Miss Winslowe's "Wallflower Society" is less a statement of the ladies' dire prospects for marriage than a pleasant get-together for tea. Still, Daniel, Earl of Colebrooke is outraged that his marriageable sister, Gretchen, has joined such a resigned group of spinsters. Then he gets to know the fetching Miss Winslowe --- hardly a spinster and anything but resigned.
A LITTLE MIX-UP ...
As attraction blossoms, so does a predicament that could be disastrous for their romance. Gretchen's been discovered in Miss Winslowe's garden with a stone cupid in her hand and a man lying dead at her feet. Certainly Daniel's sister never intended to kill London's most eligible bachelor!
A LITTLE SCANDAL ...
It's up to Daniel to protect the family name and to keep the unfortunate accident a secret. But when the body disappears, they're all left to wonder just what in the ton is going on --- and where in the name of love could it possibly be headed?

Amelia Grey has added everything a historical romance fan could ask for. A dashing hero, an impulsive young lady and reoccurring dead body has all the elements you need for A LITTLE MISCHIEF. This sensual novel is a wonderfully entertaining tale for any Regency historical romance fan!
Miss Isabella Winslowe's Wallflower Reading Society has been a huge success. That is until one day she finds Gretchen, the Earl of Colebrooke's sister, in the garden standing over a dead body. To protect this young girl and get to the bottom of this disaster, she must deal with Gretchen's brother, Daniel Colebrooke. He is insufferable, overbearing and makes her heart flutter every time he is near. Isabella easily becomes addicted to the adventure and mischief, but it's the charming earl and his passionate kisses that she loves the most.
Daniel is beginning to feel the same way. While he began this endeavor in order to keep a close eye on Isabella as they try to solve this murder, it's becoming quite obvious the unique miss is tempting this eligible bachelor in all the right ways.
A LITTLE MISCHIEF is everything you've come to expect from a novel by Amelia Grey. One thing I have always come to love about Ms Grey's novels is the dialogue. It's always sharp and witty, adding so much to the overall charm of the novel. Isabella and Daniel share a great chemistry and part of that is because of the dialogue Ms Grey supplies her characters. Their witty banter is always entertaining and so much fun to read.
"If you look closely, you'll see his white shirt is now stained red with blood."
"Yes, I do see it," she answered, wishing she could make him understand that she was trying to be positive for Gretchen's sake. "But if he came back to life once before, he can do so again."
Daniel stepped closer to Isabella and said, "You are impossible to talk to."
"How convenient that I was just thinking the same thing about you."
There's a certain appeal to the connection they share through irritating each other. Mainly because they can only annoy each other for so long until that anger they share turns into passion. The build up of their mutual attraction was done extremely well, giving the reader just enough to tempt, but never enough that you could stop reading. A LITTLE MISCHIEF was extremely difficult to put down because the story sucks you in and always engages your interest.
Isabella was a fiery, intelligent woman that worked hard to achieve what little independence she could grasp. Though she was an innocent in many ways, she believed in living life to the fullest. So when she wanted something, she went for it. Daniel was exactly the opposite. He is looking for a quiet reserved life without complications, so he must find an acceptable and proper wife. He was very protective of those he loves and also very distrustful of others. Both protagonists were typical for a historical romance but it was their chemistry together that made their story unforgettable. I find it very rare to have two characters that fit so perfectly together and in such an obvious way.
A LITTLE MISCHIEF is an all too brief novel that fans will love to pick up again and again. I have read the ending a few times, because it is so absolutely charming and completely satisfying. The plot line of this novel is funny and vastly entertaining because of the solid story Ms Grey builds throughout and the impressive characters she adds to the mix. The mystery added in is very light and is somewhat comical at parts. It's not heavy or extremely dramatic, which suits the story well because overall, this is a very light read. It is a cute and alluring story that is sure to leave you smiling by the end. With A LITTLE MISCHIEF, you have the talented and accomplished author Amelia Grey doing what she does best—writing an overall superb novel. Whether it's the witty prose, the humorous plot or the outstanding characters, readers will find something or everything to fall in love about A LITTLE MISCHIEF.
Amelia Grey has thrown together a self proclaimed spinster, a rogue turned honorable earl, and a little mischief. The result is a sweet historical romance with just the right amount of mystery to keep you guessing.
Isabella has figured out that confidence is sexy, that combined with her natural mischievousness turns her into a desirable woman. Daniel has realized that along with the title of Earl he needs a wife, only once he lays eyes on Isabella his idea of the perfect docile wife goes right out the window. These two just can’t seem to agree that they would be perfect together, each thinking they want something else. They have great banter and tease each other with ease.
The dead man in the garden, the great mystery that brings Isabella and Daniel together. There is so little to go on, yet our hero and heroine piece together the clues. It is fun to discover evidence right along with them. You will be guessing up to the end!
Review to be posted at Reading Between the Wines blog.
This is the first book that I have read of Amelia Grey. She makes reading a book truly a joy. The characters were really good and there was tension between them as they figured things out. There even was funny parts in the book. I really loved it.
Good book, Isabella runing a book club and Gretchen is a member.
Gretchen think she has kills Lord Throckmorten.
Bur when Daniel her brother comes he is not in the backyard of Isabella's. He thinks she is a troublemaker.
Sparks began when they meet.
Isabella does not want to marry but they team up to find out what happened to Throckmorten. They solve the mystery and they find themselves more attracted to each other
They find the love for each and that is meant for them.
An entertaining story of enemies to lovers set during the Regency period. I loved how Isabella refused to be pigeon-holed by Society's dictate on proper behavior and made her way in the world. Daniel was a worthy adversary as a former rogue that felt he needed to clean up his act as he is thrust into the role as the new earl. I loved the banter between the two of them and how they were determined to help those who are closest to them. I will have to read more by this author.
Absolute rubbish. Laughable plot, historical inaccuracy (wrong names - Sharon, Gretchen... oh, FFS! - etc.), sad lack of originality. A total waste of time.
I was really excited to read this book. I was a bit disappointed because it's not as intriguing as the description . However, it is still a good book. Very light hearted and fun, I just like a good mystery.
Ah, mystery, murder, men shy of marriage, mercenaries, and a merry mischief-maker all mixed together. The ton is titillated and the gossip grows.
Daniel Fletcher Coldbrooke, The Seventh Earl of Coldbrooke needs a wife. He doesn’t really want a wife, but needs one. As a second son, he’d been a gentleman rogue until tragedy struck his family. Now he needs respectability and an heir. Of course, he wants a submissive, obedient wife. It would be nice if he loved her, but that’s not a deal-breaker. He's dedicated to getting himself and his sister Gretchen married in one Season.
As we know, the best laid plan can go astray. With the help of one unconventional mischief-maker, his plan is set on its ear, or so it seems. This is a Regency romp to enjoy.
Isabella Winslowe, pretty much abandoned by her father and left in the care of a spinster aunt, has respectability and acceptance in the ton, but her plan is to live independently like her aunt as soon as she's old enough to come into her inheritance. Obedient and submissive are not in her vocabulary much less in her personality. She’s intelligent, compassionate, adventurous, and determined—far too outspoken.
Her first encounter with the earl of Coldbrooke sets her on edge. He's condescending, arrogant, judgmental and about as approachable as a wild boar. But he is so impressive, intriguing and powerful. He makes her heart race. Isabella and Daniel, thrown together to help save his sister Gretchen’s reputation and solve a mysterious murder, strike sparks off each other and ignite a slow burn that Daniel has a hard time controlling. While in cahoots and going on clandestine ventures, Daniel finds keeping his hands off her is as much of a challenge as solving the murder is.
The secondary characters add tension and intrigue. While Society Rules create worrisome times for anyone who doesn’t conform—which Daniel and Isabella can’t seem to do. My goodness, some of the chances they take are risky and so exciting.
Amelia Grey has a fantastic way of bringing characters to life. They pulsate with emotions and sparkle with humor while threading their way through the minefields of Society Rules to assuage out-of-control cravings and still stay ‘respectable’. She never allows the story to lag and she sprinkles in clues and a few red herrings throughout to keep the reader guessing. However, she keeps the reader turning pages with the steadily growing love story that enchants. A Little Mischief is playful and seductive with a touch of sad and serious, Most of all, it is uplifting, a Regency romance that leaves the reader feeling good. All has come right for the hero and heroine and for some other nice people, too. This one is a sparkling happy-ever-after.
A murder mystery raises this Regency novel above the average comedy of manners and morals. In spite of the serious nature of a murder (this man refuses to die the first time he's struck), the story is fairly light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek.
Isabella Winslowe has developed her spunkiness from emulating her cherished, spinster Aunt Pithany. In fact, that is what Isabella wants for herself; a life without a husband, traveling within the ton, admired and free. She has taken under her wing a bevy of young ladies who are in the same situation she was in during her first Season. They bat their eyelashes and flash their fans without gracing the men who approach them with any look at their faces. Isabella knows this is why marriageable bachelors stay away; men dislike these behaviors.
One of her chicks is Lady Gretchen Colebrooke. In spite of the social taboo, she has a tryst in Isabella's garden with Boswell Throckmorton. When Isabella finds them, Gretchen is holding a cherub statuette and Throckmorton lies dead on the ground. Gretchen's brother, Lord Daniel Colebrooke, blames the whole matter on Isabella. In spite of their sparring, Isabella and Daniel join forces to protect Gretchen's reputation and try to find the murderer.
Much of the story is about Daniel and Isabella coming to grips with their attraction to each other. Each is convinced the other would be a poor marriage partner. This is a quick and charming read.
This book was cute. Really, really cute. I wish I had better adjectives to describe it then that but I don’t because honestly, that is all this book needs. It’s not a hard or consuming or soul gripping read. It’s a light read, perfect for a summer afternoon or a rainy fall day or days when you feel like reading but you don’t want too much depth. There is a slight mystery (or rather, there is a young-Lady-standing-over-a-dead-man-and-when-said-young-Lady’s-brother-comes-to-see-what-sister’s-friend-was-talking-about-sees-no-dead-body-and-doesn’t-believe-said-friend/little-sister--but-that’s-ok-because-the-presumed-dead-man-shows-up-at-a-party-two-days-later-where-he-is-found-dead(again)-by-above-mentioned-young-Lady,-and-brother,-and-friend,-but-then-his-body-goes-missing-before-they-can-figure-out-what-to-do-and-now-we-have-a-classic-case-of-WHO-DONE-IT). And of course, there is the inevitable romance between the brother and female lead that while cute and fun, never falls into deep emotion depth or angst which I will admit, can be a blessed relief from some of the romance novels I usually tend to read.
The characters were good overall but a little flat at times. I thought Isabella was a bit immature and bounced between being a capable and independent woman to insecure and immature quite quickly. Daniel, at times, fared no better. I wasn’t very happy with the but other than that this story was light and airy. I could see it, with a few tweaks, being made into a romcon movie because the mystery plotline was engaging and the romance fun and airy. Not the best I’ve read but certainly not the worst. I’d read more by this author.

This is a light hearted charming read, with a tad of mystery. I chuckled with the main characters tit a tat conversational exchange. It was a relief to enjoy a historical read that was romantic and not overly sexual. Grey’s dialog and social rules were appropriate to the time period. She draws us back in time, allowing us to sneak a peak into a world were rules are everything. A man dies and the mystery surrounding it points fingers at possible suspects, including Daniel’s sister. Daniel wants a wife to look pretty and social, instead spunky and smart Miss Winslowe enters his life turning it upside down. It’s up to the both of them to solve the mystery of the murder without breaking any of society’s rules. This is a 4 star read for me.
Yesterday I finished A Little Mischief. So, here is what the book is about:
We have a precocious heroine, Miss Isabella Winslowe. At first she didn't purposely seek out trouble, it just land it at her doorstep after her reading group. She finds Gretchen Colebrooke hovering over a body. Both of them believe he's dead, so they decide to involve Gretchen's brother the Earl of Colebrooke.
When Daniel arrives back to Isabella's home to find there's no body and thinking it's a ploy to leg-shackle him. Isabella outrage by the notion, she would do something so low like that. They both agree that Gretchen is not to attend anymore of Isabella's reading group.
Later on that evening Daniel, Gretchen, and Isabella see the presume dead man. However, the happiness doesn't last long when they discover the man is actually dead. Now Daniel and Isabella decide to work together to figure out who-dune-it. While trying to solve the case, both have trouble keeping there mitts off each other.
Overall, I liked it. The story was adorable with the hero and heroine trying to keep things professional, yet have the hardest time fighting what feels so right. Both Daniel and Isabella have this need to protect Gretchen. So, if you are looking for a quick fun read with a dash of mystery I would suggest to you A Little Mischief by Amelia Grey.

This little who-dun-it romance is quite adorable. Part mystery tangled in the web of romance with some spunk and sass that will have you snickering as you try to figure out who did what, when and where. Oh and where did the body go?
Lady Isabella Winslowe is quite the treat amongst the ton and is thought to be a bit on the strange side. A lovely flower who has decided that being a wall flower is not for her and her fellow awkward ladies, Isabella starts a Ladies Reading Society. It's what she does behind closed doors with these awkward ladies that has the bookies at White's Gentleman's Club placing wagers.
Daniel Colebrooke, the seventh Earl of Colebrooke has returned to London to not only find himself a wife that will serve as his broodmare but also a husband for his dear sister. He's handsome as sin and the most sot after man in all of the ton. Caring and daring are just a few of his finer traits but stubbornness and his lack of want for female opinions is just a bit of what gets our delightful Earl in a bit of a muck.
The pace of this story is quite nice with its encounters of kisses in secluded places, comic games of switch-er-o with a less desirable gentlemen of questionable means and stubborn opinionated hard headed nobles of both sexes.
I found this to be quite charming with it's tit for tat and satisfying ending.
This is a re-release from 2003 and a delightful read. This historical has a little bit of suspense and a lot of romance. The characters of Isabella and Daniel are perfect together. The connection they have even from their first scene together jumps right off the page. I love that Isabella seems so strong, confident and loves a good mystery and yet she has decided she should just become a spinster and has never even been kissed. She helps “wallflowers” come into their own by teaching them they are worthy and how to act. Yet she is just as much of the innocent as they are. She is innocent and worldly wrapped in one package. Daniel is written very well too. He is of course handsome and rich but he is also protective of those he loves and has a heart of gold.
Honestly this book has the basis of so many other historicals but it is such a delightful read that it is a must read. It is the perfect beach book or sit around and relax book. It is a very quick read and you really don’t want to stop until you get to the end. If you love the historical romance genre then this should be near the top of your “TBR” list. You will not be disappointed.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Amelia Grey delivers a light hearted mystery wrapped around a comedy of manners. Her heroine, Isabella Winslowe, created the Wallflower Society to help shy ladies gain confidence to make their debut among polite society. Instead, she finds Lady Gretchen Colebrooke standing over the very eligible, but very dead, Boswell Throckmorten. Lady Gretchen admits to a secret meeting with her beau – a story that her brother, Lord Daniel Colbrooke cannot believe, particularly when he and Isabella cannot find the body. Mayhem ensues as Isabella and Daniel walk a tight rope over their reputation among the ton and their unexpected attraction for the other.
Grey hits the hallmarks of a Regency romp – witty dialogue, the stiff upper lip in the face of disaster, and an independent heroine who charms the reluctant hero. Grey’s writing breathed life into the bumbling, but humorous, attempts to restore order into the characters’ lives.
I received an ARC from the publisher for this review.
Cute is the word, I often use cute about HR, but some just are that cute.
Isabella wants to be spinster, she thinks she will be free that way. And she also holds a club every week. A club named The Wallflower club by certain idiotic members of the ton. But back to Isabella who is outspoken, nice, fun and yes a troublemaker.
In comes Daniel, the brother of a member of her reading group. Oh he is an arrogant ass. At first that is. But we all know they will fall in love..eventually. But before that there will be angry looks, banter and then, something quiet else.
But this is not just about their romance. There is also a missing body and Isabella sticking her nose where she should not. A light little murder mystery.
I read the book titled A Little Mischief by Amelia Grey and it bit of mystery and romance. I usually like more depth in reading historical romances. This story didn’t quite give it to me. The characters seemed kind of ho hum. Isabella Winslow and Daniel Colebrook who are the love interest are going around searching for clues in a murder. I really didn’t feel that they would take it upon themselves to investigate a murder of a peer, when a family member should have done it. I would like more sexual tension to get the juices going. I would not waste my money on buying it because there are better ones available.
Daniel Colebrooke, Earl of Colebrooke, is not happy with Isabella Winslowe. First, she's invited his sister to her salons which are being dubbed a haven for wallflowers. Now, Isabella has brought his sister back to his home with the ridiculous story that she's killed a man she was meeting in Isabella's garden. Well, the man isn't dead. At least not this time. But when the man ends up with a knife in his chest and Daniel's sister standing over him, that's when things start to get complicated. Of course, our heroine is headstrong and insists that she be allowed to help solve the mystery and Daniel can't resist. A quick little read. Not Grey's best work but still okay.
This was a quick little read. Because it was so short they really had to go from being annoyed to being attracted but I loved that they kept kissing and denying that this was something that they should be doing. The little murder mystery that was in between the relationship was great in keeping them together. I will definitely look for others by AG.
If I could give this book 2.5 stars, I would. I thought the story was pretty good, and I liked the main characters. However, the writing seemed a little clunky (a touch too much telling rather than showing, perhaps?).
This is the first book I've read by this author; I'll probably read a more recent book of hers and see if the editing has improved.
This was a charming, light read that kept me smiling. It was nice to read about a heroine I could relate to: spunky, defending others, independent, and curious. It's a rather short book, so the romance moves quickly, and the murder mystery adds to the fun.
