A wyvern who doesn't trust humans. A human who implicitly trusts him.

Amell

I knew what monsters looked like, because I'd been raised by one, afraid and unable to get away because he was the strongest thing I knew. Until the day our village was attacked by a mythical beast and it almost made the monster wet himself.

After another bad day with the monster, I packed up and headed into the mountains to find that beast. When a strange, yellow-eyed man rescued me, I ended up finding a lot more than the beast I'd been looking for.

Lancelot

When the human I trusted and loved called me a monster after seeing my true form, I left everyone and everything behind and made a home for myself in the mountains, determined to never trust another soul for as long as I lived.

But then I stumbled across a strange, injured human, a human who wasn't afraid of me even after I showed him what I really was. Everything changed when I discovered he was my mate, and I realized I would do anything for this man, including punishing the humans who'd hurt him.

Liberation is a monster x human MM romance featuring a trans wyvern who is lonely but wouldn't admit it, a human who wants all the soft touches but doesn't know how to ask for them, and a romance that feels like being wrapped up in your favorite blanket.

The good
    + All the caretaking
+ Lance providing Amell with everything he could ever want
+ Lance acting as Amell's mattress all the time
    + So much cuddling
    + Gardening
    + Lance punishing Amell's uncle
+ So much time spent in shifted form
    + Deep conversations
+ Both of them overcoming their fears
    + Mutual hurt/comfort
    + Amell's appreciation for Lance's true form

The neutral
o I was an alpha reader for this book. My review is probably biased
o Lance, and very briefly Nox and Harlan, were the only decent people Amell had ever met. It would probably be good for him to have a larger social circle, but with their living arrangements they didn't really have a lot of options for socializing

The bad
    - Nox implied he played Cupid, but I don't really understand what he did to bring Lance and Amell together. Seems to me like Amell decided to go to the forest all by himself, and Lance didn't need anyone to convince him to let Amell stay

Quotes
Would it help him to watch me slowly murder every person who hurt him, or would it only add to his trauma?

"I like you because... because you're you. Because when you wrap your wings around me, I feel safer than I ever have. And when you bury your face in my hair and... and sniff me, I feel like I finally have somewhere I belong."

"You see me, Ame, the real me. Who I am. You don't see me as the wyvern or the human - you see who I am before I am them. You see my soul. You're the only one who has ever seen me."

This was pretty graphic and murdery and there was a lot of trauma, yet it's the sweetest and softest book I've read in a long time. Lance was such a romantic and caretaking was his love language. And the way he watched Amell all the time just because he wanted to was so sweet. I would definitely recommend this book if you're looking for something sweet and romantic with lots of hurt/comfort, and you're not bothered by some pretty heavy topics.

I was given this as an ARC reader and I chose not to read the blurb. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. Not once did I guess what was going on with Lance. He is an amazing MC and Amell. Our sweet Amell learning to love again these two are the sweetest couple and Fate did them good. Its an amazing read the series is so good. I somehow missed the first book but read it and I love this spin off. Mistvale was one of my MM first series and they kept me going!!

Intimate Moments Include:

Maybe it was because he wasn’t really human, and my life had taught me that humans were the worst kind of monsters. - Amell

Main Character Information:
Lancelot: Lance, Wyvern, Trans, can shift into other creatures, Wyvern: dark grey with yellow vertical slip eyes, Human: dark hair with the same eyes.
Amell: Ame, “Liebling”, 22, 5’5”, long black hair, green eyes

Whatever it was, I knew I would do anything he asked, and that was a dangerous thing. - Lance

Wyvern x Human Romance
Paranormal
Fated Mates
Hurt/Comfort
Abuse
Trans MC

I could kill his monsters for him out here, but I didn’t know how to fight the ones inside his head. - Lance

My Opinions on:
Another winner. This was so cute. I love how the focus was not on a MC being trans but that just being a part of their story. I also like how once they were bonded, Amell I thought that was a nice addition to the story. This was not very spicy/heat filled, but it was still so intimate and helped you feel the connection between the MCs and what they had gone through.

Favorite Part: Obviously this was when Amell’s uncle and Well, not that literally but Lance came through big time. I shouldn’t be so happy about but it wasn’t really if you ask me, it was well earned.

Favorite Side Character(s): N/A

Hardest/Most Difficult Part: The scenes where Amell has to relive the abuse he faced. It was written well but it hurt my heart to read.

Thoughts On World Building: Love this! Having Nox and Harlan come to see them in every book and at the end is so cute I love it.

When I’d set out to find the beast, I hadn’t known I’d end up finding an avenging angel instead, but I had no complaints. None at all. - Amell

Milestone Moments:

Because of you, I'm not scared of anything anymore. Because of you, I know what it's like to feel safe for the first time in my life. - Amell

Side Characters:
Nox:
Harlan:

"You're not, and will never be, a monster. Those men out there, they were the monsters, and you killed them. You killed them for me. You're not the monster, Lance. You're the hero. My hero," - Amell

The author needs to place more specific, detailed and highlighted content notice. Yes, I saw the warning in this book, but like the others it is just a continuation of information that not everyone always reads. The notice must be on a separate page, highlighted and alerting the content in detail and correctly.

One of the themes covered in this book is childhood and adult abuse (sexual and physical), collective rape incited by a relative (detail, this started when the character was still a child), mistreatment, torture, humiliation and everything goes downhill. It's okay that the scenes don't happen during the story, but are reported by the character and sometimes shown through dreams. Which, for those who are sensitive to the topic, is more than enough to trigger anxiety and everything else. In this case, I am sensitive.

This author's books are well written, well edited, with few errors.

This could be a low-angst book, but the theme doesn't allow it. Very heavy. There is no suffering between the pair, they find each other and are never separated. Which I really like. I like the way Lance protected Amell, even with his insecurities. The two together are beautiful. They are perfect for each other.

The end of Amell's executioners was very smooth in my opinion. They could have suffered much more, even showing their punishments in the abyss.

** The bonus scene was sweet, I'll see if I can find the part where the babies have already hatched from the eggs. Amell deserves all the happiness in the world.

A book with great promise and potential – its main characters sweet and loving in a supernatural world – but sadly falls rather short.

It contains several themes and storylines, tackling the likes of PTSD, trans identity, and body dysmorphia; all wrapped up in an intriguing fantasy world.

However, it's unfortunately all purely surface level. I loved the dynamics setup, but they don't go very far at all beyond progressing to shut scenes.
It's a shame, too, as the relationship between the two lovers was very sweet and so adorable, with both of them learning to live a simple lifestyle in a cave.

The plot is also weak, practically non-existent even.
So many points made me think we'd get something more, or were narrative threads... yet nothing actually happens.

All we focus on is trying to off someone, which I also found to be a controversial plot point that didn't consider the harm that would do to the target's child. Yes, the villain may deserve it, but such an act has wide consequences that should be at least considered.

Lastly, the book descends into chapters upon chapters of shut scenes and tips away the best part about the book for me (being a human x supernatural pairing) but its resolution.

This is honestly the best book that i’ve read of 2023 and i’ve read almost 500 books, this year alone.

Lance and Amell have stolen my heart and when I finished the epilogue, I was genuinely very sad that this story had come to an end. I’m apart of the authors Patreon and had the pleasure of seeing the chapters come out individually but painstakingly waited until I could read it in full without stopping and I am so glad I did.

These two truly are the meaning of Fated Mates and Stella Rainbow is one of the best authors of the trope that i’ve found. She writes all her characters with such class and personality that it’s hard to just stop at one book.

Lance was the absolute sweetest thing to ever exist and I just want to snuggle him so hard especially after all that he’s been through, along with my sweet baby Amell.

I can’t recommend this series and book enough, you will truly become addicted to this author just like I did. I am so excited for the next book that Stella puts out in this series and in general.

Such a great read!
This is the story of Lancelot, a wyvern shifter who lives in a cave away from the world. After being cursed with dark magic, Lancelot no longer feels that humans are safe around him. After his curse and shunning from his fellow wyverns, Lancelot leaves everything he knows to live on his own.
When he finds a human in the woods who’s been injured, he thinks maybe he shouldn’t get involved. Something about Amell pulls him close, and makes him want to help.
Amell would rather take his chances in the mountains then keep living with his abusive uncle. After he watches a creature his whole village calls an eagle chase his uncle and strike fear in him, Amell needs to meet this creature. Though everyone is worried about a rabid eagle, Amell knows that is not what he saw.
I absolutely loved this book. Both men have had trauma in their lives before they find each other, and they are so patient and supportive. Both of them have insecurities from their pasts, and they work so hard to make each other see how wonderful they are.

-Wyvern shifter

I was excited to read Liberation after I read Salvation, which was the first book in this monster series. I was looking forward to reading about a wyvern shifter cause I haven't come across too many books with that type of shifter. I was pleasantly surprised by the elements in this book along with the MC's. Both Amell and Lancelot have been hurt by people in their pasts but together they help heal those scars that other people have caused. I liked reading about these two getting to know one another better over a period of time, I thought things progressed really nicely.

Nothing happened too fast or was dragged out, and least not in my opinion. I quite liked their love story and I thought it was very unique. The fact that Lancelot could not only shift into a wyvern but he could also shapeshift into other creatures was very interesting! I loved how Amell gained certain powers/abilities after he and Lancelot mated, that was a really nice aspect that was completely unique to this story.

There weren't really any other characters that were in the story apart from the people who treated Amell so poorly. Nox and Harlan made an appearance but that was about it for side characters. I wished we got a bonus scene following up what Amell and Lancelot discussed in the epilogue, but that's a very minor thing. Overall I thought this book was a really great twist on the fated mate trope.

*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*

Ame and Lance are clearly meant to be together, and it’s lovely watching them become more confident in themselves and one another. They just seemed so genuinely happy with one another, and it was lovely to see.

Amell’s backstory should probably come with a trigger warning. There is one somewhat detailed memory and a number of references to very unpleasant situations that he has had to endure. The good bits definitely outweigh this, but it’s still rough to read.

I love how accepting Ame and Lance are of everything about one another. Fate definitely knows what they are doing (even when they’re letting Nox be their deputy, lol). I loved the gardening, cooking, and cozy cuddling—and the idea of them travelling the world together is perfect!

Looking forward to the next book.

🌶🌶 peppers - couple scenes
⚠️ trigger warnings - rape, abuse both sexual and physical. no warnings in the beginning of the book. darkest book of the series

This had a beautiful message of a loving, a person, no matter what they look like. Lance was so sweet and caring to Amell. Amell loved Lance in every form.

However, this book did show me the limit when it comes to monster romances. I was uncomfortable in the physical scenes since most happened in Lance's wyvern form. My brain would not let me think of anything other than a bat like dragon.

I really, really wish this book had trigger warnings. It was way darker than I was expecting. I'm very glad that Amell's uncle and his friends got what they deserved.

Monster love

The underlying love and connection between Lance and Amell is sweet, protective and equal. But each character holds a lot of baggage. Trigger warnings abound with this one and Amell's past is hard to read with flashbacks, nightmares and past events depicted on page but Lance takes care of him and Amell's monsters.
Good writing, witty and very heartfelt. I felt the trans wyvern was done really well and a unique approach to a trans MC. I love diverse characters and why shouldn't they be in a paranormal story too!!
I was intrigued by this world and think I need to find Nox see how his story played out.

A good book

Amell has seen true monsters, they were his family and the other towns men. So when a Wyvern comes swooping down to take them out and scares his Uncle he know he has to see it close up. He finds Lance and he knows he found his beast. Beautiful in all forms, he falls in love with him and Lance hall in love with him too. They are fated mates. There is no limit to the abuse his Uncle put him through with his friends, the rapes, the beatings and so much more. Lance will avenge him. I found it hard to picture Lance doing all the things described as a Wyvern. He just had to be so uncomfortable he though he said he was.

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

The first book in this series was so incredibly sweet, I was definitely interested in reading the next book. This book was just as amazing and the acceptance and support Lance and Ame shared with each other has me even more excited to continue the series.
I felt like Ame's trauma and Lance's gender identity were handled with the care and respect they deserved, rather than as a plot device. That's a huge deal for me.
Definitely purchasing the first two books and if the rest are this good, I'll be getting those as well and looking into more books by this author.

The sex scenes just make me think of zoophilia at its finest 🤢🤢🤢 I don't care if it's a human mind in the body of the beast. There's a limit to what kind of shifted sex I can tolerate and what makes me feels sick to my stomach with how wrong it feels to me. This is one of those🤢🤢🤢 and I'm so highly disappointed, because I loved the beginning of this Mistvale series🥺🥺 but the author just seems to have gone waaaaaay off the rails and into zoophilia with this one. I totally get being in the body you feel more right in, but at least be human or at least more human than monster during sex, so we don't feel like this is just reading zoophilia 🤢🤢🤢

sweet

This was a sweet hurt/comfort story. Two beings finding each other and helping heal each other. Both on the run, one running from his post the other running from his present finding the love they both dreamed about.
I loved the sweet moment. The getting to know each other moments before fate comes into play. The writing was good. The smexy was ok, the side characters were confusing. I’m wondering if it’s because I didn’t read the previous book. The ending didn’t make sense to me.

I absolutely loved this story. These two were just so perfect for each other. Both of them were so hurt by others and I loved how they just instinctively tried to trust each other. I just wanted to hug both of them. This was an excellent addition to this series and even though we got to see a couple of previous characters this book stands alone. I read this in one sitting and did not want to put it down. This was so good.

Perfect addition to Innocent Monsters!
Stella does an excellent job of setting up not only the story, but the possibly upsetting bits in the very thorough Blurb for this book.
I love a good fated mates story with heart! Lance and Amell are a cute couple with all of the awkward first love and attraction moments.
I also love how the plot gets tied up and gives you the HEA.

I love these so much

Another fab book. I love the original series and the first spin off with the afterlife group, but these ones are even better. Or maybe it's just that I can keep coming back to the same great sorry/world that makes them so good. Either way, it was great! 10/10 loved it. A bit of a darker background/past than some of the others so mind the trigger warnings if you're sensitive to those.

fantastic book two, a unique story

This is a paranormal romance, the second in the “Innocent Monster” series which should be read in order after “Lords of the Otherworld” series! This is a darker, “monsters” series tackles some darker themes but there’s a sweetness about these creatures finding their mates. It’s so cool to see characters from the previous series in this book! Give these monsters a chance and read about their HEAs!

Even though I like this book I feel the need to warn other readers. While some people view all shifter books as bestiality I don't because they generally have sex in their human forms. Well not in this one. The reason why makes sense when you learn of the human MC's traumatic childhood. I skipped the sex scenes. As you can see I still gave it a 5 star because I read it and am willing to read it again. To me that's a 5 star book.

Liberation is an absolute gem of a book: a sweet romance with well-developed characters. One an abused human and the other a wounded monster. Mi the sweet with some well-deserved slaughter and a few different perspectives on what is attractive and you have Liberation.

Nice

I appreciated this story as an installment in the series I liked the MC 's and the camo appearance of Nox and his mate. There was mention of past abuse but it was written in such a way that it was up to the read to imagine how bad it really was. Overall I recommend.
