S and I started this book, read a few chapters, then put it down and went on to other things and didn't feel compelled to come back to it for a really, really (really) long time. S just doesn't find these Magic Bone books particularly compelling, and I have to agree with him. I think they are fun as sort of travel guides to various locations, but the writing isn't great. The story in this one wasn't exciting, either. The dog just chases Roman cats around and that's pretty much the extent of it. At this point we took so long to read book three that I feel like he's already just about outgrown these in terms of reading level. I was reading this aloud to him when we first started this book, but now his reading skills have grown in leaps and bounds over the past year so he definitely doesn't need me to read these to him anymore, and even reading them on his own probably wouldn't challenge him. He received a whole box set of these as a gift, but maybe I'll pass them along to his younger sister.
I read this book with my daughter. I liked that this one seemed a bit different than the others we’d read (we haven’t been reading them in order). But, I didn’t like that they didn’t seem to see as many interesting places for us to read about at the end of the book. My daughter didn’t like that the dog kept repeating that dogs are smarter than cats.
