In Christina Holbrook’s affecting new story collection, women struggle to define for themselves the meaning of love and success. Traveling the world to find their place in it or coming home to claim what is theirs, her heroines are vulnerable, fierce, and foolhardy—often in equal measure. Above all, they are complex and contradictory individuals, always on the verge of hope. Holbrook's debut novel, All the Flowers of the Mountain, was published in 2022 and won the 2023 Colorado Book Award for Romance and the 2023 IPPY Bronze Medal.

This is a wonderful read, either all at once, or savored like a fine wine bit by bit. The stories are word rich with complicated characters who are relatable and human, lumps and all. I found myself urging them on through missteps and triumphs as if they were flesh and blood. An intelligent, emotional read with a splash of hope and humor; this is a book to curl up with.

I really enjoyed these stories, vignettes that give insight and poetry to the life experiences of young women taking tentative or bold steps in life. By turns poetic and lush, or restrained and poignant, the stories create vivid images of hope, loss, exploration and resilience.

Her first person narratives were my favorite. When she switched to third person I felt slightly more disconnected, especially because the stories were so short. However, short & sweet was just the thing I needed to kick off my 2024 reading.
