Sequel to Bulletproof

Jory Harcourt is finally living the dream. Being married to US Marshal Sam Kage has changed him—it’s settled the tumult of their past and changed Jory from a guy who bails at the first sign of trouble to a man who stays and weathers the storm. He and Sam have two kids, a house in the burbs, and a badass minivan. Jory’s days of being an epicenter for disaster are over. Domestic life is good.

Which means it's exactly the right time for a shakeup on the home front. Sam’s ex turns up in an unexpected place. A hit man climbs up their balcony at a family reunion. And maybe both of those things have something to do with a witness who disappeared a year ago. Marital bliss just got a kick in the pants, but Jory won’t let anyone take his family away from him. Before he knew what it felt like to have a home, he would have run. Not anymore. He knows he and Sam need to handle things together, because that’s the only way they’re going to make it.

If this wasn't a buddy read with Ery and Eve I would have given this one star. Buddy experience = 5/5. Book = 1/5.

Yes, for me it was that disappointing, and I don't understand what the rest of you 5-star raters were reading; it couldn't have been the same book I bought.

The reasons for my disappointment:

#1 Jory and Sam have little page time together. Example: one main plot point is a family reunion. At this reunion children and their caregivers have one set of activities, and unencumbered adults have a second set. Jory and the kids are in group 1. Sam is in group 2, and also working a case. Actually Sam is working a case through most of the story. He keeps arriving on the page to scowl at Jory, then leaving again. When they're together they're pretty much having sex. It's good sex, but it's a strange dynamic.

#2 I had an overwhelming sense that Jory was "the little woman" who should stay tucked up safe at home while the plot unfolded elsewhere. Whereas in previous books Jory's actions drove, or at least influenced, the story (discovering the identity of Jory and Aja's kidnappers, who in Dane's family is bat-shit cray cray, etc) here Jory's actions have no effect. Actually Jory is barely allowed any actions that don't involve caring for children. Aaron chooses him a new car. Dane and Sam decide where they will live. Jory even states that he follows all Regina's suggestions with his home and child raising. I always liked that Jory was independent and was prepared to walk away from anyone who treated him as if he wasn't.

#3 An OFF-PAGE main plot!!!! Sam keeps arriving for 10 minutes and delivering exposition explaining what is happening with the central storyline, then leaving again.

#4 The tragically under-utilized Dr Dwyer. Much of this was because of the off-page plot, but how marvellous this book could have been if

#5 Too much kid time. Yes, the kids are cute, but god in heaven I was so over them.

Throughout the whole book I had the feeling that it was all scene-setting, and that the actual plot was just about to start. And then it was over.

I didn't want Jory to finish this way.

Ode to J...

There once was a man named Jory,
He made me obsess on this story.
He was very beautiful and so very kind,
And always in trouble with his distracted mind.

His skin was so golden and his eyes were so brown,
There was no one who could resist him in the whole windy town.
He had a big knack for trouble and an eye for things pretty,
He loved jazz clubs and good scotch and was always quite witty.

Then he met Sam - a big handsome guy,
The cop who started off straight - but then maybe was bi?
A detective with clout that was Sam Kage,
His lust over Jory was clouded in rage.

Sam was appealing - he looked like a god,
No one could resist him or his sexy bod.
Jory's friends tried to warn him but it was too late,
Don't give your heart away to a man who is straight!!

Their passion was crazy and very intense,
They were perfect together it really made sense.
But Sam couldn't handle the way it was going,
He freaked out on Jory and their love that was growing.

The perils of Jory they just won't slow down,
He’s kidnapped and beaten and thrown all around.
His brushes with death are too many to name,
He lives on the edge - his life is never quite tame.

He meets pimps and drug-dealers and all sorts of foes,
He is drunk and abandoned and left to his woes.
He solves crimes and meets women who love him a lot,
Too bad he is gay 'cause he’s so freakin’ hot!

Well, Sam does return to reclaim his man,
Because there's no one but Jory for someone like Sam.
Their adventures continue until death do they part,
Because love wants what it wants and you can't fool the heart

I’m completely hooked on this series to the point where I suspect I’m going to struggle to move on when it’s finally finished.

Sam and Jory are now a family with Kola and Hannah, they love each other just as much as they ever did and despite the fact that he’s still a Trouble Magnet Jory has matured. He’s no longer the crazy guy that goes charging into every situation without much thought.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s hard to pick a favourite but this one is up there. Once I’d recovered from Sam the liar liar pants on fire that is.
I was furious with him, furious because he lied, because he’d left Jory in the hospital after taking a bullet for him and because he’d had that 3 months. As a friend pointed out Jory was no saint at the time, he was working his way steadily through a stream of men. But then he’d risked his life, been deserted and was heartbroken so yes I gave him a pass.

Anyway I digress.
I forgave Sam because Jory did plus it’s hard to stay mad at the guy since he adores his family so much and loves Jory with all his heart.

We still get the crazy but also the sweet, I loved Kola and Hannah and this book was beautiful.

If I’m being honest I was hoping for more Sam and Jory but I understand the next book belongs to Aaron and Duncan. But like I said I’m hooked so bring it on..

Look, I understand people grow up and eventually start a more mature life-style, but does that mean they have to become boring in the process? No, I don’t think so.

Jory honestly wasn’t the same guy I used to know and love anymore: he was extremely subdued and no longer took any form of action. He was completely mellowed out and was suddenly prepared to simply accept everything that came his way. He did not try to do anything dangerous anymore, he always listened to what he was told to do without any questions asked, and his constant curiosity or excitement were entirely gone. He was no longer his unique and spit-fire self; instead, he was just.. normal. And boring.

The plot was also very uneventful and almost everything happened completely off-page. The reason for that was probably because Jory was no longer involved in anything, so since we are reading from his POV, this means we don’t really get to know what is going on either.
Literally the only thing Jory did was be a stay-at-home father and a doting husband to a man who was almost never home. This is not what I envisioned Jory’s life ever being like... He used to be so special; his life was always a whirlwind of activity and interacting with other people. It was odd to watch him be so different now.
And don’t get me wrong, I thought his son and daughter were absolutely adorable, and him and Sam were very loving parents... but my god, it was simply not enough to keep me entertained throughout the whole book. I was bored.

Well, my, my, my...Jory has grown up. He's more mature and he's making grown-up decisions. It's not a secret I love Jory. I've been in love since book one. I love his quirky clueless ways. Yeah, I know...I gush all things Jory all the time but he really is my favorite. I love the addition of the kids, though, I wish we had gotten to see them become a family for the first time instead of retrospect.

Damn Sam! I was getting ready to bring out my knife again. Did you have to lie about Kevin? Really?!? WTF dude? Ugh that part frustrated me. I mean YOU are the one who left Jory so you don't get to do relationships. Just no! But then he says shit like this:
"You’re it, you’re home for me. If it’s not you, it won’t be anybody. I can’t settle, it’s all or nothing.”

And this:
“You,” he said, his mouth hovering above mine, his tongue sliding over my bottom lip, “are fucking mine, and you’re the only person who gets me and lets me be me.”

And of course:
“It’s always been… us”

See my dilemma? I want to hate him. I want to be angry with him but when he says those things I just can't dammit! So even though he pisses me Jory off with his caveman ways and stupid logic, I he can't stay mad at him. Because Jory is it for Sam and there's no doubt. And Sam with his kids?? SWOON So this was the Sam I saw when I first read the Marshals series.

Now the next book is Aaron and Duncan. I wasn't sure I wanted to read it because honestly, until this book I loathed Aaron. But after reading some reviews, and the ending of this book, you just know I'm going to pick it up because I'm officially obsessed with this series and this author.

After spending many years slowly getting to this point, I’m pleased to say that I really enjoyed this sixth story in the often bat-shit crazy lives of Jory and Sam.

I was told by many of my GR buddies (you know who you are) that I’d learn to love these guys and that I’d likely prefer the later books in their series, and boy were they right!

When it comes down to it, I mostly enjoyed this instalment for its domesticity. Jory and Sam are now fathers of two god damn adorable little humans, and I couldn’t have been happier to just read about these guys being husbands and dads to their pair of mini scene-stealers. I was glad to be well and truly done with all the back and forth, together-broken up-together again bullshit of those first few crazy-ass stories, much preferring to read about Jory and Sam happy, in love and thriving as they head into middle age bliss.

There were still some random plot moments, featuring characters and interactions that served no purpose but to drag out the story, but thankfully, unlike the first few books, there was a lot less of the filler stuff here, and, praise Jesus, a noticeable decrease in creepy dudes drooling all over Jory (which used to be roughly one new, inappropriately behaved suitor per chapter). I was certainly not remiss to see that sort of thing gone from the usual Calmes formula, enjoying the story all the more for it.

Six books in and I can honestly say Jory has grown on me. Once a frustratingly flighty, reckless, self-involved trouble-magnet, Jory is now more grounded, proving more thoughtful and less reactionary than he once was. Sure, he’s still a trouble-magnet to the nth degree, but how he responds to said trouble now is in greater leaps and bounds more reasonable and responsible than he ever did in his younger, unfathomably nonsensical years.

Maturity and fatherhood has definitely done Jory and Sam a world of good, as individual people and as romantic partners, and I daresay my complex relationship with this series as a whole was well worth the effort just to follow Jory (and to a lesser degree Sam) on their decades long journey to their HEA.

Oh yes, still so enjoyable.

----------------------------------------------

Jory and Sam have adopted two children and are now living the happy stable life they've always wanted. Well, if Jory doesn't get shot at, chased down, or almost gets killed every other day. But hey, that's normal for Jory, so Sam just has to deal.

This book gave me all the warm fuzzies as only a Mary book can. *happy sigh*

I do want to mention that I’m totally in awe of Mary Calmes and how she can write about the Netherlands and get EVERYTHING wrong. (Mykola, the boy Jory and Sam adopted was supposedly from my country.)

Our last orphanage closed in 1952, so that would be quite the accomplishment that they got Mykola from there. And the name… Mykola is….. so not a Dutch name, not even close.

And in this book Kola called Jory 'Pa', which is indeed a Dutch name you can call your father, but it’s like the equivalent of calling your father ‘old man’ (not the same meaning, but more like used in the same way). You might do that when you’re an adult, but never ever as a small child. Every kid here calls their father Papa or Pap. Of course it's possible little kids call their father that, but it just sounded weird to me.

But why do research when you’re a writer?

Still, its Sam and Jory and I love them.

What can I say. It's Jory and Sam, so I loved it. I did hate Sam a bit because he lied about that stupid Kevin guy. I was also a bit pissed at him for being mad at Jory, when Sam was the one fucking up and not Jory.

Off to the next, and I think final, book.

It is so good to see Jory grown up. He's still manic, gleeful, young-at-heart extrovert with the attention of a sparrow, but having children and a husband has made him into a real live adult, and he throws himself into caring for his family with the same passion he used to throw himself into trouble, but with much better results. The dynamic between Jory and Sam hasn't changed-- Sam is still the ultimate alpha and Jory still has a hummingbird brain that needs to be brought to heel, but Sam has been gentled, and Jory's brain has learned to do the things it has to in order to keep Jory's family safe. I like that Jory stays home and keeps his children safe when Same needs to leave-- it's what any responsible parent would do, because that's part of working as a team. Jory's still functioning ability as a giant electro-trouble-magnet works just fine, but his family sense keeps him from making that worse, and as any adult with little people can tell you, when the little people come first the trouble magnet detritus needs to stay out of the life as much as possible. Jory does just fine, and he will ALWAYS need his Sam.

"And I always knew I was the one for you, always. There was never a doubt in my mind."

"No?"

"No. It was why I couldn't be the guy anyone else needed, because I was already the one that you needed."

Seeing how far Sam and Jory have come was just fantastic! Settled, happy, married with kids....so comfortable in their love for each other.

"You're it, you're home for me. If it's not you, it won't be anybody. I can't settle, it's all or nothing."

"I know."

"I love you so much it hurts."

Jory was still a trouble magnet and some pretty ridiculous scenarios played out here, but even his crazy shenanigans couldn't overshadow the love this family had. Kola, their son and Hannah, their daughter, were the right balance of both their dads.

My heart melted at seeing Sam protect and cherish his family, and as crazy as Jory is...he was born to be the caretaker this group. Was he a little too 1950's housewife? Yes, but it suited his personality perfectly. His upbringing was so messed up, that I like that he's living his dream as an adult.

This was the perfect extended HEA for Sam and Jory. It was an entire book dedicated to their love....their love for their kids, their friends, their family....and most importantly, each other.

"I'm the only man for you"

"You're very conceited."

"I am very loved."

"Yes, you are."

I'm sad this is the last full length book for these two, but I'm sure I'll be revisiting my favorite parts of their tale. And it doesn't hurt that we get glimpses of their life in other books.

When I started this series, I was a little skeptical about what the hub-bub was about this couple. But now, at the end....I get it....I soooo get it.

"Sam."

"Yes?"

"You know how much you love me?"

"Yeah."

"I love you the same."

Jory cracks me up every time. Love when Sam gets all mushy and talks about feelings! Ah, Aaron's book is next! Yay!

**********

Time has passed since last book ended and Jory is finally settled and happy. He is married to the man of his dreams - Sam Kage. He has two adorable children - Kola and Hannah. He has a dream job and loyal friends. Life is perfect. But there are still loose ends to tie, and the past that was dormant till now comes back to bite Sam in the a$$. But Sam and Jory are an unbreakable team, so no matter what there will be no running away. They are like a well-oiled machine. They fight the bad guys with Sam on the front lines and Jory keeping his home safe.

I loved Hannah and Kola. They are so funny, so sweet and have a touch of both Sam and Jory in them. I couldn't help but love them. But the rest of the Jory and Dane's crew have children of their own, and they are all boisterous and loud. I loved all the moments spent with kids. There was so much humor here. Jory as always was the soul of any gathering making jokes, bringing happy tears to eyes and being his adorable self.

This book felt like the end to Sam and Jory's story - both men are happy personally and professionally, they are where they want be which is surrounded by family and friends. I loved that even after 12 years together they took each other's breath away. As they always said: "It's a gift." Everything's worked out for them, and it makes me feel really good. I can't wait to read the next book and see Aaron finally get his happy ever after. I bet it will be a roller coaster! I enjoyed this book very much and I highly recommend it!

Belens Audio Book Review

I think I highlighted/bookmarked more quotes and passages in this book than in all of the others combined. I love Sam and Jory.

What may be considered mild spoilers ahead!

It's five years since Bulletproof and Sam and Jory are settled into married life happily with two children, Kola and Hannah. Normally, I stay away from kids in stories, but the introduction of their kids didn't put me off because Calmes tempers what could be the annoyance of little kid talk with humor in a way that I just flat out enjoyed.
“Pa.”
Hannah was looking up at me like I was the village idiot.
“What?”
“If Kola can’t lick Chilly, you can’t lick Daddy.”
I had a terrible image of giving Sam a blow job just then, and he probably knew it, which was why he grabbed me and covered my mouth with his hand.

But it's not all kids all the time, thankfully. There's more than enough "Sam and Jory" time to not get lost amongst the day-to-day living with kids in suburbia trap. Also, come on, this is Jory - trouble finds him constantly.
My husband, my brother, family, and friends would say that yes, Jory Harcourt is a trouble magnet, but I think it’s more coincidence than anything else when fate decides to screw with me.

here comes trouble

Between an ex of Sam's showing up and bringing with it some questions about Sam's past...
“I’m not sitting in your lap. This is not a tantrum I’m throwing, and you don’t get to treat me like a drama queen or a petulant child. This is you caught in a lie of your own making. Finish the story or I will get out and walk home and you can go back to work and pick me up later when it’s time to go to your mother’s.” His eyes locked on mine. “Your choice.”
“You’re madder than I thought.”
“I’m not mad,” I assured him.
“Hurt, then.”
He wasn’t getting an answer. I just waited.
“Close the door,” he breathed.
Leaning out, I grabbed the handle and pulled it shut before turning back to him.
I was startled by the look on his face. “You don’t get to leave me,” he whispered, and his eyes were cold and dark like water under ice.
The transformation was scary. “Sam?”
His eyes were narrow slits. “I forbid it.”

Then there's the hit man at the family reunion, which keeps Sam away from his family for a few eventful days, Kola getting hurt at school, Jory and the kids witnessing a terrible crime, and Jory almost getting kidnapped (again!)...
“Why do you keep letting me go?”
“Why do you keep going?” I asked back, knowing from the haunted, raw look in his eyes that I was seeing a man absolutely eaten up with guilt and worry and pain. He was sick that he had not been there for me or Kola or Hannah.
“I always think if I want something done right, that I absolutely must do it myself.”

But together Sam and Jory are stronger than anything they come up against.
“I belong to you, Sam Kage,” I cut him off, pulling him down into a kiss. He devoured me, and I whimpered and whined, tightening my legs, wriggling beneath him, burying my hands in his hair.
“You,” he said, his mouth hovering above mine, his tongue sliding over my bottom lip, “are fucking mine, and you’re the only person who gets me and lets me be me.”
“I know that, which is why you should never, ever leave me. Right?”
“Right,” he agreed before he kissed me again.

Because Sam and Jory are the best!! They can weather anything together and always come out stronger on the other side in spite of it all!
“I love you too,” he growled and pounced, and I was in his arms, crushed in the iron embrace, his face pressed to the side of my neck as he shivered hard.
“Not leaving you, never leaving you. We’re good, we’re solid. But for you, where would I be?” He just breathed me in. “I don’t care who you loved or who loved you. I’m not jealous because look where you are. You chose me and our life, and you’re not going anywhere without me or the kids.”
“No,” he promised as he lifted his head and took my face in his hands. I saw it in his eyes, the emotion surging through him, and then he was kissing me violently, completely, missing nothing as he devoured my mouth. “Never—” He kissed harder, deeper, his mouth so hot and wet. “—leaving you, you’re mine, you make it all work.”
I couldn’t think of anything better.

As for the narration: Finn Sterling is wonderful!! Even though this is actually my least favorite Jory voice of all, overall it's hands down my favorite audio narration of the series.

This is an audio I listen to at least monthly. *sighs* I just love these characters.

I'm a bit torn about this. I have to say though that the narrator of this book was my favorite out of all of them and greatly enhanced my enjoyment.

It's been approximately 12 years since Jory and Sam first met and though they've thankfully matured a bit and have become settled, their love has not diminished. This last chapter was definitely more mellow, the hijinks not even close to being crazy. I'm still on the fence whether I missed it or not.

As I've said before, and I'll say it again, I appreciate Mary Calmes giving us a look at these two living their daily lives and this book has it in spades. So if you're ok with plenty of on page kid cuteness and Jory going through the motions of managing the household, then this is for you. There is a minor mystery that involves a case Sam is working on that brings with it a mini relationship crisis. How they discuss and handle it; what's revealed is just probably the best part of this book.

What I like about this series overall is that their passion for each other has never wavered through all the shenanigans they have gone through. So yes, I love growly possessive Sam and the heat level is pretty darn good which gives this extra points. If you've gotten this far on the Jory train I don't think many will be disappointed with the conclusion - because I wasn't. Enjoy!

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might contains spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

We're back with the couple Jory Harcourt (35) and Samuel “Sam” Thomas Kage's (46) their journey that keeps going. Why don't they have the same last name, btw? They are married after all. Jory and Sam now have two kids; Mykola “Kola” Thomas Kage (6) and Hannah “B” Regina Kage (4). The book time jump with 5 years, I think, and everyone pretty much has kids. Someone is trying to kill/stop Sam, and using Jory to do that, doesn't bother them... There's also Sam's ex showing up.
“I knew the difference then, I know the difference now. You’re it, you’re home for me. If it’s not you, it won’t be anybody. I can’t settle, it’s all or nothing.”

What I dislike so much about this series is that I feel like we miss the important stuff: the adoption of the kids, the wedding between Jory and Sam, Dane becoming a father, Jory's successful second try of having his own company... We're missing the big changes in their lives that define them and it makes connecting with the characters on a deep, personal level hard. I also wished we could have gotten some POVs from Sam and Dane.
“Thirty-five-year-old men are not cute.”
“You’ll always be the twenty-two-year-old club kid I saw for the first time lying in the street with a beagle on top of him.”

The thing is, throughout the series I have been worried about Jory... we met Jory when he was 23 (?), he's 35 now, problem is; there haven't been any development. He's still the same, only now he has a husband, 2 kids, a brother and more friends. Personality wise, he's still the same; quite immature. But I do have to admit that he is a little bit better in this one. You are now starting to see a change. Which is good and I hope that keeps up.
“My brother, who you just saw… did you see him?”
“He would be hard to miss.”
“Yeah, well, he watches out for me, he’s the scary one, and—”
“Make no mistake, Mr. Harcourt, the scary one in this scenario has always been and I suspect will always be Marshal Kage.”

Sam is being Sam: badass but such a sweetie when it comes to Jory and his kids. I wish we get more of Sam being badass and being all commanding and bossy as a boss. I also want more of a bigger friendship between Sam and Dane. I'm still waiting for Ian and Miro from Marshals series to show up, as that series is the reason I gave this one a shot. Overall, as Jory was better, the book was a tiny bit better. It's not a great series, as much is bugging me when it comes to the stories, but I refuse to give up until I have read them all. I just want the series done. Not all that many left, right?
“And I always knew I was the one for you, always. There was never a doubt in my mind.”
“No?”
“No. It was why I couldn't be the guy anyone else needed, because I was already the one that you needed.”

Beautiful and sweet, that's how I describe this book! After reading the growth of Jory and Sam's love trough this amazing series, I feel very satisfied with this last book of their lives.. the domestic routines, the love and the care for their loved ones were amazing, it was as if I was living with them! I really love this book!

I can read this book as many times as I want, and I will always love this couple!

I wasn't sure that I would like this book because usually when kids come in the picture, the action and romance has to be sacrificed, but that is so not the case here. The author does a great job of including two adorable kids, along with those of close friends and family, yet still have an exciting plot, with action, danger, a bad guy coming after Sam and Jory, and intense romance between Sam and Jory. I just love this couple, though Jory will always be my favorite. Love the secondary characters, especially Dane. Great book and I can't wait to read more.

6/20/2016 serious fan girl so take my word with a grain of salt, but... I still love it. After countless readings, Mary Calmes just does it for me.

GR ate my review so here is a shorter version...

I love, love, love Jory and Sam. If you've made it this far into the series, then I don't have to tell you what happens. Jory is a trouble magnet (and the "Love god"). Speaking of Jory being the love god, I've read and/or listened to this multiple times. HOW IN THE HELL did I miss the introduction of Aaron and Duncan?!?!?!?! I knew from their book that they had been introduced by Jory, but somehow I missed that in every freaking reading of this book. I guess I have selective memory or something. I always remembered the plot and who the bad guys were but never that introduction. I'm very glad I caught it this time.

****narration review****

I won't compare this narrator with Paul Morey. It wouldn't be fair. I will say that though I truly missed Paul Morey, I was satisfied with Finn's narration. By the end of the book, I was enjoying his version of a growlly Sam. Kudos to him for getting that.

Trigger warning - lots of little kids being cute!

Fast forward... Sam and Jory have 2 kids now, Kola 6 and Hannah 4. Of course, they are cute and clever and Jory and Sam are the best parents ever. It's true, they are such terrific parents that they are god parents to about 20 other kids. Sam and Jory seem to be solid as a couple, but oddly enough, they don't seem to spend lots of time together. When the are together, they have awesome sex, which is great. But we never really see them bonding in a non-sexual way. While there was a bit of a plot, the book mostly seemed busy with friends and family and school and other mundane things such as .

Oh Jory, I just love you to death! You and Sam have given me so many wonderful hours of pure reading indulgence and pleasure, and I can't even begin to tell you how much I adore you both. I will truly miss seeing you both in new adventures, but I can take solace in the fact that I can always go back and re-read your earlier stories. As for this latest tale, it was everything I had hoped for and more. Thank you so much.

No real surprises in this one. The everybody loves Jory train continues to roll, only now, his whole family seems to be encompassed in Jory's aura of awesome, because everyone was just as enamored with Sam and their kids. I did wish there was more of the action plot included in the book, and more actual relationship, instead of Jory constantly getting into one mess after another, mixed in with domestic family fun time. It almost felt like this is just the author, not wanting to let this couple go, as I didn't really feel like it added anything to this world.

But for you, where would I be?”

This was perfect. It was all Sam and Jory all the time. It was Jory all grown up and doing adult things. It was Sam and Jory being parents with the coolest short people and the most manic cat who destroys everything. It was bliss. It was romantic. It was over the top per the usual but it was Sam and Jory together more than apart and it was everything.

I don't normally read an author back to back, let alone read one for an entire week but this series, it's the exception. This IS the exception to everything. I was looking for something that would make me fall in love with a book, with the characters and something for my romantic heart to turn to goo over. This was it. I wouldn't have known who Sam Kage was had I not met him in All Kinds of Tied Down - being picked up by Jory and that sweet kiss - and of course, now that I know Sam, I need to go read a few bits of that book with him again.

But anyway. I am in love with all that this series is. It kept me entertained from the first page of book one and smiling through tears on the last page of this, the last in the series. It was simply everything and I am so stupidly in love with this series, with the author, with Sam and Jory and just... Le sigh.

To sum it all up - I'll leave it to Mr. Harcourt and Mr. Kage.

"I always knew I was the one for you, always. There was never a doubt in my mind.”
“No?”
“No. It was why I couldn’t be the guy anyone else needed, because I was already the one that you needed.”
“Sam.”
“Yes?”
“You know how much you love me?”
“Yeah.”
“I love you the same.”
“It’s always been… us.”
“Yes, it has.”

FINALLY...

I find that when reading a series, I can be hyper-critical of each individual book (who? me?) but still love the series as a whole. That's been the case with the Matter of Time series...each book was good, but the big picture is great. Well with "But For You", I feel Mary Calmes finally hits her stride with Sam & Jory.

Or maybe I'm just happy that they're happy. Married, kids, steady jobs, and a lot less drama. You'd think that would make for a boring book, but instead, it equaled BLISS. Yes, she put in the token "Sam's away" bit and the curveball of Dr. Dwyer had me worried (though, how that storyline played out was reaching for too much, in my opinion).

Your readers have simple needs, Ms. Calmes: we just want Sam & Jory. And finally, book 6 gave us just that.

Happy.

"Marital bliss just got a kick in the pants, but Jory won’t let anyone take his family away from him."

If I've waited through 5 freaking books only to have Sam be a cheater I may do something rash.

Audio Re-Read, 2024

Quick note! Another new narrator. I just started and ugh, I just don't know. At least this guy changes his tone and his voice and tries.

**Audio Re-Read**

For as many times as I have read and listened to this series I think it is funny or no, strange that I never seem to write a review.

So, another new narrator for this one. This narrator really made Jory sound different and I don't know if it was a good different.

The reunion was weird, a lot of it was weird.

I hate Kevin Dwyer and honestly, thank God for the beginning of Parting Shot, yes, I already started, because that is where Sam gives his very best explanation for the whole thing. Fucking lies man, no good and they will always come back and bite you!

I feel like Jory was a little off in this one, maybe he is just getting older. I feel like Sam was gone again but when he wasn't, man, he was perfection. He is so settled and in love. I love seeing him like this.

The kids are cool.

I'm probably going knock this down to 4★'s this time.

On to the next one.

One last time with Sam and Jory...

Ok so this is the last book in the series with Sam and Jory as the MCs and we have yet another new narrator. This time it's Finn Sterling and once again the narration was good but the voices just weren't working for me and while I liked the story because I wasn't over the moon with the narrators voices for Sam and Jory things were ok but not awesome.

And again if I have a chance I'll give this one a real review in the near further but really this series has been around for quite a while so I'm not sure that there's much more to say that hasn't already been said, but for now I'm done and on to the next book.

God! These two just get better and better as time goes by
I've enjoyed the ride so much!! I never want this series to end... Now onto Duncan and Aaron

Still missing Paul Morey but this narration is much better than book 5.
I really enjoyed this one so much. I love the fact that the kids play a larger part in the story. They are too cute for words. This narrator is awesome so much better than the last book.
Sam and Jory are just epic and I love the fact that once Sam commits he is ALL in. I love their passion and chemistry.
