LGBT; Contemporary

The only thing extroverted Nate loves more than baseball is his quiet, reserved Casey. The feeling's mutual, thanks--but it isn't all fun and games. A wedding planner, Casey's booked solid during the summer months and thanks to a certain poem about the Mudville Nine, cringes at the thought of ball games. Fair's fair--with seven older sisters who redefined “wedding drama”, Nate freezes at the thought of tying the knot. Casey might wish things were different, but he wouldn't trade Nate, his big heart, or his skills between the sheets for a wedding worthy of a Rockefeller.

After losing a strip poker bet, Casey's promised forfeit is spending a full day at a softball tournament. He's sure there's more going on than a simple sports wager and wonders what Nate's up to, but he's curious enough to jump in and commit. And so, finally, is Nate, who's planning a surprise involving an engagement ring and a proposal from the pitcher's mound.

But things don't go quite according to scheme for the odd couple when Nate takes his lover out to the ball game. And who knows what might happen when Casey's called up to bat?

FUCK YEAH!!! Willa Okati does it again. I want to run around the bases and high five all of my GoodReads M/M romance friends after reading this book. I envy each and every one of you who have not read it yet, for you are in for a divine treat. I'm also going to recommend you do something rather odd. SAVE THIS BOOK FOR A RAINY DAY. A rainy day meaning, when you are all angsted-out, cried-out and wrung-out from too much sorrow in your M/M reads and just need to take a step back and read something to lift your spirits. This book is 100% warm and fuzzy with rainbows and puppies and soft and cuddly kittens, running through fields of fresh cut grass, on your way to eat luscious chocolate cake that melts in your mouth but will never make you fat. MCs Casey and Nate have the type of relationship you wish every person you love, gay or straight, could have, and they will both absolutely delight you.

Highly recommended for all, I can't say it enough. I love, love, love this book. Mighty Casey will be a permanent resident on my iPad, along with Point of No Return, Laurel Heights and Strength of the Pack. Available for a quick read when I need a pick-me-up.

I sincerely hope you love this book as much as I did. In a kinder world, this is how all our GLBT brothers and sisters should be treated by our communities.

Totally predictable but fluffy and sweet.

I usually don't read established couple stories and this book reinforced why. I always just feel "meh" about a relationship if it is already underway when the story starts. However, this was too adorable for me to care that much.

The sports aspect was prominent and served as the backdrop of the story. I don't love sports stories unless it involves a GFY or closeted MC so that aspect of the story was just okay for me.

The sex scenes were decent but improbable (lots of baseball field dugout and public bathroom sex!).

All in all a cutie read for when you have a few hours for some fluff.

Sorry, might be my mood, but somehow this didn't work for me. I couldn't concentrate on the storyline, especially after this crunch stuff, which wasn't funny but eye-roll-worthy for me. I made it up to 22%, perhaps I'll try sometime later, but for now it's enough.

It was an utterly charming read. Despite the numerous sex scenes it was still an highly enjoyable read. And did I mention charming? It was the first word that came to mind after the first chapter. Even though I had to suspended my disbelieve a bit

The majority of the book (except for the epilogue) take placed in a single day. The day where the sporty Nate play softball with his team in a charity event. He did everything he could, including cashing in on the bet, to take his introvert boyfriend, Casey to the ballpark. Casey, who did not care one wit for the sport went along and got the surprise of his life by the end of the day.

I kinda knew how the story was going but it did not take away the pleasure of reading how this couple were totally into each other. It was nice to read about the game, the interlude, the subplot of Kenneth, meeting Mimi.

Highly recommended read for anybody.

PS: The writing here is quite posh, elegant and somewhat high-brow but in a good way. Definitely above average prose and wordings.

This was cute!  Was in the mood for something "romantic and sexy" and this hit the spot perfectly. Thank you, Will Parkinson, for the recommendation.

This was not a complicated story; just something simple and fun and is told all in one day when Casey has to attend Nate's ball tournament because he lost a challenge...did I mention that Casey hates sports?  Especially baseball?

Casey and Nate are already an established couple at the beginning of the book, and while I usually don't like reading stories like that, Casey and Nate were just too cute for me not to love.

There was no angst at all...but lots and lots of sweet (and salty) Caramel Poppernutter Crunch.  Plus a sweet and sweaty (salty) romance too.

There was A LOT of sex!  I admit that much of it was HOT, but it did get a bit over the top with all the near public sex.

The ending was a bit predictable, but ohmyfreakinggod was it adorable!

Totally recommended for when you are in the mood for something "romantic and sexy".

I loved this short little story.
Set mainly during the course of 1 day.
Casey, who hates all things sports is dragged to a softball competition that his boyfriend had organized.
As the day goes on, he gets more involved, becoming team mom and then stepping up to play for his boyfriend's team
Lots of hot outdoor sex and a great cast of secondary characters,.

It was a cute story. I never thought I had a preference but I just realized, the already established couple isn't my favorite. I love the whole getting to know each other process. When they're an established couple I usually feel like I'm missing something...

A very dear friend of mine has raved about the fabulous Willa Okati and how much I need to read their work and that I'm losing out by not doing it. So, when I could, I looked through the available books and settled on 'Mighty Casey'. Why this one? Maybe because I've always loved the poem 'Mudville Nine' or maybe I just always liked the cartoon version of the poem that I used to watch. Who knows why I chose this as my first introduction to this author? The point is that I did. And now I'm kicking myself for having waited so long.

Casey is a wedding planner and madly in love with Nate. Nate is madly in love with Casey and baseball or softball. Casey loathes team sports, but especially the ones involving a ball and a bat. Nate loathes anything to do with weddings. Casey is a quiet, introvert from the Pacific Northwest. Nate is more outgoing, a sports fan, and he's from the Carolinas. Talk about your opposites in some ways. Nate beats Casey at poker and Casey has to pay up. An entire day watching the community softball tournament. Oh, ick. But Nate has more up his sleeve than just making Casey watch the games.

Casey finds a shady spot, which Nate reserved just for him, and holding onto the box of Poppernutter Crunch (Cracker Jacks) that Nate gave him, Casey settles down to watch. Of course, Nate made a new bet with Casey and it involves that particular box, but I'm not spoiling that surprise! Let's just say it was a very well written scene with just the right amount of humor and love.

In a word, 'Mighty Casey' is sweet, gentle, loving, funny, sexy, and a marvelous read. Okay, that was more than one word, but still. There's no angst or drama, just two men who are crazy about each other, a bet, a Saturday watching softball, some sneaking around for a little loving, and a heck of a surprise. They are also two guys who seem to find more places for a little nookie, at a community softball tournament no less, than anyone else I've ever seen. *grins* This is one of my new favorite go-to reads when I just want happy.

I went in with little to no expectations as I have never read a book by Willa Okati. What transpired was a story I wished was longer because not only were the MC's well rounded and interesting, most of the secondary character were also. Casey is a wedding planner who dislike baseball and softball because of the poem Mighty Casey at bat. He is in love with Nate, who absolutely love sports. And Nate with 7 older sisters has a strong dislike of all things wedding related. Losing a bet on strip poker, Casey has to Spend all day at a softball tournament that Nate organized and is playing in. Casey honors his commitment and attend, with the suspicion that there is more going on than just a softball tournament. He is given a box of Poppernutter, a cracker jack like snack, to hold onto, with the proviso that if he enjoys himself at the tournament he has to open the box and eat it.
Nate is giving hints that he is maybe losing his dislike of wedding enough to marry Casey.

Some of the secondary characters who make this book even more memorable and fun are Mimi, a petite, personality packed, softball dynamo with a wicked sense of humor, Kenneth, gay and geeky in a cute way, and Roger, a former semi-pro player who is attracted to Kenneth, who is also the captain of the opposing team in the championship game. When Kenneth is injured in the championship game of the tournament. the only way the game can go on is if Casey plays. the umpire agree with a stipulation Casey can go in the game but only if He is the batter and the game will be decided by the outcome of his at bat. If he gets a hit, Nate's team wins, but if he get out in anyway, Roger's team will win. Unlike the poem, this Casey isn't too arrogant to think that he can succeed with just one swing. Casey swings at the first pitch and somehow how to hit just clicks inside of him. He hit a home run.

The Proposal and the Wedding scenes on the pitcher's mound are not to be missed. The hardest part was the belief that anyone could have as much sex as Casey and Nate did that day and still have the energy to play in a tournament.

First off, this is a novella where the story (well, 90% of it) happens all in one day. The last 10% is the icing on the cake.

For a novella, Willa Okati has surely made something very enjoyable to read that ended with me once more exercising my goofy smile muscles. It had a great blurb and the story developed very well for such a short piece.

Loved it and both - especially the play of sweet-toothed men. My teeth ached at the thought of all of that sugary sweetness devoured by those men and women while reading this. Literally!

I’ve heard told that angst drives a book. That sweetness and light is fine in small doses but no one can make a story out of it.

That would be incorrect. This story by Willa Okati is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest, most loving stories I’ve read in quite some time. There is no angst. There is no jealousy. There is only a deep, abiding love between Casey and Nate.

The whole book shows it. Seriously. From the moment we meet these two men you know they are something special. They fit. So when Nate gives Casey a box of Cracker Jacks (or Poppernutter Crunch) and tells him to hold onto it, Casey wonders what’s inside the box that is so valuable.

What it is will delight those who want to believe in the power of true love, and may soften the heart of anyone who doesn’t believe in it.

Casey and Nate are an established couple, but I liked that they each are still learning new facets of each other. Particularly during a full day softball tournament Casey has to attend after losing a bet. There he finds new friendships with Nate's team, an eclectic bunch that make him feel welcome, and a wonderful surprise from Nate. An enjoyable light read.

Let me start with saying that there were times while I was reading this book that I would get confused as to who said what and had to go back and re-read the passage. Typically, this would not give a book a 5-star rating. However, in the case of Mighty Casey I think my confusion had more to do with me getting caught up in the story and losing track of the “he” than it did with the author’s writing. To put it simply, this was such a fun read that I got so engrossed in the story and I confused myself.

The bulk of Mighty Casey takes place over the course of one day. We learn from the beginning that Casey and his boyfriend Nate have been together for several years despite major differences that would seem to make them not compatible. Casey is a wedding planner and Nate HATES weddings – not marriage, but the actual wedding – and as much as Casey is a romantic and has fantasies of his ideal wedding, he loves Nate more than a ceremony. On the other hand, Nate is a HUGE sports enthusiast and Casey HATES all sports to the point that he has brain-dumped any and all rules of the games he learned growing up. These two should not be compatible, they shouldn’t work as a couple, yet they do. They are absolutely endearing and sexy as all get out in their love for each other, especially in the shower … yummy! As much as Casey dislikes sports, he finds himself enjoying the day at the softball tournament and not just the sexy fun times he and Nate keep sneaking off to have during the breaks between games.

But I don’t know which part of the story I liked the best. When Casey went up to bat OR the proposal scene in which Nate actually managed to fool Casey OR the epilogue. Heck, who am I kidding? I loved it all. I spent most of the time reading with a grin on my face. Ms. Okati has written an entertaining read that I devoured in a matter of hours and I am so excited about reading the sequel, Home Run. I cannot wait to spend more time with Casey and Nate and certainly hope that Mimi makes an appearance too.

We start this book with an established couple, Nate and Casey. Casey hates all things baseball/softball related due to an old poem about the Mudville Nine. Nate has 6 older sisters who have pulled him in to all their wedding non-sense over the years and hates all things wedding centered. Nate loves baseball. Casey is a wedding planner. Yup. Oil and Water. Right?

On the day the book describes, Casey is fulfilling an obligation to a bet he lost by attending a day’s worth of softball games that Nate has organized. He does so with a fair amount of grace and humor and the day is punctuated with sexy interludes in semi-public places.

Casey gets to see why Nate loves baseball so much through the eyes of Nate’s friends and co-workers and ends up actually having a pretty good time.

It’s no secret that Nate has something special planned for Casey and most of the day is a build up to this main event.

When the time comes, it is suitably sweet and touching with just the right amount of humor.

I liked this short story quite a lot. Normally I am not a fan of established couple books, unless I’ve been following the couple from the beginning. But in this case, the chemistry between the two is really hot and sweet and the story is fun and sort of exciting.

The baseball as background was cute. The secondary characters were funny and had their own stories to add, which gave depth to what could have been a fairly flat telling of one day in the life of this couple.

If you like baseball, sweet love stories of compromise and growth and frequent bouts of semi-public sex – you’ll love this short story by Willa Okati.

I really liked it and give it 4.5 of 5 hearts.

I love stories that are about established couples, I know the finding love stories are popular but I like the idea of lasting love. The two characters in this story are great and they blend well with each other. Not quite opposites attracting, but close.

The back and forth banter between them worked for me and I found myself smiling a lot. The authors play on major brand name items was particularly humorous. But as someone who has spent a tremendous amount of time at the ball field it was difficult to read everything revolving around that aspect of the story. It was all just so wrong.

The cast of secondary characters were fun and helped round out the story adding laughter and amusement. This is a fun quick read with a lot of interesting sexual encounters.

The references to Casey, Mudville and baseball were lost on me. It may have helped if the referred to poem had been included somewhere.
Nate loves softball and baseball and Casey does not. When Casey loses a bet with Nate he has to spend the day at a Charity softball content that Nate has arranged. As the day progresses Casey gets to know some of Nate's co-workers and changes his mind about the sport.
An enjoyable read that takes place in one day.

With all the high rating this story has, I'm going to guess this is a case of "it's me, not the book". I just didn't like it. Nate and Casey were sweet, but the sex scenes needed a total suspension of reality. And there was something about the authors writing style that bothered me. It seemed very wordy to me.
I didn't care for this book, but I certainly wouldn't turn anyone else away from it either.

So, this might be the first time I say this, but I wish this story had been shorter haha. I enjoyed it…love established couples and seeing how they're dealing with everyday life, and this was very sweet (and just a bit predictable), but I felt like the whole day was dragged out. Still, incredibly sweet couple and fun story!

Fun

This was a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. It was a fun read without any angst. It was not a book pretending to be great fiction but rather a book that will give you a few laughs. I will definitely read the sequel.
