Coming in March 2019 from Andrea Kane: DEAD IN A WEEK.

Andrea Kane is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of twenty-nine novels, including fifteen psychological thrillers and fourteen historical romantic suspense titles. With her signature style, Kane creates unforgettable characters and confronts them with life-threatening danger. As a master of suspense, she weaves them into exciting, carefully-researched stories, pushing them to the edge—and keeping her readers up all night.

Kane’s first contemporary suspense thriller, Run for Your Life, became an instant New York Times bestseller. She followed with a string of bestselling psychological thrillers including No Way Out, Twisted, and Drawn in Blood.

Her latest in the highly successful Forensic Instincts series, Dead in a Week, adds the Zermatt Group into the mix—a covert team of former military and spy agency operatives. With a week to save a young woman from ruthless kidnappers, this globe-spanning chase, from the beerhalls of Germany, to the tech gardens of California, to the skyscrapers of China, and finally the farmlands of Croatia will keep readers guessing until the very end. The first showcase of Forensic Instincts’ talents came with the New York Times bestseller, The Girl Who Disappeared Twice, followed by The Line Between Here and Gone, The Stranger You Know, The Silence that Speaks, The Murder That Never Was, and A Face to Die For.

Kane’s beloved historical romantic suspense novels include My Heart’s Desire, Samantha, Echoes in the Mist, and Wishes in the Wind.

With a worldwide following of passionate readers, her books have been published in more than twenty languages.

Kane lives in New Jersey with her husband and family. She’s an avid crossword puzzle solver and a diehard Yankees fan. Otherwise, she’s either writing or playing with her Pomeranian, Mischief, who does his best to keep her from writing.

Lindsey Hall has known who her father is for a long time, while her father's two children have only recently found out about her...At the reading of his will. A will that stipulates she's to receive a hefty sum, and an old mansion. Determined to refuse the house, and maybe even the money, Lindsay visit the old, abandoned, vacation home, and falls instantly in love, already thinking of way to restore it, and make it a home for her mother. To make the decision to keep the house even stronger, is Nicholas Warner, a real-estate developer wanting to buy the house only to demolish it, and build condos on the land...No way in hell, Lindsay will allow that.

But while Nicholas seems to accept her decision, there's someone else who's determined to make Lindsay change her mind about accepting her inheritance. By all means necessary, it seems. But who is this shady figure? Is it one of her step-siblings, determined to protect the family name, both of them? Or is it Nicholas himself, the very man who's seduced his way into Lindsay's heart?

Ooh, this was one heck of a story. Pity, it was so short, since the romance didn't really have time to evolve properly. As it was, it felt a bit rushed, and very whirlwind without much character development involved. It felt more like it came out of the left field, while, by the time it was finished, the two would've worked better as very close friends on their way to being something more.

But maybe that's just me.

Let's face it, the romance didn't have much time and space to take off, because most of that time and space was occupied by the mystery (yes, this was mostly mystery with a very suspenseful final part). And the mystery, let me tell you, was masterfully done. Although I suspected who the baddie was from quite early on, I don't know what gave that particular character away, there were still enough misinformation, red herrings, and sinister clues to make me suspect everybody. I even had my doubts about the hero (his seemingly about-face also came as a surprise without much intro, info, or buildup—it felt hasty and awkward), which is saying a lot.

I liked the characters, as much as I got to know them, I liked the pacing (spot-on and perfectly balanced between the calm and the storm), and I loved the mystery. The romance could've used some working on, or a few extra pages, though.

Lindsey Hall finds out that she's inherited a Georgian mansion and a chunk of change from a father that never acknowledge her growing up. She sets pride aside and accepts the inheritance, thinking to provide her mother with a new life. But her half-siblings don't want her to have the house, because of the emotional trauma it would cause their mother. Also, family friend and real estate developer, Nicholas Warner, wants the house for his own personal project, but he also frankly admits that he wants to get Lindsey in to bed.

A short little novella that definitely needed more length to pull itself off. The set up of the story, with Lindsey learning more about her father and the impossible situation that he was in and her mother's actions and acceptance of the situation were probably my favorite part. And the half-siblings - such bitchy, ambiguous villains - couldn't tell if they were homicidal or not. But my least favorite part of this was Nicholas and Lindsey's relationship...or lack thereof. They meet, she distrusts him and she sends him on his way, while he's all butthurt. Then he shows up and they're friends and she trusts him implicitly, even though he's clearly hiding something, has a secret agenda that he's not sharing and, for all Lindsey knows, would stop at nothing to get the house from her. But then she's in danger and Nick is the only one she'll trust, so they sleep together and then they love each other. The romance aspect of this went way too fast with too little justification for decisions and feelings. But the underlying structure of the story was pulled off quite well.

Had more mystery than suspense. An interesting plot with a good twist.

A little light but not bad

The book was a novella and you need to keep that in mind. There is very little build up or character development. The main couple goes from snarky comments to bed to love at a lightning pace. The action scenes were brief and far between.
This could have been a terrific full length novel. Andrea Kane does not disappoint, she just cut this book a little short possibly to fit in some constraints. However by making this a longer book we would have gotten more details on why main couple fell in love, more background on the villian and tied up other loose ends.

I actuallly think I read this years ago as part of an anthology. It was fun to re-visit. I enjoyed the two main characters and the story.
