His early writings, including a doctoral thesis on Geoffrey Chaucer and two volumes of poetry written in what were considered antiquated verse forms, revealed a career-long interest in historical literary modes and themes. Bengtsson was a prolific translator (of Paradise Lost, The Song of Roland, and Walden), essayist (he published five collections of his writings, mostly on literary and military topics), and biographer (his two-volume biography of Charles XII (Karl XII:s levnad) won the Swedish Academy’s annual prize in 1938). In 1941 he published Röde Orm: Sjöfarare i västerled (Red Orm at Home and on the Western Way), followed, in 1945, by Röde Orm: Hemma och i österled (Red Orm at Home and on the Eastern Way). The two books were published in a single volume in the United States and England in 1954 as The Long Ships. During the Second World War, Bengtsson was outspoken in his opposition to the Nazis, refusing to allow for a Norwegian translation of The Long Ships while the country was still under German occupation.
Bengtsson married Gerda Fineman in 1939. He studied at the University of Lund from 1912, receiving his licentiate in philosophy in 1930. He died in 1954 after a long illness.

-Un estilo mucho más contemporáneo de lo que su fecha original de publicación invitaría a pensar.-

Lo que nos cuenta. Tras un breve prólogo que nos habla de la llegada de sacerdotes y monjes cristianos al sur de Suecia, empezamos a conocer la historia de Orm, un muchacho joven y enfermizo que creció a finales del siglo X hasta un adolescente fuerte y rápido pero que no se embarcaba en las expediciones vikingas de saqueo por la preocupación de su madre, aunque termina en una de ellas por razones ajenas a su voluntad llevándole a recorrer diferentes escenarios de la Europa de comienzos del siglo XI. Novela originalmente publicada en dos volúmenes, el primero en 1941 y el segundo en 1945, unidos en la mayoría de las versiones actuales, al menos las que yo conozco.

Jag borde verkligen lära mig att göra någon typ av bakgrundskoll innan jag börjar läsa en bok…. Eller bara lära mig lägga undan boken när den är tråkig och liksom inte läsa färdigt? I vilket fall, som sagt: TRIST

Considering the genre and style I want to give the first book five stars. The second book lacks the pace and drama of the first one, but still worth three stars. So a combined four stars for this simple but surprisingly funny book about a red worm and his viking adventures.

Det här är fortsättning på Röde Orm, sjöfarare i västerled. Nu är Orm hemma efter alla strapatser som har hänt i första boken. Äldre, kristen och med sin kvinna skapar han sig ett liv på hemmaplan. Även den här boken fortsätter i samma skickliga narrativ, där författaren med enkla berättardrag möjliggör för läsaren att lätt skapa scenbilder. Lika så är boken berikad med många humoristiska inslag. Tempot är stundvis mycket hög och slutet av berättelsen slutar i exalterande action. Andrahandsintriger är många och små i form av minnen och karaktärernas berättelser. Språket är fortfarande ålderdomligt på ett sympatiskt sätt som passar bokens berättelse. En fantastisk historieskildring under tiden då asatron förde kamp mot den nya läran kristendom.
“Det är märkligt att vi nordmän sitta hemma så mycket som vi göra, fast vi veta detta och förstå oss bättre på skepp än andra och ha hela världen att plundra.”

“Blir det nu stiltje får de taga till årorna, och det brukar vara en sträng lek för ovant folk i sådan sjö som denna. Då komma de att tänka med saknad på hur de nyss fått spy i fred utan allt slit.”
Eftersom tidsspannet är långt, sträcker sig över ett helt liv, möter vi på ett spännande sätt flera av sidokaraktärer åter igen i någon annan av bokens sidohandlingar. Likväl blir vi bekanta med Orms barn vilka uppnår vuxen ålder.
Jag tror inte att jag någonsin har läst en så rolig bok som Röde Orm. För mig är det här en tio-poängare som passar alla åldrar.

The first part was better, in my view, with more viking action and less Christening. The tale of transformation (Orm going from heathen to Christian to revitalize his viking luck) is more compelling than the adventure of this book, where no real transformation happens. Even so, I enjoyed it as a viking romance with plenty of inventive flair. I'm particularly fond of Sone's seven sons, who gain immortality simply because they believe in the prophecy of their father, and then vow not to see their father again for fear that the enchantment may end.

“È questa la fine della storia di Orm figlio di Toste e della sua fortuna.”
Come è accaduto per il primo volume, la fatica a finire questo libro è stata parecchia. Parte centrale e parte finale non sono poi così male, risultano anche abbastanza interessanti, ma il blocco centrale mi è risultato piuttosto indigesto, di una noia assoluta. Peccato, avevo riposto in questa saga grandi aspettative.
Come è accaduto per il primo volume, la fatica a finire questo libro è stata parecchia. "Røde Orm" er det Arn-bøgerne prøver at være. Og Jan Guillou har helt sikkert læst den her bog og hentet inspiration. Den er bevist skrevet i en stil, der efterligner sagaerne og det gør, at sproget passer rigtig godt til historierne. Samtidig er bogen let at læse og byder på rigtig fin underholdning. Jeg strøg igennem den.

En fortsatt mycket behaglig och underhållande läsning om än inte i paritet med den fantastiska första boken. Oavsett mycket väl värd en genomläsning och de två böckerna skapar tillsammans en helhet som lämnar en varm känsla i kroppen.

Andra delen av Orm. Vet inte varför Goodreads endast har den danska titeln men sak samma. Vi får följa Orms liv efter hemkomsten från äventyren i första boken, där allt till en början ter sig relativt (för att va vikingatid) lugnt. Men såklart blir uppenbaras en möjlighet till stor rikedom som orm såklart inte kan tacka nej till och nytt äventyr nalkas. Överlag mycket bra bok och rekommenderar alla att ta sig an Röde Orm.

Röde Orm (The Long Ships) part I and II by Frans G. Bengtsson
These two books have been on my bookshelf for a very long time, maybe even 30 years! I can't even remember when I bought them. They are considered a classic in Sweden and tells the story about the Vikings in the 10th century. The books were written in 1941 and 1945 respectively and although written in a somewhat old fashion Swedish the books are surprisingly fresh. They are one of the most popular books in Sweden or at least it used to be.
It tells the story about Röde Orm (Red Serpent, red because his hair is red) and his adventures in the West and in the East. The first book is about his first trip (he is actually more or less kidnapped on board the ship) westwards. The aim is to find riches along the Normandy coast. Since it has already been plundered they venture further on and are finally captured by Al-Mansur in Andalusia. They work for him in his security forces and have to fight several wars before they manage to escape back home. The trip home takes them via England and Ireland before they end up in Denmark at the court of the great Viking king Harald Blåtand (Harald Bluetooth). Spending some time at the court Orm falls in love with one of the kings daughters, Ylva, and proposes. However, having no home, even if he has some riches, the king says he has to prove himself before he can earn his daughter. Furthermore, he has to be christened before he can marry her. These are the times when the first missionaries came up north to try to christen the heathens.
Orm sets out again to fight the English and to get their riches. After various adventures he comes to the king's court in England where Ylva is staying with her sister. Having won the fights the English king has to pay the Vikings and Orm marries Ylva, heads back to south of Sweden (Denmark in those days) to settle down.
The second book tells about the establishing of his home, his christening, his friendship with the priest Willibert who comes from the king's court to stay with him and try to christen as many as he can. He even builds a church on Orm's premises. Other friends from his Spanish days turns up, the neighbouring clans tries to live in peace and all is well. Then his long lost brother Are returns from his adventures in Miklagård (Constantinopel, present day Istanbul). He is blind, without tongue and one hand but manages nevertheless with the help of 'runor' (the Viking letters) to tell his story and how he managed to get his hands (before he lost one) on a golden treasure which he buried in the Dnepr river.
This is too good a temptation for the Vikings so Orm buys a ship, gathers a crew and sets of to capture the gold. Along the way they run into various fights, foreign tribes, meeting old friends and finally manage to get the gold and return home.
It is in its own way a fascinating book, telling in an understandable way the life of the Vikings and the times. You see how they were living, their homes, the violent times, the problem between the heathens and the christians etc. It is told in a charming way and the books were a much easier read than I expected. Then of course they live in the area in the south of Sweden where I grow up and some of the names are still the same. Makes it a little bit extra interesting.

Bindin tvö um víkingabóndann Orm rauða eftir Svíann Frans G. Bengtsson eru klassík í norrænum bókmenntum. Skemmtilega skrifaðar bækur sem gerast um árið 1000 og þýðing Friðriks Á. Brekkan á íslensku er hreinasta afbragð. Þessar bækur komu fyrst út á árum seinni heimsstyrjaldar og ég held þær hafi notið töluverðra vinsælda á Íslandi þó þær séu kannski gleymdar í dag (það ætti að endurútgefa þær, íslensku útgáfurnar frá 1946 og 1948 virðast fágætir gullmolar). Í fyrri bókinni lendir Ormur fyrir slysni í Vesturvíking og ratar í ótal ævintýri en kemst heim aftur að lokum, en í þeirri seinni berast leikar svo óvænt austur í Garðaríki, þar sem nú er Úkraína.
Nokkrum árum eftir útkomu þessa bóka sendi Laxness frá sér Gerplu sem líka var víkingasaga þó hún sé allt öðruvísi en bækurnar um Orm. Maður getur þó ekki varist þeirri hugsun að kannski hafi Halldór fengið hugmynd sína að einhverju leyti úr þessum bókum - en kannski er það bara vitleysa.

un grand moment de lecture ! du pur plaisir en compagnie d'un héros simple, humain et toujours plein du bon sens viking. On referme ce livre plein de bonnes résolutions : partir à l'aventure, se faire de bons amis, se trouver une jolie femme pleine de sagesse et... élever des vaches, ou brasser de la bière suivant l'humeur.

Röde Orm har varit med mig sedan tonåren då jag läste dem första gången eftersom mina föräldrar citerade dem regelbundet, "Det tog sin tid, men nu har han pissat färdigt" med mera. Och trots det gammalmodiga språket älskade jag dem från första gången jag läste dem. Detta bör vara närmare den tionde gången jag läser igenom dem och de är fortfarande några av de få böcker jag skrattar högt till när jag läser. De kräver nog dock att du har "rätt" typ av humor, min sambo tycket inte några av mina citat var skoj...
Men vill du ha en humoristisk bok om mycket pragmatiska vikingar i västerled och sedan i österled så se inte längre. Om du vill ha någon typ av realistisk vikingahistoria så bör du dock söka vidare.

Fullt så god som sin föregångare är den väl inte, men föregångaren hade kvalitet att ta av.
