When a good man with a troubled past perishes in a fire, only Leah Nash can unravel the tangled mystery behind his death. In the quiet town of Himmel, the sudden blaze that engulfs the local library is only the beginning. Among the smoldering ashes, a lifeless body is found—it's Luke Granger, a hardworking young man striving to escape his family's criminal past. His tragic death shocks the community, and although she is initially hesitant, intrepid journalist Leah can’t help but investigate. As Leah delves into the case, she untangles a twisted web of lies, deceit, and dark secrets that threaten to destroy the reputations of the town’s most affluent citizens. Luke's death is just the tip of the iceberg in a chilling tale of greed, love, and thwarted ambition. As she races against time to uncover the truth, Leah finds herself caught in a perilous game where one wrong move could be her last. Can Leah expose the hidden truth before it's too late, or will she become the next victim in a dangerous game of cat and mouse?
Susan Hunter is a happy introvert who lives with her husband Gary, an extreme extrovert, in rural Michigan.
She spent some years as a reporter and then as the managing editor of a small daily newspaper. From there Susan went on to work at a university in publications and marketing where she honed her skills at appearing engaged in academic meetings, while internally composing her grocery list. She also taught a few classes as well—in English composition, that is, not in faking your way through meetings.
In addition to writing the Leah Nash series, Susan enjoys reading other people’s writing, watching classic films, occasional walks and snarky conversation with old friends and family, eating chocolate chip cookies, and answering emails from her readers. Visit her website, susanhunterauthor.com
This is another good novel in the Leah Nash series. Hunter continues to provide a good balance of Leah's personal life and an amateur sleuth investigation. Leah's love life is settled so there is less romantic drama than in previous novels. Leah has been asked by a family member of a murdered man to find out who the killer is. That means this time Leah is not aggressively barging in to a police investigation. She has made peace with the antagonistic Ross but manages to alienate another member of the sheriff department. I like the positive aspects of the character development of Leah. She is not a static character but is growing. The plot moves along well as Leah comes up with many suspects and plausible villains. Her investigation is not so much identifying the villain as much as eliminating various suspects. I like how she uses her contacts to gather information. There is a bit of suspense near the end and a twist that finally gave Leah the answers she needed. There is a bit of humor too. (I'll never look at a pineapple again without laughing.)
This is a good addition to the Leah Nash series. While it is quite a ways down the line, it reads well on its own.
Another great read by Susan Hunter! When a local man is murdered, his mother begs Leah to find his killer. The story is propelled by many twists and turns, well developed characters, much action and drama, and fine storytelling. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
I really enjoy this series and look forward to the next release. Leah is a wonderful , yet somewhat flawed , protagonist. Her relationship with Coop was a long time coming and I would love to see it move forward to marriage. Excellent writing…
Great book, love the characters of the Leah Nash series. Leah is asked to look into a murder of a young man while at his second job at the library! some folks are protesting and would like to bans some books at the library. Are these folks responsible for the murder?? Leah kept us guessing, what a thriller. Looking forward to the next in the series!!
Luke Granger is well loved bookstore employee, and has he chance to have his dream come true by being offered to buy the local bookstore in the town of Himmel, but this dream is cut short when he is found dead at the local library fire. Leah Nash, part owner of the local newspaper, nonfiction author, and now fiction writer is asked by Luke’s mom to find the killer. As she starts digging, she finds more than she bargained for. It’s always a treat to read Leah’s adventures – even when I need to put the book down because I know what ever she is planning to do will not end well, and then take a deep breath because I want to know what happens!
If you like a who-dun-it murder mystery with twists, then this one is for you! Leah owns a small town news paper, she's also an inspiring author working on her first fiction mystery series who happens to be dating the county sheriff. When a young man is murdered in town, she promises his mother she will find the truth about his murder. With lots of potential suspects, and some twists, Leah sets out to fulfill her promise.
This was an intriguing story to keep you reading, to the end of the book. Good plot, and good characters that I enjoyed. Highly recommend Given arc for my voluntary review
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
In “Dangerous Games,” Susan Hunter delivers another gripping installment in the Leah Nash Mysteries series. This eleventh book follows intrepid journalist Leah Nash as she investigates the mysterious death of Luke Granger, a young man with a troubled past, found dead in a fire at the local library in the quiet town of Himmel. As Leah delves deeper, she uncovers a web of lies, deceit, and dark secrets that threaten to unravel the town’s most affluent citizens.
“Dangerous Games” is a masterful blend of suspense, intrigue, and well-crafted storytelling. Susan Hunter’s ability to create a vivid and immersive setting is evident from the first page. The small-town atmosphere of Himmel is brought to life with rich descriptions and a cast of complex, believable characters.
Leah Nash, the protagonist, is a standout. Her determination, intelligence, and wit make her a compelling character to follow. Hunter skillfully balances Leah’s personal struggles with her professional drive, creating a multi-dimensional heroine who is both relatable and admirable. The narrative is peppered with Leah’s sharp observations and dry humor, adding depth and a touch of levity to the intense plot.
The mystery at the heart of the story is intricately woven, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. Hunter excels at building suspense, and the pacing is spot-on, ensuring that the tension never lets up. The plot is layered with themes of greed, love, and ambition, making it more than just a simple whodunit.
One of the strengths of “Dangerous Games” is its exploration of the darker side of human nature. The secrets and lies that Leah uncovers are not just plot devices but are integral to the development of the characters and the story. This adds a level of psychological depth that elevates the book above typical mystery fare.
However, the book is not without its flaws. At times, the sheer number of twists can feel overwhelming, and some readers might find the resolution a bit too convenient. Despite these minor issues, “Dangerous Games” is an engaging read that will satisfy fans of the genre.
“Dangerous Games” is a testament to Susan Hunter’s skill as a storyteller. With its compelling protagonist, intricate plot, and psychological depth, it is a must-read for fans of mystery and thriller novels. Leah Nash’s latest adventure is a thrilling ride from start to finish, and it leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.
If you enjoy mysteries with strong, intelligent heroines and plots that keep you on the edge of your seat, “Dangerous Games” is definitely worth adding to your reading list. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the Leah Nash series or new to Susan Hunter’s work, this book is sure to captivate and entertain.
I received an ARC from "Severn Publishing" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with Leah going to the bookstore for a Christmas gift. On her way she runs into a group, PPOK, who are protesting outside the bookstore. Inside, she is waiting to talk to Luke, the clerk, who is with another customer. After Leah finishes her business, she returns to her apartment which is above the local newspaper operation. Leah gets a call later that night where she learns that the library was on fire. Rushing to the scene she discovers a lot of people are there. Her boyfriend Coop, the sheriff is on the scene and he asked her to take the Liberian, a witness to his car. It is later discovered that a body was discovered in the fire. It turns out to be Luke.
leah originally had no intention of looking into who was responsible for the fire and killing of Luke. That changed when she was asked by Luke's family members as well as Miguel a friend who worked on the paper. Beginning her search, her first inclination was that it was the group PPOK that was the guilty party. This was later disproved so she had to look for more information. She eventually believed that Ava was responsible, ut once more she was wrong. She later was provided with information that pointed the killer as a person well respected in town.
To discover why Luke was killed who the killer was and what Leah was shown that gave her what she needed, then you need to read this book. You won't be disappointed.
Dangerous Games, the eleventh book in the Leah Nash series, takes its reader to uncharted territory in the town of Himmel. Once again Susan Hunter took each of my predictions for where this story was going and shattered each in succession. However, she let me have those fantasies for a long enough to feel like I was right. With each new addition to this series, I find my favorite Leah Nash book. Dangerous Games was no different, I know it will hold my favorite slot until the next episode comes on the scene and then we shall see if it holds its position. After eleven books. I feel like I’ve been living in Himmel for half my life. I’d seriously like to subscribe to the online Himmel Times and Miguel’s podcast just to track my friends in Himmel. If you are new to this series and considering reading Dangerous Games, you owe it to yourself to get copy of Dangerous Habits and follow the overall story of Leah, Miguel, and the folks of Himmel and all the goings on as the series progresses. If you are already a reader of this series grab your copy and settle in for a top-notch entertainment experience. I received an Advance Reader Copy of Dangerous Games from the publisher and chose to provide my review.
There is so much to like in this series! The characters are well developed and after so many books in the series, readers have developed a strong connection to them, their lives and the happenings in Hummel. The mystery and investigation surrounding it, are always well thought out, interesting and keep readers guessing. I personally do at times get frustrated with Leah. She’s often a bit negative and unwilling to compromise. She’s in a relationship with Coop and wants that relationship, but at the same time is not willing to give up her own space or find a compromise to move their relationship forward to a new level. This just seems immature to me. She also gets mad that he doesn’t share sheriff’s department information regarding ongoing investigations with her. She’s not a member of law enforcement and shouldn’t expect to be given information just because she’s dating the sheriff. This is also immature, particularly when she doesn’t always reciprocate with sharing information she has. Honestly these issues do mar my enjoyment of what I consider to be a good series - obviously not enough to stop reading though. This is a very good series!
Dangerous Games is the 11th book in the Leah Nash series. After an late night fire at the library, The body of Luke Granger is pulled out of the ashes. It appears that Luke didn't die because of the fire.
Luke was doing custodial work to earn extra money toward being able to purchase the local bookstore after the owner has a health problem that is requiring him to sell the store an move to another state.
Luke's mother ask Leah to investigate because she's afraid the police will not do a fair investigation due to his past, and being related to some of the more criminals in town.
Leah's investigation unravels deep secrets held by some of the more influential and wealthy people in the area, and a murder or two may not be out of the realm of possibility to keep their secrets secret.
There are developed characters, and several red herrings to keep you guessing.
I'd like to thank Severn River Publishing and the author for the opportunity to read this Advance Reader Copy. All opinions are my own.
Luke Granger had turned away from his families illegal past and had plans to purchase Buy the Book Bookstore. When he no longer has the funding he needs, what will he do? Touching on issues of the current times, a group of locals have formed the PPOK aka Parents Protecting Our Kids. The group is in favor of banning certain books from the school and local libraries. When the library is set on fire, Leah Nash is concerned when she notices that Luke’s car is still in the parking lot. Why would he be here so late? When his body is found inside, Leah is asked to investigate his death. She is the owner of the town newspaper, Himmel Times, and is known for investigative skills. What “truths” will she uncover about her town that just might put her life in danger? I really enjoyed the very satisfying ending! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
A completely unlikable main character that is full of herself, incredibly nosy and consistently rude for no apparent reason. She is biased against characters and jumps to conclusions throughout the entire book based solely on her dislike of people. The characters don’t feel like people just placeholders for the story to progress, making it feel completely contrived. Repetitive and boring narrative is prevalent. There is a crime to be solved but most of the story is small talk. I found this book so incredibly boring I’m reconsidering what constitutes a one star and this book is the number one example. In all fairness this is the first book I have read in this series. So maybe it’s better with background from the other books? I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.
Dangerous Games is my first in this series and author. Compared with other thrillers that I have read, this is about average to me. Leah, a book writer and owner of a new media company, follows many paths of suspects to find out who burned a library and murdered a loved resident who worked there and was working towards purchasing it. There was simply too much going on and it felt very slow moving. Also, there was so much that seemed unrealistic and predictable. I did enjoy the twists and that is perhaps my main expectation with thrillers. Also, this was a change from other books because instead of directly finding the criminal, her approach was to eliminate suspects. I give this four stars, however, I would not discount this as a read to add to your list.
Book #11 in the Leah Nash series. The book reads as an excellent stand-alone, but you’d miss the character development and community interactions established in the earlier books. As the owner/ reporter of the local newspaper, Leah knows the community and likes most of the inhabitants. A body found at the scene of the library fire is identified as a local man who seemed to have no enemies. His family asks Leah for help identifying his killer…….and the story takes off.
An excellent murder mystery/ thriller that kept me guessing right to the end, Dangerous Games earns Susan Hunter another 5 stars from this reader.
Dangerous Games (Leah Nash Mysteries Book 11), my first read from author Susan Hunter A 394-page murder mystery, a well-written, entertaining & enjoyable read. I'll read more from this author. I own 5 other books by this author & after reading this one they've just moved near the top my TBR list. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Since I came into this series at Book 11 & since I own it, I look forward to reading Dangerous Habits (Leah Nash Mysteries Book 1) next. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Susan's Leah Nash series is on the top of my list of a series that keeps me coming back for more. I love how the characters weave in and out of each other's patterns, in the little town where she lives. Her development of Leah in this series is really fun to go with. She becomes a person you seem to know and it's almost like you have memories of her and her family, but of course it's her writing that keeps you wanting to know more. A series well defined and kept on the edge. looking forward to #12.
Better in the series. Overall plot was not captivating as previous books in the series. The cutesy cutesy talk between Leah and Coop is getting nauseating. I’m wondering if the next title in the series isn’t pointing to betrayal beyond the plot but also the assembling board members. All said despite a few other things that bug me I like the series and look forward to the next in the series. I wish it was in six month’s if not nine like Leah’s publisher wants 🤨
Book 11 of the Leah Nash Series! I have loved every book in this series and book #11 did not disappoint! I love all of the main characters in this series. Leah tends to get herself into a mess every time that she tries to get to the truth of any mystery and of course she does it again in this book. I hate that I have to wait a year for the next book in this series!
All the books have held my interest. I just finished Dangerous Games. I feel satisfaction in the contents of the books. Great.interest, interesting plots and so many twists and turns!! I'm sad to leave this town and the people behind, I feel like I know them all. I will I be waiting for your next book on Leah and her friends and frienemies!! Write fast! Hope you write another twelve books
I really enjoy this series and the latest edition is no exception. The characters are interesting and continue to develop throughout the series. As such, I would definitely recommend reading them in order. The mysteries in each book have kept me turning the pages. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
This is the eleventh book of this author in Leah Nash series that I have read.once again, an excellent storyline in this crime novel. The author highlights how Leah Nash uncovers despicable and corrupt behavior infiltrates even at the highest level of law enforcement and ends up solving two murders.
This was a fabulous book. I was an Advanced Reader for the author and was so thrilled to read this latest Leah Nash book. I love the characters that Ms. Hunter has built in these books and was happy to see further development for a few of the characters.
Another outstanding Leah Nash mystery. Another crime to solve, will he be able to figure out who committed this terrible act. Full of action that will keep you gripped and wanting more. Impossible to not love everything about Nash.
This story takes us back into Leah Nash’s world of finding the killer to solve the case and on this case we have a man dead due to a fire or so we think. Once Nash is on the case she finds out a lot of things about this town and the people in it.
Really loved this book. This book has slot of twist and turns and keeps you guessing who done it. I could not put this book down .I highly recommend this book and series.
Leah Nash is tossed feet first into a new mystery, when a local man dies in a fire. The family asks Leah to find the truth. The characters are realistic and the plot is great. The twists towards the end help Leah uncover the truth. I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
