish someone would save us all this agony and just end the series now. I don't even mind if all the characters die. I'm just fed up now and I don't want to watch a series that I once loved go on such a downward spiral and I just want it over now.

Firstly I’d like to thank Hachette for sending me this book to read and give an honest review. I have read and enjoyed all of the previous Vampire Diaries books (even when the ghostwriters took over) so I couldn’t wait to get started on this one.

This is a great series and I love everything about it – the vampires, the danger, the romance/love triangle etc. In the last book I discovered that Elena was a Guardian and she also became connected/linked to Damon (thanks to the other Guardians), he then left because Elena chose Stefan! But that isn’t the end of it…

This book picks up the story four years later and began with an email from Elena to Damon – she was warning him of an unknown danger that she felt was coming his way. It was clear from the email that she missed him even though she was able to feel his emotions because of their newfound connection. This connection between them was one of my favourite parts of the book because I loved seeing how each of them reacted to the others emotions.

A near fatal car accident involving Elena introduced Jack to the story and he intrigued me immensely, I came up with all sorts of ideas as to who he might be but it turned out that none of them were correct and the truth was even more exciting!

The characters have all grown so much throughout the series and they continued to do so in this book, I particularly enjoyed Bonnie’s witchy trip where she learned more about magic and how to use it. There were all the usual elements of the story that I love so much (danger, fighting scenes, old vampires) with some added extras (strange new vampires, a couple of very unexpected deaths and a shocking twist at the end that I hadn’t seen coming). I just couldn’t put the book down and ended up reading it in one day, I’m really looking forward to the next instalment!

This was another great read from this series, I was enclosed in a little Vampire Diaries bubble from start to finish.

Before I Read the Book...

I thought Pretty Little Liars was the series that wouldn't die (and it was) but COME ON GUYS how many bad guys do Elena and the gang have to face before they call it a day? Huh?

Just put Dalena back together and say the end, that's all you have to do.

Summary of the Story

So...the story begins four years later. I know: What the fuck, right?

While Reading

What I Thought

So.....uh....that was interesting. I know I said before reading that all I really wanted was for Dalena to be together, but I didn't mean

Okay, and those hashtags throughout the novel better not catch on with other authors because JESUS CHRIST ARE THEY ANNOYING. This is literature - granted, not good literature, but still - not fucking Twitter.

Ok...

IM BACK IN THE FUCKING BUILDING AGAIN

god i forgot about the #
#TVD11KatherinetheTease

these books are extremely short so everything important happens so fast, we found the bad guy 15 people died and the bad guy got defeated okay the end bye... girl come back what who died what lets not move on that fast from their death jesus. i cant believe that im saying this but if it was longer it would have been good.

#TVD11StelenaForever honestly i was always team Damon just because i just never really liked stefan and even tho i shipped damon with bonnie and kept it to myself... i still preferred elena to be with damon cause he is hot and a very interesting character. stefan is boring. fight me. i will not be silenced.

The plot was slow and meandering. I didn't like how it switched through all the characters throughout the book, because most of them didn't really have a lot going on that contributed to the plot. Which is all too bad because there were some interesting developments here that warranted more attention than they were given.

This book is written by a ghostwriter, and I couldn't help but feel like it was phoned in, earning an easy buck on the pre-made fan base L.J. Smith created. Kind of sad.

The only redeeming thing about this book is that they kill off a major character at the end. Granted, this is Vampire Diaries, so I wouldn't be surprised if this character is miraculously resurrected. But it was a pretty bold move, and I liked that.

Damon is the only compelling character in the cast. This series doesn't need to bother trying to develop Bonnie, Meredith, or Matt. Even Elana and Stefan are dull in comparison. Stick with Damon, that's the money right there.

I saw all the supposed plot twists in this book coming from a mile away. Nothing was surprising to me. And the character death was supposed to be super sad and emotional but I didn't feel anything. I was not sobbing like I was during the major death in Midnight and it's not just because I didn't care much for the character who died in this novel. It was because everything was written with a sense of detachment; the author did not put her heart into writing this death at all. Also, the funeral that followed was boring and everything the characters had to say about the deceased was a fabrication to make the dead guy look more heroic than he was. All in all the writing was subpar and the plot didn't hold my attention. I won't be rereading this mess in the future. Dehauled from my shelves. #UnseenSucked

*WARNING: The following contains spoilers*

I must start of by saying I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought it was going to be Stelena driven like the last 3 books but it wasn't, it showed how each of the characters have grown and developed but strangely Stefan remained the same.

I know I may be biased because since The Awakening I have had no love for Stefan but I always thought he was trying to be something he wasn't. Now, this book and all the previous books reinforced my first thought about him. That also continued with the relationship between him and Elena it always seemed so forced as if they were trying to make this more than it was supposed to ever be!

Anyways I digress... I was going to give this book 4 stars but because of the amazing ending I was sooo ecstatic! The ending alone deserved 5 stars. So I was okay with that it worth the extra star.

The writing was all over the place and some parts just didn't quite make sense

After The Hunters Trilogy which was total failure to me, I was about to rip my eyes out but in Destiny Rising I knew a lot would develop form that so I allowed my self to read this book and it was so worth it.

It doesn't matter now how I felt about the other books because they have redeemed my faith in the TVD books and I am willing to complete the series

Honestly, this makes me sick, the Stelena relationship was just to much and it needs more basis than what was presented in the last Trilogy and it also needs better writing.

All in all I have faith in this book because it has the potential to be great.

I love reading anything to do with the Vampire Diaries. There wasn't enough of Damon, and was surprised by the ending, but I cannot wait for book 2 of the trilogy. Thanks for keeping these characters alive in my imagination!

Finally! Stefan dies! Now the question is will he magically come back like Damon did or will Damon and Elena actually get together? I liked the whole idea of lab made vampires. That was cool. Solomon didn't impress me much but the ending was great.

What is with the characters names in this book anyway? Gabriel and Marisol are both characters in L.J. Smith's Dark Visions series, and Poppy is one of the mail characters in the first Nightworld book. Is there a reason we're recycling names?

20 points/100 (1 ¼ stars/5)

While not as bad as the last two books, this wasn't good, either.

The problem is, is there is no build up. I have no reason to care about anything thing that is going on. Things keep happening, things keep getting introduced, and then..that is it. They aren't developed at all. Everything that happened me just..not caring, even the death at the end of the book.

It's around 3.25/3.50 stars. It's slightly better than the previous series. I was excited that Katherine is back, I was expecting a lot of fun things from her. But of course, it's not meant to be. And of course, because the world is unfair, Stefan will be miraculously resurrected, but she won't. I was about to say good riddance to his loss. Book Stefan is even worse than TV show Stefan.

Amazing

I'm in awe I never imagined the story going like this. I binge watched the whole vampire diaries saga and this book was kinda like a back story novel where you can see how the story links and continues.
