Meet twelve-year-old Kitty, friendless bookworm and amateur sleuth. All Kitty wants is to gain her mother's attention, spend time with her miniature schnauzer Spade, and avoid Miss Perfect, Jessica Jones.
Kitty's world turns upside down when she finds a lost dog, and she needs Jessica's help to find the owner, hunt down a dognapper, and solve a murder.
Can you solve the mystery before Kitty? Will you spot the danger that awaits her?
Introducing Kitty Walker and her mischievous dog Spade in the first Dog Show Detective Mystery.
Charmaine Clancy lives in Brisbane, Australia and loves to create characters for mystery, fantasy and adventure. All her stories are fictional, except maybe MY ZOMBIE DOG (some say to this day you can hear the dog softly moaning, 'braaains').
Charmaine was born the year man walked on the moon, and if more aware of the event, she probably would have thought it was a great setting for a murder. She grew up in the big city of Sydney. Her early school reports advised disapprovingly that she was always 'daydreaming'. Obviously her teachers did not recognise and value the art of plotting. Despite this feedback, Charmaine loved studying and would later go on to University to gain her BA in Professional and Creative Writing. She has worked editing articles for magazines, but her favourite jobs have been dog grooming and teaching.
When not explaining the dangers of underestimating a fairy or the best spots to hide a body, Charmaine teaches high school English and sometimes runs creative writing classes for children and teenagers. She loves all things Agatha Christie and is often watching those around her with suspicious eyes; on the off chance they ever do commit a cleverly devised crime.
STORYLINE: Kitty Walker moves to a new town and immediately gets involved in dog showing. She comes in contact with a missing dog and follows a puzzling set of clues that lead to a trail of crime and revenge.
I LIKED: the feisty heroine of this book. Kitty feels like the genuine article, in that she has all the insecurities of a twelve year old. She’s new in town, resentful of being uprooted from her old digs and is the odd man out at school. Added to that, she has a pesky little brother who’s everybody’s favourite, a dog who won’t cooperate when he should and she can’t get anybody to take her crime-solving abilities seriously.
OVERALL COMMENTS: Dognapped? was an entertaining and educational read, with the added benefit of a crime solved at the end. I learned a bit about dog showing and the care of certain breeds. Clearly, the writer knows her stuff.
Ok, I like dogs - alot. And this followed immediately after a dog inspired, narrated read, but still my inner 11 something year old muse really enjoyed this spirited little tale about a missing little dog and the girl who learned to suppress show-dog-day nerves in order to solve her first mystery. It's not easy overcoming nerves, self-doubt, first time encounters with the opposite sex (we're just friends right?), murderers and disinterested adults, but Charmaine Clancy manages to help Kitty Walker through them all with a style and passion as dedicated as man's best friend. Well done. Great middle grade read.
Twelve-year-old Kitty is a dog lover and would-be detective. When things go wrong at a dog show, the situation tests her sleuthing abilities. Dogs are getting sick, being switched, and having their microchips taken out. There’s also a murder. Kitty’s a great character and I even liked Jessica, aka Miss Perfect. This is a cute, MG mystery book with excellent pacing and mounting suspense.
Kitty is nervous. She’s showing Spade – her dog at the local show in the country town they have recently moved to. Spade doesn’t behave well but Kitty wins a ribbon for her handling of her dog. While off taking Spade to the toilet she finds a wet and sick puppy. The vet says the puppy has diabetes. Who is the puppy? The owner says it’s not her dog. Kitty starts investigating the puppy’s story. Who does he belong to? Why was he abandoned? Is there is link with a local murder? I enjoyed the adventure and the dynamic between the characters. Recommended for MG
Brilliant, fast-paced writing. It’s an exciting mystery detective story in the world of the dog-showing arena. Kitty has a sharp eye for anything suspicious or Agatha Christie crime related. What better way to solve a tricky murder mystery, than with new friends with a common interest. It’s a great book to read to a whole class because of the suspense-filled, unexpected chapter turns. The scenes are so well set-up and moved so quickly that I couldn’t put the book down.
Let me come right and say it: I loved this book. Based on the premise alone I had high expectations for the level of adorableness that would be contained within its pages and I am happy to say that it did not disappoint.
What is the premise, you ask? 12 year-old Kitty Walker is a typical girl trying to find her way in a new town. Upon first arriving, her only friend is her miniature schnauzer, Spade (and maybe her little brother Matty, when he’s not too busy bugging her). At her mother’s urging she decides to enter Spade in a dog show and learn how to be a junior handler. It’s here that a lost dog who is terribly ill leads Kitty nose-first into the biggest mystery of her burgeoning sleuth career.
This book was filled with fun, mystery, humor, thrill and heart and kept my interest easily engaged throughout. The language is easy enough that most school-aged children will find it an easy read and yet there were a number of passages where Charmaine demonstrates her ability to turn a phrase. There’s a ton of subtle nuances that flesh out the characters we see and she manages to make the settings feel just as real. I don’t read a lot of children’s books but I get the feeling that subtle little highlights like that aren’t the norm.
The real heart of this story, of course, is Kitty. Charmaine captured her voice perfectly. I was a 12 year-old girl once upon a time and I remember what it felt like to be jealous of my mother’s work which kept her away from me or of my brother who stole all the attention. I remember my dad who managed to massively embarrass me without even trying and the way that adults treated me when they thought I had no idea what I was talking about. I remember that perfect girl in school who seemed to have everything and that boy who I secretly had a crush on. And I remember loving my dog more than anything else in the world and often feeling like my furry friend was the only one who really understood me.
Every emotion, thought, observation and question is spot-on and I can imagine a whole host of young girls relating to Kitty in an intimate way. This book will be a favorite in many a young library, I have no doubt.
It’s also a great starter-novel for your mystery fans. Kitty follow in the footstep of the greats with her note-taking, keen observational skills and intrinsic need to question everything. And this story has it all- theft, mistaken identity, random notes, misdirection and plots to conceal the truth and even murder. While the action is thrilling it’s not scary and I think younger kids will be just as safe reading this as older tweens.
All-in-all, I’d recommend it to a large audience because everyone can easily find something to love in here.
