Christopher Lang is a real estate lawyer. His boss Oscar Grant takes on some of the most high profile real estate cases. Oscar has a new client for Chris. His name is Russell Bridges. Russell wants Chris to come to dinner with his family and wants Chris to bring his wife with him. Chris and Heather have been married for eleven years. She despises attending any work events so he’s worried she won’t agree to go to dinner. After the work call with Oscar and Russell, Chris goes back to his office and there are multiple missed calls and texts. Heather didn’t show up at the school to pick up their children. Ruby is 10 and Hunter is 5. Luckily, Chris’s mom Penelope was available.
Heather is depressed. She wants to be the center of Chris’s attention but ever since they had kids, she can’t do whatever she wants. She agrees to go to the client dinner but mysteriously she and the kids are sick on Friday. Chris goes to meet Russell and his family for dinner and Russell agrees to be Chris’s client. Chris comes home and all the lights are off. He checks on Hunter and finds him sweating and running a high fever. When he checks on Ruby, she is also really sick. He searches for Heather so they can take the kids to the hospital but she is gone.
What happens to James while he is taking his five mile run? Are Chris’s children going to be okay? Where is Heather?
Once again, Victoria Michaels captures my attention right away. I can’t wait to find out what happens with these two families.
That was a lot packed into such a small read. The foreshadowing kept me going. The pace was fast, the lure was steep, and just as you're settling in, tragedy strikes. Initially grateful for Chris and his actions with Heather, I'm heartbroken for Kim and what she and her kids will endure in their future.
