A traditional fantasy novel with elves, goblins, threats to civilisation and so on, but with a bit of realistic grittiness that lifts it above the run-of-the-mill.

The hero, Tek, is likeable despite his faults, and there are other memorable characters like the irascible shaman, Gad and Tek's brave daughter, Lina. The peril seems as if it's going to be dealt with a bit too easily at the end, but then there's an interesting morally dodgy compromise that makes things a little less neat, and that may provide some tension in following books.

I don't read a lot of fantasy, but this one was enjoyable, if a little short. I expect I will read others in the series once they are released.
