Postcards from Elsewhere

Rate this book
As a travel writer, Rachel has visited and lived in many different cities. For her, the real allure of travel is becoming a chameleon: gain new identities, assimilate in new environments, meet new people, learn new things, and then write about them—before she packs up and moves on to another city and to the next chapter of her life.

Postcards from Elsewhere is a travel anthology of a travel writer who has essentially become a story cartographer—mapping her world not with landmarks and places but with the cast of colorful characters, and life lessons, she encountered during her many travels around Asia, Europe, and the United States.

A delightful read. More than the places we visit, the curiosities we satisfy, and the knowledge we acquire, it's really the people we encounter, the stories they inspire, and the lessons we gain that make traveling worthwhile.

This would have been a quicker read if not for life calling out to me every single time I pick this book up to read. Tonight, I finally had the chance to flip the last page - that is after carring my little son who begged for me to dance him to sleep.

I enjoyed how upfront and candid this was but that when you read closer (especially if you're old like me), you'll realize that there was a little bit more to the stories than their face value. I loved the things that the author realized towards the end, I guess because I share the same thoughts too especially about being in a constant state of conflict to create something beautiful - this was a topic I had talked to someone about just recently.

I don't know if a grown up like me should read something like this, but I don't actually care and I had fun going through this.

This is my first Philipino author book.
I really enjoy reading it because it’s pretty relatetable with some of her thoughts and experience (I am Indonesian).
This book give me some insights about Philipino culture and history in a light way.
