About the author

Karen McCombie is a bestselling author of children's and young adult novels, and has had more than 90 books published. She is the author of the much-loved series 'Ally's World' (early 2000s) and her most recent books include the Carnegie-nominated historical adventure 'Little Bird Flies' (2019) and it's newly published partner novel 'Little Bird Lands' (2020, Nosy Crow Books), plus the 'St Grizzle's School' series for younger readers (Stripes). She has several books publishing in 2021.
Originally from Scotland, Karen lives in London with her husband, her teenage daughter and beautiful but bitey cat Dizzy.

This was my favorite book, when I was 10-12 years old!
It's a mixture of a girl's fantasy and reality. It has a common topic: A girl has been bullied very critically for a couple of years and no one believes her. Finally she moves to a new school, where she gets a lot of new friends. One day her old bully moves to her school. Will the bullying happen all over again?
This girl, Lemmie, has a lot of rituals every day, that almost control her life.
The book is written in a very weird and funny way.

It was the first book I brought by my own and with my own money, when I was around 10 years old. By that time my dad was with cancer, and this book made my totally hopeful and made me even more faithful (on my own way), that my dad would go through all of it all fine, and by the same time I was being bullying in school. Follow all the magical steps that I remember 'til today, still make me laugh and forget a little bit of the awkwardness that we find sometimes wherever we live or work. Today dad is fine, school is done, and Karen made me dream in become a writer, and that's what I'm turning to. I don't know if she will ever know about the impact her book have to me, but I hope this book be able to be just as impactful in others people's lives, who needs it. I just and simply love it! And still love it!!

my favorite part was when Lemmie eventually admitted that Rose Rouge wasn't actually real. My least favorite part was when Lemmie was getting bullied

Jediná knížka od McCombie, která nemá pokračování. A jako jedna z mých oblíbených autorek jsem si chtěla přečíst i samostatnou knihu. Knížka sice nebyla tak úžasná jako Alice nebo Stella. Ale byla jen trošičku slabší. Laurel mi byla sympatická, měla svou hlavu a byla snílek. Nakonec mě i překvapila její ''sestra'' Růža, o které jsem si myslela SPOILER, že je skutečná. Zřejmě nás napálila všechny. Ale ano knížka se mi líbila.

I tried to read this book when I first got it a few years ago but stopped for no real reason. I really wish I'd kept reading as this seems the sort of story I needed at the time. That being said I still enjoyed reading it today.

This was pretty good, I guess. Honestly, I just read it because we had to read something in class and this was the only book that looked even remotely interesting that was in our classroom's book selection. It was a bit too simple for me, and I found the storyline kept jumping around and I got really confused. I think the main character is a little bit insane, and obnoxious and annoying, so the characters definitely need work. the text was very simple, choppy (in my opinion). I never did finish the whole thing because I got confused and bored. I recommend this to younger children (like 8 or 9 ) because I was 11 when I read this, and it was too childish for my liking. My friends did seem to like it (the ones that read it anyway) and the book was recommended to me by my friend Sandra, who absolutely loved it. It was okay, nothing special, I give 2.8 stars out of 5.

Ah, I adore this book. It was one of my first YA novels, and I was blown away during the course of the story, particularly in the ending. It was fantastic. McCombie weaves the readers through the lonely, solitary grove of the youthful female soul with a big faith and even bigger dreams. This book was so beautiful...not only does it link me with my old middle school bestie, who gave it to me first, but it brought about a shimmer of imagination and hope as a I empathized and fell into the flow of the characters. After this novel, I dubbed McCombie as my favorite writer, and I had only read two more books of hers later on. Still, she remains, for me, at the top. ^_^

A book that touched me mostly because I could relate very well to the main character and her problems with bullying, but not one of my all time favourites.
