The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 marked a number of significant historical turning points. It saw the end of the last vestige of the Roman Empire, which had been founded more than 1,400 years before, and marked the beginning of a period of dominance for the growing Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, this moment is taken as marking the end of the Middle Ages in Europe and the beginning of the Renaissance, as the fall of Constantinople was directly linked to both these events.

But just why was the city of Constantinople so important, and why did its conquest herald such massive changes? This is the story of one city and two empires and how they clashed to shape the modern world.

A concise and engaging overview of the earlier Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empire and the fall of Constantinople. Sultan Mehmed II was a very ambitious Sultan, and reading about them almost transports you to that era in the 1400s.

I enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more books in the series.

I appreciate this overview of the rise of the Ottoman Empire from the remnants of Byzantium. History is profound in how it impacts current events today. Reading this book one can visualize the big picture in how Islam spread throughout southern Eastern Europe and how the Ottoman Empire spread across the Middle East until its influence was weakened at the beginning of World War I.

good overview!

Quick study of the effects on the world with the introduction of artillery and the use of firearms in combat. Truly a pivotal moment in history. This book will leave you wanting more and that’s what I intend on doing in my search for more details of this momentous event.

concise

A conscience ancient history of the fall of Constantinople. Earth parts can be confusing with so many similar names. Later it makes more sense and provides good information.

Good brief sketch of the conditions leading up to the Ottoman Turks conquest of the "impregnable" city of Constantinople and the effects it had on Europe.
