The brand-new novel from the Sunday Times bestseller
From the moment Lily Harper arrives at a remote retreat on the breath-taking Scilly Isles, she is itching to get back to civilisation - and her thriving business. Slowing down simply isn't in her vocabulary, and so she quickly clashes with the gorgeous but dour Sam who runs the retreat. Just as Lily is about to give up and leave, disaster strikes, and she is involved in an incident that changes her perspective on everything. Lily is no longer sure she wants to return to the life she thought she loved. But will she have the courage to give the retreat, and Sam, a second chance?

This book was everything I needed. My friends will know I'm desperate to get away for a holiday, and this book helped me to do this vicariously! I loved the humour throughout, I laughed out loud within the first few chapters, and it continued for the entirety of the book. Such an easy read, and full of fun, drama and romance. My first read from Phillipa Ashley and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I'm off to check out her other books!
I received a free copy of, Second Chance Summer, by Phillipa Ashley, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Lily Harper needs a break, so she goes to a remote island, to regroup. Sam works at the island retreat Lily is staying at. What a great beach read, I really enjoyed this book. The location, the characters, so great.
I so enjoyed this book. The descriptions of the islands are outstanding, and will make you want to take a trip immediately. The characters are very real and very believable, and the storyline is great if a little predictable. The main character, Lily, is a strong independent woman, with her own thriving business. What’s not to like?
Lily isn’t as much driven, as completely immersed in work. Since her sister died, she felt the need to be successful – and she is very successful - almost to the exclusion of everything else. When she collapses on the floor in the office her PA is insistent that she needs a break, and arranges for her to have a break on one of the Scilly Islands in a very new resort which is in the process of being set up by the owner. When Lily arrives after a horrendous journey in the most awful weather, she just wants to turn around and go back to ‘civilisation’ – especially when she realises that the wifi and all communication is practically non-existent on the Island where she is staying. Slowly, with the improvement in the weather, and the handsome owner of the Island, Lily starts to fall in love with the Islands and the resort. It makes her re-evaluate her priorities and realise what is important.
A very well written book, which would make an excellent summer read, and leave you on a high.
Reminded me of Jenny Colgan books, lighthearted and easily readable. Set on the Scilly Isles with wonderful descriptions so have to go back there now asap.
I hate to review books without finishing it but I just couldn’t finish it. I was bored to death and had so many problems I felt myself cringing every 10 pages. I couldn’t continue any longer I AM SORRY!
Minor spoilers ahead
Firstly things I liked: - the premise of the story: an overworked CEO seeking respite in a quiet part of the UK and biting off more than she could chew
Things I did not like: - the execution of said story
To start, the dialogue in this is so stilted it takes you out of the flow. I get that this is fiction but there’s so little charisma and finesse in the dialogue it makes it feel robotic and too polished. Like nobody would ever talk how they do in this book. My biggest grievance was Morven - the “love” (we will get to that) interest’s niece. She is so surface level angsty teen it becomes exhausting to read anything that involves her. She is given this sad backstory about abandonment and how that must be affecting her…but she’s just horrid and nasty. Like she’s not expanded upon in ANY way - and when she is she’s just happy and normal???? WHAT??? Additionally, lily (main character) says how sorry she is for Morven and then is horrid to her anyways even though she’s in her mid 30s - why are you beefing with a teenager - didn’t you just say you’re sorry for her. Lily is just so bland and unlikeable. She just assumes everyone knows her and is so obsessed with her life which is just bonkers. More minor points about the dialogue that I am too tired to expand upon: - saying something has gone viral when it’s an obituary (what??? Also earlier in the book lily is called a z-list celebrity so who would care anyways) - saying that a group of lads have lots of banter when none is displayed (banter is at least mentioned 5 times with 0 actual banter displayed out) - characters saying everything too on the nose and having no outward imperfections in their speech
Furthermore, another big issue is the plot itself. It felt boring even though so much was happening. Like it’s just happened and I was not engaged. Oh they almost died? Okay I guess? Oh Morven isn’t anywhere to be found? Oh they found her sick. Nothing pays off ever (I know I didn’t read until the end but shush). Also the romance. Oh my god the romance is non existent. The word love is on the blurb. I was expecting some romance story. This is a story that itself doesn’t know what it’s trying to say. The 2 MCs I don’t even think are even into each other because my god they make it difficult to even like each other but apparently they do! I just think if you’re gonna write a romance, fine, but actually include the bits where it draws them closer together cause they felt 8 feet apart at all times apart from when they kissed it was just odd.
Overall thoughts are, everyone else has seemed to enjoy this book, but I could not I’m sorry.
This is the perfect holiday read! We head to the Scilly Isles with Lily Harper who has begrudgingly agreed to go on a retreat after being told to have a break from her own business before she burns herself out. She isn't keen to go and can't wait to get back to work, especially when she meets the owner of the retreat, Sam and they both get off on the wrong foot. The retreat on the Isle of Stark isn't quite finished, but the location certainly makes up for all her doubts about taking time off.
I loved this book, it has everything you need for a light-hearted, heart-warming romantic read! Lily initially isn't a very likeable character. She's very head-strong and has a bit of a reputation for speaking her mind. However as the story moves on, I began to like her more and more. Sam is a different story!! He's a little grumpy but oh so gorgeous with it!! They both have their issues though, and whilst they don't necessarily see eye to eye to begin with, I love how their friendship blossoms!
The storyline is lovely and moves along at a lovely pace. The location certainly adds that bit of extra sparkle to it and as I read I could imagine the different islands in the area in my view whilst I sat eating and drinking the local produce (it will make you hungry!). There are a couple of little mini storylines for some of the other characters and they fitted in so well with the main theme.
This was such a wonderful, easy to read book and perfect for these summer months! I loved the location, the characters and even the added extra of a craft fair!! What isn't there to like out of all that?! This was the perfect piece of escapism and I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. Fabulous!! Now, where can I book the helicopter!!
Lily Harper is a bit of a workaholic. She's built up her business to a successful level and acquired a rather formidable reputation, thanks to some past unsavoury editing from the media. But she has her reasons. Then, one day, it all comes to a head, and she finds herself railroaded into taking a much-needed, relaxing break for her physical as well as mental health. Where she ends up is a bit more rustic than relaxing, shall we say. Clashes with the weather, the locals, and her 'host', Sam, create a rocky start to the holiday, and then a near catastrophic incident leaves her questioning many decisions in her life. Lily feels like a female Alan Sugar: no qualifications, but she's built a business with sheer grit and determination, just not to the multi-millionaire of the aforementioned Sugar! She has succumbed to loss and hurt but has hidden it as she strives to prove herself to all those who weren't sure she would make it. Sam has also experienced his own form of loss. And this retreat he's built is meant to channel his attention into something else. It's just that he didn't expect to find himself falling for the first guest. I've never considered visiting the Scilly Isles, but the breathtaking landscapes described made me put it on my list. Though the situation may be a bit far-fetched, why not indulge in a second chance romance, where rugged is not just the romantic interest but the landscape, too? I enjoyed this story. Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone, for an ARC.
Following the tragic death of her sister and a bad brush with the press, Lily Harper has worked herself to the point of exhaustion, literally. She arrives in the Scilly Isles believing she is booked in to a luxury spa resort and is horrified to discover that in fact she is staying on a remote island with no WiFi or phone signal. Rugged resort owner Sam Teague finds his first visitor to be very challenging and not at all impressed with his wellness retreat. A very close call in the choppy waters surrounding the island has Lily questioning her life and her priorities and vowing to make changes - but can she do it? Second Chance Summer is a very enjoyable read with an entertaining supporting cast of characters and a few twists along the way. The Scilly Isles sound amazing and are at the very heart of the story. Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Cornerstone UK , Penguin Books for the review copy. #SecondChanceSummer #NetGalley
Second chance summer - 4.5 🌟 A slow burn romance read with good character development, predictable but heartfelt plot. Makes you realise how important it is to take out time in life for the people and things that matter. The description of the islands of scilly is gorgeously done, wanna go and visit bryher soon. I wonder how this book is so underhyped?
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Random Things Tours and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Opinion
Phillipa Ashley is a must read author for me - in fact I have just added all of the audiobooks my library have available to my reading list.
There are some fantastic descriptions of the Scilly Isles making it feel like you have joined Lily on her retreat. I read this book in one sitting as it was just so easy to get lost in. Overall I thought that Second Chance Summer was well-written and I can see it being a great holiday read for the summer.
I was drawn in by the cover but stayed for the adventure.
Another easy, fun read by Phillipa Ashley. Interesting characters, even though I feel like we skimmed over the details a bit too much. Could have gone more into depth here. But even so, great summer read once more!
Lovely summer read , good juxtaposition of romance between Lily and Sam with other sub plots , descriptions of the Scilly isle just confirm how much I would like to visit .
A wonderful read. I was totally captivated by the first page. I must admit that I didn’t know that Scilly was in the UK so that was an amazing find and I loved learning about the islands and their history and it’s now firmly on my list of places to visit.
Lily and Sam are a great couple of characters. Both with a haunted past relationship and baggage they think is going to bring them down. However together they feel lighter and open up to each other without realising it. They support and champion each other. Sam helped Lily see what was important to her and reminded her about why she started her craft business and Lily helps Sam see that one man can not be an island and help doesn’t make you weak.
Reading about their adventures and mishaps was really riveting and I couldn’t turn the page quick enough, the descriptions and details made me feel like I was actually there. Superb from start to finish.
I have never visited the Scilly Isles or even thought about them for more than a moment, and now I would love to visit. I’m aware that the terrain would be a challenge for my reduced mobility, but a girl can dream. When we meet Lily, we get a clear insight into her controlling and micromanaging nature. Determined to succeed, she has taken on more and more responsibility within her business, all to the detriment of her personal life. Her work has even caused her to neglect her nieces, whom she adores and are the last connection to her sister, who died tragically. Agreeing to a two-week break in a retreat in the Scilly Isles seems like something she can get on board with until she endures the commute and then the underwhelming hospitality of her host. I think we’ve all met women like Lily, whose focus on success has become all-consuming and impossible to relinquish their hold of. However, Lily doesn’t recognise this flaw in herself and struggles to delegate. Despite her depth of focus, I hoped that she would find her way back to a more balanced life and loosen her grip on her control. Lily’s character was perfectly developed, and with each chapter, I gained a greater understanding of what was driving her forward. A special mention has to be made to her loyal assistant, who listeners to Radio2 may find familiar. Sam, on the other hand, is an open book. After stepping in when his brother moved to America, he's been left raising a moody teen. He’s also nursing a broken heart since his girlfriend emigrated to Australia without an invite for him to follow. He certainly deserves better than to deal with Lily’s sharp tongue and spoiled behaviour. I was immediately drawn to him, and he was everything that I would hope for in a romantic lead. As well as her excellent storytelling and character development, what Phillipa Ashley really excels at is her ability to paint a landscape with her words. I could absolutely imagine the setting and practically feel the wind against my skin whilst tasting the salt in the air. The descriptions of the disaster mentioned in the synopsis had my pulse racing, and I was almost gasping for breath. An absolutely wonderful book that I can recommend wholly.
Since Lily’s sister died two years ago she’s buried herself in her work as owner of a website which sells hand made crafts: until the day she collapses with exhaustion. At the urging of her family, she allows her PA to book her a holiday in the Scilly Isles at a luxury retreat. However, when she arrives after a long journey to find the weather foggy and the resort half built, she resolves to go straight home again. However, while waiting to return, she finds her death has been erroneously reported in the press after a near miss in the sea, and so decides to stay until the interest dies down. Over the next month she falls in love, not only with her stunning surroundings, but the delectable Sam who owns the retreat. This is another hit from Phillipa Ashley! I hope the Scilly Isles tourist board are paying her commission, because her beautiful and compelling descriptions of the landscape made me want to book a trip there immediately. I warmed to the complex characters of Lily and Sam and enjoyed waiting for their stories to unfold. Even the ‘support cast’ of this book kept me reading; my heart broke for Morven, Sam’s niece, who had been left with her uncle indefinitely while her uncle was in the States. For me this lovely novel has it all, a stunning setting, great characters and a story that drew me in. Definitely recommended.
I enjoyed this book I liked the storyline and the characters background but I just didn’t feel the connection between them I feel like the romance was very rushed and not enough for me to think they changed there lives for each other I just didn’t feel as invested as I know I can be But still nice for a pallet cleanse and to get in a summer mood with your reading
Lily’s on-line business has been tremendously successful – she’s become a bit of a celebrity in a number of ways (one, involving a reality show, particularly unfortunate), and the interest of a supermarket chain might just move things into a different league. But how about her personal life? That’s something she’s rather neglected – especially her relationship with her young nieces, so important to her after the tragic loss of her sister. And when everything starts to catch up with her and she collapses at her desk, her PA convinces her that she really needs to take a break. And that’s how – after a difficult journey, and not experiencing the warmest welcome – she finds herself on the Isles of Scilly, the first and only guest at a new retreat on one of the smaller islands.
Her host is Sam – a man not without his own challenges, including caring for the difficult teen abandoned by his brother when he left for a new life in America, all while coping with his own broken heart. But he’s determined to make the retreat a success – just one completed cottage for now, and he could perhaps have hoped for a less difficult and demanding first guest than Lily. At first the sparks fly between them, but that “incident” mentioned in the synopsis (particularly dramatic, and so well written – my heart was in my mouth…) rather changes their relationship – and the media interest that follows becomes distinctly uncomfortable, but gives Lily the opportunity to see herself as others see her and re-evaluate what’s important to her.
The characters and their development are really excellent. Lily, hard-edged and driven at the start, softens at the edges and becomes nicely drawn in by the community who enjoy having a celebrity in their midst – and I’d never have expected to find her sharing the cooking and with a paintbrush in her hand, helping Sam complete the renovations. And as for Sam, he’s just gorgeous – not at all the grumpy individual he first appears to be, just keen to get things right and get through his difficult situation. The developing relationship between them was all I wanted it to be – very real, and with the most perfect of emotional touches.
The supporting characters are perfectly drawn too – the teenage niece whose bad behaviour had the most valid of reasons (and so well handled), Sam’s aunt with her warmth and caring, and I had a particularly soft spot for for Lily’s distinctly familiar and recognisable PA who certainly stepped up to the plate when it was most needed. And then there’s the setting, almost another character in the story – quite perfectly drawn, its beauty and remoteness wonderfully captured, somewhere I’ve never been but now firmly on my “must visit” list.
This really was the most perfect summer read – a romance I really enjoyed, the perfect setting, individuals who really won my heart, and a story that both engaged me throughout and warmed my heart. I loved it – you really must add it to your summer reading list.
Lily's craft business, Lily Loves, is thriving, but with success has come its share of anxiety inducing bad press that she is finding it hard to deal with. Since the death of her sister, Lily has thrown herself into her work at the expense of every other aspect of her life. She simply does not know how to stop, but the time has come for her to take a break before she falls apart. Her faithful PA Richie arranges for her to take a couple of well-deserved weeks off at a brand new retreat in the Isles of Scilly, but when she gets there the 'exclusive' resort she was expecting actually turns out to be a tiny, unfinished complex on the remote island of Stark.
Miserable and struggling with being away from her business, Lily gets off on the wrong foot with the handsome, but distant, Sam who runs the retreat. She is determined to leave as soon as she can, but her departure is delayed by an accident that unexpectedly brings her closer to Sam, and gives her a glimpse of the man that lies beneath the dour exterior. With new perspective on her life and surroundings, Lily begins to wonder if she really wants to return to the high pressure life she thought she loved. Can Sam, and Stark, bring the opportunity for a second chance?
Phillipa Ashley once more hits her stride in a lovely escapist adventure to the beautiful Isles of Scilly, which is all about love, loss, and second chances. Overworked, and emotionally unavailable Lily has not actually 'lived' her life for years, but when she is forced against her will to spend time away from her high pressure existence, the possibility of a different kind of future presents itself. Rescued from a sticky situation by the heroic actions of strong, silent Sam, Lily sees that he is actually a man with hidden depths, and the spark of romance begins to burn.
Of course things are never that simple... both Lily and Sam have a lot of preoccupying issues to work through on the way to the happy ending you are hoping for. Ashley does a wonderful job of racking up beautifully contrived romantic suspense, weaving the threads of several storylines around the couple about family, friendship, and running a business that have real heart and soul - and show the picturesque delights, history and tight knit communities of the Scilly Isles off to perfection. There are some enchanting characters to cherish, who evoke laughter and tears before the gorgeous ending rolls around, and I really enjoyed how the theme of art and handmade crafts runs through the whole story.
This book hits the sun, secrets, scenery, and sentimental spot I yearn for in a summer read - and it will have you longing to discover the delights of the Scilly Isles too.
Second Chance Summer is the delightful new novel from Phillipa Ashley. Most of the books I’ve read by this author have been set in Cornwall but here we are transported to the beautiful Isles of Scilly, an island group off the south west tip of Cornwall. Phillipa Ashley’s descriptions of the islands made them sound so stunning and having looked them up, I can see they really are. I’d really like to visit so the author is doing a good job for the Tourist Board!
It wasn’t a beautiful evening when workaholic Lily arrived on the islands though, on a very wet and windy night. She was reluctantly taking a break from her beloved business having been convinced by her assistant that she really needed to take time out or she might burn out. Stark wasn’t quite the luxury island retreat she had imagined. She was the only guest, it wasn’t quite finished and the owner Sam, might have been gorgeous but he was also rather grumpy! As they got to know each other, the attraction between them was undeniable but it was intriguing to pick up hints that there was a lot they weren’t telling each other about their pasts.
One aspect of this story I found particularly interesting was that Sam was helping care for his teenaged niece. I have a friend in almost exactly that situation and I feel that the author wrote about this very insightfully. I thought it was particularly true to life both with the way the niece was feeling and the adjustments that had to be made in Sam’s life. My heart went out to them both.
Another really interesting part of the story involved a misunderstanding which led to Lily’s obituary being printed in the media. As well as having a successful business, she was well known thanks to a reality tv show she had helped judge so there was strong media interest in her so-called demise. When Lily saw what was written about her, she didn’t like what she read. She had a chance to see herself through others eyes and it really made her take stock of her life and what was important to her.
There are many characters who get a second chance in this book and I enjoyed reading about them all. With its gorgeous setting and will-they-won’t-they romance, Second Chance Summer is perfect escapist reading for your summer reading list.
A sun-soaked contemporary romance that will whisk you away, Second Chance Summer is the superb new novel by Phillipa Ashley.
Lily Harper has come to a retreat to the Scilly Isles – and she is counting down the seconds until she can get back to civilization. With a thriving business to run, Lily cannot afford to spend more time at this retreat and her go-getting attitude is at odds with laidback owner Sam who keeps encouraging her to slow down and take some time to rest, regroup and recharge. Sparks quickly begin to fly between the two of them, but little do they realise that their combustible chemistry is about to lead to an attraction neither one of them can deny…
When Lily is about to pack her bags and leave the retreat for good, disaster strikes and she finds herself involved in an incident that soon has her rethinking her priorities and her next steps. As she begins to see the merits of the retreat and starts to fall head over heels in love, Lily wonders whether the Scilly Isles is where she belongs. Can she build a future for herself and Sam in this gorgeous part of the world? Has she found somewhere she can call home? Or will the call of her old life ultimately prove too hard to resist?
Phillipa Ashley’s Second Chance Summer is a gorgeous romantic escape brimming with warmth, charm, humour and heart I adored. With characters who jump off the pages, a beautifully rendered setting that will make you feel as if you are part of the story and a love story that beguiles and delight, Phillipa Ashley’s Second Chance Summer makes for perfect holiday reading – whatever the weather!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoy this book, right from the very first page. Lily Harper runs her own business - Lily Loves. We first meet Lily when she passes out in her office, suffering from burnout. She is still trying to get over the tragic death of her sister two years previously. So work was her escape from having to deal with her grief. Until she collapses. Her extremely capable PA books her a holiday get away to a new retreat in the Scilly Isles. There is just one problem. The resort is nowhere near finished. The resort is in the process of being renovated. The owner Sam is nursing his own heartbreak and uses the work is his refuge. Following an eventful journey, their meeting is any but cordial. Sam's niece is aware of Lily's internet notoriety following a stint as a judge on a crafting tv competition. Curtesy of.an unguarded comment when she failed to realise her mike was still live and some sneaky editing, Lily is branded a heartless bitch. Nothing could be further from the truth, but the internet trolls don't care. The story follows the time that Lily spends in the Scilly Isles. Can she win over the locals, can she finally unwind and start to relax? Can Sam overcome his sorrows. He is juggling the demands of building the retreat and caring for his niece as his brother has gone of to America and left her behind.
This story has a lovely cast of characters and a charming story line. I was sorry when the story came to an end. I would say that this is a great holiday read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
Lily is on burn out, she needs a break from over working herself too hard and trying to decide on a merger with a supermarket for her hand made craft items. So her assistant books a retreat weekend away on an island called Stark. When she gets there she is horrified to find it completely unfinished, her host is the handsome yet cool and aloof Sam who tries hard to make her welcome but is struggling to give good service on a soft opening as he works on his holiday cottages. Finding it hard to unwind at first and desperately wanting to high tail it back to London and work she slowly comes around and sees the natural beauty and charm of the island. She even finds herself fitting in there and actually helping out a little with the cottages and advice on holiday letting and soft furnishings. All the time slowly growing to appreciate and admire Sam who is struggling to make ends meet and also look after his niece the same time. Appreciation slowly turns to deeper feelings for both of them. But as they each have their own lives and jobs elsewhere could they even think about making their slowly burgeoning holiday romance into something even more meaningful? I absolutely adored this, such a lovely story, the characters were great, u liked them all and empathised and cared about them and you just get swept up in the drama and the beautiful locations. One of my favourite reads this year so far and perfect for a bit of summer escapism. Absolutely charming.
Lily Harper is a workaholic and high-achiever with her own company, that promotes hand-made products, and little time for herself and for her family. After passing out in her own office and urged by her personal assistant and her brother-in-law, Lily decides that maybe it’s time to take a break so she books a two-week stay in a resort on the Scilly Islands. Except, where she expected luxury, massages, and time to make the occasional phone and video call for work, she finds a work in progress. The cottage where she will be staying is the only one finished and the only person working at the resort is the grumpy yet handsome owner, Sam Teague. With no phone signal or internet on the island there is no way she is going to survive, yet alone relax, for two weeks. Except, as she spends time drawing the beautiful Cornish landscape and helping Sam decorate the cottages, she finds herself finally relaxing, and Sam may not be as grumpy and unapproachable as she initially thought.
Second Chance Summer is my first Phillipa Ashley novel and what initially attracted me to it is the setting. Cornwall is at the top of my bucket list of places to visit and I love reading about it in novels and the author’s beautiful and detailed descriptions only increased my desire to visit it (and probably stay there forever!). While the setting was my favourite part of the novel, I also really enjoyed the story and the characters. There is romance, of course, but also friendship, family, self-discovery and new beginnings, with also a touch of intrigue thanks to ghost legends and threatening messages. Lily and Sam are two wonderful and well-developed characters, both with past experiences that still torment them. The two weeks they spend together forces not only to face their problems, but also the attraction they feel for each other.
Second Chance Summer is a well-written, heart-warming, and entertaining novel and it introduces me to an author whose past (and future) books I am already planning to read!
A huge thank you to Penguin Books and NetGalley for providing me with a proof of this novel.
This is an ideal summer time read, full of the sea, sand and shimmer of the beautiful Scilly Isles. You absolutely would love to wake up and find yourself on Stark Island, looking out onto that beautiful scenery. Lily arrives there, overworked, stressed out and exhausted but unable to countenance turning off the work button. Driven to create her online craft business, she has felt that she has to keep going to prove to everyone that she can. A tragedy in her family has left her feeling she has to make the most of her time. She also has to cope with people's wrong assumptions about her personality.
Sam seems to be Lily's opposite at first sight. Settled on the remote Scilly Islands, he cannot imagine living anywhere else. You realise however, that he too feels driven to succeed and create the retreat he envisages. You also realise that Sam is putting up barriers and shutting new friendships down. At times, he feels out of his depth in his role as unofficial guardian to his niece but you see his loyalty and kindness.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and finding out more about all the characters. The story has warm moments between friends and family but also times when a lack of communication gets in the way. It is one of those books that you struggle to put down when you have started it, so be warned!
In short: gorgeous summer reading Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book
This is a lovely feel good book which I am sure will be a big hit, particularly with summer holiday season around the corner.
The main character is Lily who runs her own business. She’s over worked herself to make it a success but also to escape the grief of losing her elder and much beloved sister. Her PA and her brother in law insist she take a break and she ends up on a retreat in the Scilly Isles. It’s run by the gruff Sam, it’s in the middle of nowhere, the retreat isn’t even finished, and there’s no wifi or phone signal. Lily immediately wants to head back home to London. But an incident shortly after she arrives makes her reassess her life and whether she has her priorities all wrong. And can the gruff Sam (who is suffering his own grief), his family and the community on the islands help Lily to find herself again.
The story is as predictable as you might expect and it moves along incredibly quickly, particularly at the beginning - the characters change much more in two days than would happen in normal life. But normal life isn’t what most readers would want from this type of book. It is escapist and the images Philippa Ashley conjures of that part of the world make me want to travel there immediately!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
It's been literally years since I read a book by this author and quite honestly, I'm ashamed! I was really drawn to this book, feeling like I'm needing to slow down in life and get into my summer feel-good era!
This was the perfect start to my summer reading and the perfect pick for my frame of mind!
We meet Lily - self-confessed workaholic. Not that I work, but Lily is so, so relatable, especially to lots of us in this day and age. The need to be always on the go, always busy and never to sit back and let ourselves rest!
After a collapse from exhaustion, Lily heads off to a retreat on the Isles of Scilly - and her journey begins.
This was such a lovely escape from real life. The descriptive writing swiftly whisks us away and transports us to this beautiful landscape and I was completely immersed from the start.
Lily's story was believable and one that many should relate to ....and hopefully they can emulate at least for some part of life - to truly slow down and take stock of what's important in life.
I loved the way that Lily and Sam's relationship developed over time and the way their combination worked so well to help the other. Such a heartwarming read.
I loved this and didn't want it to end! I'm definitely feeling the summer vibes now and am excited to add to my reads by this author.
