The Common Core State Standards present unique demands on students ability to learn vocabulary and teachers ability to teach it. The authors address these challenges in this resource. Work toward the creation of a successful vocabulary program, guided by both academic and content-area terms taken directly from the mathematics and English language arts standards. Benefits - Learn to incorporate CCSS vocabulary into teaching and student learning. - Recognize the impact that quality vocabulary instruction can make on reading ability, mental process, and academic achievement. - Understand how students learn vocabulary. - Make academic and content-area terms from the CCSS relevant to students. - Create a system of assessment that tracks students progress with CCSS vocabulary.
I see this book as a useful resource that I will be referencing periodically throughout the year.
Though just a review of his earlier works, the first few chapters are great for anyone trying to get into the vocabulary scene who's not sure how to do it. There is the justification for explicitly teaching vocabulary, which is always great to remind yourself of, then his 6-step method which can easily be translated into a 5-day calendar. Marzano includes many examples for each of his steps so you have a clear guide to follow and aren't striking blindly based on his description of how to roll this out (you can also reference his earlier works in vocabulary for even more examples of these steps).
The really juicy part for me comes after the rehash of his old stuff. Marzano reemphasizes the importance of vocabulary in our CCSS world, then lays out a BEAUTIFUL breakdown of words taken from CCSS that kids will need to know, categorized so they can be taught in a way that's easier for kids to learn, and labeled by grade level so you don't have to wonder which words are most pressing for you to teach. He offers advice on how to figure out which words to teach as well.
Sadly there are no word lists for content subjects, just math and ELA, but this is an excellent starting place if you are searching for help with vocabulary.
I really liked the first part of the book and will use many of the suggestions for teaching vocabulary. The rest of the book is good and I will reference it when preparing to teach lessons and getting the vocabulary which I will be covering.
