Something About Maudy

Rate this book
Blackfish United Methodist Church was dying when Pastor Maude and her cat, John Wesley, accepted the assignment and moved into the parsonage. The elderly congregation did not want her. Pastor Maudy represented radical change with her navy-blue Porsche and actress background.

Pastor Maude finds her place with the people as they all become embroiled in a tumultuous riot of assault, floods, and burglaries while the threat of closure hangs over the small congregation.

Maude and John Wesley together with Ralph, Maude’s burly boyfriend, eventually sort out the wave of challenges while giving birth to a vision of how a contemporary small town church can serve its community.

Something (not) About Maudelin

Something About Maudy turned out to be something of a pleasant surprise.

Why had I expected the kind of chick-lit whereby the greatest problem our heroine faces is hooking the alpha male? And where she spends her meantime slipping through the clutches and claws of inferior sorts, those not quite up to scratch – awful pun intended, sorry. Was I judging a book by its cover? Blue Porsche, sexy pink slip of a thing the young Maudy looks positively poured into, the faithful feline…

I obviously hadn’t noticed the church in the background, but was nevertheless taken by the cover to not want to read the blurb, to just dive in…

Without giving too much away, the book is written in 1st person narrative, hardly discursive but a free-flowing, chatty style that swiftly drew me into Maudy’s world, not so much via my being a fly on the wall, but more as her confidant, by the way she introduced to the characters making up her parish – she’s a pastor, by the way, how different and unexpected is that!

Cleverly, though, it isn’t so obvious at the beginning, and – this is the last I’ll say re-the story – Maudy, against her nature, flirts with a total stranger in a shoe shop – I think it’s a shoe shop; I know she gets her heels stuck in the carpet. Ok, maybe not, but the point is – no pun intended this time – is that, no sooner the flirting over and she’s having lunch with her guy (who at least turns out to be bald so there’s hope for all of us).

But no, the book doesn’t take that route at all. It’s a bit of a red herring.

And so I recommend you read this wonderfully philanthropic book, one with an optimistic outlook, a book that offers faith and hope, without ever reverting to the trite or saccharin; it’s well worth it.

SOMETHING ABOUT MAUDY is wonderful!
Something About Maudy is a well written, inviting story from the very beginning.
I thoroughly enjoyed this authors style. You don’t have all the facts in the beginning yet you never feel lost, Delinda has a gentle way of informing you with bits and pieces of information as the story unfolds. A touch of romance and warm sincere characters draw you into this cozy story.
The main character deals with her own drama caused by a vicious attack and head trauma. Adding to her challenges are becoming a new pastor, memory problems, stubborn people, gossip, a new relationship, family, finances, prejudice, and crime.
But ultimately making peace with her past is Paster Maude’s main problem. As a woman and a pastor, she deals with inner turmoil such as finding middle ground where she can remain true to her faith and still maintain her feminine and sexy side.
I have dealt with a traumatic brain injury myself and felt the author did a great job of sharing information while integrating it into the story. On a personal note, even though this is a story, the information and characters she shared about the elderly members from her church have helped me understand better some of the issues my own elderly family members are dealing with.
Religion, what is love, finding where you belong, community, and happiness, are all packaged wonderfully in this great story.

Pastor Maude finds herself assigned to a dying church in the small town of Blackfish. The few remaining members are over seventy and most of them are senile. What can she do to safe her congregation and her church?

I grew up in a smaller community United Methodist Church. They were always fighting to keep their doors open and they still do, so I can relate to the plight and the personalities of the members. I don’t believe in the institution of religion, but I understand the need for churches for a place of gathering and support.

The author address’ issues that affect our communities and youth of today: bullying, theft, divorce and infidelity. She’s very insightful and knowledgeable when it comes to dealing with head traumas and the aftereffects. I enjoyed the way she slowly revealed the incident that happened between Maudy and her deceased husband, Hal. Because of what happened, she’s afraid to move on to another relationship, until she meets Ralph.

This story made me cry with sadness and happiness. I also chuckled over the antics of the elderly church members. If you like a good Christian story, with no swear words, or graphic sex, you’ll enjoy this tale. I give it 5 feathers.

There really is something about Maudy. A well-written book with charming characters and an interesting story. Pastor Maude, protagonist at the center of the book, is a lovely person. That has as much to do with who she is as it does with her vocation as a pastor. A bit of a worrier, she's also resilient and has faced down her share of demons. She has her hands full, too. That includes Ralph, a new boyfriend she literally stumbles upon when her heels get caught in a rug. All sorts of other interesting [and sometimes cranky] characters populate the little town of Blackfish. That town, not too far from Seattle, is where Maudy has to figure out how to save a dying church. There she's confronted by all sorts of new challenges, both personal and professional. How does she do? You'll have to read this thoroughly enjoyable story and find out for yourself. A great read!

A really heartwarming book!

As a new, female pastor in Blackfish Maudy already faces plenty of challenges with her elderly and unforgiving congregation, but the one in her heart is the hardest to cope with.

I loved the way the romance was pulled out into a beautiful relationship without the need for sex scenes or swearers. The characters come alive on the page and grow in strength as the originally frosty welcome from the old folks in Blackfish, warms through Maudy's attentiveness and naturally caring attitude, to a positively toasty acceptance of her, her cat and her new guy, Ralph.

This is an excellent, clean read with a heartwarming, but serious side to it. All the usual accidents, tragedies and vagaries of real life are exposed in this carefully constructed book, but with Maudy's determination, love and hope, the community of Blackfish looks set for an excellent future.

I love the way this story unfolded over time. It was like revealing a brilliantly constructed puzzle piece by piece. It’s a heart-warming love story about a woman who suffers a shocking attack. She suffers from memory loss, issues with her family and much more. This book gives us an interesting insight into the life of a female pastor. It’s certainly not a subject many writers have touched. I think that’s a shame. Women in the clergy have an important role to play and this book offers a strong and dependable role model. Other issues covered like bullying, theft, marriage breakdown and more are certainly relevant and add credos to the many problems facing people and their beliefs today.

This is the type of book that will touch many hearts, regardless of your religious affiliations I am sure it will be a winner.

I recommend this refreshingly different book to all fans of contemporary fiction.
Pastor Maudy is a wonderfully different character with a big heart. The elderly declining church congregation weren't ready for the stiletto heeled Porche driving pastor determined to stand her ground and extend the reach of the church deep into the local community. She hides her own doubts and deals with each calamity the town faces with her own special style.
As well as great characters and humour through Maudy reaching out to the community the book covers issues important to all of us. Violence and the safety of children and young adults at school, bullying, divorce and infidelity and the long term effects of brain injuries.
The book gives a lovely slice of modern day living and how care in the community should happen in practice.
A very enjoyable read.

I didn't really know what to expect when I downloaded Something about Maudy with my KU subscription but I am glad I did. Maudy's assignment causes a reaction in the town of Blackfish as she attempts to take control of her congregation, and amid the 'goings on' and problems she has to face. Maudy is quite a character, she's strong, flawed and funny at times.

Delinda McCann has made Maudy believable and the same can be said for the secondary characters in Something About Maudy even John Wesley!. The MC is a modern woman in a modern world. I enjoyed following her journey and the problems she and her congregation had to face. It is written in the first so we really get to know Maudy. At times she made me smile with her inner thoughts.

A well rounded story and a well written book.

This is a kick your shoes off and get comfortable read.

This is one of those books you can get comfortable with. The story is nicely written. I enjoyed Maudy and her congregation. These characters are well developed and fun. I loved the humor, especially when Maudy discovered why Ralph's face was so smooth. I laughed out loud with that one. She loves cute shoes and so do I. This novel has clean romance as well as tackling difficult subjects which tug at the emotions. It was a treat following Pastor Maudy around and watching her handle life inside the congregation as well as her personal affairs. Maudy is the new pastor of a dying church with members who are resistant to change. This was a pleasure to read and watch Pastor Maudy grow.

Enjoyable Story.

I began reading this book without looking at the summary. It starts out as an interesting tale about a woman wanting to have a day to herself in the big city. In this case the city is Seattle. I thought this was a romance, or a women’s contemporary literature novel. As I began to read chapter two I realized I was completely wrong.

If you’ve read the synopsis you already know Maude is the Pastor in a small community church. She and her boyfriend Ralph work together to solve the problems and challenges in their congregation. The story is well written, fun, and engaging. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, and romances, you’ll adore this book.

How delightfully refreshing! An interesting romance without the EVERY SINGLE anatomic detail! I enjoyed the little mystery, delighted in the antics of the congregation and even chuckled along as I read along with them. An interesting perspective and so totally in keeping with the times, A female minister in a small town. Yes, times they are "a changin", but the core values remain the same, just with a updated point of view.

Ralph and Maudy sound like they could really make a go of something lasting and real, steps that today's relationships have skipped over. Wonderfully entertaining and so very well written! Hats of to McCann for reminding us what a good romance is supposed to be.
